A movie that has a very similar feel that I highly recommend is "Noises Off", 1992, which is based off a play and is STAGED as a play in three acts: first the rehearsal for the play, then a performance of the play from the view of the audience, and finally as a performance as seen from backstage. It stars Christopher Reeve, John Ritter, Michael Caine, Carol Burnett and Nicollette Sheridan, among others. It's a glorious farce and funny as hell.

Lee Ving is better known for being the frontman (and only remaining original member) of the band FEAR. He started using that name in the late 1960s, when he was playing with blues artists.
Between Tim Curry, Lee Ving, Jane Wiedlin (The Go-Go's) and Michael McKean (Spinal Tap), this movie has bona fide rock star cred. Add Howard Hesseman in there for good measure (an actual rock station DJ in his younger days, as well as playing Dr. Johnny Fever on WKRP). 🤟🎶
@@samzilla1281 To be honest, I had to look it up to make sure. I knew it was at least since the mid-70s (when he started playing with metal bands, before forming FEAR), though, if not further back.
Can't believe this hasn't won a poll sooner, this feels right in your wheelhouse. A murder mystery but whimsical and funny, great music, you've even mentioned loving board games in the past too if I'm not mistaken.
"Tim Curry! Awesome!!!" Tim carries this film on his back. The entire third act is him doing a solo recap of the first two acts, with a manic madcap energy that shows through the sweat on his brow by the finale 🥵 It's a shame Tim has fallen on poor health since his stroke, and we wish him only the best. If you haven't seen Rocky Horror Picture Show, throw it on a musical list. Also, Ridley Scott's Legend, with Tom Cruise - look for the version with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack for my preferred cut. Tim is the best part of both, with captivating and magnetic performances 🤩
As a screenwriter, I have to give complete respect to the writers for the fact that this script allows for three different endings that all are legit and work out.
@mariaghiglieri78 More than three, actually. Only Wadsworth, Yvette, and Mrs Peacock could have killed the cook, and I think only those plus Professor Plum could have killed Mr Boddy. Mr Green and Yvette couldn't have killed the motorist. Anyone could have killed the last three because they were all split up by that point. The only one who couldn't have done it as part of a pair with Yvette was Mr Green, and he could have done it as part of a pair with Wadsworth.
31:42 - NINE YEARS EARLIER... ' MURDER BY DEATH' is a 1976 American comedy mystery film directed by Robert Moore and written by Neil Simon. Stars include Peter Falk, Alec Guinness, Elsa Lanchester, David Niven, Peter Sellers, and Maggie Smith.
I love Jen's reaction to this. I love goofy comedies like this and she clearly gets it. One of the funniest parts is Mr. Green (Michael McKeen) and goofy smile with the cop. "I didn't know it was THAT free." LMAO.
One of the reasons (besides the obvious ones) that the final/third ending is best is because the whole “everybody did it” idea is a very clever homage to the immortal Agatha Christie, her work, and specifically the ending of one of her most famous stories. The idea plays out VERY differently in the original Christie story but the reference is pretty clearly intended in the ending of this movie. I’m purposely not spoiling the Christie story or even naming it in case Jen ever gets around to watching any of the movie adaptation of her books.
Great movie! You should also consider these great murder mysteries: Murder by Death, Murder on the Orient Express, Dial "M" for Murder, and Death on the Nile.
The film rolls out like a play and you seem to be enjoying it. There's a film called 'Noises Off' that takes place as a play and you're watching it from the audience. It's frenetic, very fast paced. I'm pretty sure you'll love it. Madeline Kahn is hysterical in 'Blazing Saddles' another Mel Brooks classic.
@DrummingWriterTrekfan84 , depends on the men. The men I dates didn’t last past 4 months! My wife has lasted nearly nine years… and put a ring on it… just one example. 🤣
If you liked this, you have got to watch "Murder By Death". It is a Neil Simon comedy where everyone invited to dinner is a famous detective. Absolutely hilarious.
When it came out there were 3 endings yes . They were advertised on the Maques as Clue A , or Clue B or Clue C. Another point is How many big game stars in this movie Eileen Brennan was on a big show called Private Benjimine ( it was based off of a movie) Tim- So many movies Rock Horror, Annie, Legend etc. Madeline Kahn- wow Young Frankenstein, History of the world etc. Christopher Loyd- Back to the Future , Roger Rabit, the Addams Family. Michael McKean- Lovern and Shirly , Earth girls are easy, this is Spinal tap, Matin Mull- had a show called Fernwood tonight. Lesley Ann Waren -Victor Victoria ,, Life Stinks, And Jane Wiedlin from the Gogos was the singing telegram girl. Just an amazing cast.
