That was really a sad scene to watch. The only thing i would have done differently in that scene though, is that the people had literally frozen in place while still standing upright, like frozen statues, like they had frozen mid-step. This would have been a throwback to the scene in the museum, where the science nerd guy had commented about the woolly mammoth that had been found, seemingly frozen solid with its food still in its mouth. It would have made a very eerie scene, the dad running into them, thinking he had run into some survivors, but they really weren't.
It could be that all those people died of hypothermia before the sub zero snow storm froze them solid. Like the cop in the earlier scene tried to wake up a couple of people but they wouldn't

Funny enough, the last two times I have seen this movie, I laugh when ice cracks, thinking of that very character. Then I get annoyed, because this is my favourite disaster guilty pleasure movie.
Dante's Peak is one of my favourite disaster movies! With Pierce Brosnan! I watched it on a school trip when i was 12 years old... and i still love it!
I'm pretty sure birds can feel the air pressure dropping before a storm is coming. I don't know how it is with other animals but my dog gets pretty scared of thunderstorms. A few days after i first got him, i took him for a walk. It was a pretty hot and humid day. Suddenly he put his nose up and smelled the air, then instantly stopped walking and wanted me to turn around. I did eventually and low and behold, not even half an hour after i returned home, it started raining and thundering, eventually turning into a summer storm. He's done it a few times now and i can pretty much always rely on him to know when a storm is coming even if i don't see any lighting or thunderclouds yet. It's fascinating really.
Love this! Dogs (all animals, really) are amazing creatures that are *so* much more intelligent, emotional and intuitive than many people realize. In that same vein, many years ago a friend of mine started dating a new guy that was very polite, affable and seemingly trustworthy. Everyone liked him...except my dog. Brownie (my dog) was friendly with everyone and just loved people, but whenever my friend came around with her new boyfriend, he became very tense and restless. He even growled at the guy a couple of times, something he NEVER did to anyone. Turns out, this guy was a POS and was verbally and physically abusive to my friend. No one could believe it because he fooled us all...except for Brownie. That dog had dude's number from day one.
That scene where the dad is in the eye and he's getting his buddy into the top of the restaurant to avoid the cold, he looks up and the flag that was slack furls out and freezes instantly ... that's the most iconic image in the entire movie. Just so well done.
One of my all time favorite disaster movies. When I was younger, I wouldn't even pay attention to the story. I just wanted to re-watch the tornadoes, the flooding and the freezing again and again.

One thing I must share. I watched this movie about month after release. When Dennis Quaid met the scottish doctor in New Delhi, it was snowing there and I thought "thats in India, that will not happen". Next day I saw a weather forecast and IT WAS SNOWING IN NEW DELHI. It got me one of the worst situational spine-chills in my life.

Yes and then 9/11 happened and for a while, after that Hollywood didn't make any disaster movies (especially none with skyscrapers or planes...) and when they started up again they were those overly patriotic military movies with aliens. It's getting better now. The new Twisters seems to be good.

It was the golden decade for disaster movies, horror movies and spoof movies. Then late 2000s-early 2010s was the zombie golden age and from 2010s onward is the superhero decade which overtook pretry much every other genre in term of popularity and box office.

Pretty interesting disaster movie, and I like it. There are no pointless villains. Every character is at least decent, and many of them are even heroic. Take the main group of students, for example. They're all academic decathlon participants with no issues with the law, alcohol, or else. And it still works somehow. The movie's global disaster itself is fantasy-ish, of course, but it doesn’t feel too nonsensical, which is good. And the ending is intense if you think about it. The entire northern hemisphere is gone, along with all the global superpowers. The world would never be even remotely the same. Bold!

That scene where the tv guy is sent flying with the sign has been with me this entire 20 years. Idk why but it stucks with me. I remember even seeing it for the first time in the trailer at the time. It's like a trauma 😭

Emerich just put what would take decades, slowly, on uber fast forward for the movie. Day after Tomorrow was grounded in science, 2012 is utter lunacy that has jumped the tracks, and i LOVE it.
Man I forget how much I enjoyed this movie when I was young. I feel like these movies, just all around solid B movies, are what the industry is missing today. Looks good in a theater, couple big stars, couple young stars, and super rewatchable…that’s what we need!

