Ethel off stage was as much of a character as she was on stage and very joyously so. She had many sides to her. Treated her parents as royalty, for many years worked at a hospital gift shop as a volunteer (the people there adored her), had many pals including the person who was supposed to be her biggest competition, Mary Martin. Wonderful to her fans. But could be hellish to work with. I think the bottom line is she lived life to its fullest at full speed and that was that.

Yes, Perry Como was most alluring. For some reason, he seems particularly so here.

What I find surprising is how pretty Ethyl was. And this is one time when she doesn't always go overboard. She did have a good voice. I'd like to hear more of her quieter take on some songs.

The way Merman sings the beginning of the song is incredibly charming... not a word usually associated with her vocalism, but here...!

What talented entertainers we had in the past.
    All this absolutely live.
I get a kick of watching these wonderful clips of legends of yesteryear.
Hoping they're in heaven singing their hearts out!
    Thanks for sharing.

My mom’s lady friend worked in an office of broadway agents and lawyers for years . She met many many big stars. She always said Ethel Merman was always the nicest and friendliest . She could swear like a longshoreman and told the filthiest jokes.🤣🤣🤣🤣. I remember an interview with Mitzi Gaynor , where she said the exact same thing about her.

Ethel had more talent in her nose then most performers of today or 40 years ago. Even Babs Striesand :)
