Real Steal is one of my all time favourite movies, ever. It was passed over as just another mushy family movie at the time. The Harry Potter films were wrapping up, the Marvel franchise movies were gaining steam. Unless you were a Hugh Jackman fan, it barely came up on so many peoples radar but it actually is so heartwarming and broke so many tiny little stereotypes. Max calls Charlie 'Dad' in the end with no fanfare no close up on the moment to emphasize it, it just happens and as the audience you just accept it because it was earned but we didn't feel like the film beat us over the head to show us 'see, see, he earned it'. The visuals are beautiful, the actors brought their A-Game, and the directing and set design was futuristic but not unbelievably so. It still felt warm and natural like it could exist in our world, like we regular people would be screaming at our TVs watching that fight too. It's so good and I'm not even a fan of boxing movies and it's up there in my top ten.
I saw it on the big screen when it first came out. Let me tell you, the people watching the movie with me were pretty invested. When Charlie started the counterattack at the final round, several people let out a "whoo!! Yeahh!!" And during the scene where Charlie was like flying, throwing punches, and dodging, i looked around and a lot of people were trying to fight back the tears.
Thats awesome 😂 I wouldve loved to be there for that. Actually one of the best movies ever I think, its so much better than it is on paper, there isnt even some super cool underlying theme they were going for unless you look for one (of which there is so much to analyse) but its just a father son movie about robot boxing and yet it hits so hard emotionally and has so much hype in the action, amazing music choices. Its so great. I never get tired of watching this which is so rare for me.
Based on the story story STEEL, by Richard Matheson, where the story was turned into an episode of The Twilight Zone in 1963 as a boxing promoter and his business partner try to turn their robot boxer into a new champion in 1974.

This truly is one of those surprise gems that goes undetected so many times. Loved this watchalong with you all. I just have so much respect for this film that could easily just cruise by on any one of its storylines that keep being introduced but it doesn't, it just keeps adding on, and that is so good.
Thank you guys so much for doing this movie! This is definitely one of my favorite feel good movies and it is severely underrated. I always get teary eyed at the end when you see Charlie getting to box again and do what he loves. I also love the relationship between him and Max it’s so sweet!
my friends and i were so obsessed with this movie when it came out and i still love it so much it's got so much heart and the little kid is such a star
3:06 these girls are the directors kids. 42:03 thing about this scene is they left him in shadow mode so he was basically shadowing himself. It would be interesting to see what his processing was doing while he was looking at the mirror. The one thing I really like about this movie is how Hugh Jackman’s character grows during the movie. How at the end he finds his love of life again. One other thing by the end of the movie it looks like Adam is a real person. The way he listens to Max & Charlie. Especially when Max tells him to get up and Adam responds even though he doesn’t have the microphone. 1:04:43 this is like the ending of Rocky Balboa.
I really enjoy that the movie left the "sentience" of Atom up to interpretation. Did Max as a kid see something just through his imagination? In his need for a role model or friend? How much Atom shadows a person to repeat moves versus actually interpreting what he's seeing. It's all up to what you think. It doesn't go to the path of "kid discovers magical secret" but still had enough scenes, like the mirror scene, to have that question sitting in the back of your mind.
@@BaileyL018Apparently a proposed sequel was supposed to dive way deeper into the question of Atom's potential sentience. I, for one, would definitely have enjoyed a movie that did so along with maintaining the good characters and awesome fights.
@@BaileyL018 Having rewatched it recently I still wonder about Atom and his past, his hidden humanity? AI or something else? It's sure that it has something special and indeed it's nice to leave the viewer a little to their own interpretation.
Real Steel was also adapted into an episode of the classic Twilight Zone series hosted by Rod Sterling. After human boxing is deemed illegal Robots fight in the ring with Steel as the favorite. It is revealed that Steel isn't actually a Robot but rather a Human boxer inside a Robot suit.
Shawn Levy's films all seem to have this real heart at their core and pushes them above what you'd expect from the type of movie it is. this, Free guy, the adam project, etc. all fun films, but have this emotional resonance built in.
17:56 I was wondering the same thing about Noisy Boy. The reason Charlie got him for a good price is because he was defective in some way, with “things he could live with”, but we never saw anything wrong with him. That robot was perfect until Charlie put him in the ring with Midas.