This movie takes place in the 1950's so he was an FBI agent first. He was working undercover in Spinal Tap investigating the mysterious deaths of the drummers.
Love that you had such a blast watching this. One of my favorite comedies and simply a perfect adaptation of something as strange to adapt as a board game. About the tape recording being in being inadmissible in court, it varies from state to state how many parties have to agree to being recorded from both sides or just from one side. If it was set in a two party consent state then everyone would need to agree. California, Florida, and Pennsylvania are two party so if it was set in PA then it wouldn't be admissable.
When I was on Twitter (now X), I followed Michael McKean (Mr Green) I once told him how much I loved this movie. I also said it looked like a fun cast. He replied "Best lunches ever." I've had mad respect for him since.
Miss Scarlett is Leslie Ann Warren she’s been in a lot of movies. Back in the 1960s (or1970) she was in Rogers and Hamersteins “Cinderella “! She was a beautiful Cinderella!!!
Carrie Fisher was originally set to play "Miss Scarlett", however, she ended up going into drug rehab so the role went to Warren. And this was Eileen Brennan's first role since she had recently just left a rehab center.
She was in a movie with Robin Williams and Kurt Russell. She did a role on a series about Witness Protection calles 'In Plain Sight' as the mother of a US Deputy Marshal.
What are you doing? Just checking. Everything fine? Yup, two corpses, everything's fine. This is my all time favorite movie. I've watched it so much I can practically quote it.
For another superb comedy murder mystery, might I recommend the movie " Murder By Death " starring Peter Sellers, David Niven, Maggie Smith, James Coco and Peter Falk.
Another movie from the 70’s is Murder By Death. It stars Peter Sellers, Peter Falk, David Niven, Alec Guiness, and a few others. It’s also a comedy. There are many comedy murder mysteries usually in the 30’s-50’s.
This flick is such quintessentially Jen fare that I'd actually created a false memory of you having already watched and reacted to it years ago 😄 So glad you finally got to make it a reality!
Several years ago, my local Community Little Theater did this play, and at intermission the audience voted on which ending to use. Even the actors didn't know which ending they'd be performing each show.
I grew up watching this movie. I was born in 1985. We watched this on repeat and memorized it word for word. So much fun. I actually understand more of the jokes now that i’m an adult. I still loved it as a kid, though
There actually is a play version a friend of mine was in much. They shuffled up and selected the cards like the game and left them on stage to reveal at the end of the play. The person who drew the cards is the only one who knew and their dialog changes, which reveals to the actors which path was selected.
"Would you be kind enough to wait in the um, in, in the, eh, mm, er, library," is one of my most favourite lines in anything. And, yes, there have been quite a few stage productions of this movie.
The singing telegram girl was played by Jane Wiedlin. Jane is a founding member, rhythm guitarist, and backup vocalist for the Go-Gos. You have seen her previously as Joan of Arc in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
This was by far one of my favorite films to watch as a kid. It is still hilarious. I love the game and I credit this film for getting me interested in older music.
14:43 ~ Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn) also played Lili Von Shtupp in Blazing Saddles "They're always coming and going And going and coming And always too soon"
Mr Boddy was played by Lee Ving, singer of the hardcore band, Fear. Also acted in Streets of Fire. The singing telegram girl was played by Jane wiedlin, guitarist of the band, The Go-Gos. Also starred in Bill and Ted's Excellent adventure as Joan of Arc
"Cluedo, known as Clue in North America, is a murder mystery game for three to six players that was devised in 1943 by British board game designer Anthony E. Pratt. The game was first manufactured by Waddingtons in the United Kingdom in 1949"
Ah my high school days. My best friends played Wadsworth and Colonel Mustard. I got to be the Evangelist/Lead Agent. 7:38 it was, remember this was 1954.
This is such a fun movie. The wordplay from Wadsworth is great. And the reenactment scene. I love his little smile. I can't think of anyone else who could have pulled this off other than Tim Curry. Thanks for watching this and sharing. "I hope it's something at the end that makes sense ..." Well, about that.😂
Clue is a fictionalized version of the board game. It has many features from this game, such as the characters and colors of the pawns, as well as the pawns standing next to each other go beyond the board, so here they also have a problem when they go through the door together. In cinemas, each of the three endings was played randomly so that people would not know which one was true.
