John Candy started doing movies in the mid-70s, but it was his time on the Canadian sketch comedy show SCTV that made him a household name. SCTV had several comedic talents who went on to become big names in the 80s, including Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Martin Short.
Back then I was babysitting on Friday evenings and they had a tiny 12” B&W TV and it was Love Boat, Fantasy Island and SCTV. Candy was hilarious. Harry; the guy with a snake on his face”, Yosh Schmenge, Billy Sol Hurok, Johnny LaRue, Dr. Tongue: 3d house of…😂😂😂 he was great!
One of the funny SCTV bits was JC doing a cable access channel ( like a cable tv version of Yt channels for you kids ) show: blowing stuff up: "We blowed it up REAL good!" 😄
Uncle Buck has always been at the top of my favorite John Candy movies. Another one I highly recommend is the Great Outdoors with the duo of John Candy and Dan Aykroyd.
The year after this movie, Amy Madigan (Buck's girlfriend Chanice) and Gabby Hoffmann (younger niece Maizy) reunited as mother/daughter in Field of Dreams.
@@mcgilj1 Agreed. I just learned recently he's the "most-burned potential host" of SNL: "Candy appeared on Saturday Night Live twice (hosting in 1983) while still appearing on SCTV. According to writer-comedian Bob Odenkirk, Candy was reputedly the 'most-burned potential host' of SNL, in that he was asked to host many times, only for plans to be changed by the SNL staff at the last minute."
John Candy was a great actor who left us way too soon! He was excellent in Uncle Buck. He had a great sense of humor and never failed to deliver the best performance. Uncle Buck was a uncle who knew how to get things done. It is worth viewing again and again!
John Candy was one of the most kind, friendly, just pure decent human beings there ever was. He’s incredibly missed. I recommend all his films. Canadian Bacon is highly underrated, Stripes is great and The Great Outdoors is a lot of fun too.
Because of *John Candy's* passing it's sad watching the end of these movies like *(Uncle Buck) & (Planes Trains & Automobiles)* freeze frame on him at the end

I'd like to think that when Chanice comes over and is at the door, and when Miles 'sees' thugs instead of her, that that was the genesis of Home Alone.

It was John Candy's improv stories that force you to use your imagination were some of his best bits. It's like standup comedy with setup and punch line. It's a method that doesn't get used in film or TV anymore. For example, instead of showing us the dog drinking blue toilet water and the odd discoloration on tge lawn, Candy's brilliant delivery is very effective. Or saying he has a friend in a crime lab that can analyze toothbrushes is another way to get you to use your imagination.

