Last time I was at the junk yard I found 2 vise grips. Vise grip brand even. They were rusty but worked. I evaporusted and oiled them and now they are in my bag too. Funny thing is I was keeping my eyes out for a used vise grip at garage sales hah

Excellent video. The only thing I’d add is a small telescoping magnet for retrieving dropped tools, etc. minimal size & weight but handy when/if needed.

2nd time I've rewatched this video, keep coming back to it for useful tips. A very well thought out kit and well put together. junk yards save me all the time with my old car, constantly needed parts to rebuild. I'll have to put a kit together myself just for lobbying around . Ill make sure I carry a hacksaw too, amount of times you can get something just by hacking it off, saves so much more time

I carry not a whole set but 2 of the most common plastic trim and door panel tools. I can use them on doors dash switches so on. Also being old and blind reading glasses and a head lamp. I’m going to build a kit dedicated after watching your video. Oh being in the PNW something to lay on. Almost forgot a cheep small magnetic hardware dish. Drop the stuff in and put it in your bag and go. Also find lost stuff on the ground.

It's been a really long time since I've been to a U-Pull (pick-a-part in my neck of the woods)... Got lucky with a well kept Ca XJ, but there are little minor things that have to get replaced and the U-Pull will be the way to go. I'm in the process of getting a bag together. Thanks for taking me back to my High School days when I would go there just about every weekend. Keep up the videos. Great job guys.

I added a 1/2 ratchet by not even taking a hammer and just using the wera koloss hammer ratchet. I found club style hammers a bit overkill when you dont always have the space to get enough force behind it so the koloss is the right size for me. plus they can have rubber pads over the face if you want a bootleg mallet. some other small things I carry are trim/panel remover, mini picks and hooks, diag cutter, bent needle nose and magnetic pen light.

I take my electric tools, a small craftsman socket set, 1/2” breaker bar and ratchet and common size half inch sockets, screw drivers, torx bits, pry bar, and a hammer. If I can’t get it off with those tools I don’t need it
My favorite junkyards tool is my Milwaukee 2564-20 with wobble extensions paired with cheap kobalt metics sockets 6-19mm shallow and deep. Paired with Capri extended reach double box wrenches. That will get 90% of it apart without busting a knuckle.

I would add some trim tools to remove push pins for inner fenders or bumpers. Tip on removing your part from your car first is great, because you might break something else while you are removing it. You can then get that part also. Thanks for the video.

very nice and comprehensive video, thank you for posting it. I especially like the use of the socket bag and tool roll and will be adopting them into my kit. I generally only take what i know I'll need but always have extra tools in my car so i can always go out and get what i need, my local pick-n-pull gives a stamp on back of hand so you can leave and come back as many times as you need to within that day. the only thing that i didn't see in your kit that i use on a regular basis is a good compact flashlight. cell phone works in a pinch but don't really want to use it when in real greasy or tight situations.

Great video! Love going to new yards and grabbing parts (especially jeeps). Currently carrying around a 320 piece craftsman tool set and looking for ways to downsize when out at the You pulls. I think the bag is the way to go, thanks for the advice!

My favorite punch has been a broken extension I grabbed out of the scrap bin at work over twenty years ago. It broke clean enough I never bothered to grind it. In fact, I found that the jagged edge helped get a better purchase on lock rings. I nicknamed my punch and cold chisel "special factory tool 1 and 2"
For additional tools, I like to carry a 3" c-clamp, bungee strap and wood shims. I've found for Euro & especially Asian cars, they put fasteners in stupid places. Sometimes you can save considerable time and effort by moving or bending another part out of the way for access. The strap helps if you want to just unbolt one or two bolts and hold something out of the way.
Also, if there is a particular tool you tend to forget about, like when propping up a hood with shot shocks with a vise grip. Wrap that tool with brightly colored electrician's tape.
One tool I carry in my pocket constantly is my small Knipex pliers wrench. I keep a medium one in my go bag.

I just recently got a WJ from my father who passed away, and he never got to work on it nor really drive it. So for me this is a lot of good info for things that I need to think about since I want to rebuild (his) my 99 WJ!

I have a set that covers a pretty good range of things and I have that exact same bag to supplement it. I usually try to get a pretty good shopping list together and take a buddy with me and we knock out every thing for upcoming projects in one trip. No matter what I can't take a limited amount of time to go to the junkyard, I almost always make a day of it.

What might be a good alternative to a heavy bag is a large durable suitcase with large wheels which can still have room for parts.

