- Опубликовано: 6 окт 2024
- The Ethel Merman segment of this show, featuring the only performance of Astaire and Merman together. Their first association was thirty-six years earlier when Astaire choreographed number in Merman's debut Broadway show, the Gershwin's Girl Crazy (also starring Ginger Rogers).
Here Merman sings her special adaptation of Some People (Styne, Sondheim) followed by a medley with Fred, including "I Got Rhythm" (Astaire), "Everything's Coming Up Roses" (Merman), "Let's Face the Music and Dance" (Astaire/Merman), "I Get A Kick Out Of You" (Merman), "Cheek To Cheek" (Astaire), "Putting on the Ritz" (Merman), "They Say it's Wonderful" (Astaire & Merman), "Anything Goes" (Astaire/Merman)
Aired Saturday 9:30 PM Mar 12, 1966 on ABC
There not being a filmed version of her in Gypsy is such a crime. She was amazing.
I agree. I did find an audio recording of what is supposed to be the final performance in Gypsy, ruclips.net/video/g4lOiej0kNw/видео.html&pp=ygUiZWh0aGVsIG1lcm1hbiBneXBzeSBhdWRpbyBjb21wbGV0ZQ%3D%3D
Todays generation has just missed this kind of charm and talent. They have no idea.
No they really have NO idea! No way! Merci Beaucoup! Emmanuel from Paris France
Yu're really Right! What a music and What an incredible POWERFUL VOICE ever! MERCI BEAUCOUP from Paris France. Emmanuel
Well, this what I listen to... With the Internet, anyone can see it.
So true! I remember seeing this when I was seven years old!
Love this great star.
Owned every stage she was ever on. What a cannon... What a charmer.. What a legend!
When I was little my parents would go out on Saturday and my grandma would babysit and make big bowls of buttered popcorn and we would watch Hollywood Palace with her.
Both wonderful. Love the duet of songs together very funny "you weren't even in Philadelphia" ⭐⭐
Only anyone as 'on' as Ethel would have dared to interrupt and mock Fred. But he holds his own. Television had really loosened up the perfectionist control freak. His adaptation to the 'hot' medium, where he is as charmingly relaxed as Como, is one more sign of his unrivaled adaptability: from his first special in 1958 he was as much at home in a TV studio as on a movie sound stage.
She will never be duplicated or replaced.
Allan Cuseo ...and I thought Liza Minnelli was a belter... She couldn't hold a candle to Ethel!
She was and will always be the Queen!
The Best ever in Hollywood people. Who need people like her? Everyone! MERCI BEAUCOUP from Paris France in stereophonic september 2019! Thanks so much for this historical incredible rendition. Emmanuel
Empress! Or as German I should rather call her KAISERIN! 😂
Yes, lol She was a storm of undiluted talent!!!! Broadway was good to her, and she was good to Broadway!
The power of Ethel Merman’s voice is awesome!
Ethel Merman is still the Gold Standard of Broadway musical performers.
The great Merman. And the great Fred Astaire. They don't make them like that anymore!
Savvy gymnastics
Outstanding Loud soundtrack ever! MERCI BEAUCOUP from Paris France ever. September 2019, now I can hear yu! Very outstanding rendering VERSION! MERCI BEAUCOUP! Emmanuel
Well, Astaire had 60 years of theater experience under his belt by then
Very true, all the way back to vaudeville turn with his sister Adele in his childhood.
That's how it's done. There's Ethel and then everyone else. No one could belt like her. Must have been quite the thrill to see her on stage. I was a little young during the 60s to see her. Medley with Fred Astaire also great, another giant with a million hits. Those are one of a kind talents.
Priceless!!! Two of the greatest entertainers of all time!!!!!
LOL.
Dam she aged gracefully especially for that era. Our girl who never needed a microphone...
Richard Rodgers was once asked whether he had any regrets regarding his career. He said he regretted not writing a musical for Ethel Merman.
These were true stars. They did not have to rely on gimmicks or props or indecent clothing or speech. This was talent and glamor that we will never see again.
Total magic! The BEST!!!
Merman died in 1984. We can still enjoy her through her legacy in video performances.
I was born in 84 and adore singers like her :)
1966 and Ethel still looks and sounds fantastic!
Pure class. Amazing. I'm 57 and proud to say that I grew up watching the great stars of TV and screen. There is no one like them anymore.
Same here, same age. Now I understand why my dad( a very manly man) loved these old variety shows so much. Outstanding, wholesome family entertainment.
It’s so sad, I wish it was like years of yesterday where entertainment was clean, and fun and exciting. Not vulgar and filthy like it is today, not to mention the classless people
They were both absolutely great in their individual styles.
Greatest rendering!
There is not a face that Ethel Merman could not put a smile on! God bless her.
Jeff
The greatest voice ever on Broadway! The audience should have been on their feet!