Regarding robot movie, for me it's the movie called 'Deadly Friend'. Haven't seen that movie in maybe...30 years? But always came up in my mind for some reason 😂
I always tear up when Max is watching Charlie fight at the end. Even though Charlie didn’t want to be a dad…that’s all Max ever wanted. He was truly his hero.
I like how the names "Zeus and Atom" show their situation. Like atom is the smallest particle of matter and zeus is the biggest god that rules. Atom almost beat zeus so that final fight can have a meaning that size in a fight doesn't matter if you're determined enough to win.
Damn I never realized all the parallels between Charlie and Atom. And how Max was projecting his want to have a dad onto Atom, and at the end he finally gets that shown by being picked up, similar to how he made Atom hold him earlier. Following up with the "your secrets safe" line. Also when they pointed out Max saying "I want you to fight for me" and in the end fight it was literal, he fought in place of Max, for him. I liked the movie already but it was way deeper than I first realized with all the little details. I thought the father/son story was sorta mediocre and wedged in to try to be heartfelt but it actually is done well. I was a kid when I first saw this movie too granted.
35:48 A small detail, but it made me smile when Charlie yelled “You did it” to Max when he beat Metro. Didn’t try to take credit, he was just happy for him
What I love about this film is that it is about a man who used to live in the glorious days as a boxer and is now struggling in a world of robot boxing. While trying to find his way he now has a son who he walked out on because he was afraid. His journey is about evolving from a man who was stuck in the glory days to becoming a father who would do anything for his son who he has always loved, but has struggled to show it and is trying to fix his mistakes. With Max stumbling across Atom, it gave Charlie a reason to bond with Max and that is the turning point in this father-son relationship as he starts to learn about trust. As they start winning fights that causes Charlie's bet using Ambush to catch up and when Max tells Ricky that Charlie is his father; it clicks in Charlies mind that he needs to keep Max safe. Since all Max wants is to be loved and wanted by his absent dad; Charlie finally gets it and the Zeus fight is the closure of this struggling father who realized that the missing piece in his life was his son Max.
Real steel is an awesome movie, the Director had the awesome inspiration from the game Rock’em Sock’em Robots to make this movie, Brings back the childhood thrill of playing the game.
One of my all time favorite movies and no matter how many times I watch it I'm so invested in the fight scenes and story it's honestly crazy how I never get tired of copying the last fight between Zues and Atom.
I remember getting the toys of these guys when the movie came. I had Noisy Boi, Twin Cities, and Atom. It was fun remaking atom v twins and making new fights between them. This movie amazed me so long ago, and still is amazing to watch over and over
As a Battlebots fan, the concept of Real Steel seemed great from when I first heard about it. Realistically, I doubt humanoid robots will ever be as effective as what Battlebots currently has (2 or 4 wheel drive), but I can definitely see some teams trying it out once the technology gets there
I am also a huge Battlebots fan. And the is an interview with one of the main creators and producers of the show and he talks about how tv people where thinking that battle bots would be humanoid bots. But he as like yeah no that's not how it works. The interview has so much insight ruclips.net/video/bbHV28a0l1I/видео.html
Fun Fact: The film is a loose adaptation of the short story "Steel" by Richard Matheson. The only thing the film and the story have is the concept of robot boxing and a human "fighting" a robot. The story was one of the many short stories of Richard Matheson that got adapted into episodes of the classic TV series The Twilight Zone. Matheson is well known for several of his novels, being most recognized for Somewhere in Time and I Am Legend. Matheson's final writing work was the TV movie Duel (1971), which was based on a short story he written, and the TV movie was directed by a newcomer director named Steven Spielberg. Spielberg served as a producer of this film.
I did not expect much out of this movie when I first watched it. Man! I loved it so much! Felt like I was watching a Rocky movie. Underdog and all! So glad you guys reacted to this.
