  • Cheap wireless lavalier microphone unboxing test and review - KIMAFUN 2.4G KM-G130-1 Wireless Lapel Microphone
    In this video I'm doing an unboxing of the KIMAFUN KM-G130-1 2.4G wireless lapel microphone, basically a wireless lavalier mic.
    After the unboxing of the mic I then do an extensive test of the mic using my GoPro Hero9 Black with its Media Mod and I then do a review summary.
    Bottom line. I do not recommend this microphone as it failed in 4 important places, tone, distortion, wireless range and also wind distortion. I do not recommend this as a vlogging microphone for the same reasons.
    Even if there are other scenarios where this mic didn't distort, someone with a quiet voice for instances, didn't distort because of wind because you where somewhere with no wind or indoors, and even if it didn't drop out because you where always close and within line of sight, maybe indoors. The mic itself does not sound very good.
    However, if you disagree with my appraisal of this mic and would like to buy one, here's an Amazon link to where you can purchase this microphone:

    Good review. I picked up a cheap wireless mic some time ago. It was similar to that one in that it had a 1/4” plug sticking out the side and it was a bit too sensitive. I think that plug makes it very likely to be damaged.
    I removed the plug and replaced it with a short length of shielded cable and put a 2.2k resistor in series with the mic output.
    It ultimately made a pretty nice mic. I realize most people can’t or won’t want to do that but it was an affordable option for me at the time.
    Have a great day and be safe out there!

      Yes, I do the same myself as well, change capsules etc. and drop the sensitivity with L-pad or in-line resistors. The problem is, I've done a bunch of that stuff in the past and it doesn't really get many views. Plus, those types of videos need time to explain stuff and most viewers really don't appreciate the detail or information, most people just want something quick without too much taxing technical information, even though the subject matter is inherently technical.
      I'll be doing some GoPro mic modifications soon that you may find interesting. In fact, if you look at the GoPro in this video I've modified the vlogging case and put a mic on its front, I'll show that soon.
      Hope you are well.
      Take care,
      Dave.

    Funny thing about the sound, Dave. It almost sounds like it’s been compressed. That with the clipping on the input makes it sound a bit crude. You must have had a few jars because all that liquid actually started to block it at 12 Feet! Also, the receiver looks a bit dodgy to me. How long before leverage wrecks the camera socket? Designers made a whoopsy there as well!

      Alright Ian. I wouldn't have been so harsh on it's tone if it didn't cut out at such a short distance. If it didn't drop out or distort I could have accepted its tone for the price. As we both know, the problem with these things is that you usually do get what you pay for. I think from now on I won't be accepting free stuff that's cheap. I'm not trying to be a snob or anything but it's not worth anyone's time if the end result is a failure of a product's fundamental function. Cheers, Dave.

      It’s difficult with cheap products. Problem is, once in a while, you get a cracker like the Takstar sgc600. Beautiful little mic and dead cheap.
      The distortion is just poor. Without that, it would have been acceptable, but it makes you wonder.... who designs these things? An audio profpduct that distorts, cuts out and has such an awkward shape for connecting to a camera.
      Pretty simple fixes but they still put it out in that state!

    “You get what you pay for” definitely applies here. Out of curiosity, is this the same park you had a “conversation” with the police? And did you ever see those guys again?

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  3 года назад +1

      Yes, Tone, defo get what you pay for. Yes, same park. I’ll be posting that video live soon to see what others think. Merseyside Police have seen the video and said they see no problem with what the officers had done. Cheers, Dave.

    Hi David hope you are well, when I saw everything that came with the Mic all packed in a nice case, I thought this could be a great wireless setup for beginners or as a backup, but then I heard it, to be honest it just sounded nasty, and the range was disappointing. As for plugging it into the camera, what a stupid method just asking to be broken off, better off saving for the Rode wireless go.
    Best wishes stay safe Jon.

    I've just paid £150 for a second hand Rode Rodelink set with a broken lav mic. watching this makes me feel like I've been walloped.

    • @JohnsysChannel
      @JohnsysChannel 3 года назад +1

      The Lav was poor, did you try a different one in it? It might be ok for just using it near a camera, but then it defeats the object of it needing to be wireless.

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  3 года назад

      The lav is permanently attached.
      The Rodelink is awesome, don't worry too much about the lav not working, chances are that you'd probably use a better one with the transmitter anyway. Checkout the videos where I build my own lavs, if you can do a little bit of soldering you can build an amazing lav for about £20/£25.
      I'll be doing some videos soon with some modifications I've done to my GoPros using different capsules. In fact, if you look at the GoPro in this video you can see a mod I've done to the vlogging case that holds a capsule.
      I've also done a bunch of stuff on the RODElink as well.

      @@DavidHarry Yeah I watched one of your videos ages ago where you mentioned building lav mics, didn't see the actual mic video though, think it was mentioned on the video where you were testing the wind shield over on the dark side. Will go and hunt them down now I've got 3 Rode lav's anyway, but I thought I was getting the posh Lavlink mic which screws in, but when it turned up it's just noisy as hell, I tried my normal lavs and they work perfect so I know it's definitely that. I've just got the Rodelink system to try it out, I've only ever used the Sennheiser Radio Mics in the past, which are really decent and also really pricey as you know! I used to do soldering when I worked in the studio years ago, mainly on XLR and Jack leads though. Do you reckon the broken one might be salvageable? At least the capsule?

    • @JohnsysChannel
      @JohnsysChannel 3 года назад +1

      Can't believe the lav is hardwired on that Kimafun. At least if you could throw a half decent mic in it, it might have stood a chance for someone on a budget.

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  3 года назад

      The problem with those Rode lavs is that they are basically sub-miniature, you wont be able to repurpose the capsule it's far to small get at. One of my friends has also complained about noise on one of his, I think it's the Plus. If your talking proper mad noise and not just a constant low level hiss in the background, then yes, it's likely to be proper fucked and I wouldn't know what the fix would be. Saying that, £150 for just the transmitter and receiver is a great price anyway. I've got a RODElink TX and RX on eBay at the moment separate for £100 each. Mine are mint condition and separately packaged but a TX and RX package in any condition for £150 is a great price. You wont find much difference between the RODElink and other 2.4Ghz systems, the main difference with these things is the mic you use. I've used wireless systems of all price ranges including stupid systems for film work, the RODElink is defo worth the money. Don't forget, the RODElink also has attenuation at the TX and gain on the RX, something not all systems have. Here's my RODE microphones playlist there should be some RODElink stuff in there and there'll be stuff in my Prelim videos as well ruclips.net/p/PLleKChtNUwZSQyEXb-BbjGcUYUnlwOGxN