A series of volcanic eruptions brought world temperatures down an average of 4.5 degrees F worldwide, resulting in a "volcanic winter" which brought severe cold temperatures and darkness across Europe until around the year 660 CE and in Asia till 680 CE. It's considered to be the "worst year to be alive" in recorded human history, resulting in 25-50 million deaths across the Mediterranean alone. There were massive crop failures, famine, and collapse of civilizations, which lasted almost 135 years. So just a 5 degree temperature shift can have catastrophic results.
The Day after Tomorrow is kind of what Deep Impact is for Asteroid films but for catastrophic Earth event. If you liked the chorale developpement of characters and deeper tone, I fairly recommend Deep Impact then!
Around 45:27 the guy holding on to A Bible because he thinks it was the first book ever printed. The Latin Language, Gutenberg Bible was printed in 1455. However, the Diamond Sutra, A Buddhist book from China was printed in around 868AD. Gutenberg actually used replaceable metal instead of wood panels so it was more similar to modern Printing Presses than the earlier Chinese method of Wood Panels, which is more similar to the screen printing you may have done in school using carved linoleum

If he had kept it a little more (pardon the pun) grounded, then I would have found it much better. Just my opinion, and my preferences. Avatar suspended physics with its floating islands, but it was another planet, not earth, which made it better.

Damn, this movie made me remember hailstorm back in 90' where it was literally shitting as huge balls as in this movie. Cars with bend places where these balls felt, glass broken, some windows too, my mum even got hit by smaller one in the shoulder (as we were going to my grandparents) and she was crazy scared. Everyone was scared. So much destruction! Never it my life I would think something this big can fall from the sky. Uncle throw one in the sink and it was melting for hour
This movie is so good. The science was a bit massaged for dramatic effect, but the scale of the destruction was impressive. This is theoretically possible, but on a much longer time scale. That whole "we thought we had another 100 years" thing. It would probably be longer than that even, but it made for good storytelling.
Ooh! A phenomenal newer disaster film I watched recently is called “Greenland.” If you guys are continuing the disaster binge, definitely recommend checking out!
My boarding school in Oklahoma took the ENTIRE campus to go see this movie at our local theater and it was on a night thay we had a thunderstorm. We were in Oklahoma so the Tornado in L.A scene had all of us in awe. The sound design on this film was (chefs kiss) I also vividly remember the teaser trailer for this with clips of actual storms and news reporters and being like "OOOH, ANOTHER DISASTER FILM!? YES PLEASE!". At the end, it show a snow covered NYC and the voice-over saying "Save as many as you can" There was also a few times they put fake billboards in the ocean to look like they washed up on shore as a promotion for the film.
Everyone who sees this movie seems to comment about the "shoe being on the other foot" with the border crossing. What most don't realize is Mexico has always had a tough immigration policy. It's just that it doesn't often happen US to Mexico. It's mostly the other way around. People fussed about "the wall" but Mexico already has a wall separating them from rest of Central and South America. Great reaction!
DANTE’s PEAK!!!! It’s a classic volcano movie. Had the guy from original James bind and the lady that played the original Sarah Connor from the terminator series
The real scary thing is that the North Atlantic conveyor belt 4:40 IS actually slowing down. If it stops, it won't cause the weather problems in this movie but humanity will be screwed.

When Ari mentioned Jason feeling discombobulated from passing out and then waking up elsewhere, it brought a vivid memory to mind...I will preface this story by stating that I have had epilepsy for most of my life... Years ago, my friend and I were driving back from a pizza place in a neighboring city. I was driving my two-seater truck, my friend holding our pizza box in his lap in the passenger seat. I started feeling a bit light-headed as we were singing bohemian rhapsody at the tops of our lungs, heading down the highway. Next thing I know, I'm feeling groggy in the PASSENGER SEAT of my truck holding the pizza, and my friend was now driving. He soon informed me I had had a seizure while driving. My foot had slammed on the gas, and my arms & hands locked on the wheel. He had to fight my convulsing body off and save us both from crashing into a median or other vehicle! Talk about wake-up calls!😅
HOLY CRAP, that is an insane story!! First of all, we're glad you got out of that safely and that your friend was able to step in - wow! We can't imagine how terrifying that must have been!

It stars Dustin Hoffman, a young Samuel L Jackson, Sharon Stone, and a very young Leiv Schrieber. Even an cameo role by Queen Latifah! It's a great mind-bender about a potentially extraterrestrial encounter on the ocean floor, in a ship that has been under the sea for nearly 300 years! I think it's right up Y'all's alley! Iceland really is stunning. Also the people are very hospitable. In my experience anyways. Spent a week in Reykjavik a couple of decades ago. I had a local friend, who gave his bed to sleep in. I told him, that I'd be happy to sleep on the couch. But he insisted. We also got invited to a housewarming party. Even my friend didn't know the hosts. First thing the hosts did after we entered their home was pointing where the punch is. And the bowl got constantly refilled.
Funny thing about the movie "Twister" for nearly 30 minutes in the middle of the movie, they have no other dialogue than "get down' "Look out' "Oh shit' , just expletives for a third of the movie.
I'm from the Philippines where we expect 19-22 storms per year, at least 1 or 2 can be devastating. I have personally experienced 3 extreme storms so far. The last time was December 2021. My entire family of six had to squeeze inside a 2x2 size toilet since the rest of the house was torn apart by strong winds. Had the strong winds continued for another 30 minutes we would have been covered with debris. It was terrifying I did not even worry about my safety, the fear for the safety of my siblings and my mother was so overwhelming.
What makes this movie even more eerie is the year it came out. Kinda feels like it was a foreshadowing for the big Tsunami wave on 26th December 2004...Those Tsunami scenes gave me serious flashbacks to the pictures/videos from the real events that were shown on TV...And now, 20 years later we still haven't changed much which makes this movie still important up to this day. Nice reaction like allways guys🙂