This is definitely an underrated movie that, while a modest enough hit, was not big enough of a success to greenlight a sequel back then, which was a bummer. However, this movie has grown in popularity over the years. There was talk of a possible sequel and even the director talked about it last year about the possibility. Imagine Reel Steel 2 where robots fight MMA-style, LOL! I think there was an announcement recently about a Real Steel Disney+ series coming. I think the director commented on many writers who have pitched a lot of very good ideas, but nothing solid yet. I definitely see many Rocky parallels in this movie, especially Rocky 4. Speaking of MMA, Warrior would be a great sports movie to react to, if you have not already seen it. Hayley needs to be introduced a bunch of sports movies that also have lots of heart in it. I think she'd enjoy the Rocky movies. I never thought about it before, but now that you mentioned it, there really are not many fun Robot movies. Most "robot movies" are more about killer robots or, as you said, more existential type movies about the dangers of A.I. If you are still looking for more action movie ideas, here are some more I bet many others have probably already suggested since they are the usual big blockbuster-type action movies: Con-Air, The Rock, The Last Boy Scout, TimeCop, Face/Off, Johnny Mnemonic, Point Break (original, not the modern remake), Rambo franchise, Cobra, Eraser, Mile 22, Enemy of the State, Wanted, Extraction, Kate, Atomic Blonde, The Raid 1 & 2, Commando, Tango & Cash, Cliffhanger, Double Impact, Bad Boys franchise, Armageddon, Transformers franchise, The Fast & Furious franchise, Sabotage (Schwarzenegger), Lionheart, True Lies, The Running Man, Lock Up, The Specialist. LOL, I could go on and on and on and I already have for too long...
this movie made me so hyped as a kid, its so good and the final battle with the kid looking how his father is fighting and having fun, it tear me up. such a good fiction movie
This movie's appeal is all about it being a character piece. Charlie's character, down on his luck, desperate for the money and trying to get back to the big leagues, thanking that's what is most important in his life. Max's character, searching for a connection with someone, because his aunt who claims she wants custody, is ok with going away for a month and leaving this kid who just lost his mom with the dad he has never known. The robot fights are just the spectacle, the vehicle to getting these two characters to open up to one another, find a way to bond, to connect, to be a family. What makes you so emotional about the fight is that you know how much that last fight means to both of them. It's Max proving to Charlie that he believes in him, something no one has done in a long time. And it's Charlie proving to Max what lengths he will go to fight for his kid, to do the thing that will make him happy, prove to him that his dad DOES care about him. Charlie didn't think he was worthy to be a dad to his kid because he split when Max was still little, but now he knows it isn't too late. I loved this movie and it's criminal it wasn't a blockbuster hit.
Is Gamma the robot Statue they have in front of the arena, or is Gammas design never shown? Its kinda sad that Atom was left to waste away in the junkyard, since he looked like he was in good condition, when Gamma is probably in a WRB hall of fame room along with other WRB champions. Or maybe, Gamma is also in the junkyard as well since it probably fought until it was destroyed, and they didnt bother to repair it.
You guys just don’t understand how happy I am that you reacted to this this is literally one of my all time favorite movies like I love it so much I cry everytime Hugh Hackman is so good even when he was to be a “bad guy” who redeemed himself with his son and yes at the end he calls him dad instead of Charlie that little difference in the names makes me cry A lot too

I have re-watched 'Real Steel' multiple times. And every time, I get PUMPED for the matches. Even though I know how each match is gonna end, I am still loud (Yeah!! Get 'em!!).
I just love how real the robots look and how unique each one looks at that. I remember loving this movie when it was coming out and the idea od an ex-pro boxer using his knowledge to have a sparing robot follow his moves: genius.
Love this movie so much and I saw it when it first came out to the theaters. The child actor is so talented that he can look at a script and remember every line and everything he needs to act his part as well. 200 plus pages of a script and he remembers every line he is meant to say and when he is meant to say it as well. I love the robots here as well of course and how Hugh Jackman's character learns to be a better man because of his son. Good reaction as always guys and glad to see you reacting to this one as well.
I went and watched this in the cinema when it came out. When Charlie 'sells' his kid then the lil guy wants to go on the road with his Dad, I clearly recall thinking 'here we go, JUST when they start to like one another the money is revealed at the end of the 2nd act to bust them up again'. Then seconds later, Max asks how much money Charlie got and Charlie owns up to it straight away. That was the point I went "okay movie, you're not just painting by numbers here'. I like this one. Hidden gem indeed.
