The homeowners of Rolling Hills demand answers as to why the hills are rolling
Civil engineers are supposed to check the land and certify that it is safe to build homes there. This is not CHINA or INDIA where there is rampant un regulated housing construction. We have rules and regulations and GUESS WHAT? We also pay tons of taxes to state and local government officials and agencies to police this sort of stuff.

Who would think after building a house on unstable ground that the house would also be unstable.
The entire moutain of Palos Verdes is made of volcanic mud clay which dissolved with rain water. It's happened plenty of times before. It's Sunken City 9.0!!!

Maybe it's called rolling hills for a reason ?
Pretty gross comment tbh.
@@teeroy7973oh get down off your pedestal and come join real people…
When I lived in So Cal I looked at buying a house in that area. But it is known for landslides. Everyone there knows this. My realtor and I talked about this issue. Houses there have cracks and they knew this when they bought. I knew it when I looked at buying there and decided not to. So home owners should not be "Shocked"
There were laws against building homes up so high in an unstable area, but gradually, the laws were changed and homes are perched there because they absolutely had to have the view.
That's what you get for living on the edge.
😂😂😂😂😂 this comment took me out
Community wants answers, the hill has yet to respond.
Its no secret in the L A. area that various areas of the Palos Verdes Peninsula has been shifting & sliding for decades. Over the years many homes have been damaged, lost, whole areas collapsed into the sea, and roads realigned & rebuilt every few years.
Which is why it's interesting to hear the residents being perplexed as to why this is happening.
Geologists warned about this 100 years ago to LA politicians but the real estate lobby.
Could just build on floodplains - then the land won’t slide out from under you. Rain however becomes more of a problem. Tornado alley has less of both problems, but one needs to respect high winds more… each place in the world has it’s unique challenges. Still, I’d give living on an unstable hill a hard pass.
I really don’t understand why they’re demanding answers when they know the answers. I mean we all know California is falling to pieces. We’re just waiting for the big earthquake so the rest of it could just fall in the ocean duh. Not trying to be unsympathetic, but that’s really what’s happening and then they keep rebuilding on the same areas that are having these issues. That’s the dumbfounding part I don’t understand like come on people y’all gotta use your brain for something other than a hat rack
Can't feel sorry for the homeowner's stupidity to buy homes right next to a cliff. 2 or 3 million dollars down the drain. Or should I say cliff? Most expensive lesson in geology.
There's a reason why that place was named Rolling Hills
Native American legend says...
Back when they were originally building those places, my own parents said that there was no way that they would live in an area where the land has always known to be shifting. Surprised it took this long.
I have a nice little house in coastal California. ( Not in LA).
It’s on a FLAT piece of land.
It is out of the tsunami zone so it’s not on the beach although I can hike there.
It is a safe distance from the foothills of the mountains, although I have a beautiful view of them,so no slide or fire danger.
It isn’t a dramatic piece of property but it is pretty and relatively safe.
An earthquake could get it but that gets everyone.
We looked at houses in hillside slide zones and beach zones in the area.
Said nope. No way.
We’ve been happy with our choice for these last 30+ years because of multiple natural disasters involving all of the above that have happened in the local area.
Our house is still good.
Greedy developers and corrupt officials have guaranteed that there will be plenty of houses falling down around Los Angeles. There's no realistic means of stabilizing a cliff of loose stone and dirt. This disaster and many more are inevitable and there is little that can be done to prevent it. You got your million dollar view and now you're out a million dollars.
The houses that haven’t sank in that neighborhood I’d be getting a uhaul and working as fast as I could getting my belongings out of there. I wouldn’t dwell on it and stand around I’d just be moving as fast as I can.

The Answer is Landslides are caused by disturbances in the natural stability of a slope. They can accompany heavy rains or follow droughts, earthquakes, or volcanic eruptions. Mudslides develop when water rapidly accumulates in the ground and results in a surge of water-saturated rock, earth, and debris. They are a predictable phenomenon and any one who builds and sells houses knows full well when the area is not safe to build on. That information should have been disclosed to the buyers. How to stay safe when you chose a spot to build is one of the 1st things you learn in scouts.
HOA not doing it's job? Shocker.

An HOA that's avoiding bringing anyone in to figure it out? How much you wanna bet they not only knew it was going to happen but have been hiding the cause because they were responsible. Installing a water main where the corp of engineers told them not to or something similar.
