Wonderful video. Sketchbooks are such a wonderful tool that can be used in so many ways. I'm always trying to convince everyone to keep a sketchbook, even if they're not an "artist". It's simply such a wonderful thing to be able to pick up, grab a pen, and just doodle and let your creativity flow from you. ❤
Yes that is so true. It is something to so with the ability to mark make, writing or drawing, that (especially with a fountain pen) that I have always loved. There is something magical about it that just soothes my chattering brain.
I have a sketchbook for every place my husband goes fishing. I go with him and do plain air. That is my most prolific sketching time.
That is awesome! I often describe sketching as fishing with a pen. It's the same vide. I lots of looking with enough to occupy your brain. 👍👍
I really love your sketches! Stunning!
Thank you! I am off to check out more of your videos. Love your down to earth presentation style. Your sketchbooks are amazing! See you soon! :)
Fabulous comment. Thank you so much 💓
Agreed!!!
"My background is in industrial and product design". Yes, it sticks out a mile, and that's why I've subbed. 🙂
🤣🤣 thanks 👍
Thanks as always Doug, enjoyed this and some of your bonkers commentary, makes me smile or chuckle.. "rabbits" 🤣
I can't believe my videos now have thier own in jokes. Ohhhh the vanity 🤣🤣
A sketch book to help log a vacation sounds great. I will give it a try. Thanks
Have fun!
That was a good one Doug 😉
Looking forward to the mega sketchbook review that you mentioned...
Thanks. Coming soon! 👍👍
Thanks for the inspiration! These tips gave me the courage to start a sketchbook.
I'm so glad! That's what it's all about. Much appreciated 🙏
This is an excellent tutorial. Love your ideas, your enthusiasm, and your artwork. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much! Your comment gave me a BIG SMILE 😀
You do make me laugh Doug 😀 thanks for all your wonderful videos. Oh and I love your yellow shirt ☀️
Yes I love the sunshine colour too. It seems fashionable at the moment for everyone to wear black. I find bright colours lift my mood. 👍😎
Lovely video and points that you tell us. I agree, drawing is so good for soul. Enjoy the journey and have fun. Oh, yes. I would love to see info about different sketch books.
Yes! Thank you!
Your soul shines through, in your videos. Namaste’
Wow, thank you
Yes! Wonderful video. I have so many sizes of sketchbooks. 4x4 cold press, 6x8 hot press, 9x12 spiral. 8x8 square. 100 percent cotton, cellulose, etc. I felt guilty stockpiling sketchbooks and thought there was something addictive in my personality. But now, after this video I feel like it's the normal creative thing to do. I have different books for different themes. All still unfinished. But I realise now, that it's the right path. Experimentation. Seeing what works and what does not. Today I moved into my big one and YES the lines were more expressive. The smalls require details. The bigs can be more freeing. Thanks!! Love your channel.
Thanks Georgette. You can never have enough sketchbook... FACT! Keep playing and having fun. Remember it's only paper! 👍
i have a bunch of unfinished unstarted sketchbooks. i feel like im still looking for the right one.
@@nickorange4881do you have a favourite loose paper? If you do, consider making your own sketchbook. There are several YT creators with how to videos. I've watched several and will be making my own with my favourite Fabriano cold press. I also won an auction with some large sheets of W&N rough and some Arches cold and hot press sheets. 22"x36" ish and so intimidating to cut but I know I will dive right into using them if I make them into sketchbooks.
I’m not surprised that you haven’t gotten any negative comments… you’re so warm & natural. All the best! ❤
Thank you so much! That's very kind.
Great video. I did a cactus notebook over a month ago. Lots of fun . Love from Arizona 🌵🌵🌵
Thanks very much. I love Arizona ❤
Oh and one other thing…. You mentioned about not having any negative comments yet…. This is the first video of yours that I’ve seen, but you have a really nice relaxed and friendly manner and I think that helps. The closest I’ve had to a negative comment was someone saying I talked too much on a bookbinding tutorial (which was probably true) but all the other comments said they appreciated how slow and detailed it was! So I’m guessing the person who thought I talked too much, probably already knew how to do it! (Looking how long this comment is, the talking too much is seeming more appropriate! Haha)
Well I like long comments so you fire away. I will have a look at your channel and get some book binder knowledge in my brain. I'm relatively new to RUclips and it's taken me a while to find my voice but I'm getting there. I'm sure I'll get some more negative comments as my channel get more like me in time. (Basically wierder and weirder) 🤣
@@dougjacksonart I’ve been on RUclips for a few years but not super regular with posting videos, plus my videos have all sorts of projects going on, so I don’t think the RUclips algorithm quite knows what to do with me! Hahaha
Great tips, lovely work, thanks!