A BIG thank you to whoever suggested this movie for Jen to react to! Before *_Scott Pilgrim vs. The World_* came out (and later on *_Deadpool_* ) this was my favorite movie of all time! (Literally watched it hundreds of times!) 😁👍
This made my night. Thank you for doing this reaction. I love this movie. My family had the DVD that randomly play different endings, thus, it never got old. I think another mystery comedy is Murder by Death, but there are some others albeit the ones I can think of are black and white older movies. Arsenic and Old Lace. (A great one for Halloween since it is set at that time.) The Thin Man movies. (There are many of them.) And others, many others that I can't seem to remember at the moment.
Love 'Arsenic & Old Lace'. One of my all time favorites. Great movie that I would Highly recommend For 'Murder by Death' . The movies, &/or characters, she would need to watch/know before watching it re The Thin Man movies. I think there are 6, but just the first, maybe second movies are needed to get/understand the characters Miss Marple & Hercule Poirot. Characters from Agatha Christy Charlie Chan is a fictional Honolulu police detective created by author Earl Derr Biggers for a series of mystery novels. The character is Extreme ethnic misrepresentation Sam Spade, fictional character, the quintessential hard-boiled private detective, the protagonist of a novel (The Maltese Falcon, 1930) and several short stories by Dashiell Hammett.
We used to have a VHS version of Clue. The instructions were given to the players at the beginning of the video by the butler, whose name, by the way, was Didit.
In addition to Young Frankenstein, you've also seen Madeline Kahn (Mrs. White) on this channel in "Blazing Saddles" as Lily Von Shtupp. It's okay if you forgot, as you've watched quite a bit on here since then.🙂
in high school, we did Clue, I auditioned for Miss Scarlet, but everyone said I had to be Yvette (LOL) so I was, & was the understudy for Miss Scarlet, but I got to wear a custom-made $500 maid outfit that was just like in the movie ...wish I could have kept it haha hard to believe everyone hasn't seen this!
I was obsessed with this movie when I was a kid and I'm still obsessed with this movie now that I'm old. I really do believe this movie shaped my sense of humor. Thank you Martin Mull, Madeline Khan, Eileen Brennan, Bill Henderson and Kellye Nakahara.
My most watched genre of RUclips video is Clue reactions. I just love watching people experience my favourite movie for the first time. Especially people who like the board game.
1:15 - "Look at this sexy maid outfit. Imagine actually though, like cleaning in that, like cleaning a bathroom in that outfit." - Well, now I'm imagining SOMEONE cleaning in that outfit. ;) 20:10 - "This is making me want to play the board game so bad. Such a cool board game. Is there like a version of it online that I could play? - Yes, there are various online versions of Clue, both single-player and multiplayer. Some are apps, some are for consoles and computers. Also, in the past, versions of Clue have been released for various retro consoles and computers. I've never played Clue myself. I was always under the impression that you collected actual clues, then I once read a copy of the rules and learned that it was just a process of elimination. I was disappointed. My problem with the multiple endings is that it's impossible for anyone to truly figure it out. No matter how carefully you watch and piece together the events, it's all just a crapshoot whether your guess will be correct or not.
Another favorite of mine. The Singing Telegram Girl was played by Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Go's. She also played Joan of Arc in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
"Murder By Death" (1976) is another comedy whodunnit. It features parodies of many famous literary detectives, such as Poirot, Miss Marple, and others. Like "Clue" it features an all-star cast of the era.
In 1991 Sylvester Stallone made a movie called Oscar that is very much like this one. No murders. More of a who's who? A lot of people all confused and running around. I think you'll like it. Marisa Tomei, possibly first movie, small role. Also Joey Travolta, John's brother. He plays ACE. One of Sylvester Stallone main guys. Tim Curry is in this also. Have you ever seen Johnny Dangerously? It stars Michael Keaton and a cast of characters. It's from 1984. It's the same type of humor but not all running around and confusion. Just dry, bizarre humor. A lot of memorable lines.
A big YES! to both movies. I mention Oscar in a bunch of first time movie reviewers. Glad to see someone else recognize an underrated movie that doesn't get much recognition. It's got that 30's screwball comedy vibe. And of course, Johnny Dangerously was a lot of fun, especially the more you know about 1930's gangster movies.
