I'm 57 years old and I've been playing guitar since 1987. From a technical perspective, Sophie can play rings around me. The best thing about this montage is the clips that show her playing with a metronome. That's serious practice. Serious practice brings serious results. She starts playing at 9, and by the time she's 21, she's a shredder. Sophie, you are very talented, but what this video demonstrates most is the effort. Simply: The practice. You're an amazing player, and you obviously worked very hard to get there. Well deserved!

    • @chrisking6695
      @chrisking6695 3 года назад +6

She isn't talented she's hard working and you're not. You wasted decades noodling around like most instead of targeting goals and working towards them with a metronome and now you pretend everyone who is better than you is more talented or whatever.

I was also 9 when I started playing guitar then piano at 11. Now at 65 I totally suck after putting them down. I blame long work hours and raising a daughter by myself. You’ve inspired me to pick it up again. Played every so often and still know my chords but finger tips have gone soft.

I'm only 27 but took a 5+ year break because of work. Got sick, had surgery, and been at home for a year so I picked it back up. The first few weeks were a grind, and my fingers even bled a little, but it was the best decision I've made since I've been off

Git it back...we can. I'm 72 and lost it thru developing essential tremors in my left hand. Now am determined to restore some of what I had thru diciplined scale work with the metronome. It can be done. This lady is complete inspiration.

I started playing guitar 3 years ago at 37 and when I see people like Sophie and (you) JJ play some hard rock it makes me feel kind of discoraged and useless. No matter how quickly I improve and how much I feel like I'll never be good enough with my guitar playing. I wrote 3 crappy riffs so far not too many views on them and I am not sure what I can do to play faster and sound better. Finger tapping just seems to take me longer than usual to learn properly. I am thinking of switching from my first ever Gio Ibanez guitar to a Epiphone Les Paul in near future. Both of you are amazing guitar players and I give huge props to both of you.

Anyone who is a seasoned player can pick up just how fast her progress was. Where she was at 15 (6 years of playing) would take the majority or similarly skilled players 15-20 years or more, even putting in daily hours. Many won’t even get to that level in their lifetimes, in fact. And yet she was just getting started.

@Morbid Angel is better than Death you know all your doing is proving your missing the point right? Shredding is a skill and a really tough one nobody said it was all you have to do to be good but its a nice skill to have.
Style over substance is the dumbest argument to make in an entirely subjective artform like music, if you can't appreciate alittle shred here and there then that's your problem but now your trying to make it other peoples problem by telling them what they should or shouldn't do. Your not the god of taste and your opinion is not the only valid one here.

Another important part of your journey is the diversity in the music you play. It's important to not just focus on the genre you want to be in but also try other genres. You'll learn lots of techniques, patterns, and rhythms, which will make you a better guitarist in your favourite genre in the end. I didn't do it, progress was slow, and then I quit for 8 years due to limited time, studies, work and stuff. Only recently got back and it is frustrating to have to start from scratch again and fail even at songs I could play back in 2014. My biggest enemies back then were gallops and arpeggios/sweeps, still are but now I also can't do all of the other techniques anymore

I really like how in your early years especially how you played the same song at different ages. Most memorably sweet child of mine. At least in my opinion it's cool to see the out of tune bends, something relatable to all beginers, but then over the years you can see your learning process with realizing you play acoustic with a different approach, and on electric the bends start sounding in tune, then after that is when the Feel kicks in and it's obvious every aspect of your playing takes off from there. I guess my point is every guitarist feels cringe when they critic themselves learning but it was awesome of you to make it public so the rest of us can see even someone who obviously has it figured out nowadays had the very same "cringe" moments. That said my favorite phase was definitely the pink Floyd phase. Really nailed the feel. I definitely got that like "shit that was cool" giggle thing musicians get when they hear something that hits them in the soul.

My granddaughter is going to be 15 next month. The facial resemblance between the two of you is incredible. Your brilliance and innocence still show through but are now more radiant, as well as your prowess and expertise. Long may you continue to share your videos and inspire those of us who love the guitar, and the ability to play as you do.

I've been a guitar player, poet and specialist in more than 30 instruments for 150+ years. Since I've played so much, I never had the time to actually practise thus spending these days with writing youtube comments telling people how talented they are. Usually, I am American.

I don’t see anything that i can considered as "embarrassing" ! At all !
Let me tell you: if you don’t start exploring your skills, - you’ll never grow up as a person qualified in certain areas in your life! What ever the subject you named…
When you know your capacitance of your ability? Only if you start, even if you don’t know how to start, but you start it… you continue, even if you scared or ashamed wen you make a mistake…
And - when you have your first success, - you realize: that’s just a first step of your skill! I’m still learning and growing!
In conclusion: you give a good example of your own experience with guitar and music…
    You never know your capacitance…

What an amazing video! Not even remotely cringe!
I've followed your channel for a while, and you've grown by leaps and bounds.
I most like the Pink Floyd covers era, where you're so comfortable with playing that you are enjoying it. That's a milestone.
    Continued success!

I have been playing since 1998 and i can't even dream of playing addicted to pain or eric johnson at the age of 16/17. I just learned symphony of Destruction in 2020 and I could barely play the solo😄. You are AMAZING. I definitely need to practice with a metronome😆

The Pink Floyd music is my favorite of your playing although I love the way you play the Beat It solo. Nobody plays it better! You make it look so easy. I imagine you could play Steely Dan tunes like Don't Take Me Alive and Jeff Beck tunes from the Blow By Blow album and Lazy from Deep Purple.

Not a single cringe moment Sophie! I were pretty much on your 12-14 year old level at that same age (and I started at 11, selftaught and all), and although I still play the guitar to this day (I'm 45 now), my life turned up down when I were 16, my dad died, I got depressed, lost a lot, as I had to move to another country, etc... Years went by, without energy to build on my skills or do anything fruitful with life. First now at 45 (and after a hear attack), I'm regaining the flame of playing, and will commit years to it. Who knows, maybe when I'm 52 I'll be on your actual level!...which would be a blast! :D

I really like the parts where you're 14-16 years old playing crazy things with a methronome, things that I would like to play/practice myself. This video brings a huge inspiration towards playing guitar every day, even for 20-30 minutes. Thanks Sophie! Amazing video and there is nothing to be ashamed of. I applaud! I can tell how hard it is because I have a sister who has been learning to play a musical instrument for 8 years in a school and it takes courage and perseverance 💪

I'm sorry. Did you say you were: "Embarrassed!"? My friend. My Dear. You have done more than most humans your age now, plus all the old assholes who didn't have what you had because technology was not there to do what we can now. Girl! Shit! Go Rock, Goddammit!! Rock this Planet, please. Do what you gotta do!!! I am!! Now!! Now!! It's time. No wasting now. You learned music while it still existed as a folk, non corporate love song to everyone you knew here and here and everywhere and why not? I am Music! My Name is Matt McCarel.
I grew up in the McCarel's House of Music. And do yo know what that was like? You do!!! Peace my friend. Reach out if you want. If not - much love and peace. God Bless! You have some talent, my dear, that scares me, so I will back off = back away and bow. Love!!! Peace! And in the end: Relax! Don't Do It! PS. I'm so fucking jealous!!!!! I could puke!!!!!! Puke!!! Spew!!! But I'm hungry.