I haven't seen this movie in years, and seeing this reaction made me miss it so much. They need to make robot boxing a thing, I'm not a sports person but I'll definitely watch it
Most people missed the point of the final round. Charley, Max's dad, was in his own way fighting the top fighter in the world. Meaning, Max got to see his dad take on and almost beat the top fighter in the world. Instead of the newspaper clipping, Max got to see what his dad was capable of in person. 💯
I can't believe this came out in 2011, I remember stumbling onto this on Netflix after release and loving it, it doesn't seem like that long ago tbh. Still waiting for a sequel, they had the potential for a brand new original franchise and never capitalized on it. Shame really.
If I'm not mistaken, the Kid in this movie was cast as the Young 'THOR' in the first Thor movie. And he's in a bunch of other movies too, acting is too good for his age.
Thank you for this. This is one of my faves, it made me cry just like how Armageddon did - father and child plotlime really hits me. And Atom and that kid is just so great!
Robot Rocky is how my nephew described it to me when he wanted me to take him to watch it. That won me over so i took him on his birthday. It's been one of our favorites since.
I really wonder if Atom is like the A-10 in that world. An old design we can't manufacture anymore but that's still probably one of the best once modernized, that's why the conceptor of Zeus was concerned about it.
The little boy who portrayed Charlie's son in this movie is actor Dakota Goyo, who also portrayed the young version of Chris Hemsworth's character in Thor, which also came out in 2011!!!!
I've always loved the idea that if you think about it, this movie actually happened irl in a way, considering they used animatronics for the robots and mocaps for the fighting.
YEEEEES! I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH! 😭💕 This is one of the movies where you need to see the behind the scenes. How they did the things for that time and the passion they had for this wonderful movie! ❤️

watch the movie With All Your Might, there Stallone also plays with his son, since the Live steel was shot according to his script but remade in a modern way
after rewatching this so many times, I just realised at the end of the last match, the commentator said "the champ is trying desperately to stay on his feet, but KENTON is relentless" Such a beautiful thing, it's like Charlie's finally on that big stage he's possibly been dreaming of his entire boxing career, but didn't get to that stage before the whole robot boxing thing took over.
This movie has always been my safe spot. I come to this when im feeling down or had a rough day. It just baffles me how many people don't know this masterpiece. It was a huge hit back in Malaysia. I was 17, and this was the first movie I watched in theatre alone after a long debate with my dad. It's been in my memory since then.
YES! More reactions to this gem of a movie. Still gets me to tears and loads of fun to watch. I've yet to see a single person who can't completely hate this movie. Just great times all around

Thank you for this reaction. I was an extra on this film. We did most of our scenes in downtown Detroit in 2010. Crash Palace was filmed in a very dirty old auto factory. It was very hot, and the makeup department would come around periodically to reapply grease to our skin to make us even more sweaty and filthy. Cheering for long hot days on end was challenging, but Director Shawn Levy made us enjoy coming to work each day and giving 150%. I also worked on the final battle with Zeus. I remember how touching that bond between Hugh and Dakota felt even knowing they were acting. I actually teared up a bit during that scene. When you work on a project for days or weeks on end, you start to feel like the fantasy of film is your temporary reality. I’m so glad it is being well received all of these year later!
In my top favorite "Sci-Fi" movies. Its really fun and surprisingly emotional, especially for someone who had reconnected with his father. Charlie is written really well as a struggling dad/worker. Also side note the kid also plays young Thor. :)
Loved this reaction! And the investment everyone took in it. The character arcs were my favorite part of this movie. Charlie learned to be a better person. Max learned to love his dad. Aunt Debra learned to adapt and be supportive. Even the bad guy/bookie ended up on the wrong side of the bet. This is just a wholesome movie!
I’ve seen this movie a few times, but it just never really clicked with me. All the same, I’m excited to see the director re-team with Jackman, and Ryan Reynolds after Free Guy, for the upcoming Deadpool 3. That movie is gonna be a bonkers dream!