In a recentish interview Jake found out that he was costarring in this film with Dennis which implies they never had any scenes with each other in real life.
This is a nostalgia hit for me. I remember being a kid and watching the scene where he's talking to his dad on the payphone while the water was rising. That shit literally gave me nightmares.
I was working for Regal Cinemas when this came out. A few of us stayed after closing on Thursday night to 'screen' it before it opened. I was expecting more on how mankind would adapt afterwards. I'm glad the story didn't go too political and showed more of the science of things.
I'm not a very good flier, and when I saw this scene in the theater, my hands got SUPER clammy. Also, when the masks fell, I hear is Homer Simpson in my head, "AAAAHHH!!! We're all gonna die!!!" So, from Philadelphia to Manhattan is about a day on foot. But, with snow and a storm on top of that, you're looking at at least three, maybe four days walk. Ari: "I would move to a tropical place." Me: To Hawaii!! I love how this movie makes you feel: fear, discouraged, cold, and small in the face of Nature. I am very happy you guys watched this one. I saw this film at the cinema in the summer when it came out, and because of all those "glacial" images on that huge screen, sound effects and air conditioning, I remember feeling almost cold

Check out the Perfect Storm. Its based on the 1991 storm that impacted the east coast. It's was insane. Bouys in the north Atlantic recorded waves of over 100ft.
It still amuses me that, in an old-fashioned library full of wooden chairs, wooden tables, wooden bookshelves, wooden doors and wooden wall panelling, their first resort is "Burn the books!"
As an LA native I remember watching this as a kid and thinking how crazy a tornado scenario would be here. Got to live it last year when a tornado touched down at work right here in Montebello. Crazy how real this movie has become in just a couple decades
There is "The Day After Tomorrow" film and "The Day After". First one is action apocalypse film. Second one is far more terrifying apocalypse movie. And only 20 years were between them

Pretty interesting disaster movie, and I like it. There are no pointless villains. Every character is at least decent, and many of them are even heroic. Take the main group of students, for example. They're all academic decathlon participants with no issues with the law, alcohol, or else. And it still works somehow. The movie's global disaster itself is fantasy-ish, of course, but it doesn’t feel too nonsensical, which is good. And the ending is intense if you think about it. The entire northern hemisphere is gone, along with all the global superpowers. The world would never be even remotely the same. Bold!

Day after Tomorrow was grounded in science, 2012 is utter lunacy that has jumped the tracks, and i LOVE it.
Man I forget how much I enjoyed this movie when I was young. I feel like these movies, just all around solid B movies, are what the industry is missing today. Looks good in a theater, couple big stars, couple young stars, and super rewatchable…that’s what we need!

The Day after Tomorrow is kind of what Deep Impact is for Asteroid films but for catastrophic Earth event. If you liked the chorale developpement of characters and deeper tone, I fairly recommend Deep Impact then!

Around 45:27 the guy holding on to A Bible because he thinks it was the first book ever printed. The Latin Language, Gutenberg Bible was printed in 1455. However, the Diamond Sutra, A Buddhist book from China was printed in around 868AD. Gutenberg actually used replaceable metal instead of wood panels so it was more similar to modern Printing Presses than the earlier Chinese method of Wood Panels, which is more similar to the screen printing you may have done in school using carved linoleum

If he had kept it a little more (pardon the pun) grounded, then I would have found it much better. Just my opinion, and my preferences. Avatar suspended physics with its floating islands, but it was another planet, not earth, which made it better.

I just watched it tonight on TNT, then saw this reaction when I opened RUclips.
Damn, this movie made me remember hailstorm back in 90' where it was literally shitting as huge balls as in this movie.
Cars with bend places where these balls felt, glass broken, some windows too, my mum even got hit by smaller one in the shoulder (as we were going to my grandparents) and she was crazy scared. Everyone was scared.