This, summer rental, the great outdoors, nothing but trouble, Brewsters millions, planes trains and auto mobiles. Such great memories watching his movies on family movie night ❤
The persona that John Candy showed in his movies and in the long running SCTV was actually himself, though exaggerated. I met him a few times during different shows and he really was just a super nice guy. He always had time to stop and say hi. The Canadian TV show SCTV began in the mid-1970s and John was a member of the cast from the beginning. His characters were always memorable and lots of fun. From Johnny LaRue to Mayor Tommy Shanks to the salesman with the snake tattoo on his face and so many more. Miss you, John.
As an 80s kid I was weened on John Candy movies. He was, is and always will be a legend. He was of that 80s class of SNL, Aykroyd, Belushi, Murray, Martin etc. Binge his films Jen, heartwarming and always funny
Whenever i order a Chicago dog (hot dog topped w pickle spear, tomato, onion, mustard, sport pepper, sweet relish, and celery salt) that line always runs through my mind...
This is my all time favorite John Candy movie. I’m so glad you got this one under your belt now. It’s such a comfort movie for me. It always puts a smile on my face. Thank you for putting this on your channel. Keep up the good work.
My favourite John Candy film. We lost him far too soon. I remember going into our local newsagent and picking up a newspaper, and the headline was that he had passed away. It really shocked and saddened me. Everyone needs an Uncle Buck in their life. RIP John Candy.
Hey Hey there Jen Murray. Thanks very much for your reaction. One of my favorite movies. Love his car. It looks like the space shuttle taking off! 😂😂 Have a good night.
John Candy's last movie, Wagons East is one of my favorite movies, he actually died during the filming of Wagons East. Another great movie is Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
John Candy’s claim to fame started with Canada’s Second City Television (SCTV). He had a skit called Cooking with Johnny LaRue, which you can find on YT. While he did host SNL, I don’t think he was a regular. John Candy and Tom Hanks worked on two films together: Splash (1984) and Volunteers (1985 ). Speilberg cast him in 1941 (1979) where he worked with John Belushi. He was a favorite of John Hughes and starred in Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) with Steve Martin, and The Great Outdoors (1988) with Dan Akroyd. Other films worth seeing are Stripes (1981), which also starred Bill Murray and fellow SCTV alum, Harold Ramis, Disney’s Cool Runnings (1993), and Canadian Bacon (1995). John Candy was one of those rare gifts of comedy.
Another great John Candy movie... Brewsters Millions. Well, technically, you could call it a Richard Pryor movie, but it's a Candy movie too. It's also a Walter Hill movie, and that's a name every reactor NEEDS to be educated on.
I was a kid in the 80s. You know what I used to think was so cool ?😎. The 50s Really, though , John candy just seemed like such a wonderful character. I sure do miss him
The world is worse off for the loss of John Candy. As a kid I had the biggest crush on Tia, so much so she effected my "type" for the rest of my life. I'm currently in love with a beautiful lady that looks just like her. But looks aren't why I fell in love, just thought I'd add that. I realise now... I'm the Uncle buck of my family
Jen, you must have a crystal ball that works! You keep watching great movies. I saw Uncle Buck with my girlfriend at the theater when it first came out, but rewatching it with you today was a new treat. Keep making great picks!
The final scene always gets me, he was as wonderful of a human being as you would think he was. Having it freeze on him as he's waving goodbye just rips my heart apart every single time I see it. It freezes on him and knowing that he's gone still breaks my heart. His best movie was only the lonely with Ally sheedy from breakfast club and Maureen O'Hara from the quiet man and McClintock. When he found out she had a tiny trailer, he swapped trailers with her. He said she was the star, not him. It's a wonderful little rom-com and I think you would love it. He was also great and planes, trains and automobiles with Steve Martin.
I'm so glad that you liked this, Jen, John Candy was the best. I think that you've done "The Blues Brothers", "Home Alone", "National Lampoon's Vacation", and "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" with him in? Other films of his which I recommend are: "Canadian Conspiracy", "Brewster's Millions", "The Great Outdoors", Two films which he has smaller parts in are: "Little Shop of Horrors", "Spaceballs".
This was one of my favorite movies growing up. Surprised you never saw this Jen. John Candy is a national treasure for America as well as Canada. The clown scene is one of my favorites, but then so is the meeting with the principal. This movie has so many great scenes.
There was a one-season TV based on this movie. Naturally, it didn't have any of the original actors in it. It lasted a total of 22 episodes. I remember at the time it caused a bit of a controversy because the little girl in it used the word "sucks", which was pretty much unheard of back then.
The most underrated John Candy performance is Only The Lonely, with Ally Sheedy (from the Breakfast Club) …it also has Maureen O’Hara (from the original Parent Trap) and Jim Belushi. PLEASE check it out !!❤🙏
Thanks for the video Jen. This is my favorite John Candy movie. You should find some SCTV clips. John Candy was awesome in that show. I suggest watching the Hi-Q sketch, you will see familiar faces in that sketch.
🔔 JEN @ 18:12: Perhaps it was parodying "Richard Thomas, an American actor best known for his leading role as John-Boy Walton in the CBS drama series The Waltons."
John Candy an awesome Canadian and legend. Years ago my brother in law drove him from the Vancouver Airport and said he was very nice. Sucks he's gone. He are some more John Candy movies to watch Cool Runnings, Space balls, Stripes, The Great out doors, Only the Lonely,
My favorite acting scene with John Candy of all is when the two kids and he are in the car about to go to the track. The emotion he shows on his face deciding to go after Tia is really powerful without saying a word.
The breaking the dinner plate bit at 5:34 always cracks me the hell up because he escapes breakage when it falls and then assumes it's unbreakable and breaks it! One thing that gets overlooked is the excellent soundtrack to this movie (something that pretty much all John Hughes movies have). The scene with Buck and the little kid at 17:52 was improvised. That is, the kid was just told to wait there while John Candy did his lines. The reactions from the kid are genuine when he goes off on Mrs Horgarth. We definitely lost one of the greats when John Candy passed away. This and "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" are two of his best, in my opinion.
What other John Candy should we check out?

