What's your 4th of July look like?
This past 4th, rainy and lonely. Most other years? Still lonely. I don't really do 4th of July's. Just too busy

We don't have a 4th of July celebration. July was freezing cold for us! This winter was brutal.
Usually it's my idiot neighbors restaging the Fall Of Baghdad as soon as night falls, but it seemed like they all went out of town for this year's holiday. :D
My family’s one requirement for 4th of July is this movie. They made my sister and I watch it every year even when we were probably too young to watch it (my mom made me cover my eyes for the strip club scene every single time, and I was generally terrified whenever an alien was on screen) and my family will randomly quote this movie year round. I love this movie though and I also love the Pitch Meeting for it (it’s one of my favorite Pitch Meetings Ryan George has done).
My 4th of July is just another day as I’m British 🇬🇧😊
It's funny: one of the most American films was directed by a German. Being German myself, that makes me a little proud. 🇩🇪❤🇺🇸

I don't know if I'd say it's the most american, it does show other countries there and them killing the space ships around them, the most american film would maybe only mention them, if that, and say they are dead or fucking up in such a way that they should die, that would be more american. In the most american film, there is only america, everyone else is stupid and wrong. Canada isn't american either.

The theater was completely packed when I saw this at its initial release. When the President showed that he was going to be flying himself, I turned to the total stranger sitting next to me, and said, “If he survives this, he’s a shoo-in for reelection.”
I remember a Saturday Night Live sketch shortly after this movie came out with that same actor who played the president running for reelection, and somehow losing to another candidate in a debate about the events depicted in the movie. It was so funny because as you said, he should be a shoe-in after these events and his speech!
He did delay evacuating the cities. He sent hundreds of American pilots to their death in a futile attack. He didn’t use the information technology at Area 51. (What did he REALLY know, and when did he know it?) And my peeve: He didn’t nuke the bastards once the shield were down, but instead expended vast quantities of ordnance uselessly and ending up being saved by one old drunk on a kamikaze mission.
Come to think of it. I might have voted for the other guy too!

I got my license when this was in theaters. My friend worked at 2 of them. He let my friends & i sneak in & throw water balloons at the PACKED crowds 😭 from behind them all. Then we ran 🏃➡️ like cowards and drove off in the get-away car ! 🚗

FUN FACT: Will Smith’s line, “AND WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SMELL?!”, was not scripted.
That scene took place near a lake filled with Brine Shrimp.
When they die, they sink to the bottom of the shallow lake and decompose.
When the wind kicks just right, it wafts the horrifying smell of millions of decayed shrimp; and apparently, nobody warned Will Smith.
I think part of the escape scene (with Will and Jeff) was improvised a bit too, but don't quote me on that. But yeah I heard about that lol. Love improv it's awesome!

The funniest scene in this movie to me is when they're looking for pilots. He's telling them that he's looking for payback since he was kidnapped by aliens 10 years ago, and they're looking at each other like oh hell this nut case. They're in the middle of an alien invasion and still don't believe him. LOL!
Problem is he could still be crazy. As it’s clear the aliens don’t use stealth.
Not only are they in the middle of an alien invasion; the main guy looking for pilots is the guy in charge of Area 51; i.e. the guy who literally knows that they were scouting & visiting Earth as far back as 1947. lol. I guess he just assumed that the crashed ship was the only one.
It's worth noting in the novelization & prequel/sequel books, it was confirmed that Russel had, in fact, been abducted & probed & studied. When they went in & searched the wreckage of one of the big city ships, they found an area with a bunch of research on Earth, including belongings from the people they had abducted, and ties directly into / explains General Graves' comment about how "they knew exactly where to hit us" and how they immediately targeted NORAD.
Bill Pullmans speech made me feel patriotic even though I'm not even American, I thought that was an epic speech 😂
There is no reason a cheesy popcorn movie like this should contain such a great speech. It's genuinely uplifting, even if the specific circumstances don't apply to you.
The speech was for all the world not just America.
You'll never hear a speech like that from Biden, he speaks mumble and you need a translator.

I saw it in the theater with my brother and sister and I was blown away by how awesome it was and it still is a pretty good movie!
I won a radio contest to see it at midnight when it first came out. I can’t remember how many times I saw it at the theater but I know it was a lot.
Likewise I saw it in the cinema at the time too, it was very fun - stupid, but fun.

