The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Two great Irving Berlin classics sung by his favorite singer of songs, Ethel Merman. I'm guessing this was arranged by the great Roger Edens who was with Merman since 1930 when he was the pit pianist for GIRL CRAZY. He wrote special material for her until he died in 1970. They were great close chums according to Merman's son, Robert Levitt. Of course Edens also was instrumental in the early career of Judy Garland. He was her devoted friend and mentor and special material writer for her as well until the end of her life. I read a piece somewhere when in 1935 Edens reported back to Merman about Garland, that he heard "this kid with an adult voice." He said to Merman, "she's going to be a big star." Merman said; "well, don't teach her any of my tricks." Love! that. I wonder what vocal "tricks" she was referring to? Anyway, Ethel & Judy were good pals up to the end of Judy's life in 1969. In fact, on New Years Eve 60/61, Judy came to see GYPSY (again). Very uncharacteristicly, upon Merman's entrance down the isle , she stopped at Judy's seat on the isle and greeted and hugged her, then proceeded down the isle to stop Uncle Joko's kiddy show dead in its tracks.
If you can believe this, back in the disco 70s, I danced to Ethel Merman's "disco" LP...ha! She was such a good sport and a fantastic entertainer.
Wonderful to see Miss Merman making her debut on this channel. Now please bring on Kay Starr, Vikki Carr and the Mc.Guire sisters!
Wow! I never saw this Ethel Merman performance before! I love the approach Merman takes with the number - she's alone but she knows she's going to find someone else - except for the moment of doubt when she moves into ALL ALONE. But she gets over the doubt in good time to wind up the number with thrilling optimism. This woman is NOT going to be alone for long! And listen to how beautifully she modulates her voice throughout the entire number. THANK YOU, Ed Sullivan Show! Now, will you let us see a sterling copy of I GOT THE SUN INTHE MORNING?
The great Ethel Merman; thanks for posting this! Thanks for not cutting up the medley too! I'd also like to see Steve Rossi sing "Dommage, Dommage" from this episode, that's a beautiful song.
The First Lady of the Musical Comedy Stage...Singing to the back row of the auditorium...what projection...and really glad to hear the orchestra didn't overplay the arrangement either...We're waiting for her massive, gigantic performance of 'There's No Business, like Show Business...' She even played Lola Lasagne on Batman(1967)
Now this is good tv, not the Ellen show.
Apparently this performance was three weeks after her daughter died from an " accidental suicide. ". Sad. 😟
Her daughter died in 1967
Hi. Its wonderful that you are uploading so many celebrities on Sullivan show but wheres Loretta Lynn's I Wanna Be Free? Saw that the audio of the performance was uploaded just the other day. Keep doing what you're doing and please share the performance I'm eagerly awaiting. Lol. Big Loretta Lynn fan here. Thanks
I've noticed that happening quite a bit; audio being uploaded but not the videos. It's a shame because there are a bunch of audio clips that I would love to see the video footage of. Not sure what the point is in uploading audio without video.
She's alone. Got it.
