I suspect that might have been Ethel adlibbing, since it sounds like the way she talked. I don't think I have heard that phrase on Sesame Street before!
Ethel's agent begged her to get a facelift but she refused so this is what a 70 year old woman looks like. She still had the voice and the personality.
I had the privilege of seeing her in Hello Dolly on Broadway in 1970 the summer I graduated from high school. She was everything I imagined she would be and more. I will never forget the experience.
If ever a song was written for Ethel Merman to perform with that great foghorn of a voice then it's this one. So glad she performed it at least once for posterity.
I never understood peoples fascination with Ethel Merman until I saw this video. The first two verses of her singing this song made me wanna cry. God bless you Ethel.
I have ME/CFS (Systemic Exertion Intolerance Disease) and was literally stuck in bed hoping for more energy so I could get up, and this did the trick! Don’t get infected with CoviD, folks! It’s on the rise yet again with a more immune evasive mutation and if you’ve got an mRNA shot then you’re left with less than nothing after 7 months - clean air and N95s are all we’ve got until the new Novavax in October!
She's always belted out the songs, and they just didn't make 'em like Ethel Merman anymore! RIP Ethel Merman, I know you are beltin' out the songs up in Heaven, and I know I will be there to hear ya!
Other than Judy Garland no one would hold an audience like Ms Merman. Loved her and saw her so many times in person, Loved Imogene Coca -- I was with her for the Tony Awards when she was nominated for On the Twentieth Century.
Oooo… how fantastic, Allan! Absolutely adored Imogene in that. That also one of my absolute favorites. Brilliant brilliant brilliant brilliant brilliant !Heard / saw Madeline Kahn 🏆 and also Judy Kaye 🌟 in it. Beyond brilliant !
OMG what a force of nature! How could you not smile in the company of this woman singing that song into the next century! I don't think I will ever need to hear it again after that! Wonderful.
Imagine being able to perform a song -- not only perfectly - but timelessly. She's just standing on a sound stage with the music on playback -- it's amazing. Probably one take too.
fontenayperi She's not lip synching at all -- there is just the playback of music -- no band or orchestra -- didn't mean to imply that she was lip synching.
*sigh* If only I could have my own personal Ethel to sing for me when I'm feeling down... "Tomorrow" always cheers me up. Also Ethel's rendition of "No Business like Show Business." What an amazing woman!
What a charming setting for this great song. We are so lucky that the great Ethel Merman was given the opportunity to sing this anthem of hope and resilience. I love the sweet direction of the scene. It's so beautiful when Ethel grabs everyone's hand. I'm wondering if Imogene Coca and Leslie Uggams had any other scenes with her.
@@rindenver1194 I saw that in the comments, I was just saying that I'm proud that I share a birthday with Ethel Merman though she was 70 years older than me when I was born.
I thought I had seen seen all the Ethel Merman clips but I'd never seen this one! It was great! But Ethel really look old. So happy to see Imogene Coco. Thanks!
She was great with Tallulah Bankhead on Tallulah's radio Show, "The Big Show" in the early 1950's.ruclips.net/video/FbCz8lq20VU/видео.html And indeed it was the big show lasting a full 90 minutes every Sunday evening. From the many times Ethel Merman was on "The Big Show" with Tallulah Bankhead, they must have been very good friends and worked well off each other in the many skits they performed together. In one skit Ethel Merman plays the mother of Tallulah Bankhead. It has to be one of the funniest skits ever on radio (or television). It was called "What Happened to Fedelia?", and based on the book written by Meredith Willson. The skit also starred Peter Lorre which only added to the magic. This skit is not on video, but on Tallulah Bankhead's radio show, "The Big Show", "The Theater of the Mind"