I'm sorry but ID4 Independence Day 1996 was easily one of the WORST films I have ever seen! Come on, it's so stupid and cheesy the only thing missing are jalapeños! And the ending with a computer virus?! Come on! And don't get me started on that god awful 2016 sequel, Resurgence. The less said about that awful film the better. In fact it was so bad, that it killed the ID4 film series forever.
Fun Fact: When they were making this movie, the Producers asked the United States military for help. Military assistance would save them millions in production costs. The US military read the script and loved it. The script was pro government, pro US and pro military so they were all on board to help get this move made, just under one condition. The military asked the writers to... CUT OUT ANY REFERENCES TO AREA 51.
The Producers and writers refused to cut Area 51 references so the American military refused to help them with the movie.

There was a deleted scene that I wish they would've left in the movie. It showed David studying the ship and discovering that some of our tech was reversed engineered from the alien tech and that is why he was able to make a virus that was compatible with their programming.
I didn't know that! That would've killed a lot of the criticism in that plot point.
we see at the start of the film that the technology was compatible when they used our satellites, their system would understand the same code language for that to work
i always thought fact the aliens could use human satelittes already implied that they were uding similar enough tech thst a virus could work

Reality isn't usually so kind. I don't even have enough fingers to count the amount of fellow service members who married a stripper from a club near the base only to have their bank accounts drained by her and fall into debt from buying an overpriced vehicle with a 30% interest rate. 7 out of 10 will usually be requesting a meeting with a Chaplin due to said economic drain and discovering Jody was keeping their girl company not to long after tying the knot. LMAO🤣

That was a problem though, as being a stripper is not a good thing for anyone and is a poison in society, and it's absolutely not something that should be condoned or normalized, and it's about the only complaint I have with this movie.
I always liked the small detail where Russel accidentally hit the missile launch button before takeoff, which caused the malfunction and subsequent jam when he tried to actually fire it.
Yeah, I love the little attention to detail moments like that. It would have made the jam feel extremely contrived without it. But that little scene makes it entirely reasonable and realistic, not just a plot contrivance.
They actually didn't even originally have him in a fighter jet, but his own crop duster. But test audiences thought it was ridiculous that he could keep up with the jets, so they rewrote and reshot all of those scenes just to make it feel believable.

A lot of missable details this movie has.
The most important one imo being Russel’s kamikaze attack on the alien destroyer. The reason his suicide attack was so effective was because he hit the alien weapon the exact second it fired.
Pretty much the old plugging a shotgun when it fires joke. Man died a clown with balls of steel.
oh, fun fact number 2. The Dads missle didn't launch because when he first entered into the jet he accidentally activated the missle launch. Then he pressed a button that aborted it from launching. The system was still reading the missle luanch as being aborted. when he pressed the trigger to launch the missle it tried to launch but without disactivating the abort order the systems failsafe went off, causing the clamps connection to the missle to be physically severed and stay in a hold position until manually released.
😮 I have watched this movie hundred of times (saw it at the cinema and had it on VHS when it came out) and I never put that together! You learn something new everyday!

It's a principle called "Chekhov's gun".
In great movies, even the funny parts are there for a reason, either to explain something that happened at the start of the movie or the end.

Judd Hirsch as Julius Levinson is the best Jewish dad ever put to film
Yep, absolutely flawless. In fact, one other similar role of his I loved was playing a Jewish person in the TV show 'Forever.' Short lived but very nice imho.

The Independence Day speech is considered by many as one of the greatest speeches in cinema.
The speech was a placeholder, because the speechwriter weren't pleased with it. Bill Pullman did so authentically, that HE changed their minds - in one take.
So funny that I am Canadian and literally have watched this movie once a year since it came out. Now watching 4 Americans that never saw it, blows my mind.
Now you have a 4th of July tradition ahead.

I remember watching this in the cinema and the presence of those ships was fantastic; their scale was really amplified by the big screen. I recall my dad saying "If those ships were REALLY over those cities, it'd be extremely dark, because they're blocking so much sunlight."
I also vaguely remember trying to watch the sequel, heavy emphasis on 'trying'. I was SO. BORED. I had to keep a yawn counter. It was so bad, so overstuffed with effects, and I didn't care for anyone. Without Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum, the thing was dead.