Thanks so much.
It's the first time I have come across you. This is a great video...prompting me to use my sketch book more oftern.
Welcome Penny. There is loads of vids on the channel so have a roam around and I'm sure you'll find some usefull tips. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
This just popped up in my YT suggestions. I am so glad it did - thanks for these tips. I am now subscribed and off to explore your back catalogue of videos. I enjoyed this video and really liked your art. I am off to watch more !
Welcome aboard! There is a huge library of stuff to wander around in. If you get lost or need any advice just SHOUT 🤣🤣
Love your icon. Penquins are fabulous 👌
@@dougjacksonart Thanks, that's very kind! Penguins are special birds to me.
This was incredible. Amazing words. So much to think about. First time here. Thank you.
Welcome aboard 😀. I do ramble on a bit 👍👍👍
I'd love to see a mega sketch book video!
I better get busy then...🤣🤣 ONWARD!!!
Great job! I’d love tutorials on boats, water, waterfront scenes, etc. I live on a boat and am just starting my drawing/watercolor journey.
I have some tutorials on boat sketching on this channel. Check it out. What sort of boat do you live on? I love anything to do with boats and sail whenever I can on other people boats. It's the most cost effective way 🤣🤣
I saw the “boats 3 ways” video, very helpful. We’re on a Leopard 48 catamaran in French Polynesia. I can’t seem to mention on here where you can see it, but it’s sailingmenagerie and menagerieacademy. Keep up the good work!
I love having different themed sketchbooks. I think it’s a terrific way to dive deep into a subject.
Great minds think alike 😄
Thank you for your video, this the first time I have seen your channel. I love your approach to art. I feel inspired and I’m very much a beginner. Your own sketch book s are beautiful, each page a different story.❤❤I will be back to see your channel again. Julie Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks Julie and what a wonderful comment. I've been going about a year so have plenty of videos on here. It's a bit of a mix but I'm improving and finding my feet. Some content can be a bit odd but like life I guess... wierd and wonderful 😁😁
Doug, your videos are SO much fun! Always positive and inspiring, informative and enlightening. Your art is absolutely gorgeous and I very much appreciate and relate with your philosophy. Who knew ‘googling’ ’how to use a Fude pen’ would lead to this? 🤗 I am very happy I subscribed to this wonderful channel and would LOVE to see a sketchbook review! Now off to purchase a beverage 🍺👏❤️🇨🇦
Thanks so much. Your comment and beer is very much appreciated 👍. Some of my videos are just me drawing and I guess not that intresting but I'm try more and more to get creative with the content and do fresh stuff. Like lots of things I guess it's a case of slowly making things up! 🤣🤣
I love listening to your videos and your bonkers style of showing us what to do, I have learned so much from you. thankyou
You are so welcome. Thanks for your lovely words 😘
I needed that encouragement I’m not very proficient in Art or drawing but I do enjoy my (Happy ) accidents. This video confirms my Sketch book approach to Fine Art. It’s mine and who cares? It’s mine and I have enjoyed the adventure.
Perfectly put. I love it!
first time I have seen you and I will listen to this one again. Realie great hints. Thanks heaps for yr time
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Doug, for another wonderful video Have a nice week
Thanks. You too.
Wonderful - love your way of presenting! I love sketchbooks - adore writing - Bravo and thank you!!
Thank you so much!
Love the sketchbooks Doug...wish you did more about the fantastic background techniques you use...
Thanks Jess. I'm always up for some new ideas for vids and apologies but exactly what do you mean by backgrounds?
@@dougjacksonart
Thanks for getting back so quickly!
