My process has always been listening to the track and searching for the notes, note by note, pausing the song and then playing along with it over and over. This does result in me playing songs differently than the exactly correct way and I often learn multiple ways to play along in harmony. While not being as technical it has taught me how to quickly find notes and quickly find harmonies.
Same....I spent alot of time particularly as a teenager just trying to figure out how I could make what I was capable of doing technically fit into whatever music I was a fan of. This had a downside in regards to learning with structure but I can in most settings be musically right 95 percent of the time.
@@somasundaramsankaranarayan4592 very true and it lead to a lot of frustration for a long time and for a few years between 14 and now 34 I just thought I sucked and was wasting my time but it has bore fruit long term.
@@shinzontheta Thanks. I was thinking I was wasting time not learning things methodically. I also just like to play things by ear. However I was afraid of playing harmonically by ear. You have given me hope.
these vids are actually inspiring. seeing online guitarist playing perfectly can be demotivation but i love that you show the process behind learning these complex peices
Great video, often guitarists share what they do in their practise routine but to actually see a guitarist I look up to go through the ugly parts of the process and struggle is really helpful and motivating thanks Sophie :)
You are a joy to watch Sophie, and I have a great respect for players like you as I am one of the 90% of people who found out I don't have the focus or dedication it takes to learn. Like Zakk Wylde said " you either have it or you don't". Fortunately you do and I just like watching your guitar playing journey as you become better and better at it. 👍🎸😍
I definitely think listening along and getting the rhythm is an amazing tip. That was when I finally started making progress again from when I got really stuck in the past
Great video to show today's guitarists and other types of musicians a path to learn the instrument. What you do is pretty much how I learned guitar over the years and continue to do so today. Technology has been helpful with making it easier to learn songs as well. I too am not a big tab user and prefer learning by ear. What I have noticed since my early years is if I can hear the song inside my head, hum it, or pseudo-sing the tune, it is much easier for me to get it down on the guitar.
Hey hey Sophie...great practice ethos....precision and commitment ...no rush and bite size pieces ....this relates to everything in life ...thanks for being an inspiration as always ...xx
Another fantastic video! Have gone and picked up a copy of Manuel’s book as well, for sure a great addition to the collection with valuable and importantly inspirational material. Thanks both!
A trick i do is tell myself the worst that can happen is i play it again lol this is really useful. Diversity is so important i'm nowhere near the level I want to be but a lot better than i was 4 years ago getting serious again and still have a whole lifetime yet. 😂 I realised lately i need to change my learning style because my progress on several new songs are very slow, months 😅
When i started learning guitar for the first time back in 2008/2009 i was in school. i was quick in learning stuff. like chords etc. i left school in 2012 - dropped my guitarplaying. because i got no time for it. but then 2020 i picked up a cheap guitar from ebay for like 40€ ish. relearned chords, scales etc. for like 1 year.
Excellent video Sophie, you are a good teacher and the advice you give is always based on your own experience. I've noticed that you have a great ear too. I've never heard of Manuel so I'll check him out.
My nephew does a live tune where the chorus? goes, ..., "more beer". It usually gets the crowd repeating the chorus until at the end they sing " more beer". His reply is "practice".
All great tips! Guitar Pro incorporates all these tactics and steps as well. Just by learning to use the program to its full potential anyone will get better at guitar. I would suggest it for any student on the guitar. Regardless of skill level.
Great insight Sophie to show how much practicing it takes to get to ur skill level. it doesn't fall outta the sky. Can u tell us what sim amp settings u r using for recording into the DAW? TIA
Having grown up in the age before the internet, I developed my ear to learn new music. Tabs were helpful but I really don’t use them. Nowadays I use RUclips to learn chords or phrases quickly. I’ve had a few weeks to learn 20 songs I’ve never heard before when filling in for a gig. Only answer is to get the chord changes and just listen to the track. Ear training is probably one of the best skills you can learn.
Hey thinking about joinning your silver tier on paetreon but since you're across the pond I'm trying to figure out if it would work time wise. Great video definately gave me a moral boost because well I want my guitar playing to improve super fast and you show the real sid of guitar even as a professional
I think one of the really important parts of what Sophie did was changed how something was played to fit what she can physically do. Players with long and spider-like fingers make playing their work really difficult for me. At first I would just not do it because I couldn't physically do it like they do. It took experience to figure out that I had to adapt it to what I could do. Sometimes I just can't play it exact...and that's okay. I'm still aggressively mediocre but it's okay, I enjoy it.
I come from a time where needles had to be exactly and repeatedly placed in a microscopic groove on a record. Try it for yourself. I’d love to see a video of that x
I was told by a teacher that you can play for your ego, and to improve, but I like to combine when I do actually practice, otherwise the pleasure isn't there.
😂 same process I do. Was laffin coz I've just done same thing with Hallowed be thy name - Maiden. 4 fckn hours to learn all the intro. 😂 book sounds good tho. I'd buy it for a butchers.
Have you tried to play Guthrie govan's Solo from Steven Wilson's song drive home or Regret #9 or The watchmaker! Epic solos worth a go! Or Guthrie's Waves! Awesome!
any tips or tricks for my brains? i have been playing guitar few years now, but i just can't concentrate enough to learn to play from notes. i mean not at all. I have this so called "ear" memory, and when i hear a song i just start playing/jamming and learn it. it's annoying that i can't play with notes :d any tips? sorry my bad english.
Thank you so much for checking out my book Sophie ❤ let me know whenever you want to come to a show. Guest list and drinks are on me
Yes! another Manuel who plays guitar!
Definitely gonna pick up a copy!
Wow , this is the best comment ever… I’ve never seen an artist reach out like this

Sophie is always so positive ❤
yeah I'm so used to these RUclips guitarists getting on here and being incredibly negative in every video

Practicing to backing tracks can help as well simulating a metronome, you are an amazing guitarist Sophia!
👍👍👍
Time to start using the metronome. Thanks!

The best struggle in the world is practicing music. Good job 👏🔥🌟

First heard the expression 'sick' to describe something awesome in California years ago. How long has this expression been used in UK?
Great video! Pretty useful information. I’m just too lazy really! Aghhh! LOL!
Good afternoon Sophie it's just sunny

Country accent sophie is a vibe. 😂
Soooo true. I do most of that stuff too and I'm nowhere as good as you. I need to use the metronome...
Man, how I hate the metronome, but I know it is the path to success
So true .. you have to sound bad before you can sound good. ❤😃