1996 was definitely Brent Spiner's year as both this film and Star Trek: First Contact came the same year and both did good at the box office.
"(After the wedding) I'm so glad this movie is making time for those little moments" --- that's what sets 90s movies apart from modern cinema, they actually made you care about the characters and turned them into 3-dimensional fully fleshed out human beings instead of just NPCs living through whatever the plot calls for. That's why movies back then meant so much more.
When I saw this in the theater people were cheering. I've never seen it before or since.
For every 30 blockbusters we get No Way Home or Guardians 3 where it SLIGHTLY reminds me of watching 90s-2000s movies growing up

I think he was miserable from shooting in the desert, so he took it out on the alien dummy, and it just worked.

The Alien designs were done by Patrick Tatopoulus who also created the amazing designs for the 1998 Godzilla, the Riddick movies, 2006s Silent Hill and many more.
Oh, so that’s where the name of the main character from Godzilla came from. I didn’t know that.
I agree with all of those except calling Godzilla 1998 amazing. That design was about two steps better than Minya and a blatant cribbing of Jurassic Park's popularity at the time. Worst work Tatoupolis has ever done.
@@passingrando6457 I love that design and think it's absolutely unique. Patrick did exactly what Emmerich and Devlin told him to do and it has his distinctive style. But of course you are entitled to your own opinion and it's fine if you don't like it. ^^
@@Tasuva opinions are subjective, but the fact that the Emmerich Godzilla's design was based on Jurassic Park was not. It's even written in the concept art, though I'll confess I forget which page exactly. It is objectively not a unique design.
That doesn't mean you can't like it. I think we all like plenty of things that are heavily based on other things. Hell, I'd have probably liked the design myself if Roland Emmerich didn't slap it down like his dick on a table and try to tell me that it was supposed to be _Godzilla._

I went to a Tuesday night preview showing on July 2nd with a group of my friends. We had so much fun watching this movie. At one point, when David is telling everyone about giving the aliens a virus, my friend Eric shouts "GIVE THEM WINDOWS 95!" The entire theater just roared with laughter at that. Yes, that was Mae Whitman playing the president's daughter. Also, it's understandable to not recognize him with unkempt long hair, unshaven, and kind of pudgy, but Dr. Okun was Brent Spiner, who played Lieutenant Cmdr. Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
As a HUGE Star Trek girl growing up in the 80s and 90s, it was adorable and hilarious to see "Data" in this movie. My very lovely 80 year old father and I still quote parts of this movie at each other. Take care VanArchon, pleasure talking with you. Bet Eric was a trip to deal with!

When this came out I did not recognize alot of the actors and even less ST's Data, I had only seen ST-Voy at that time.. and I still don't care to much about the older show. "Give them win 95" that's brutal.. but funny as hell
I've seen this movie hundreds of times, I still cry at certain points. One of my top favorite all time movies. I use several quotes from this movie. One of them is from Jeff Goldblum who used the same line in Jurassic Park. "Must go faster... must go faster... must go faster... go go go go go go!!!" Lol.

It literaly took me 20 years to get the Hammer and toiletseat joke.. About how everything purchased by governments always costs more than it should to cover black book operations.. That gag was seriously well made.
Almost 30 years later, and the city destruction sequence easily remains the single greatest display of awe-inspiring destruction ever put to film. It's just the perfect demonstration of the villain's true power, and combined with he next sequence showing off their impenetrable defenses, it makes that first successful missile strike all the more exciting, like we've FINALLY got a chance to take on this seemingly unstoppable force.
Crazy thing is that the city destruction was actually practical effects.

@@ninetenduh Yea all the miniature work & explosions in this movie, except for maybe 1-2 shots, hold up extremely well to the point it would be fine if released today (and those 1-2 shots weren't great even in 1998 but they couldn't redo them). Compare that to CGI from 1998: Lost In Space, the few CGI shots in Event Horizon (most was models), Star Wars Prequels... they look like PS2/3 graphics & don't hold up at all.
This is why aliens don't attack. They see our historical documents and see that we ALWAYS win. Great reaction. Thank you.

The radar went ping.
After a while, he could see a dot ahead of him. It wasn’t moving much, and it certainly wasn’t firing.
He left the fleet and went to investigate.
It was a huge ship. Or, at least, it had been once. Quite a lot of it had been melted off.
It drifted along, absolutely dead, tumbling very gently. It was green, and vaguely triangular, except for six legs, or possibly arms. Three of them were broken stubs. It looked like a cross between a spider and an octopus, designed by a computer and made out of hundreds of cubes, bolted together.
As the giant hulk turned he could see huge gashes in it, with melted edges. There was a suggestion of floors inside.
He switched on the radio.
‘Captain?’
‘Yes?’
‘Can you see this thing here? What is it?’
‘We find them sometimes. We think they belonged to an ancient race, now extinct. We don’t know what they called themselves, or where they came from. The ships are very crude.’
The dead ship turned slowly. There was another long burn down the other side.
‘I think they were called Space Invaders,’ said Johnny.
‘The human name for them?’
‘Yes.’
‘I thought so.’