When looking through your sketchbooks.. and I could spend my days looking through other people's sketchbooks...I was fascinated by the different ways you have treated the backgrounds if the sketches. Behind the main objects..particularly skies but not always. Sometimes solid ink but at other times quite diffuse. Sometimes my backgrounds overwhelm and kill the sketch completely. Judging whether to background first or subject first can be a problem too. Jings Laddie...just give a wee talk about how you approach what is behind the subject of your drawings and sketches and the techniques you use to do it.
Thanks for you videos..it's good to laugh and learn. Jess
Great. I can certainly do a vid on that and it would make a wonderful subject. Alot of my ideas come from my days working as a designer and I do forget how unusual that makes some of my art. Thanks so much for the inspiration 🙏 ❤
Really enjoyed that, some great information offered. Now I look forward to your review of sketchbooks, further courses and ideas of what to sketch.
Awesome, thank you! Loads of vids in the back catalogue to watch too. 👍👍
Love these tips!! Not your standard run of the mill ones, but really practical and sensible ones. Tfs❤
Glad you like them Nathalie! And thanks for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate that 🙏 😀
Great stuff Doug...as always.
Thanks Gary. Have a great day 👍
I really appreciated this video content. I am afraid that I have collected and purchased a lot of art supplies that are "too good" to use and feel a lot of pressure to simply start sketching. I went to art college and was at one time competent but have raised a family and now with time would like to return. I felt that I resonated with all of these tips. I am feeling an urge to simply play and not worry about the final product. I will enjoy some of your other videos while beginning. Than you.
Glad it was helpful! It's funny you mentioned your kids there because mine have taught me so much about my approach to art. We encourage our kids to just give something a go and don't judge the results yet we punish ourselves horribly with our own expectations. Life is short, play more, care less 👍👍🤣
I’m going to start using my sketchbooks regularly. Thank you for your help. 😊
You're so welcome!
Nice to meet you, Doug. Thanks for sharing such inspiring videos. I'm new to sketching, drawing, art, and all things art-related but I'm glad I feel pulled to carry-on with learning along the way. My plan is to put together a to-go art kit to keep with me as I am out n' about. I will be back as I enjoy being here. ~ Karla
Well you a very welcome and thanks for your lovely comment. I try and have a sketch bag ready to pick up on the way out. Its a great excuse to get out into the big wide world. 👍👍
I absolutely LOVE this video and all of the ideas and art. Thank you for sharing your creativity and passion. I have dozens of empty sketchbooks and you've given me the courage to sully the pages. ;) Many, many thanks!
Thanks. GO FOR IT!!!
Brilliant advice. Thank you. Yes please for a sketchbook discussion.
You got it!
Lovely video Doug. Really glad your channel is doing well. Very much deserved 😊
Thanks Liz. I'm having a lot of fun creating vids. I guess that's the most important thing 🤷 🤣👍
@@dougjacksonart just like you said about creating art. The 'doing' is the important bit. Will keep that in mind the next time a sketch doesn't come out quite as I'd like it to (ie almost always!) 😏
Ooh I do love self improvement lists! Some great takeaways here and just in time for my brand new sketchbook. Only I now realise I shall need at least four 🤔. Excellent Doug, thank you.
Glad it was helpful! I am not on commission to sell sketchbooks. Well not yet anyway. 😀
Right up my street Doug!Answered so many questions and niggles in my head!Really enjoyed looking through your sketchbook, great paintings, would love to get up to your standards one day!Especially loved your portraits, which I like to attempt, like the way you do them so loosely! The hinges in my elbow seem to seize up!🤪Perhaps you may cover this at some point😉I do appreciate how much work goes into making videos, editing etc!Much appreciated!!Glad you will be going into different sketchbooks, was going to ask you about a decent one that doesn’t bleed through,so will be looking forward to that vlog. Not surprised you have had only good comments, how could anyone be negative about someone who is offering their time with informative and inspirational tutorials.Well done Doug ,you deserve the beers!!🍻❤️
Ahh what a kind message. Beverly, as ever your support is much appreciated. I may have a beer tonight. 😀
Just found your channel and so enjoyed this video! I am very early in my sketchbook / art journey, and it is honestly one of the best things I’ve ever started for my stress level, mental health, etc. Great tips provided here!