Same with PT&A. John Hughes knew how to capture Candy's charm and they really feel like tributes now that he's gone.

My favorite John Candy movies are the great outdoors, Splash, and Brewster's millions.
Summer Rental I think was John Candy's first leading film. It's also a classic watch.
John was such a nice guy. He would give the shirt off his back for people. He died so young 😭
Shanice and Maisie also appeared together in 'Field of Dreams' (as Kevin Costner's wife and daughter) which came out in the same year as this film.
"He's cooking our garbage"😂😂😂
John Hughes never won an Academy Award, but he sure gave the world some fun movies. RIP Mr. Hughes and thanks for the laughs.
OMG this is one of the best movies ever! Lost count how many times I have seen it and quoted from it. Mouse & a piece of sheet metal 😅
Hey Hey there Jen Murray. Thanks very much for your reaction. One of my favorite movies. Love his car. It looks like the space shuttle taking off! 😂😂 Have a good night.
One of the all time greats Jen! The film is a classic too 😅 This film is one I make sure to re-watch every year or so. I'm glad you enjoyed it Jen
Auntie Jen's here to make us a giant reaction pancake...
The 50s
Really, though , John candy just seemed like such a wonderful character. I sure do miss him
The 50s was cool as heck, that's why!
Just checking in.
I find it hilarious when he says that the last time he told her he loved her, it was for shocks. His car has no shocks.
Other films of his which I recommend are:
"Canadian Conspiracy",
"Brewster's Millions",
"The Great Outdoors",
Two films which he has smaller parts in are:
"Little Shop of Horrors",
"Spaceballs".
Spaceballs is on my channel!
@@jenmurrayxo I'd forgotten, Jen, my bad. 😄
@@jenmurrayxo Only The Lonely with co-star Maureen O’Hara, who came out of retirement to work with John Candy.
I agree with everything on this list Adam. Although JFK, for a serious role, I think he was brilliant 👏 so good to see you here again!
@@TheBTG88 Another good choice and recommendation.
This was one of my favorite movies growing up. Surprised you never saw this Jen. John Candy is a national treasure for America as well as Canada.
The clown scene is one of my favorites, but then so is the meeting with the principal. This movie has so many great scenes.
You cut my favorite scene, "you should see the toast"! Thanks for the share, as always, had a great time. Cheers!
There was a one-season TV based on this movie. Naturally, it didn't have any of the original actors in it. It lasted a total of 22 episodes. I remember at the time it caused a bit of a controversy because the little girl in it used the word "sucks", which was pretty much unheard of back then.
A couple of Macaulay Culkin movies as a kid are "My Girl (1991)" and "The Good Son (1993)."
Sad Trivia - John Candy was supposed to be one of the original Ghostbusters.
The most underrated John Candy performance is Only The Lonely, with Ally Sheedy (from the Breakfast Club) …it also has Maureen O’Hara (from the original Parent Trap) and Jim Belushi. PLEASE check it out !!❤🙏
I bet you’ll enjoy the movie “Parenthood“ for another comedy involving family dynamics. Directed by Ron Howard, cast is stacked.
'SUMMER RENTAL' starring John Candy is 🔥!! Great movie.
You can't go wrong.
In the late 70's and 80's when I was going to school, most of the buildings were "no smoking allowed" , except for the teacher's lounge .
He are some more John Candy movies to watch Cool Runnings, Space balls, Stripes, The Great out doors,
Only the Lonely,
My favorite acting scene with John Candy of all is when the two kids and he are in the car about to go to the track.