I'm 56 years old, so probably not your usual audience. But I'm SO enjoying your takes and reactions to some of my favourite movies of all time. It reminds me of how I felt when I first watched these.

The way they interspersed humor and affection in the movie totally balanced it out, because otherwise it's would be too grim too watch, I think. It was done really well. I love how Jeff Goldblum's "We must go faster" is the same line he has in Jurassic Park!

This is one of my all-time favorite movies with Will Smith. This and Enemy of the State, which I beg you all to react to. That movie is so well put together and keeps you engaged for the entire movie.

Independence day is a classic. I'm old enough to have seen in the the cinema when I was 15! But it still holds up today! Bill Pullman's speech is one of the greatest movie speeches I've ever heard! 👍 And Mr Emmerich, the director, saw the original Star wars a lot when he was a kid, so you can definitely see the influence in this. Just a pity there was an ad every 5 minutes, even one at the very end of the movie.
An actual Emmerich Star Wars would have had some incredible, epic space battles for sure.

I saw the movie back in the theatre during my college years with a couple of friends. We thought the poster looked interesting but we didn't expect it to be THAT GOOD! Especially during the President's speech everyone in the audience was cheering. It was crazy. I still have goosebumps today. This was a very good movie. Worth every minute.
Yeah I saw this as a teen and I remember in our theater the whole crowd cheered after the President's speech too lol. My brother saw this before me though and spoiled the ending, I was so mad lol.

A cast of this size well built for a film this size and the actors they casted were all enjoyable to watch.
dir. Emmerich & writer. Devlin, who are producers under the imprint of CENTROPOLIS Entertainment had prior hits (Universal Soldier, Stargate) and this was their biggest one yet.
The teaser trailer had everybody losing it.
Especially with The White House getting torched.
The speech by Bill Pullman as president Whitmore to the last line of defense is one of the great movie speeches ever.
The merchandise was crazy.
Toys, video games, prequel publications (one was a novel and the other was a comic from by Marvel), etc.
The cropduster's character was actually abducted as presented in Independence Day #0 from Marvel Comics.
No.1 film of 1996 and Academy Award winner for Best Visual Effects.
As for the 2016 sequel aka Resurgence........

It reminds me of the tone of Armageddon, with Bruce Willis, also with several characters and also at times is dramatic and at other times has humor, the ingredients for a summer family Blockbuster.
The second movie while not terrible doesn’t come close to the hype this movie had. What I did like about it though was the continuation of the world building in terms of how they used the tech that was left behind by the aliens.
@@kaylawayla2850 Yup...because all this movie had was hype. The sequel was exactly the same. But since everyone had already seen it, and the marketing for it wasn't new, and also not as aggressive, it didn't have nearly the impact.
Both movies are of almost exactly equal quality, objectively.
yeah, I saw the teaser during the superbowl live and it blew my mind and made me so hyped for the film. I actually ended up buying and reading the novelization first, before seeing the movie. but the novel used the original ending. which i didn't know about. my local wal-mart had also gotten in the tie-in comic. but that used the theatrical ending.
I remember flipping thru it in the store, but seeing the panels of the ending, i caught sight of a fighter jet and pilot flying into the main weapon, instead of the crop duster like the original ending, and I slammed the book shut. I thought they had changed the ending so President Whitmore sacrificed himself and feared i had just spoiled myself. when i finally got to see the film i was confused at first, then got what they did.

