Minecraft - Tutorial: Water

- Water is a block that often confuses and frustrates Minecraft players because it doesn't always work the way you expect it to. Little by little I have learned the traits of this block, which I'm attempting to share with you in this tutorial.
This tutorial covers a lot of well known things about water. It also covers a few things not many people know or understand. I hope it is useful to you.

I just watched a 28 minute video about water

Water you going to do about it?
oh my god if you watch this video, then watch his recent videos, he has changed so much in the way he commentates. its great seeing him grow c:
Also you can "switch" dungeon spawners on/off by placing a glass ceiling over it and using water to cover the ceiling. Mobs will spawn while the water is on top of the glass, but will not when it's removed. This, of course, will work when the light source above the glass is sufficient (above level 7 I believe) to deactivate the spawner block.
There are tons of moments in Minecraft that make you wonder "how the hell is that working". But a carved pumpkin with a torch in it, under water, fully working, is a head scratcher lol
Thank you! I had somehow created a bizarre whirlpool in some water outside my home and now I understand how to fix it (build up solid blocks underneath the water until it is 1 block deep).
At the end with the boat stopping, you could use pistons to make an adjustable ladder.
I forgot to mention, it also doesn't need a downward stream either. Any water movement in that direction can cause entities to get trapped in the stream.
You were right, I did learn stuff! I didn't know water on top of ice made items move quicker. And even though I knew there was a point at which water didn't scan past for holes or hills, I didn't know that it was 5 blocks. Thanks, Etho!
I really learned a lot from this!
maybe you could do a tutorial on lava, too. I feel, it behaves even stranger then water: when you "bucket it up", it creats those persistent streamblocks, that stay, can not be picked up and need to be destroyed by placing blocks on them.
Sadly I knew everything you talked about in these 30 minutes;
But I love what you did to the start of the EATS road!
great job, but you forgot one thing, water will prefer to go to lava and other water blocks if presented with the option, other than that, i think you got everything
god bless you water tutorial man. you help me under stand why my water in my auto farm not work the way i want it. thank you so much
When you show us the EATS part, there's a little song that plays. It sounds so familiar! What is it?
You can truly control water when pistons release.
thank you so much for the tutorial really helps out with things i dont know about water physics.
Could you by chance make one on 1.0 mob science and specs
Great work. I think this will be a tutorial people will often look up.
7:55 - the porkchop in the background :D
Love your little tricks! Just one "1" example. at 20:00
@seregruin Just think water, but unbelievably slow :P Lava stream blocks will "dry up" after a large period of time.
@RazorWolff You do understand that this was made in the time of the 1.6_x versions, when pistons where a half-cooked mod, and not a part of the game... right?
does not have to be stairs, halfblocks work as well
So I am assuming that the 1.6.6 update fixed the boat floating problems you were having in 1.6.4? I'm glad, Notch needs to stop breaking these things, first he attacks bug boosters for mine carts and then he nerfs water elevators ARGH!
You should do a new tutorial on this including all the changes and your new knowledge!
You can place a torch on a water block to destroy it. Way #4.
This was a nice tutorial video to watch today and have a good day everybody :]
Can you do a tutorial on the boats traveling as fast as minecarts? And I thought water elevators were patched...
@Killerhuehnchen
Does that mean that a thunderstorm at night would kill all grass? or is that not dark enough?
that porkchop was killing me
if there is a block next to a stream going down you swim up slower!
@KuruKuruGuy87 slimes can climb ladders though, so it is possible :)
I was able to fill the area with water. Now I just can't get it to even out.
TIL: Passengers on the Titanic would have clearly survived if they were smart enough to carry enough pork chops.
Am I the first person to reset updated water with remote pistons? Hooray for noiseless traps!
@Scoonezy132 nope! its patched! cant get ice blocks with silk touch anymore!
Water bending with Etho! :O
Too bad you didn't showed flat water item movers(i forgot the real name), where you can let items flow forever in any direction without letting them go down. (if that isn't patched)
The ice!!! Dude thank you!!
Etho you should really make a wheat farm!
watching this now and I noticed how many things I didn't know lol
I went back and watched this video after his 1 mil sub episode :-)
i know this video is old, but now lava up on water just make a stone
It's as if Etho made the game, like he's Notch's son or something....
it goes from easy to understand to ethos understanding of redstone...
Etho = Posiden? 0_o Great video.
24:52 Spaz's raiding tower...
@DraconisFryt i thought it says ohte?... or does that mean god in minecraftian?
Thank you for this tut.
You forgot about something really important... Water = H2O
Now... How about lava?
you should add *fixed to the title because 99% of everything you seid was either fixed, changed or broken (probably fixed in 1.7 1.8 and 1.0 then changed in 1.1 and 1.2 the broken in 1.3
anybody know to get running water instead of still water
Hey etho i think this tutorial deserves a reboot if you're ever up for it 😉. You're such an informative artist and I can imagine the artistic side of you takes the most genuine effort, but the informative side takes the most laborious effort.
@bobafett1299 He also killed a cow, you can see leather at 8:44 lol.
Nice. Spotted a grandayy comment with no replies.
Wow
That's a time capsule if I've ever seen one
@@_Killkor yeh
hey grande
@Killerhuehnchen That's interesting. Thanks for informing! =)
I feel like I should get some kind of certification after watching this.
We'll I'm a pro at minecraft but looking at this,I'm a noob, thanks for showing us this maybe do more like this
You're not a pro at minecraft.
And neither are you air pex
Why would anyone dislike this? I mean..whats wrong about it? It doesn't make any sense
They hate Etho's voice for its sexiness and mic blowouts.
Only Etho can make a 29 minute video on water.
13:11
SKYBLOCK RAGE
14:00
OBJECTION!
