And insurance companies should be required to make sure homeowners in situations like this know that they need other insurances to cover the home. Having said this, there's a certain amount of responsibility that we need to take. If you live near a volcano you'll probably need special coverage. The ocean, flood insurance. A fault line, earth shaker coverage. Common sense people.

We can't cover you because it has to be Friday the 13th, a black cat has to walk in front of your home and Jason has to take his mask off before midnight.
I once had FULL coverage on my new truck. Was hit head on by a drunk driver. The other driver limped into Mexico. I was not covered by (loophole) Uninsured drivers insurance, so State Farm did not pay any medical bills, Paid the dealer what was left on my payments (2 yrs.) The company I worked for, DOD contractor, cut my insurance. No ambulance chancing lawyers (tv ads) would take the case. Claiming DOD had deep pockets. Thinking your fully covered gives a FALSE sense of security when the insurance company can come up with bull shit excuses. There is no law to stop these criminal enterprises when they fail to pay. The insurance industry has EVERY Republican and Democrat by the balls in donations to keep Americans from being covered in all situations. Loopholes called donations. Nothing changes criminal insurance companies continue to make excuses..

The easy comment is, "you got to be crazy to build/buy on the hill side in California". I was born and raised in California, and two things I learned were: "what goes up, slides down" and "everything is living in a tinderbox in the summer".
Been like this since forever out there.
I don't know how much a DIC rider was going to cost per year. The "smart play" would have been to bank the "excessive" rider premium every year... a flavor of self-insurance.
In other words he should have been putting 10% his home value in the bank every year. If he didn't have it, "you can't play".
I don't like insurance companies. They screw me hard with auto insurance where I live. I flip them every three years now.
I do not want my Insurance companies doing business in these "high risk" conditions.
Why should my home insurance company support "hillside happiness" when most people can't afford the entry fee to get there?

Could he/they go after the approving agencies, the developer, the engineers, and anyone involved who knew, or should have known about the land movement potential? I told a professional association over twenty years ago that all structural fills were failures waiting to happen. There was no cheering. I SUSPECT, but do not know, how much, if any, fill was involved in this case. Public records should tell the tale.

The developer, engineer and contractors are in deep sh.t. the owners will go after them. May god have mercy of them if they find out faulty geotechnical engineering studies and/or insuficient engineering, design, and construction measure to prvent the landslided. An idiot will know that any structure built on slopes require lots of careful studies, planning and specualty costruction

Everyone with a pulse knows the peninsula is a landlside zone. Just south east of this neighborhood there are literal acres and acres that are not considered bulidable because of previous landslides. There are folks still trying to sell land there (and for outrageous prices) with an itty bitty disclaimer to do your due diligence before the sale.

Insurance companies dont really have enough money to cover all their customers so they have to make sure everything is not covered from the start. Life is a gamble but a business doesnt want to gamble with their business. I wish everyday that we could live better but everybody doesnt work together enough to change things for the better. Maybe AI can help us with this. Humans are too insecure. The wealthy insurance companies feel so strongly about maintaining wealth or increasing it that they compartmentalize us into groups of things or even animals they dont like. An insurance company shouldnt say "we cant help you after all these years because your pen didnt predict what you needed help with, maybe you shouldve prayed for a fire since you did mark that down". Seeing this as a real thing is absolute proof of the peril we live through when we trust eachother to run a society. We were the future once. Now we will fight eachother more ruthlessly than ever to provide happiness to our families in an AI assisted world....where there is no assurance. Free learning for the AI and massive college debt for the humans.

To say that there was not a problem when he bought the house so he did not feel the need for the insurance, well most people who have had homes destroyed by fire never saw a problem either, but bought insurance just in case.