Ethel was great! She was and remained great all her life! She could lift people out of their seats in the theatre. She also had a wonderful comedic talent. It's too bad she was never given a wonderful sitcom or a successful television series. She was underutilized in the movies, too. She was great in Mad, Mad World and didn't sing a note.
God what I wouldn't give to reach up to heaven and pull her down for a duet with BRIAN BLESSED... you'd hear it clear across the universe... and the world would be better for it.
At 15 secs, Ethel Merman calls her an idiot..lol...b4 political correctness..today they would never use that word on Sesame Street.. hahahaha.. but she sings well for an older woman...wow
I wonder when this Sesame St. episode aired? And, no; we'll NEVER have the likes of Ms. Merman, again!! Just as there will never be another Elvis, or Beatles.
I don't know how I never noticed this before, but she has a habit of adding an "uh' sound to the end of her words. "'Tomorrowuh," "chinnuh," "grayuh," etc.
And..Talk about Show-Biz-legend OVERLOAD on the guest-star credits for this Sesame Street episode, for THAT day!! Ms. Merman, Imogene Coca, AND Leslie Uggams??!!
You sort of have to admire this brassy lady for telling someone that they look like an idiot on a kids show themed Christmas special. Try doing that once in 2023. 1978 was a better time in a lot of ways, before the end of the innocence with the Internet
OMG never saw this one. Is the entire episode Christmas themed ?? If yes I'd love to get it on Blu-ray or DVD for next Christmas. And did she really say idiot ?? Lastly Happy Birthday Ethel !!
Boy Ms. Ethel Merman. Do you have some balls and some nerves. There is no way they're going to Let Imogene Cocoa back on TV. Are you insane or just nuts?! Love you. Don xoxo (April 9, 2024) Don't you agree Ms. Bonnie Franklin Lucas?
I love how she comes up and casually says you look like a idiot
im in bits laughing
From what I hear that was friendly for Ethel.
I suspect that might have been Ethel adlibbing, since it sounds like the way she talked. I don't think I have heard that phrase on Sesame Street before!
Ethel's agent begged her to get a facelift but she refused so this is what a 70 year old woman looks like. She still had the voice and the personality.
filmmekker She looked great! Sounded even better!!
Her voice sounded the same from when she was 21 to when she died, which is inhuman!
Just coz she's was 70 dosent mean she wasn't still beautiful. 🙂
She still looked great ! No need for a facelift
Ethel Merman remains a force of nature!
"Ya gotta do what Ethel does - outlast them!" - Yes!
This is strangely moving.
Never underestimate the power of showtunes to solve all your problems.
Damn right.
Dats a fact
That's right Ethel... show em all how it's done old school!
It think that was the first -- and last -- time the word "idiot" was ever spoken on the set of Sesame Street. Only Ethel could get away with it.
That's because she wasn't around when Elmo kept laughing way past the time when it was tolerable! LOL!
And "Merry Christmas"!
I was thinking the same thing!!😂 She's been hangin' around Oscar's trash can too long😂😂
One of my biggest regrets is never having seen Ethel Merman perform live...
I did in hello dolly
I had the privilege of seeing her in Hello Dolly on Broadway in 1970 the summer I graduated from high school. She was everything I imagined she would be and more. I will never forget the experience.
The one and only Ethel Merman! They just don't make 'em like her anymore. RIP, Ethel, you're sorely missed!
If ever a song was written for Ethel Merman to perform with that great foghorn of a voice then it's this one. So glad she performed it at least once for posterity.
Foghorn is a great description for her voice!
That's The Merm, she could sing anything. No one else in the world like her, she was great on ANY song.
I love this! My new motto: You gotta do what Ethel does!
I never understood peoples fascination with Ethel Merman until I saw this video. The first two verses of her singing this song made me wanna cry. God bless you Ethel.
You should see her in Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad World. She's hilarious. What a dame!😂😂😂😂
This song itself gives me great energy, and Ethel's voice cheers me up. Thanks a lot.

absolutely riveting, one of the greatest stage performers in history
Just realized that they are Leslie Uggams and Imogene Coca.
God bless her memory -- still a joy to hear!

Agreed.

I wouldn't go that far!
She was one of a kind and a great singer and personality, we will never see anyone like her again.
Love her! Still the gold standard ✨️
Amazing outstanding by the legend Ethel - performance has given me a huge boost 👍🙏✔️ thank Ethel 🙏🙏 God bless you 👍
Broadway ROYALTY.

Yes they all (humans and Big Bird and Oscar) sang a medley of holiday songs at the end!
What a beautiful voice and personality.
and THAT kiddies is how it's REALLY done!
I love the Merm! Ethel just kept going and going and going!
The Wonderful Ethel Mermon! Inspired!🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Ethel Merman embodies the nature of an elementary theater and music teacher that can actually sing✨️
A true leagend! Rest in peace. Ethel Merman
You can't keep The Merm down...
Yep, she looks old. She was 70 and unlike so many stars who stay young looking by having plastic surgery she chose to look natural. Good for her.
Better that than the frozen botox faces all the TV anchors and actresses have now
I am proud to say that I share a birthday with Ethel Merman (I was born 70 years later in 1978).
This television special was filmed in 1978.

Maybe it's my own age talking, but somehow this song moves me more now when sung by a tough old lady.

1978. Yes, she was both!
After watching this I can't help but wonder if she ever played Miss Hannigan. It seems like such a natural fit.
She did not. But she would been perfect!

It was criminal that she wasn’t cast as Rose in the movie version of Gypsy. Rosalind Russell was horrible.
OMG. Vocal genius. A Goddess. She defies reason. GENIUS.

I agree! And I'm not one to want to bring people back from the dead... but Ethel!!!! Please, Just don't use the PET SEMATARY for the ressurection!!
As Robin Williams (may he rest in peace) taught us in *Aladdin,* we can't bring people back from the dead. It's not a pretty picture.
Such a wonderful uplifting song 🙏
In 2021, Ethel is still a tonic for the troops.
Rip Ethel Merman January 16 1906 Died February 15 1984
Most sources say she was born in 1909, while she claimed 1912...
Randy Sills It was 1908.
At 15 secs, Ethel Merman calls her an idiot..lol...b4 political correctness..today they would never use that word on Sesame Street.. hahahaha.. but she sings well for an older woman...wow
They didn't use it in those days either. I suspect Ethel adlibbed that one because it sounds like the way she talked.
No one chews like her and Vincent Price and I mean that in a good way.
ethel merman is a God
I needed this.
Just love it!!
Only Patti Labelle and Ethel Merman have that type of talent ever vocally profound!!!!! excellence!!!!!!

She would have been an incredible Miss Hannigan.
She would have made a great Mrs. Hannihan.

Yes! That sounds a lot more like Ethel than how they usually talked on Sesame Street!