You could probably get a piece of pool foam and cut to fit in the bottom of your bag and cut holes for each of your sockets in order and write the sizes in sharpie underneath the holes. Make your holes small enough so the sockets fit sort of snug. That way your sockets are organized and easy to find. You can also take your foam tray with your sockets out of the bag and under the vehicle with you and leave the other stuff in the bag with your tool bag.

Adjustable wrench is a must for me. Ball joint nuts since my wrench set I have only goes to 18MM in my junkyard bag.

Stanley makes a ratcheting driver like the little red one you had in that bag its inexpensive and pretty durable you can use any hex bit you need.

I have that very same bag. Bought it from Ross. Most of the tools in it are from Ross. Not my best tools. But that bag goes with me whatever vehicle I happen to be driving. And I agree...no cannibalizing from this bag.
I use a roll mat tool holder segregated tools handy little pockets and easy to carry ...long shoulder strap but with added cushion pad for carrying comfort.😂😂😂😂👌👍👊🙌🍻

Get the twist-lock rails by Ames. Come in a variety of sizes and they're durable. Never had a problem with them ever falling off.

i use a military backpack for my yard tools.
@D&E In The Garage why not use 1/2 drive impact adapters for your breaker bar??...they get you out of jams at the junkyard...especially when the clock is running out with closing time looming.
I’d be getting some Knipex cobras and twingrips in there. Easier to use and less damage than vice grips.
I had to add a set of Yaktrax shoe/boot chains to my pick-a-part tool bag for the winter...our yards are a treacherous disaster in the winter when we have snow. I got an extremely nasty cut a couple years ago from trying to catch myself from falling and ended up catching a jagged edge on a grill on a truck...would have been better off falling without trying to catch myself...kind of ruined my whole day at that point. After that I started wearing the boot chains during the winter. Sounds dumb but having a good firm grip while walking around the yards is a very good idea for safety.
I need to rig up a battery to take to the yards for testing electrical items.

I beat on my 96 ZJ enough and paid for it in parts and additional service, I'm over it now LOL. I'll keep my 98 ZJ looking and running good. At some point I'll get an XJ to beat on.

A sawzall blade works perfect with vise grip.small tang on back end of blade fits into groove of visegrip andholds very solid.

What is the brand of your torx holder, also if you dont have speaker wire, fuses work in a pinch
I honestly do not remember. I think it might be Pittsburgh from Harbor Freight. Good call on the fuses!
Something to note whilst it's fresh in my head. In terms of a kit, it's probably better to carry a set of security torx sockets. They double up as normal torx (external) and they have the added option of the internal hole for security torx, so they're a 2-1 socket. Also to save weight, maybe buy a socket with a 10mm hex head, then use some "bits", rather than have full size sockets, just have sets with hexagonal shafts that are interchageanble similar to 1/4" bits. That's what I'd probably do anyway

There's no right and wrong with things you nee.d You buy for the knowledge you have and what you personally want to carry. My tool bag weighs around 35kg, but I just chuck it in the boot and leave it there. I carry the tools I need to help myself, and potentially the tools someone else needs along the road. Adapters are always useful since you might not have that socket or ratchet, but they do but don't have the drivers for it

My lowes doesnt sell sockets or adapters individually so if i need a pc replaced out of the set how does that work? How do they honor the lifetime warranty?
I do not have an answer for that... perhaps you would have to bring the entire set back and replace it? I have not encountered that issue personally.

When I break a Kobalt tool, I go to the customer service desk at my local lowes, present the part, and they give me a new one. Sometimes they check to make sure it is a warranty part or they might have to call a manager, but I have never been turned away

When I first bought a Jeep, I automatically thought they would be imperial. How wrong could I be....... Good thing I have both.
Oh the joys of Chrysler products in the 90's and early 2000's... you better have literally every size from 1/4-7/8 and 6mm-22mm... that is without the Torx set you are going to need
I don't understand why everyone is so upset with Jeep using Torx. They aren't the only manufacturer that has a lot of Torx all over the vehicle. It's superior to Phillips in resisting round out or slippage. If you do round one out it's a pain but it's rare. Ford, and GM also need metric and SAE sets for late 80's to late 90's vehicles as well. Nice thing about the newer vehicles is everything is Metric pretty much. It's actually more annoying to me needing SAE sockets when I run into that on various vehicles with my consolidated kit. I even had people force imperial fasteners to work on imports like the Nissan Hardbody or Toyota Tacoma. Running into that is more upsetting to me than safety Torx, Torx, or Robertson fasteners.

@@DEInTheGarage I here Ya those tow hooks are pick a part Gold. I use Rock Auto. Just ordered a couple of windshield washer pumps. Very easy to pull out in an XJ Winters coming.