Fabulous 👍. Welcome aboard 😀
I love your philosophy. Yes, it’s the journey that brings joy. We are getting ready for a big trip over sees, and I love your idea of a family sketchbook. I’m not going to be able to fill a whole sketchbook, but I’ll see what gems I can gather. Thank you for sharing!
Excellent. Don't forget you can always sketch it in later too from your photos. A friend of mine also stick tickets and leaves in thiers. Anything small, flat and pretty. 👍👍
Us too.. think limited colour and add at home maybe 🤔😃
Have you been painting for a very long time? Your sketches as look so good its a little intimidating to think about being able to get there. I seem to try really hard to get something to look just like what I'm looking at. Yours look like a sketch and like what you're looking at. Thank you. Good video
I have been drawing since childhood but don't think that the subject has to look like the sketch of the other way round. Enjoyment and experimentation is more important than realism. Especially as a beginner. Keep on creating and enjoying and don't put any pressure on yourself.
Really enjoying watching your channel. Love the knowledge you share and your sense of humor. Thank you for leaving the "real life" bits in, like dropping your pen. It's so refreshing and more enjoyable.
Thanks for watching!. Its nice to not be too slick. One of the nice things about the channels is I'm preaching a simple non-perfectionist approach so I don't want the vids to be too slick.
definitely like to see a sketch book overview, I'm just starting out and bought a few now, some are so rubbish, looking forward to that.
Excellent 👍
Great video - thanks! This is the first time I’ve come across your channel - I’m subscribing!
Welcome aboard!
Great sketchbook video - feels personal 😂😂😂
Glad you liked it. 👍
Magic is in the middle💜
So true 👍. Like a lovely pie. 😍
Found you and subbed straight away, i needed thia video today thank you!! Off to watch some more.
I think i get too precious about my aketch books and then freeze. My last one took 15 years to fill lol 😆 the next one wont!! As you said not every page needs to be perfect!
Thanks so much.
Muchas gracias por tus consejos.
You are most welcome. Thanks for visiting my channel.
Great ideas. Enjoyed your art that I saw in the filp-throughs. Thanks.
Thanks so much!
I loved this video. Just shared it with my sketching friends. Thanks so much!
Awesome! Thank you! Sharing the content really help. You are a star 🌟
oK i'm inspired thanks 🤩
You are most welcome 👍👍
I'm so glad this video popped up out of nowhere. Your work is inspiring.
On the topic of sketchbooks, I make my own stitch-bound hard cover books, sketch and journal. I use catalogue sample wallpapers to cover them, and I might varnish to seal.
Happy sketching.
That sounds amazing. What a skill. I'd love to have a go at that one day.
I know what you mean about putting you name in sketch books. I lost an A4 sized book which had some sketches that I enjoyed doing, and have never got it back because I didn't name it. Me and my labelling machine are about to become good friends. Thanks for the video - lots of good ideas there.
Exactly!!.. I think people are essentially kind and appreciate art so I'm being hopeful. 👍👍 Labelling machine?? Ohh very fancy!
What great tips and ideas! I started doing urban sketching during Covid. I’ve been pretty consistent with practice and looking back at my first sketches I can tell I’m improving. Now I want to try all these ideas. Thank you.
You are so welcome! I think Covid changed all out art journeys. It certainly rebooted mine.
Would like to see what you suggest in a sketch book...
Coming soon 🙏😄
Would love your thoughts on different sketchbooks. And just found your channel in my suggestions and subscribed. Love your vibe and all you said in this video!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
My dad was a sketcher and painter , i wish i could draw, but i take photos instead 😊
We all need to create.
I’ve just found your channel, so glad I did😊. A great video full of interesting ideas. I love that your family have some input into your art books too 😊
Thanks so much! 😊 Welcome 😃
the bit about the "middle bit" and how to look at doing art really resonated with me. good stuff.
Glad to hear it! It is hard sometimes to get these ideas across but I reckon that one worked.
