This video provides a simple shadow trick to capture a simple scene, making it more 3D than otherwise. Most beginners are too focused on all the DETAILS, this "trick" will help a beginner sketcher to see the BIG PICTURE, especially SHADOWS.
*****************************
Process:
1) Simple sketch in pen - I use a broad size fountain pen with permanent / bulletproof ink.
2) I worry about the BIG shapes, not the tiny details.
3) Whenever I put in details it is to INDICATE architectural details.
4) Key SHADOWS are marked in first - using neutral purple - combination of French Ultramarine, Perm Alizarin Crimson and Quin Burnt Orange.
5) The rest of the colours are just EMBELLISHMENT!
Materials:
1) Coldpress A5 sketchbook.
2) Daniel Smith watercolors - French Ultramarine, Perm Alizarin Crimson, Quin Gold, Quin Burnt Orange, Cad Yellow, Cad Orange, Green Gold, Phthalo Green (BS).
3) Brushes - tiny no.1, 100, 4 and 6 sized brushes
*****************************
Painting should be fun and relaxing and not stressful, there's no objective other than learning and having a relaxing time. Painting should be easy, based on the skill level that you are at, no stress, but rather enjoyable.

I love this. I love your philosophy of doing a quick sketch...... that's what I am trying to do. Not there yet.. but that's my goal. I need to look and see what other videos you have posted. Thank you !!! Wonderful sketch and great tip about the shadows....
Hello! Thank you for checking out my videos... much appreciated! Let me know how i can help, if its within my knowledge, will be more than happy to share!! Keep well and keep safe!
@@WheeTeck Thank you for sharing your techniques and knowledge. I have only been painting for a couple years - mostly landscapes in either watercolor or acrylics on 1/4 sheets of watercolor paper. My biggest problem is doing the sketch..... I'm not very good at it :-). I want to be able to loosely sketch the main parts of what I'm looking at..... particularly buildings...... to give a reasonable impression of what I'm seeing, but without doing a detailed "drawing" with every tiny detail indicated and all of the rules of perspective precisely followed. (I do know and understand the rules of perspective.) In other words, I want to learn how to do a sketch similar to what you are doing here.... So thank you. I will go back and watch all of your previous videos and then I shall practice practice practice and practice some more in a sketchbook.
Haha you’ve got a plan already! All the best!! Have fun!
You made it look so simple. But that’s because you’re experienced and skilful. Well done!
I am sure anyone can get there with some effort 😊😊🙏
“The structure holds the sketch together”. Brilliant. Thankyou
👍😊😊🙏 Thank you!
Thanks Whee Teck for posting this. I know I saw it 4 years ago, but did not comment then. Thanks again. I did learn a thing or two. structure->shadow->embellish!

‘’ I’m not a very precise sketcher’’ - maybe not, but you are a darn good one. You have your own style and that’s worth a lot. As you say yourself, You tell a story.

@@WheeTeck np!!!
You are a master!!! You don't even did a pencil sketch!!!!!!! You go direct with a marker 😱😱😱
With some practice you can do it too! If you think ratio against the first line, everything will be in proportion… 🙏🙏😊😊
Thank you for sharing. Absolutely stunning!

Loved this! I especially liked that you did the shadowing first, I'll have to try that. I'm still a beginner but I'm curious to try this out. Thank you so much for sharing! 🙏🏻
Thanks for tuning in! Enjoy the journey it’s fun!!🙏🙏👍👍
Thank you for sharing this, I am really trying to relax and get loose about sketching, my poor little brain just takes in soooo much detail I find it hard to just move on to the next thing in the scene without being overwhelmed 😅 It was so fun to watch this whole thing come together and how you focussed on the shadows to get the real feeling of the scene, thanks again.
Glad it’s of use to you!! Details suck everybody in… haha… yes learn to let go and loosen up!!
Your an awesome artist and really explain your artist process beautifully. Thankyou so much for sharing your creativity. I love your fountain pen could you possibly tell me what it is and is the permanent ink brand called bulletproof permanent? Your really inspiring. Yay for you 🎉✍️
Hi thank you!! The fountain pen is a TWISBI, and ink is De Atrementis Archival Black. 🙏🙏😊
Thank you! You’re very confident with colour and that’s something I’m trying to work on so this helps a lot.
Ah colors, yes, do check out my Free eBook… thank you for tuning in!

I love this tip, what a great way to lay down some structure before adding color and interest!
Glad you like it!! I am just passing it on… learned it from people much smarter than me! 😉
love your style!
Hey thanks! Thanks for checking out my channel... have a great day! Peace!
I wish I had your confidence love your sketch work tfs xx
Hey thanks! I started in 2012 but sketched often, I think I have clocked 4000 hours so far in my journey with watercolor. The practice helps!! 🙏🙏😊
Steven Reddy, who published a number of books and has training videos on Craftsy, so, applying 3 layer shadows before colorwork is a fundamental part of his elaborated process. He calls it grisaille and uses indian ink, so you can wash any colors on top of the layers. His process is so great that often you simply leave out color layers completely.
Thanks for sharing, I know Steven Reddy’s work… thanks for sharing!
I lived in Singapore for 3 years when I was a kid. My dad was in the oil industry.
Nice. Singapore changes frequently. Come back to visit!