When this came out, our local mini-mall theatre, which had 4 screens showed the film quite interestingly. Screen 1 showed ending 1, screen 2 was ending 2, screen 3 was ending 3 and screen 4 showed THIS version, showing all three endings. When they RE-released it onto DVD there is now an option to choose endings 1, 2 or 3 PLUS the option to select "random ending" that way, you don't know which ending you're watching until the end. :)
Clue's gimmick in theaters was that a different one of the three ending would be shown each showing. It was change to it's current format for home release. On the DVD releases there's a special feature that claimes to show a random ending but everytime I used it I always got the third ending.
Did you figure out he murders?!

Jen you're the first reactor I've seen get the "Frankly Scarlett I don't give a dam" reference from Gone with the Wind ❤
And I haven't seen Gone with the Wind, I just know the quote 😂
The book is better.
One thing that gets me is that Mr. Boddy was played by an actor using the stage name Lee Ving. And that Professor Plum works for UNO-WHO
Lee Ving is better known for being the frontman (and only remaining original member) of the band FEAR.
@@0okamino I knew that he was the front man for a band, I didn't know that he started using the name that early.
@@samzilla1281 To be honest, I had to look it up to make sure. I knew it was at least since the mid-70s (when he started playing with metal bands, before forming FEAR), though, if not further back.
Lee Ving was also in Streets of Fire.
Can't believe this hasn't won a poll sooner, this feels right in your wheelhouse. A murder mystery but whimsical and funny, great music, you've even mentioned loving board games in the past too if I'm not mistaken.
"Tim Curry! Awesome!!!"
Tim carries this film on his back. The entire third act is him doing a solo recap of the first two acts, with a manic madcap energy that shows through the sweat on his brow by the finale 🥵
It's a shame Tim has fallen on poor health since his stroke, and we wish him only the best.
HARD AGREE. Nobody reacts to Legend, and it’s such a killer film. My parents took me to see this and I was transfixed.
I have to second that nomination for the Tangerine Dream version of legend (which I believe was the US Theatrical Cut).
Tangerine Dream version of Legend is THE BEST. Love, love, love that movie. Tim Curry is amazing, ditto wishing him all the best ❤
I say this with zero exaggeration or irony. Clue is a serious candidate for the greatest movie of all time.
I second!
@@PennyLaneRUclips I third!
MURDER BY DEATH' is a 1976 American comedy mystery film directed by Robert Moore and written by Neil Simon.
Was going to post about Noises Off, also. Seeing one of these two films always makes me think about the other. It has a very strong cast as well.
I’ve always considered Clue and Noises Off sister films! Glad to see I’m not alone!
Oops! I just suggested this for the same reasons in my own comment. Love these two films! 😍

Another point is How many big game stars in this movie
Eileen Brennan was on a big show called Private Benjimine ( it was based off of a movie)
Tim- So many movies Rock Horror, Annie, Legend etc.
Madeline Kahn- wow Young Frankenstein, History of the world etc.
Christopher Loyd- Back to the Future , Roger Rabit, the Addams Family.
Michael McKean- Lovern and Shirly , Earth girls are easy, this is Spinal tap,
Matin Mull- had a show called Fernwood tonight.
Lesley Ann Waren -Victor Victoria ,, Life Stinks,
And Jane Wiedlin from the Gogos was the singing telegram girl.
Just an amazing cast.
Amazing that David St. Hubbins went on to become an FBI agent. That house was like a Hell Hole.
This movie takes place in the 1950's so he was an FBI agent first. He was working undercover in Spinal Tap investigating the mysterious deaths of the drummers.
@@ramonacosta2647 Dammit! I got the timeline wrong! Thanks for correcting me! I wonder if Yvette was an inspiration for Big Bottom...
@@bkeyser Not sure, but I bet Miss Scarlet was smelling the glove.
He was also in Young Doctors in Love, which I don't recall being bad.
The only one who calls it X is the guy who changed the name, so don't worry: you won't confuse anyone.
Miss Scarlett is Leslie Ann Warren she’s been in a lot of movies.
Back in the 1960s (or1970) she was in Rogers and Hamersteins “Cinderella “!
She was a beautiful Cinderella!!!
She's dynamite in this. 🥵
Carrie Fisher was originally set to play "Miss Scarlett", however, she ended up going into drug rehab so the role went to Warren.
And this was Eileen Brennan's first role since she had recently just left a rehab center.
And she was also an IMF member in season 5 of Mission Impossible.
And Victor/ Victoria ( 1982) .
Yep, very similar in many ways. "Murder" bombed in theaters but I always loved it.
Love this movie
Absolutely!
And Truman Capote. Totally underappreciated movie.
She needs to watch a few older movies before watching it or she won't understand who they're spoofing though.
