The irony of this movie in particular being bombed by critics while adored by its fanbase is not lost on me. I mean, that was the moral wasn't it? You don't need a panel of judges to tell you when you've done a good job, you just know.

One reason I like this movie is because Atom fights like none of the other bots in the movie do. Charlie teaches him how to box, guides him like a boxing coach would, even shadowboxes Atom's strikes to guide him. It's an inherently humanizing aspect of the underdog, whereas other competitors use tech to achieve the fastest dodges, the strongest strikes. Charlie, however, translates his own boxing experience and uses that as an edge none of the competitors have. He finds a way, like humans always do

It was an imperfect but big hearted action film that was much better than it deserved to be. I knew it wasn't a masterpiece but man I respected its uniqueness. I think the combination of the kind of heart it had with the kind of people who love robot action has its own innate tensions.
I'm not surprised it blew your boy brain. I just watched it with my 7 yr old son this evening. He always wants to watch RUclips but I force him to stretch his narrative attention occasionally. I knew he'd complain but also still watch because it was a screen with fighting robots and a tough angry boy. He was gradually enthralled.
Curiously it was also the first time he didn't shift attention much or lunge about when there was sexuality/romance. When Jackman kissed Lily and she cried towards the finale he didn't even flinch, which surprised me.

I watched this movie a lotttt with my dad when I was younger. This was my (our) favorite movie. We had a CD copy of it so I was able to rewatch it whenever I wanted to. Then my dad worked overseas. After years of working there he returned and chose to stay back here with us after 8+ years. Unfortunately, what I didn't know was that he was suffering with depression for years. I know that I had to do something to help but I didn't know what to do and how to do it. I was a dumb and young 15 year old. I now live my life full of regret. I blame myself for what happened. I think it's just ironic/beautiful that the movie we bonded over was about a father and son reconnecting after being separated for so long, which I guess is similar to how my father worked overseas and returned. The only difference is I failed to reconnect and know him again. I've been recollecting things and moments I've shared with my dad ever since he passed, it's nice that this movie popped in my yt feed. I'll definitely cherish this movie even more, and rewatch it with him in mind.

I barely rewatch movies, but Real Steel is one of the very few on the list of movies I rewatch from time to time.

Real Steel and The Wild Robot really complement each other for me. Robots? Fuck yeah. Family? Also fuck yeah.

I loved this movie and still do. I definitely have been shedding the rose tinted glasses a bit and realizing it wasn't the best movie of all time like I thought 10 years ago, but it's a ton of fun and I can rewatch it endlessly.

Real steel was such a big part of my childhood just like Transformers and Pacific rim. I remember 6 year old me begging my parents to watch the movie. I remember collecting the figures and playing all of the games for Real Steel

Real steel is classic man, in my top 10 favorite movies and top 3 most watched movies all time for sure. 10 year old me loved this movie so much I would watch it and then rewatch it again right after sometimes. I would watch it multiple times a week and sometimes back to back days. I also was always so so so mad atom lost in the end.

I swear i remember loving this movie when i watched as a youngling, but i only ever saw it once and always forgot the name, and whenever i shed details i remembered, no one i spoke to knew what i was talking about, to the point where i decided i had dreamt it or just confused it with some other robot movie ( usually the iron giant which i haven’t watched and this other one I forget the name)
2 years or so ago i got some youtube recommendation of someone mentioning real steel , and then i went back to never hearing it again. And now I’m seeing it again so IN CONCLUSION IM JUST HAPPY IM NOT CLINICALLY INSANE!!!!!!

    1. Real steel had an ad for the Xbox 720 (in the arena in the zeus fight)
    2. The xbox 360 arcade game that was actually pretty good

True. It was all about character development and the journey. At this point in time, if Real Steel just became an action movie, it would have directly competed with Transformers, which had tons of robot action scenes.