If I remember right (I was really young when it came out) the first movie had really good cgi and practical effects for the time. The second not so much it looked like just about everything else but slightly lower quality. That’s kinda where the first movie beats out the second for me.
This movie legitimately gets me every time. It is such a sweeping epic, with fantastic characters. Not alot of movies can achieve this these days.
Precisely. Name me one modern-day 2010's-2020's movie that can hold up a candle to Independence Day. So far, I have not come across much in that department.
10:11 his reaction to the "earthquake" is so funny and sooo nonchalant! We had an actual earthquake a while ago at 2am (unheard of here) and I thought it was the most exciting thing ever! I couldn't go back to sleep from pure excitement. I've never done one of those before, it was crazy but exciting. My survival instincts stink!!!😂
The military dropped its support for this movie when they read the Area 51 part. Also, the first trailer for this movie was during the Superbowl. They said it was the last Superbowl and only showed the alien craft entering the atmosphere.
This movie was huge at the time.
I don't think it gets enough credit nowadays, but it was awesome seeing it at the cinema in 1996.
Obviously it has a Stargate vibe, as it's the same Producer / Director team.
Some of the scenes are a bit dated now, but they were good at doing certain effects without too huge of a budget.
But overall, it has held up very well. The CG effects in the battles still looks great, imo.
It has just the right amount of humour to keep it fun. Just a perfect "popcorn" movie / summer blockbuster.

Oh, and when I bought my first AV receiver with Dolby Digital and DTS (around 1999), then bought my first DVD player and subwoofer, this movie was used a LOT as a test disk. lol
Especially the first huge explosion of the skyscrapers, it sounds amazing on a big surround system with a decent subwoofer.
It's also a movie with a very simple premise. You don't have to "think" too much when watching it. lol
I also really enjoyed the 1998 Godzilla movie (same Dean Devlin / Roland Emmerich team as ID4).
For some reason, that movie gets slated by some people, but I'm not sure why.
Probably because they are comparing to some of the original Japanese Godzilla classics.
The 1998 movie was just another big (and slightly dumb) summer blockbuster with some great effects. I thought it was great.
@@electronashBack then, I worked in a rather tough and demanding job. But I looked forward to the weekends when I could go to the cinema to get a break from it all. And those movies were the perfect form of escapism.

I remember seeing Sixth Sense at the cinema in 1999, after work.
I only had a thin t-shirt on (because we normally wore a cleanroom bunny suit all day), and it was cold outside.
The cinema still had the AC on though, so it was so even colder in there. We were shivering, and could see our own breath.
But you know what, it added to the atmosphere of the movie, and we were just glad to switch off from work for a bit.

From German director, Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is one of his best work to date followed by The Patriot (2000) with Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger, Universal Soldier (1992) with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, and Stargate (1994) with Kurt Russell and Jaye Davidson.
Glad you guys liked it. ID4 as it was known is still a guilty pleasure to me. Even now 25 yrs on I still think the city destruction sequences are benchmarks in special effects.

As a veteran who had to get a Secret security clearance when I entered the Army, they do take all aspects of your life and your loved ones too. It's not just about her being a stripper. It is often that those places attract unsavory folks who might tempt her with certain things for secrets.
I loved this movie as a kid and I think it still keeps up to this day. The aesthetic, the realness of the special effects, the chemistry among the actors... everything just works
The effects hold up because they are practical models being destroyed.

The effects are mostly practical. CG is mostly used for compositing.
Not just the sets and effects, but the characters who despite their flaws all found redemption through the events of the movie.
This movie has one of the best scores ever, imo. It just so perfectly fits and elevates every single scene.

I’ve always liked the parallel with this movie and with The War of the Worlds. In the War of the Worlds, the invading aliens “caught a cold” and were killed by a biological virus/bacteria.
I watched this when it came out with my family. I remember it so well even tjough i was small. When they dissected the biosuit from the alien and it sprung open i shouted,
"IT'S THE GRISWOLD'S TURKEY!"
Everyone in the theatre laughed.

From a SFX standpoint, nearly 30 years on, this movie stands the test of time. The aliens look alien. The action sequences are top notch. The destruction of landmarks are the best in cinematic history. This movie has a realistic feel about it that cheaper movies of the era lack, and that modern movies try to solve with CGI.
Russell's sacrifice is STILL one of the best "goes out like an absolute badass!" Deaths ever put to film, complete with a killer '90s one liner.
Fun reaction! I really hope you give Dante's Peak a chance someday. Stunning effects that still hold up, intense score, simple but effective story, and a lot more effort put into accurate science and phenomena than your typical disaster film (though some Hollywood BS is required for drama). It's been a longtime favorite of mine in the genre.

Definitely agree with this sentiment. I enjoyed DP more than Volcano, even though the latter pulled in more money at box office. Got to give it up Hollywood Doppelgängers.

Still it seemed utter unbelievable to me. The only believable scene for me was the beginning of the movie. Enjoyed it still more then Volcano, because it was at least not traumatizing.