Even the actors didn't know which ending they'd be performing each show.
oh cool
I grew up watching this movie. I was born in 1985. We watched this on repeat and memorized it word for word. So much fun. I actually understand more of the jokes now that i’m an adult. I still loved it as a kid, though
The sheer delight with which you watched this movie was a treat to behold.
There actually is a play version a friend of mine was in much. They shuffled up and selected the cards like the game and left them on stage to reveal at the end of the play. The person who drew the cards is the only one who knew and their dialog changes, which reveals to the actors which path was selected.
thats cool
Reading through the comments, I noticed that nobody mentioned Michael McKeon, famous for playing Lenny on the sitcom Laverne and Shirley.
White (Madeline Kahn) also played Lili Von Shtupp in Blazing Saddles
"They're always coming and going
And going and coming

Clue is one of the most amazing and unique movies of the 1980s! Fantastic story and acting throughout. Perfect adaptation from the source material.

Pratt. The game was first manufactured by Waddingtons in the United Kingdom in 1949"
Man, they missed a trick - should have named Tim Curry's Wadsworth "Waddington" instead.
Cluedo was a much larger game initially. 11 rooms, 10 suspeects, more weapons. I would love to see the original plans.
Madeline was also Lily Vonn Schtuup in Blazing Saddles.
Ah my high school days. My best friends played Wadsworth and Colonel Mustard. I got to be the Evangelist/Lead Agent.
7:38 it was, remember this was 1954.
All star performances by everyone, but especially Tim Curry & Madeline Kahn!
I think my favorite role Madeline Kahn played was Victoria Brisbane in High Anxiety. R.I.P. Martin Mull, what a talent.
A BIG thank you to whoever suggested this movie for Jen to react to! Before *_Scott Pilgrim vs. The World_* came out (and later on *_Deadpool_* ) this was my favorite movie of all time! (Literally watched it hundreds of times!) 😁👍
You made this fun to watch again. You enjoyed all the same parts that I loved as a kid!
11:34 oddly enough, I went to see live play of this and it was hilarious! Even my mother-in-law, who had never seen the movie, had a blast.
(A great one for Halloween since it is set at that time.)
The Thin Man movies. (There are many of them.)
And others, many others that I can't seem to remember at the moment.
Love 'Arsenic & Old Lace'. One of my all time favorites. Great movie that I would Highly recommend
For 'Murder by Death' . The movies, &/or characters, she would need to watch/know before watching it re
The Thin Man movies. I think there are 6, but just the first, maybe second movies are needed to get/understand the characters
Miss Marple & Hercule Poirot. Characters from Agatha Christy
Charlie Chan is a fictional Honolulu police detective created by author Earl Derr Biggers for a series of mystery novels. The character is Extreme ethnic misrepresentation
Sam Spade, fictional character, the quintessential hard-boiled private detective, the protagonist of a novel (The Maltese Falcon, 1930) and several short stories by Dashiell Hammett.
the house set was then re-used as the hotel on the TV show Dynasty, which is hilarious to me
We used to have a VHS version of Clue. The instructions were given to the players at the beginning of the video by the butler, whose name, by the way, was Didit.
Last fall, I played Wadsworth in a local stage production of Clue. It was my favorite game growing up.
Mrs. Peacock played by Eileen Brennan , she’s great!

Mr Green was played by Michael McKean who was also in This is Spinal Tap.
In addition to Young Frankenstein, you've also seen Madeline Kahn (Mrs. White) on this channel in "Blazing Saddles" as Lily Von Shtupp. It's okay if you forgot, as you've watched quite a bit on here since then.🙂

There is a Broadway Musical based on the Clue movie. I saw the tour a couple of months ago. Its FABULOUS!
Speaking of Stage Plays, I would love to see you react to "Noises Off". Its a play within a movie.
Now I can't stop imagining Yvette doing maid stuff in that maid outfit.
I've been doing that for nearly 40 years.
I'm the butler, I buttle. I love that line.
"Mr's white no man in his right mind would be alone with you" I still love that line most.
1:15 - "Look at this sexy maid outfit. Imagine actually though, like cleaning in that, like cleaning a bathroom in that outfit." - Well, now I'm imagining SOMEONE cleaning in that outfit. ;)
20:10 - "This is making me want to play the board game so bad.
So excited for Jen's Clue reaction !!!
Tim Curry is hilarious!
Further good Murder Mystery Spoofs would be "Murder by Death" or "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid".
Yes to both!