Squids cannot hold their breath forever.
:D
Not sure how this got to my recommended but I’ll accept it 😂
how etho has changed since he uploaded this :)
It would've created smoothstone and yes this is a fairly old video so stone wasn't created
This is a great tutorial. Thanks!
Why'd I get recommended this all of a sudden lol
Not me, I scrolled for awhile until I got here. Really need to develop a better redstone scrolling contraption for next time.
Great tutorial man! Very useful information =)
Just a quick amendment to this video though: water will freeze in snowy biomes whether it snows or not - but I'm of the impression that it freezes quicker (or each block has a higher chance of freezing) if it's snowing, though I haven't tested this.
Go to the CC button and click "transcribe audio." Instant hilarity!
Well, I thought I knew everything about water, but I gotta say I learned some tricks here. ^^
Ok! I’m the only one that has commented in 2 years, OK!!!!
not rly
Now i need to find Killerhuehnchen's comment. -_-
oooooohhhhhhh
my recommendations be tweakin
a 28 minute video about Minecraft's water? damn right I'm watching it :D
thats one big ass bucket...
Just wait for Wilson then you will have your head spinning in every direction in how all of the red stone workd
Water buckets haven’t changed even to this day, wow
@herewego92
Well it fucked my hostile mob sorter big time. A crucial portion of it no longer works because entities can't hop out of the water stream anymore. And working around it is near impossible since that portion of the system is what allows me to keep skeletons from shooting me (meaning idle safe) and allows me to have a fully automatic record system as well. If I work around it, it won't be idle safe anymore >:(
Etho
With the new updates already arrived, can I request for you to recreate this video
Even an old minecraft video like this gave me an idea...
I've never understood what was so confusing about the water in Minecraft. Is it just that people expect Minecraft to be like real life or something?
Nice...waitin' for version 2 advanced techniques.
very well done tutorial. there's a lot of crappy tutorials out there. I'm glad someone can do it nice and professional-like
Super helpfull
A lot of outdated information, but most of it is accurate and I definitely learned at least one new thing. Underrated video for its category, should have more views
hope you're trolling, this vid is 5 years old, of course the info is outdated
Save My Grave
I mean, it's a mostly positive review ._.
blarblablarblar I know, but what's the point of saying that the information is outdated if the you know the vid is 5 yo?
Save My Grave
To let other people know if they're unaware about what's changed? The majority of the mechanics haven't changed so I wouldn't be surprised if someone thought everything was the same lol
blarblablarblar oohhh, okay, sorry my bad
@13:10
This is the glitch I've been complaining about. This didn't exist until 1.6 and shouldn't exist imo.
Something I just learned, but noticed you didn't mention... If a source block is above the ground (meaning a stream of water is flowing down) and you place sand/gravel above the source block so it falls through, it does not destroy the source block. However, if you place sand/gravel IN the source block, but it still falls down, the source block will be destroyed.
idk why I am watching this when everytime I go in water in Minecraft my head hurts 😂
is this still relevant today? i find it hard as hell to find good vids that arent old
Now all you people who thinks tutorials should be a notepad text with some crappy music. Think again buddy! This IS the only true way to make tutorials that all can understand. Awesome work! Keep it up Etho!
Actually, now the block underneath the air block that will become a water source block by
having at least 2 other sources around has to be a solid block OR a water SOURCE block.
wen u were talkin about the blocks that can control water u didnt say pistons?Im Guessin this was b4 the update?? GREAT VID BTW! THANX I LEARND ALOT!! this will help me alot!!!
@TheSnufking I sure hope it wont be added, it'd break just about all of his creations.
@BestWT1 Lava is water that can burn things, will burn items, goes slower, gives you drowning damege as soon as you go in, burns you and is found low in the ground.
27:21 If you want to make an elevator to different heights using boats, could you just use pistons? (Extended in the airblock stops the boat, unextended lets it go trough)?
You forgot to say that water used as an elevator will make you slower to climb up with
that dirt block in 27:53 that blocked the boat. OK, this is self-explanatory but forgettable, I guess.
Plus, with those technologies you show, I think you can create an Archimedes' screw witch is a screw that elevates water! Search Archimedes'_screw in Wikipedia. Please try to make this one and Archimedes will be proud of you. Thumbs up for him to see. Sorry for my English and my poor Minecraft knowledge.
I have been frustrated with people, especially those who make ships or pools, without first considering the "Under-toe" effect. that is why i always try to correct people and teach them. However, they respond only in confusion or disinterest. Perhaps i am a perfectionist, but there is nothing more more angering then trying to swim up for air, and dying from the under-toe (also, it looks ugly!)
@hesitation24 Y U NO LIEK ETHOOOOOO
omg thank you so much etho i am new to minecraft :D i think your the best teacher
Wow, and I thought I knew stuff about water, seems there is a lot more to it. ^^
Also, if you want to "breathe" underwater, you can use a bucket to remove a water block temporarily in front of your face, giving you a split second air pocket for you to catch your breath. Then you can empty your bucket into another water block and repeat this process as many times as you want.
So how does it feel to have won at Minecraft, because by making this tutorial you sure did! Too bad it's going to be at the very least incomplete because of the interaction with pistons blocking water. And of course the (seemingly) inevitable changes to numerous other interactions with water... :(
btw, the trees look really nice on the first leg of EATS.
Nice stuff but there are a few things i want to point out:
As far as i can tell, cobble can only be created if they COLLIDE, not touch because i have made lava and water next to each other before.
Also it takes a player 5x longer to destroy a block if they are moving underwater, otherwise it would take them 3x longer to destroy if you were standing still.