Fun fact the man that was alone in the office building while the city is exploding is Volker Engle the man who actually did the special effects for Independence Day and he won an award for it. Considering how well the effects hold up almost three decades later he earned it.
Extra fun fact: The president’s daughter is played by a young Mae Whitman who voices Katara in Avatar the last Airbender

This is a special movie for me. My mom used to watch it a lot when it came out on VHS and I would fall asleep to this movie in her bed next to her. It was this and Fifth Element.

This is probably one of, if not, my favorite scene in the entire movie.
Seen this movie opening night .it was the first realistic looking movie. We laughed cried cheered and screamed at the top of our lungs when he blew up the first saucer .randy Quaid sacrificing himself. What a movie .I will never forget that night almost 30 yrs later
Fun fact. The actor who played the long haired scientist who was running Area 51 was played by Brent Spiner. The actor who is most known for playing Comander Data on Star Trek The Nex Generation TV series and films. I also think the same people who created this film made the Stargate film. The effects and designs of the tech has a very similar feel. Look totally different but it feels the same. This was the better film of the two but just another little tidbit.
This was the better film but that Stargate movie inspired a multiple TV series that lasted over 10 seasons.
@brandonreed09 I agree and I liked the Stargate series. The film didn't get people as invested as independence day did but that was corrected when they built that series. Especially with the potential for world building it allowed.

I always loved how the whole movie made Randy Quaids character out to be a crazy drunken fool ,but by the end he was right all along and sacrifices himself with a badass 1 liner and LITERALLY saves the entire planet🤌 man it's been a while since I sat back and watched this movie. I almost forgot 😂 sooo good
The Presidents speech was not meant to be on the final cut. They hadn't written it yet so Bill Pullman was asked to improvise a speech and he delivered that. The reaction of the extras was genuine and the director decided to keep it. Great choice.
This is just what I need after an insanely busy day at work. I love this movie! I first watched it years ago at my neighbours house (was about 15) and my neighbour was convinced he was going to be the next president of the US and it ended up with me wanting to be the first lady (had a crush on him)😂. Can't wait guys!
This movie was super hyped in the 90s a great trailer. Theaters were packed. The sequel is pretty decent too.
Ehhh. The sequel was meh. It was cool seeing what humanity did with the alien tech, but then they just did a complete plot rehash of the first movie.
Imagine if the sequel had been an epic war across the solar system as humanity tries to prevent the alien mothership from reaching Earth. Realistically, it landing would be a world-ending scenario all by itself.

I have to say, I saw this movie on the weekend it premiered, with a huge crowd, and the energy was amazing; one thing I appreciate a lot about your reaction, is how invested, and how seriously you take it. So many times, when people in their 20s today watch films from the 80s, etc. it can be really hard for the films not to seem cheesy, or quaint, or to have the less-sophisticated effects be a stumbling block. I think it says something about this movie, but also, more so your (all four of you) ability and willingness to invest, suspend disbelief, and meet the movie where it is at. When you mentioned earlier on "this is like a horror film," and were really *feeling* the stakes, the cities being destroyed, etc. it hit me, that outside of its cultural context, now 30 years later, I think you guys took the movie more "seriously" (for lack of a better word) than the original audience did. When it came out, it was very much a popcorn film, a big epic fun rollercoaster, with some jokes from the time that are now missed all these years later; I love that you guys are like, all right, the world is getting destroyed," and you aren't taking it lightly - and in that way, more sincere, more willing to invest, than the audiences of the time. I really appreciate that.

This movie was highly anticipated and it didn’t disappoint. It was a *huge* deal. I can still remember the Taco Bell commercials that ran when it came out. They used that scene of the guy with blond, curly hair in New York, running from the blast. What it had to do with the food, I don’t remember. Lol.
This is still one of my top movies for the writing, the comedy, the drama, the effects, everything. Ugh, and I still cry when the First Lady dies and the daughter is asking if she’s sleeping. 😭😭😭😭

