I know nothing about guitar pedals and effects but I always watch these videos, I love John’s playing and you do a perfect job at covering it

- 1957 Fender Stratocaster, John had this guitar refretted, then had the frets removed and the slots epoxied.

- Amp wise, I think he used two Marshall Major stacks.
The BOSS CE-1 was in the repair shop during the recording of BSSM
not all the recording. under the bridge used the ce-1 he also used two jcm800 stacks one super lead one super bass. he also utilized direct input for songs like if you have to ask, i could have lied, and mellowship slinky

@@flukou1106 It doesn't though. The preamp is really important for the sound. For the price of the CE2W, you might as well just go for the PastFX chorus and get the real deal.
Boss just released the BP-1w, a pedal that mimics that circuit! You should check it!
@@lilSchmoob Yeah, but the BP-1w doesn't have chorus. A CE-1w + BP1w is more money than a PastFX Chorus Ensemble
@@NytronX True - but a BP-1w and a CE-2w together are still cheaper than buying a used OG Boss CE-1! :) I already had the CE-2w and it made sense for me to just get the BP-1w. But also, the BP-1w alone is cheaper than the PastFX if you're more interested in the buffer than the chorus effect.
bssm and californication sounds are entirely different, yes a few pedals are shared between the eras, but the tones are very very different.

Yes to dod fx65 for bssm!
Delay time knob can turn down for flangery soul to squeeze sound and up for sweet chorusy UTB/psycho sexy outros. You can see it on the ground in a live video just before recording bssm. I know its a little controversial, fx65 vs ce1 for bssm chorus, but after lots of listening and playing along, im convinced its the fx 65, at least for most of the album. Anyway, great video!!

Hey !! Nice sound. You should try the DOD FX-65! Frusciante used it almost on every song on BSSM to split his 2 heads. (Mesa and marshall)
I thought that's what the CE-1 was for?
MP13 he also uses the ce-1 but he said in an interview that on bssm he used the fx65 to split 2 marshall heads. If you listen to apache rose peacock, you clearly ear the fx65.
"I like to keep things simple. Those MESA/Boogie amps were too hard for me to understand. For most of the basics, I used two Marshalls: a guitar head for edge and a bass head for punch and low end. I split the signal with a DOD stereo chorus pedal."

I get decent bssm clean tones with my CE-2, its like a more crystally ce-1

You can have them set to different settings to complement each other and blend the two for a fuller sound.
Great effort... but for bssm it goes much deeper. Most of these won't really give you the tone. DI, chorus split into 2 amps, etc... are really necessary. Cheers.

you need a dyna comp, a compressor would get you a lot closer
guys here me out, if you listen to the soul to squeeze master track, it doesn't sound like a chorus, it sounds like a flanger, there is a certain metalic sound, that can't come from a chorus. What I theorize is that there is around 4 guitars in the song, and one of them has a flange, making it kind of kind of hard to hear if you're not paying attention. CE1s are a mix of a chorus and a flanger

From this vid, level at 9/10 o clock and drive at 3 o'clock. No idea about tone, think it's at 11 or 10 o clock.
if u turn a zoom u can sse that the tone is around 3 and drive is around 8

Can you explain the order of the pedals and the signal chain?
Luke Byrne i think i can do that. Fuck the compressor, you should be able to do a punchy sound with your attack. Then just put all the drive pedals in order you like cause it doesnt affect the tone that much untill you start stacking them for example if you want to 8bit ish sound of your fuzz just put it behind distortion (but you gotta have a more volue on that dist than this guy has)... after drives he has phaser, no doubt about this placement.
Then comes WH10 which i consider as a most problematic pedal, cause it has BRUTAL tone loss and when you turn your intensity to 10 (and thats what you want) it boosts volume like nothing else, even if you got ce1 after that. John doesnt use any true bypass boxes or something like that but it really mess up the tone so i strongly recommend to buy a bypass box with volume pot and you would also solve fact that WH10 V1 breaks cause its all plastic and you could just stomp on bypass box to activate that old shit and then just control it. But for Johns signature screaming distorted wah sound you gotta have wah always after your distortion. Than it cries like a little child.
At the end has to be CE1 which is great pedal btw. It steals your tone a bit too but when you turn volume up on low setting you will get that crucial crunch. You want your distorted sound swinging not your swinging tone distorted so its right before amp. Use rather low setting cause high (buffer mode) will mess up your distortion tone. Than just straight to the preamp, no effect loop, pretty straight forward. If you running a stereo setup i prefer to put that detuned signal to a jubilee. Aaand in case you would have CE1, you gotta have pedal with buffer before it, or it would sound weak and you would loose some trebble as well, but just saying.

I personally use it that way and it sounds amazing
don't know if I understand your question, but yes, john only used the DS1 with the gretsch, and he played it through a Fender head, instead of the usual Marshall.
The DS-1 for the gretsch/silverface combo wasn't in the main signal chain, but off to the side. He also had a black russian muff on his main board where the DS-1 is here
Wasn’t the ce-2 kind of like an always on thing in this album? Slower rate to kind of double it and add a weird tape thing is how I’ve used it
Well the CE-1 (big clunky thang) was actually in the repair shop during the making of BSSM. But the crunch preamp circuit which is on the left side of the unit is always on. John used it's preamp through his entire career. Obviously it's chorus is luscious but on on the recording of BSSM John used a D.O.D Stereo Chorus. The crunch preamp of the ce-1 is great, plenty of clones are available for cheap! If we are talking about the Ce-2 that's a similar pedal but it is only chorus.
What I find interesting is that people spend thousands on gear to get JF’s sound, and overlook the cheapest and most important part, actually nailing his playing style. What good is all this gear if your playing is sloppy as hell?