Michael Miller, you said it all about this Hollywood Palace clip. The audience should have risen as soon as she made her entrance! Other female "belters" may have the volume, but nobody had Ethel's voice and stage presence. You are obviously a man of good taste! Dave B
She had such stage presence! Wonderful to watch!
This the real glamour age.
This video is like comfort food to me.
A huge talent. No one else like her. We are so fortunate that this film still exists. It is thrilling. Remember she is part of American Music History.
when stars were stars !
Very true!!
They used to do shows so well back then, so well synchronized and planned.
Merman and Astaire were perfectionists. They would have tolerated no less.
Everything I hoped for when I saw this listed.
Wow Ethel! You really blew them away. God bless you.
Ethel freakin DELIVERS.
Two all-time greats, each one in a million! Wonderful memories forever captured in picture and sound. Brilliant!!!
Fred, like Judy (I know she's not here) had been on stage since he was 6 or 7 years old. There's no substitute for that kind of experience.
What a belter!
She reached the second balcony.
Wonderful! Thanks for the memories of a Super Performer, the Great Ethel Merman....👍
Thanks so much for this! The first Pop star belter. People don't realize. And the natural charm, And how great that She had such a great sense of humor about herself!
Her voice will never be equaled again!
I was watching some other great stars sing SOME PEOPLE tonight - and then I had to come back to the one and only original. How I treasure Ethel Merman's art - and as Fred Astaire says, her "terrific style".
Talk about knocking it out of the ball park! WOW!!!
She's the best!
7:10...lol. putting on the RIIIIIIITTTTZZZ!!!! hilarious! Miss her.
Wow. That was jaw-dropping. Thanks for posting this.
Hollywood Palace had great sound and a great stage, great lighting.
You hear these songs and this type of singing that is legendary. From shows that made Broadway what it is. Those times are gone. Then you get invited to see stuff like cats or the lion king or the Little Mermaid and the only thing you can say is "I'll Pass"... If you have ever seen the original show Gypsy you would be floored! Gypsy, Mame, Carousel, West Side Story, La Cage Aux Folles, Chicago and on and on.. Those were the shows that made broadway famous!
This is wonderful beyond words....but "Goose Bumps" comes close!
I absolutely love this.. so many memories of sitting in the living room with my family watching the finest variety show ever. Ethel Merman and Fred Astaire no topping that !! Thank you for posting this gem.
Same here Alan!
Same here.
Hollywood Palace - its theatre was- beloved by the big stars for its marvelous acoustics. Its like Broadway.
Judy Garland revived playing at The Palace.
This is just spectacular. God, why didn't these two ever do a movie (directed by Vincente Minnelli)? So we should be so grateful for this clip. Merman and Astaire are as different as night and day, but as they sing, "We got our songs./ Who could ask for anything more?"
Her movie career was brief because she couldn't act and was very unnatural on camera. Her voice was loud and that is lost on film.
I loved her in: “Call Me Madam.” Her acting was just right for her role in that movie, probably because she seemed to be playing herself! ❤️Lol !
She had one of the most unique voices of all time. Not particularly my favourite but still reminds me of better days
my dad saw Ethel in the original Broadway musical. No mic of any kind. He said it was incredible
Ethel Merman owns "Some People" Many others have given good attempts, but they over do it! Ethel just lets it flow. She makes Rose's character come alive; she's believable. In my opinion Ethel is the Queen of Broadway.
It's not your opinion it's facts 😂😂
Long live the Queen!
My God, she looks and sounds FANTASTIC! Love that hairstyle for her and the dress is very tasteful and flattering.
Wow. What a perfect entrance for a terrific - and extremely hard-working - star! "Some People" is a great song, and the tangential mash up/musical aside featuring another big musical hit, People, is an odd surprise. Then Fred and Ethel perform their musical medley + humorous banter sublimely... THANK YOU for sharing on RUclips.
I miss these days. Thanks for sharing this!
THIS IS GREAT!!!!! LUV THIS!!! THIS PUT ME IN A GREAT MOOD!
I first saw this clip embedded in the full episode of this Hollywood palace and I would have to skip over all the other performers to get to this part. Thank you for making it a clip of its own and putting it on RUclips. That was a golden age and I admit that I didn't appreciate it at the time. I thought that talent would always will out and I never foresaw that we would live for almost two generations now where there is no talent, no entertainment, and very few highlights that we would look back on with amazement as we do with clips like this. PS: I love the last five seconds when Fred Astaire signing off and Ethel gives her two cents.
My sentiments exactly.
They are the 2 greatest people ever! BRAVO for this incredible rendition! MERCI BEAUCOUP from Paris France. Emmanuel
Five minutes ago I was sleepy now I’m wide awake. Love you Ethel 🎉❤
It was so wonderful to see these two wonderful performers...the is no talent today who can even come close to these showbiz icons, Thank You for posting this Fabulous video..I look forward to seeing more like this.😁
Like Cab Calloway, a great set of pipes that lasted a long, long time. At the time this was shot, she had been belting it out for about 35 years. Terrific clip; Thanks for posting!