2:17 IDKIYK, but when you mentioned a MCU reunion here, you left Kevin Durand out when the opening credits showed his name. He played The Blob in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the mutant with a fresh tattoo of a gymnast in the opening scene, and who is later shown as a super-morbidly obese boxer. In this movie, he plays the cowboy fella who Hugh Jackman’s character owes money to. Kevin Durand was also in a 2010 movie with fellow MCU alum Paul Bettany (Jarvis/Vision) called “Legion” about the Apocalypse where they play the Arch-Angels Gabriel and Michael.
I love the looks of the film that is only 5 minutes in the future but still dirty and worn. Absolutely magnificent film with some of the best landscape shots I have seen in in films made 2010's
My first time watching this one! I nearly always have seen already what you guys react to, but it's interesting watching something new because it's like a speed edit. With great editing it's not only a feeling of watching it with friends, but also a time saving way of getting most of the movie and impact of feels cut down. I feel like I've seen this properly now (even though probably a good 40+ minutes were missed out in editing). This might be a great way to watch movies that I would not normally see, and save time too! Anyway, great little movie and fantastic reaction, thanks guys!

Huh so that's how Falcon gets paid. My man's doing illegal robot fighting I bet he wished he had Ultron lol.
LMAO!!
WOW I FORGOT THIS MOVIE EXISTED, I rented the DVD back in the day. I really had so much fun watching it - it's the only thing I remember.
The video game wasn't too bad.
That was also my first experience with it. And man did I love it.
my friends and i were so obsessed with this movie when it came out and i still love it so much it's got so much heart and the little kid is such a star
Oh wow, yeah I love this guys stuff
17:56 I was wondering the same thing about Noisy Boy. The reason Charlie got him for a good price is because he was defective in some way, with “things he could live with”, but we never saw anything wrong with him. That robot was perfect until Charlie put him in the ring with Midas.
I think he was weak in the core, in the fight he starts getting destroyed after Midas hits him in the core.
Maybe because noisy boy won't adjust to actually hit the enemy with his moves just do what the program says
"Short Circuit" is a great movie about a robot.
Yessir!
Yesssss 😊 the original WAL-E
Regarding robot movie, for me it's the movie called 'Deadly Friend'. Haven't seen that movie in maybe...30 years? But always came up in my mind for some reason 😂
@@nitrokid I remember that movie. so messed up.
Omg yes gosh that takes me back the robot reminds me of wall.E ❤ older movies and music is where it's at ✨
I always tear up when Max is watching Charlie fight at the end.
I am blown away that my favourite reaction channel is watching the movie I never see anyone react to. Screw sleep, it’s 3:46am and I’m watching this
oH YEAH!!! Cheers!!
Didn’t try to take credit, he was just happy for him
This movie is sooo underrated! B-movie premise with A+ Craft & Heart. So glad it’s finally getting some reaction love!
OMG I've been wating for you guys to react to this movie for soo long. I love how you guys react to movies and series.
@RGRSRegn damn bro you wrote an entire essay about this movie and how good it is.
Real steel is an awesome movie, the Director had the awesome inspiration from the game Rock’em Sock’em Robots to make this movie, Brings back the childhood thrill of playing the game.
I'm not an anime fan as much as some but I was recommended by friends this anime called Megalobox. Said it had a similar vain to this film.
One of my all time favorite movies and no matter how many times I watch it I'm so invested in the fight scenes and story it's honestly crazy how I never get tired of copying the last fight between Zues and Atom.
im so glad i found this channel, i remember watching Real Steel when i was younger and rewatching it with yall was an amazing nostalgic experience.
Second favorite sports movie of all time.
I did not expect much out of this movie when I first watched it. Man! I loved it so much! Felt like I was watching a Rocky movie. Underdog and all!
So glad you guys reacted to this.
When I went to see this movie in the cinema my friend and I were legit on our fight screaming at the screen for that entire last fight 😂
I love this movie so much one of my favorite Hugh Jackman movies
I was so surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie the first time I watched it, so glad to see the four of you watching it together
Thank you for watching one of my favorite childhood movies and they need another one
This movie has a lot of heart between the father and son
Funfact: Atom was the Sparring Partner of Gamma, the first bot to be world champ. He was built to literally be beat up for hours.