This movie is so good. The science was a bit massaged for dramatic effect, but the scale of the destruction was impressive. This is theoretically possible, but on a much longer time scale. That whole "we thought we had another 100 years" thing. It would probably be longer than that even, but it made for good storytelling.

My boarding school in Oklahoma took the ENTIRE campus to go see this movie at our local theater and it was on a night thay we had a thunderstorm. We were in Oklahoma so the Tornado in L.A scene had all of us in awe. The sound design on this film was (chefs kiss)
I also vividly remember the teaser trailer for this with clips of actual storms and news reporters and being like "OOOH, ANOTHER DISASTER FILM!? YES PLEASE!". At the end, it show a snow covered NYC and the voice-over saying "Save as many as you can"
There was also a few times they put fake billboards in the ocean to look like they washed up on shore as a promotion for the film.

I was 5 when I first saw this, it’s the first film in my memory that made me cry.
This movie was so prophetic when you look at the polar vortex from 2018.
The bullseye passed right over me, wind chills of -80 degrees.
Everyone who sees this movie seems to comment about the "shoe being on the other foot" with the border crossing. What most don't realize is Mexico has always had a tough immigration policy. It's just that it doesn't often happen US to Mexico. It's mostly the other way around. People fussed about "the wall" but Mexico already has a wall separating them from rest of Central and South America. Great reaction!
They're already getting fed up with Americans in Mexico City...the irony.
The fact is other countries have stricter immigration laws than the US does but only the US is wrong for enforcing them 🤣

The real scary thing is that the North Atlantic conveyor belt 4:40 IS actually slowing down. If it stops, it won't cause the weather problems in this movie but humanity will be screwed.

When Ari mentioned Jason feeling discombobulated from passing out and then waking up elsewhere, it brought a vivid memory to mind...I will preface this story by stating that I have had epilepsy for most of my life...
Years ago, my friend and I were driving back from a pizza place in a neighboring city. I was driving my two-seater truck, my friend holding our pizza box in his lap in the passenger seat. I started feeling a bit light-headed as we were singing bohemian rhapsody at the tops of our lungs, heading down the highway.
Next thing I know, I'm feeling groggy in the PASSENGER SEAT of my truck holding the pizza, and my friend was now driving. He soon informed me I had had a seizure while driving. My foot had slammed on the gas, and my arms & hands locked on the wheel. He had to fight my convulsing body off and save us both from crashing into a median or other vehicle!
Talk about wake-up calls!😅

Iceland really is stunning. Also the people are very hospitable. In my experience anyways. Spent a week in Reykjavik a couple of decades ago. I had a local friend, who gave his bed to sleep in. I told him, that I'd be happy to sleep on the couch. But he insisted. We also got invited to a housewarming party. Even my friend didn't know the hosts. First thing the hosts did after we entered their home was pointing where the punch is. And the bowl got constantly refilled.
Funny thing about the movie "Twister" for nearly 30 minutes in the middle of the movie, they have no other dialogue than "get down' "Look out' "Oh shit' , just expletives for a third of the movie.

I'm from the Philippines where we expect 19-22 storms per year, at least 1 or 2 can be devastating. I have personally experienced 3 extreme storms so far. The last time was December 2021. My entire family of six had to squeeze inside a 2x2 size toilet since the rest of the house was torn apart by strong winds. Had the strong winds continued for another 30 minutes we would have been covered with debris. It was terrifying I did not even worry about my safety, the fear for the safety of my siblings and my mother was so overwhelming.

What makes this movie even more eerie is the year it came out. Kinda feels like it was a foreshadowing for the big Tsunami wave on 26th December 2004...Those Tsunami scenes gave me serious flashbacks to the pictures/videos from the real events that were shown on TV...And now, 20 years later we still haven't changed much which makes this movie still important up to this day.

I was working for Regal Cinemas when this came out. A few of us stayed after closing on Thursday night to 'screen' it before it opened. I was expecting more on how mankind would adapt afterwards. I'm glad the story didn't go too political and showed more of the science of things.
The last line and the last shot of the movie have stuck with me ever since I first saw it in the theater. Weirdly scary yet beautiful and poignant.

I'm not a very good flier, and when I saw this scene in the theater, my hands got SUPER clammy. Also, when the masks fell, I hear is Homer Simpson in my head, "AAAAHHH!!! We're all gonna die!!!"
So, from Philadelphia to Manhattan is about a day on foot. But, with snow and a storm on top of that, you're looking at at least three, maybe four days walk.

Check out the Perfect Storm. Its based on the 1991 storm that impacted the east coast. It's was insane. Bouys in the north Atlantic recorded waves of over 100ft.