I love this sketch.
I notice you were sketching with a TWSBI fountain pen. What nib size did you use for this drawing (if you recall)? The ink flow seemed very nice and wet. Did you use Artamentis ink?
Thanks.
Hey thanks! Yes its a TWISBI Med and yes its De Atrementis Archival Black… 🙏😊
It’s beautiful! ❤
Hey thanks!!
Brilliant - thanks!
You're welcome! 😊🙏
Great job and thank you for sharing. I've been painting for years, but still ALWAYS find it very helpful to see how others work to get ideas. I appreciate your commentary as well which helps to understand your process.

Thanks
Thank you very much - such a useful tip.
Thanks for tuning in. Glad to be of service.
A great idea indeed! Will definitely try it. Thanks!
Hey thanks for tuning in and feedback! Much appreciated....
It's true, shadows do give the third dimentional structure to the whole art work. I will try this sometime.
Thank you. Do try!!
Perfect! 💜
🙏🙏🙏😊
this is great, thanks for sharing! What ink are you using in the fountain pen? is it waterproof? is the pen a pain to clean?
Hi! You are welcome… the ink I use is De Atrementis, it’s waterproof when dry. Fountain pen like all others, need cleansing every now and then, but then these days I prefer my Sailor Fude Nib (this video shows TWISBI) as it is easier to clean.
Whee, I am so very happy I found your channel! I am just beginning my journey into urban sketching and this was exactly what I needed. I really like your style (and I don’t just mean your beautiful sketch/painting). I have decided to subscribe to your channel and go back to power-watch your other videos 😁 All the best from Canada 🇨🇦
Hey thanks for tuning in! There’s an eBook you can use as guide to the channel. Look into the description… all the best to the fantastic journey of art and sketching…
Love this and I’m trying to do ink and wash xx
Thanks! Yes Ink and Wash is a lot of fun, try all kind of “recipes” it helps your learning journey for sure!!
Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing! I am trying urban sketching so I can draw more than horses!😁 Your make it look so easy...I know with practice I will improve.
Absolutely will improve if you put in the time….
@@WheeTeck Thank you!
hello! really enjoyed your video! I really would like to know though, how one may choose what to sketch, and what one may leave out of the sketch, while still telling the story completely... i notice you have left out the complete left side of the picture, and yet the story is complete. thank you!
Hello! It’s about the focus of your sketch, everything is nice but not everything is relevant. If the story is a person with a dog going for a walk at Everton Park then what’s the minimum I can get away with? That becomes the choice… 😊😊🙏
Amazing. Im just starting to try my hand at urban sketching and this really helped. Especially your tip on shadowing before colour! I will absolutely apply that to my future work.
Thank you
Hey thank you and all the best to your urban sketching journey! It’s been a blast for me so I hope it will be for you!
Brilliant! Thank you so much. 💐🌸
Thanks for tuning in!! 🙏🙏😊
Super great presentation - love your style. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺 😊
Thanks! Very appreciative of your kind words!!😃
Whee Teck Ong / Hi Wee. I love Singapore been there a few times. May I ask you if I come again. I would very much like to meet you and maybe do a private session in urban sketching. Is that possible? 😊
@@MsMonika59 Hey - look me up if you ever come, we can always organize something with the Urban Sketching community here! :)
That sounds great. Won’t be for a while with this Covid. But I know for sure I will meet you one day. Can you please do a video on perspective please - I would very much like that 🙏⭐️😊
@@MsMonika59 One day!! Let's pray and hope this Covid goes away quickly, or that vaccine is available in short order! Sure, I will put a to do to get a video on perspective! Thanks for the request... :)
I just simply find your techniques and finished artwork so fascinating and really has set my desire to learn on fire. Thank you for your inspiration. My sketchbook arrived whilst I was in hospital and after a few more days rest I hope to start sketching.
Keep safe my brother 🙏
I’m glad you are inspired and that I’m of service! Keep well!
Very helpful. Thank you. Now if I could just learn perspective..
Welcome! Have you seen this video on perspective? ruclips.net/video/bILezIcMJeg/видео.html
Very good lesson. Thank you Sir.
Welcome! Thanks for tuning in...😊
Interesting. I prefer the opposite. A light wash of just solid flat colors, then shadow on top.
If that works for you… then it’s the best recipe! I think both recipe / process can work but it does lead to slightly different outcome. The only advantage with this recipe is you deal with shadows first. 😊🙏
@SmashingSketches I agree. Whichever technique works best for the artist. My brain works the opposite. Seeing the color on the paper actually helps me determine the best places and depth for the shadows, especially if I'm working from memory. Doesn't matter how you get there as long as you get to the desired outcome.