Great tips. I’m taking note whilst I relish your beautiful work
Ahhh thanks 😊 🙏
The only thing with having 12 points in your video is I feel I want to leave 12 comments! Haha! But I’ll pick one…. You mentioned about getting a cheap sketchbook for those out and about sketches when you’re just waiting around with time to kill, I do something “similar” but…. I make my own sketchbooks so I use leftovers of the good paper to make a tiny book that would fit in my purse or pocket and I carry one pen that has multiple colours. It is my “Emergency sketch kit”!
That is such good idea.💡 I've been meaning to have a go at sketchbook making for aged but I keep getting distracted by side quests and parenting. Maybe that would make a fun video, me sewing a sketchbook to my finger..🤣🤣
Seriously... I'm actually writing that down!
@@dougjacksonart but please don’t actually sew it to you finger! Haha
Though I have been doing art for quite a while, I FINALLY got "into sketchbooks." I never realized the value. Especially, now since I am teaching classes, my sketch books are valuable. For the first time, I will be offering my sketch books for viewing (doing an art tour type of event) and excited to hear comments for the public. Yes, some are good and some bad. But....."beauty is in the eye of the beholder!" Thank you for your views.
Super thoughts here. We are definitely on the same page. Sketchbooks are such a wonderful intresting artwork. So personal and complex.
I started drawing and painting recently and used a A4 sketch book dividing the page into 4 until now. Now I can use it better thanks to you
Great to hear 👂 👍
Great tips thank you. Looking forward to more video's 😀
More to come!
Thanks, good info.
Glad it was helpful!
Just stumbled across your channel and found your tips informative, and the delivery fun. Subbed.
Welcome aboard! Thanks so much 🙏 😀
thank you for this video. it was good. :)
You're welcome 😊
Hi Doug! Thanks for this very encouraging video! I've been using a couple sketch books and enjoying them. I really liked your reasonings for using sketch books. I loved seeing inside your sketchbook. I love your style of sketching and your boats etc. just lovely. Thanks for your encouragement and style of communication in your videos - I find you very down to earth and genuine.
Susan in AZ🥰🏜️
Glad it was helpful Susan. Thanks for your kind comments . 🙂
Thanks this was really helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Glad to hear!
I spotted 'Rivelin Walk' in one of your super sketch books lol, does that mean you are based in God's Own County, or were you just visiting? It is lovely down there in the Rivelin Valley. I began my later life art journey (in watercolours) back in the lock ups, and only really found the benefits of using sketch books in the last year. I don't know why I didn't use them earlier! I like to use them for the many tutorials I watch, and then I have something to refer back to if I want to. I never used to be able to draw at all, but I can definitely see that it's a skill that can be learned, and improved upon with practice. Enjoyed the video, thanks 🙏💖
Great to hear Melanie. Yes I am Sheffield based. 👍
Just found you and subscribed 😊 The boat ❤
Welcome aboard!
Hi! Thanks for the pep talk :-) I listened while I was sketching and it was good company. I wonder which sketchbook you used for the family sketchbook that you show in this video - I love books with that kind of paper and rounded off corners. I wonder what brand makes that. Thanks again!
You are most welcome. I love the idea of people Sketching while viewing. That family sketchbook is a Moleskine A4 watercolour pad. Not my favourite paper but a really good sketchbook. 👌
Agreed about lettering practice. Kind of meditative, do you use lines that you then erase? What is your typical letter size for page headings and narrative? Thx
It depends on how much text I'm doing really. More that a couple of lines and I'll probably use light pencil line and rub out later. Text size really depends too on what I'm doing. I'd say just try different sizes and see what works for you 😉
♥♥♥♥
Thanks 👍
I LOVE your sketchbook art 😍 so beautiful! So you have any tutorials?
* do you
Plenty of tips on my RUclips channel. I'm working on some other lessons as the moment. 👍😁
😊 thanks 👍
Ive not bought a sketch book. My play is making little cards. Should i still do a sketchbook
Little cards are great fun. I do that too. No you don't need a sketchbook to have fun but it is always fun to try new things. 😉
In Dutch we say: 'hartverwarmend'
Dank ja well 👌 👍
2 minus 4 …… I just left your first “negative” comment. 😂 get it? (2-4=-2) 🎉
🤣🤣🤣 very clever. 👍
This is wonderful information and I really love your artwork. It does look lovely because I do journaling and want to incorporate art into my journal.
Glad you enjoyed 😉