My favorite part of this movie will always and forever be the xbox 720 advertisement. Hahaha. It's just too hilarious!
You guys just don’t understand how happy I am that you reacted to this this is literally one of my all time favorite movies like I love it so much I cry everytime Hugh Hackman is so good even when he was to be a “bad guy” who redeemed himself with his son and yes at the end he calls him dad instead of Charlie that little difference in the names makes me cry A lot too
this is on my personal goat movie list. Never seen a youtube reaction to this until today
There are certainly more. You've clearly never tried looking it up. You should try that more often with movies you like. You'll find there to be plenty of reactions to plenty of film you enjoy.
Damn, this is a GOOD reaction format. Commentary was on point, good balance between scenes and commentary, varied opinions. You guys bring good energy to the reactions and the overall watching experience. Subscribed!
Heck: It might even be why I like real boxing.
Hidden gem indeed.
...oh and btw, Marvel/mcu reunion for sure, that 'texan' at the bull show at the beginning was in Wolverine origins as the Blob 😂
wolverine
Wasp
Falcon
Real Steel & Pacific Rim are two of the best robot movies i've ever seen
I haven't seen this movie in years, and seeing this reaction made me miss it so much. They need to make robot boxing a thing, I'm not a sports person but I'll definitely watch it
This is one of the best robot movie I ever watch and I love it so much!! I truly hope there was a sequel since this movie is already so great!!
I forgot how good this movie was
It's like the writers of Rocky & Over the Top and the Transformers special effects team had cocktails together and then made this movie🤣
This movie was the best Movie I ever seen back when I was a kid watching it and watching it today I still love it so much having a special place in my heart so glad y’all watched the movie as well
watch the movie With All Your Might, there Stallone also plays with his son, since the Live steel was shot according to his script but remade in a modern way
You know it's a good movie when the end credits roll up and the audience are just sitting in their seats smiling
after rewatching this so many times, I just realised at the end of the last match, the commentator said "the champ is trying desperately to stay on his feet, but KENTON is relentless" Such a beautiful thing, it's like Charlie's finally on that big stage he's possibly been dreaming of his entire boxing career, but didn't get to that stage before the whole robot boxing thing took over.
Yesss!! This is one of my top comfort movies!! Love it so muchhh
Love the comment, but you might want to change
“can’t completely hate this movie”
That implies that it’s terrible and everyone needs to hate it.
@@GuyWithNoNickName I meant in the sense that like with any movie, it'll be criticized in one way or another. But even with criticisms those same people still enjoy the movie
I’m so happy yall finally watched it!
I’m so glad it is being well received all of these year later!
reel steel is one of my all-time favorite family movie. thank you for this
In my top favorite "Sci-Fi" movies.
The director Shaun Levy also did Big Fat Liar, and for decades, I had no idea it's another take on The Boy Who Cried Wolf.
4:13 that guy played The Blob in X-Men origins wolverine
Another robot movie i think you guys are gonna love is Chappie, Hugh Jackman is in it. I saw the movie in theatre and i loved it. 😊
Fun fact: The actor that plays Kingpin at the Zoo is also the writer of the screenplay.
I love the looks of the film that is only 5 minutes in the future but still dirty and worn. Absolutely magnificent film with some of the best landscape shots I have seen in in films made 2010's
This movie is so cool. Underrated.
You cannot convince me that this isnt the movie "Over the Top" from the 80s, in disguise
One of mu favourite scenes is when Atom looks at himself in the mirror and it’s a big piece of evidence that he does have some form of sentience
I have specifically searched for this movie's reaction on your channel in the past so I'm really happy to see this!
And another great thing about Atom is he able fight Zeus because he is a sparring bot, smaller, fast and he is built to take hits
I absolutely love this movie. It's truly an underrated gem! Having a bad day? Put this on your screen and you will end up smiling ❤
i remember watching this movie in my hight school years ago, such a great movie with great message! feels nostalgic
Loved watching this movie in theaters as a kid, and seeing the characters in the film as well as the robot atom develop throughout the plot
That's a good movie, I remember when they were here in the D filming it.
OMFG nobody ever reacts to this classic!!!!
Its pretty obvious that Atom is a sentient robot and also Zeus