Ethel killed a lot of songs.
And if an audience didn’t clap loud and long enough, she would continue.
A horse and a cricket. Great combo.
Namaste and care,
mhikl
No autotuning required.
Pure magic
Fantastic!
It's The Mertzes! Oh....wait...Wrong Fred and Ethel! This was wonderful!
^^X^^
I was already smiling from the entertainment, but thanks for the time appropriate joke. Love that she could make fun of herself. She was the first Mama in Gypsy. See clip of Gypsy Rose Lee interviewing her and filming a rehearsal. Bette Midler - was she influenced by Merman? And I know Midler was influenced by Sophie Tucker. Wonder if there is film of Sophie Tucker?
Vivian Vance (Ethel Mertz) understudied Ethel Merman in a couple of shows on Broadway in the 1930s...
Superb
fantastic !
Wonderful!
She is letting Barbra know how it is done.
True
Barbra never equaled this.
Nobody launched more songbook standards on screen than Fred Astaire, and nobody launched more on stage than Ethel Merman. Irving Berlin, America's greatest songwriter, would rather they debuted his work than anyone, which is why his hits loom large in this selection.
How extraordinary that more than 40 years after Fred choreographed Ethel's hit 'Girl Crazy' they should be in fine voice together in a medium unknown when they became stars.
Ethel was too 'big' for movies; Fred never went back to Broadway. TV finally reunited them. Each had only to sing a couple of notes to be recognized.
What a classy series 'Hollywood Palace' was. It continued, as Ed Sullivan did, the habit of mashing up high and low culture inherited from revues such as Ziegfeld's and Cochran's. You might get an excerpt from the latest stage hit, some slapstick, a ballet pas de deux, dancing bears... anything entertaining, often hot off the press.
All that has gone. Now television has amateurs, or pros doing things they could not get paid for.
Don't forget Bing.
Wonderful!!! Thanks for sharing.... 👍
Every song in this medley was originally introduced by one of them. Porter Gershwin Berlin-with a single Styne for EM.
Fabulous.
Class and classET. By the time I got to the Hollywood Palace building (where this was filmed) it was a dance club
This will be so awesome I am afraid to watch it alone
One of the greatest vocalists of 2oth century
some people are stars....Ethel Merman is the whole fucking constellation!
I love this!
Ethel y Fred unicos divinos inmortales la gracia del goce de la actuacion maravillosa
Each one in their own style, voice and charm. Perfect.
Love her
I've always been fascinated by Ethel Merman in every performance I can view. She was always well styled, but she always had a "thing" for the 'big hair look" even in her older years.
She didn’t have “big” hair in the 1930’s.
THE BEST.
Lovely
The Queen reigns.
She belts it out and puts Lisa Minnelli to shame...she is the "real deal". They don't make talent like this anymore! John K.
this was so awesome ethel merman is one of the greatest singers of all time i lover her!!!!
"Why don't you aim for the 2nd row?" Bahahahhaha!
I miss them!
People forget that Fred was a successful stage performer from 1917- 1933 on Broadway before RKO 'discovered' him. He was in Jerome Kern vehicle, three Gershwin musicals including Lady, Be Good, and Funny Face and Cole Porter's The Gay Divorcee before he played the title role with Rogers in the RKO film. He must have been able to be heard under the same circumstances as Ethel was, because there weren't more microphones on his stages than hers in 1930 for Girl Crazy, in 1934 for Anything Goes, and the other Cole Porter vehicles in the late 30's and audiences are not in the habit of paying for seats and not screaming bloody murder if they can't hear the songs.
Or, that he was the first to be brought out to Hollywood as a bona fide "star" before he got there.
Sylvester's mama.
Yessssss!!!!!!!! Lol!!!
David Benson, Thanks so much for this nostalgic clip. As an older Baby Boomer, I grew up with this show and my parents and I would never miss a show. Should you find any other clips such as this, please upload them!!! Thanks again!!!!! Dave B
Got to love the Merm!
-- WOW.!!!!!!!
Thanx for this. Nevet had a chance to o the Broadway...
Dos grandes voces y estilos gente que cantaba realmente.
Delightful....delicious!!!!!
What a treat two of the greatest song and dance performers ever to grace a stage loved it ♥️
Loved them ❤️💞💗
Look up "star" in the encyclopedia and the first and only definition will be ETHEL MERMAN!!
I wonder if this is the only audiovisual recording of Ethel doing "Some People."
Saturday night was Hollywood Palace and Sunday night was Ed Sullivan. As the Merm once sang, Who could ask for anything more?
People and Some People were both Jule Syne tunes (with different lyricists).
Ethel Merman is the Phoenix Force of musical theatre
