"I Get A Kick Out Of You" by Cole Porter.
Performed by Ethel Merman in the 1936 Paramount film, "Anything Goes".
Ethel Merman plays Reno Sweeney, who sings her song of unrequited love to Billy Crocker (Bing Crosby), whose eye is concurrently and ironically caught by Hope Harcourt (Ida Lupino).
"Anything Goes" was one of the only two films in which Ethel Merman reprised her Broadway role, the other being "Call Me Madam" (1953). Merman left the Broadway production in 1935 to work on the film.
Paramount had to censor the lyrics "Some get a kick from cocaine" to "Some like that perfume from Spain".

The coke line is still in there. Buts it’s only clear to those who know the reference. Back in the 30s one of the most popular perfumes in Spain was one that was named
“cocaina en flor” which loosely translates in cocaine in flower form.

Ethel's friend and colleague Carol Channing described Ethel this way: unparalleled as a live performer, but her gifts didn't come through on film, "like sunshine through a glass window, no warmth, no vitamins." That was from her book... of course, I don't have it verbatim.

What must Merman have thought of the way they filmed this number? They make her brilliant interpretation a mere background for the dramatic action involving Bing Crosby. Reno becomes just a sideshow for the other characters.

I was confused by that as well. Although most of the attention was on her, I've seen worse, but they weren't treating her as the star of the show. Vocally I think she's superb. She still has a honey-like sound in her breathy like register that was less pronounced as she age and all of the heavy belting. Especially in the introductory verse. Her voice at this point also seems mostly vibrato free, which I love. I love the trademark grace note she does on the word "me" at around 2:15. The recorded versions she did of this song here and before are my fave versions of this song. Thank you, Mr. Porter, for writing this with La La La La Merm in mind.
