Like you did, I really struggle with sweep picking because it always seems like you have to have reached a basic speed before you're able to perform it, but the drag-stop-drag technique you talked about makes sense, and is a very good way to be able to build up speed and coordination with both hands. Thank you!
Very, very nice set of exercises. I like them all. 3 is a variation on a concept I already use in playing scales, that of breaking them up in sequences and working up and down. I've mostly done this in triplets, but I'm starting to do more 4's, 5's and 6's. I like the way you organize the pent 4's in your head, alternating sides of the pattern like that. The others are all new to me. I love the drill for linking pentatonic positions. I can make immediate use of that, as I am just getting to the stage of trying to move fluidly about the fretboard in pentatonic positions. But I think my absolute favourite is 4, the hammer-on/pull-off strengthening drill. I like using legato, but my 4th finger is weak, and my hammer-ons on any finger aren't as good as my pull-offs. This will help. My preference for more technical info or drills-exercises, if you do them, would be ones pitched like this, to the early-to-mid stages of intermediate playing, or to the more ambitious advanced beginner. That early-mid intermediate spot is were I am right now, and anything that helps me develop through that is grist for the mill. These will help! I can tell already. Many thanks.
Yo Sophie! This is such a great great video... I am so incredibly lazy with exercises and have some really, really bad habits. It's stuff like this that totally changes my playing when i get lazy and doodle around, making some nice tunes but at the same hanging on to bad habits and not at all expanding on leads and good habits. So, thank you :) Just one thing: I had to watch the sweep exercise in slow mo quite a few times to figure out the actual 'picking' side of things. As for as I understand (and actually as per the tab itself): down pick all the ascending notes (up to the 7th fret on high E), up pick the 2nd note on the high E (10th fret) followed by the slide up to 14th and pull off to 10th. Initially on the first high E phrase I was playing: down pick 7th fret, hammer on to 10th, slide to 14th and pick it, pull off to 10th. When you played that section by itself you also picked the 14th fret, for the purpose of the video of course as to be heard. If you see this, please can clarify that is correct as my OCD is going nuts :D Cheers alot alot
Way better exercises than the usual spider-walk variations. Even as a beginner, I can see the logic and additional power of breaking away from the standard scales, but still using them as a base to make it more understandable. Thanks. I expect I'll be annoying my family with some of these exercises too.
Started working on these recently and in only a few days I can notice a difference. Speed and accuracy is slowly coming along but my old fingers feel much less tight from years of bad habits I am making a conscious effort to break. Next up learn theory and actually learn music and not be a monkey just mimicking things I think I hear.
Hola sofi hola mi barby.como estas. Sos una muy buena persona.te agradesco todo losque estas hasiendo pormi.y te pido disculpa por todo los problemas causado. Saludo mi barby te quiero mucho.Roberto.
Thank you for this. I'm 50 years old. Just bought a Schecter. I briefly played guitar from 16 to 21. I wasn't really good. I sold my Charvel and haven't played in 28 years. Just started playing again and I absolutely love it. I'm hooked and getting pretty good fairly fast in comparison to how I use to play. What a difference it makes when you become passionate about it. I have to say about 6 months ago I came across. Your short of you playing november rain solo. And I was watching you. Feel the music and it really intrigued me to want to start playing guitar again. Because I can feel music too. And I know if I could put that into my guitar playing. I could be pretty amazing Someday. So I have to say it is you. Who first inspired we do pick the guitar up again so thank you so much. I absolutely love seeing beautiful young women Thriving in their creative expression of whatever it is they are passionate about
I've heard the Sweet Child O Mine intro originated from Slash's string skipping excersise. You are absolutelly brilliant, Sofie. Young girl playing and teaching rock guitar in the times of electronic music total domination. Maybe there is still hope for rock.
I used to practice the Talk dirty to me solo when i was first learning ,and i’d just do the pull off run at the end as an exorcize. It really is a simple but mind blowing way of realizing how easy, yet complicated sounding runs can really take you to the next level! I’d encourage anyone to learn it!
I appreciate you offering informative and critical building blocks to help others learn guitar. All of your music is enjoyable and we are fortunate that you make your musical talents accessible.
Thanks so much for this Sophie. This is going to be absolutely invaluable to me. Exercises as you say but so much fun to play. Absolutely brilliant. Legato probably will be my favourite. But they all deserve to be here. Many many thanks.
Pretty much addicted to the first exercise, I can see how she would just play on it for a while. It’s like when you learn the extended pentatonic scale, you just keep running with it. Great exercises
I've been following your channel for a while and I really appreciate that you offer these kinds of tutorials. As a novice player that's been dabbling for a long time; these kinds of exercises really just bridge the gap to help me to change things up
Dude your hair is perfect. Also exercise 3 is dividing the scale in fours and starting on the next note each time. I do that exercise all the time with different scales. Doing it in 3s is awesome too !
Sophie, if by any chance at all you happen to this would you please consider covering a Buckethead track? "Siege Engine" or "The Moltrail Part 2" would be just incredible but honestly, it really doesn't matter, anything of your choice would just be fantastic to see/hear! I'll keep my fingers crossed :-)
Hi Sophie I notice that you play everything on first and third finger where on three fret spreads I use my pinky. Any particular reason for that? Is it to keep an even form by keeping the fingers the same throughout?
Ich habe Deutsch in der Grundschule gelernt ...... wie sich herausstellte = sie haben mir nichts beigebracht! но ты выглядишь классно , так-же и играешь!!!
Hey Sophie, I've had to change my life (new gmail address coz I couldn't verify the old one) Loving your stuff so much that I've got myself a full kit with Squier Strat so now I've got learn from basics (75years newby!) Scared?🎸
Fantastic tutorial. Thanks very much Sophie. Check out this band Ian Moss on guitar youtube. Cold Chisel- Wild Colonial Boy [live at the playroom] Best regards. john.
Excellent video beautifully done Sophie amazing work on your behalf you've achieved greatness ⚡, just fantastic & relaxed , even a master sweeper geez . Thoroughly enjoyed 💫🎙
Are you a farm girl? @ 16:43 you use the expression "till the cows come home". The last farmer too use that expression was the year 1969. I'm just having fun. 🙂
I loved these exercises, they are fun to practice and cover a lot of techniques! Thanks a lot, I'm a new member and I'm enjoying your lessons and your covers!
You're great, in playing and teaching! I discovered your channel having seen you performing the Beat It solo. Your execution is awesome! Couldn't stop watching! 🔝 Cheers! 😉👍
I would love to hear what you can do with jaymes young - infinity and get out alive - three days grace, keeping the lyrics intact but maybe a different spin on instrumentals
I know one of the biggest complaints that you get is how you never give anything back and how selfish you are when it comes to your subscribers, so its nice to see you sharing some knowlege and tips and actually giving a little back, even if it was only to promote Skillshare. Well done.
Hi thank you for the video…Can i ask I’ve just started to learn guitar and I have small hands and arms, with you being a Pettit lady did you find if hard on your left arm and hand? And does it get easier the more you practice? Thank you.
My favorite is the single sweep pick part. Double sweeps and triple sweeps take a lot of picking speed in downward strokes and upward strokes on the reverse
It's weird but I think it's much easier for me to learn from a woman cause her beauty and skill just demands attention.I would love to learn from Zakk Wylde or Andy James but the fact is they just don't look as nice as her.

"Dust in the wind" started out as an exercise but he turned it into a riff.

Amazing exercises, I will definitely try them all! Thanks a million for the video 😊🖤
Love the little string skipping exercise, reminds me of Vito Bratta's solos