I was a teen when this movie came out and it was epic seeing this in Theaters. It was this movie and Titanic that made me a fan of disaster movies too because I loved seeing different POVs and stories coming together to try and overcome something epic. Anyway, at the same time though, this movie hits differently for me and possibly others after 9/11 happened. Like you see the Twin Towers in this movie. For me personally, watching 9/11 coverage live at the time felt surreal because it reminded me of this movie because you saw people running on the streets and seeing those twin towers fall . . . yeah. I still love this movie, it just makes me emotional seeing it.
Also THANK YOU for actually showing the parts of the other countries banding together (Middle East, Germany, Japan) and celebrating (Africa, Egypt, Australia). I haven't seen any other reaction channel show those 2 parts and I feel they are important.
The "you will never be an astronaut if you marry a stripper" is pretty much true from what I understand. Its a super competitive position that require a huge commitment and focus. A rocky marriage would be considered a liability.
I still think this is one of the best world ending movies. To think this was only Will Smith's 4th or 5th movie. Best thing in the beginning too is that its kind of realistic. The president did the best he could in the short amount of time he had, they tried to communicate first cautiously, everyone acted quickly. It's great.

My mom and I went to the theater at least 6 times, probably more, to watch this movie. It was just so epic and so FUN. One of the best of the 90's for sure.
One of my favourite movies, it has everything action, Sci fi, romance, adventure, comedy, drama. I think it deserves more praise then it gets.
This is easily my favorite sci-fi movie about aliens. I love that it goes straight into the action, and even though we get those little moments, we also just keep on going. And all the actors did a FANTASTIC job.

I remember watching this with my wife on opening weekend in a jammed packed theatre. When the first missile hit the mothership the whole place erupted into cheers. This is one of the few movies I’ve been to where the audience was fully invested.
What I love about Independence Day is it all kicks off straight away pretty much.

@@bhelliom3 No I don’t think their _Independence Day_ reaction was on their Patreon back in July, they all had several different film reactions with their _Tron_ reaction being the most recent one they did together as it was released on July 13 through Patreon and publicly on July 20. Eventually following the Tron reaction, the girls (Hailey and Stella) went on a vacation for 2-3 weeks hence the _Tron: Legacy_ and _Oblivion_ Reactions that were released 2-3 weeks ago respectively were both done by just James and Nobu and not all four of them.
Their _Independence Day_ reaction happened sometime after the girls returned from their 2-3 week vacation so around the first 7 days of August (August 1-7) and James admitted during the intro of the video they missed the timing on doing a reaction for this film last month because they were likely reacting to other movies at the time such as _District 9, Elysium,_ and _Edge of Tomorrow._

I was in the movie theater when I saw this movie. The crowd was so engaged. They cheered and clapped. It was great!
Glad you all enjoyed this movie, it was one of my favorites growing up. When ever this, The Indiana Jones trilogy or The Mummy (1999) came on television I had to stop channel surfing and watch, didn't matter how far into the movie it was.
Still THE definitive "alien invasion" movie for me. I really urge you to watch the sequel, too. Yeah, it doesn't reach the heights of the first one, but it's still really cool. Especially because time passed in the sequel is exactly as many years as between the two movies, so you get to see what the world has become since the end of this movie.
That and Mars Attack, for complete different reasons 😂🤣😂, are my go-to alien invasion movies
That part with the relatable likable characters is something they need to relearn in Hollywood.

This was great viewing at the cinema, as you say an epic sci-fi. Took me back to seeing Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back at the cinema, yep, I'm one of the older viewers on here! Keep up the good work.
One of my favorite movies that I saw at the theater when it opened in Denmark. Once I got in on VHS, I watched it so many times, one time five time in a day, that I could recite almost all the lines. Can't today, though.
The whole theater room jolted as the alien's suit popped open, and then once they'd given everyone's heart rates a chance to leveled themselves out to normal, BAM, another jump scare as Dr. Okun was tossed up against the glass of the room.
'Dr Okun' is played by the 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' legacy actor, Brent Spiner, who played the incredible android, 'Data', on the show, which is an all-time favorite show of mine. The first lady was played by Mary McDonnell, who later starred in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica sci-fi show in the 2000s. Also an all-time favorite show of mine. This movie has so many outstanding actors in it.

Finally, someone who mentions this. I remember when I was at the theater I was the only one who recognized him and because I was so surprised to see him I bursted out: "Oh, this is Brent Spiner, who plays Data in Stark Trek - TNG"! People turned to me and it made me smile and also a little proud when I heard others repeating it from one seating row to the next. And at that time not so many ladies were huge Star Trek fans which made it even better. Fun memories.

If you're after another alien invasion movie, might I suggest *_Mars Attacks_* ? It's from 1996 and directed by Tim Burton and has Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J Fox, and even baby-sized Jack Black and Natalie Portman!! Need I say more?? 😁😁