I also use purple/violet for my shadows. Might not be the most realistic look, but it definitely gives it a more whimsical look. Especially if you use yellow for your bright highlights or your under-wash.
Thank you for the wonderful tips and for making sketching simple and achievable. You definitely have a way of explaining it clearly. I subscribed to your channel and will definitely give this a try. Thank you for sharing. 👍🏼👍🏼
Hello! Thank you for your kind words!! I am glad to be of service and hopefully you will find other videos helpful as well! 🙏😊
Thanks ,lovely tip :-)
Welcome! Thanks for tuning in!!
I'll try this. Makes sense.
Good luck with it! Let me know if you have questions... another video of similar concept ruclips.net/video/uiyTovyMnQE/видео.html
New sub. Beautiful inspirational work. I will attempt to emulate your style. THANKS 🙏
Welcome! Thanks for tuning in. I’m glad to be of service!!
Great video! I just happened upon your channel for the first time- so glad I found it. Can you please tell me what ink you are using? I have tried several black fountain pen inks for sketching, but they all bleed when I apply watercolor, even if I let it dry overnight. Thanks!
Thanks for tuning in!! 🙏😊 I use DeAtremenis which is permanent once dry. Normal fountain pen ink won’t cut it… even when it’s dry…
Very nice. Thanks
Thank you very much. Thanks for tuning in.
Good tips, will try out. Thks👍
Have fun trying! Remember one piece shadow is easy if you design it upfront!
Incredible how much you achieved in 15 minutes. I've subscribed. Your content looks great. Thank you for such an informative video. 🙌🙌
Welcome aboard! Thanks for tuning in and feedback!!😀
Whee very nice sketch and paint! Great Technique and one I am glad for learning this as I am just starting my painting journey, Thanks for sharing, Be safe in 2021 (We made it so far) Its a Subscribe here -- look forward to learning from You!
Happy new year! Aren’t we glad to get out of 2020? So here’s to an art filled 2021!!
Great video. I subscribed. I am very new. I recently got the desire to sketch. the only supplies I have at this point are pencils and a sketchbook. I hope to sketch and use watercolors. Could you tell me the name of the pen and the size nib on it? Thank you
Hi hi. I this video I used the Twisbi Medium. However, my go to is Sailor Fude Nib. I think most important is to get the brand of watercolor right, I suggest Daniel Smith, then Paper, I suggest Stillman and Birn. The rest of the “equipments” anything can do really… 😊
Wowowoowowowowwoow love from india
Thank you!!
Hi, What type of brush are you using? it is like a pen :) I love it
It’s call a “Water Brush” look it up. It’s about US$5 per piece depending on make and quality … 🙏😊
Which fountain pen are you using and subsequent coloring tools? Also your paper? I'm an architect and loved your quick sketch/ render .👍👏
Hi hi. I use TWISBI fountain pen here although my go to is Sailor Fude Nib fountain pen. Normally my sketchbook is Stillman and Birn Alpha or Beta but I occasionally use Fabriano Cold or Hot Press papers, recently experimented with Bao Hong which is Ok. Brushes are Escoda for my more serious works but I use all sorts of brands. 🙏😊Hope it helps!! I have a lot of architectural friends in Singapore here who are keen sketchers!! 😊
Thnks..I have a friend too in singapore, an architect was earlier with Oakwood now on his own.
If he is an urban sketcher in singapore, I’d probably know him. It’s a small community here… 😊
@@WheeTeck.. no, he's not into sketching.
Ah okie 🤣
What paper you used here? Awesome video. New subscriber here
Hello thanks for tuning in! The paper I used here is Hahnemuhle sketchbook. German I believe.
@@WheeTeck wow lol. What a coincidence I just received the hahnemuhle A6 size sketchbook. I’m glad now I see this paper is good 👍🏻 thank you.
By the way, what black ink you used on the fountain pen to do the sketch?
@@qiqerod ah you have top of the line sketchbook too! For ink I use archival de atrementis black.
Fantastic Video...
... background (noise) music
Not so much.
Thank you for the feedback! I was over zealous with the music unfortunately. Thanks for tuning in !! 🙏😊
This was absolutely awesome !! Have you ever made a video about what fountain pen you use and recommend ? :) So far I've been using micron pens but I feel that they don't flow as easily as I'd like for this type of sketches. Thank you !
I would recommend TWISBI fountain pens like the one here so my all time favorite Sailor Fude Nib. I will put a link to the video. ruclips.net/video/aihfkQXrRQQ/видео.html
First timer and I so want to be able to apply this style to my art. I love your style, ability to convey your style, and so on. But...the music totally put me off. I’m going to look into your other videos, I really hope for the best, at least for me. Thanks, I like what I’ve seen. Robin
Hey thanks for the feedback! I have received similar feedbacks on music so been cutting down on it! 😊 still leaning how to make better videos haha! Cheers!! (If you check out my new videos hopefully the music doesn’t get in the way anymore...)
I totally agree...
I love this video he does so well, but the background music (noise) was annoying.
Thank you for this video. I subscribed to our channel and will check more of your videos. Great details.
