I've been an artist since I was able to hold an ink pen... I have never, EVER, seen someone both explain composition and illustrate a flawless lesson in the art of simplicity at the same time... You truly have a gift for teaching, whether you know that or not... Thank you...
Thank you for sharing these composition tricks. I only knew about the rule of thirds and the Golden Spiral, but I’d never heard of the L, S and pyramid compositions. Thanks! 😊
Brilliant and so helpful! From being a passionate photographer to a focus-lacking painter I now see what is going wrong. I love everything I see and find it really difficult to narrow it down to a composition so as a photographer I am prolific (digital was a blessing) but that doesn't translate into my paintings because I try to paint absolutely everything. Time to focus. Once again that little tutorial hit the 'light switch' 💡 Thank you!
Toby thank you so much for the Focal Pt video! It was very simple yet informative! I am an artist of fifty years and I have learned instinctively what makes a good composition..But I am getting ready to teach a class on composition and this was so helpful. Thanks for sharing!
Finally, I found this video 😭 I really want to learn about composition but I didn't get it from another video. But this video explain the whole question that I want to know!! You really a good teacher!❤
Another great way of showing how to do it. It's not enough to read about it, when you see it explained and demonstrated that just makes it "CLICK". Thank you for sharing your talent with us, for always upping our game too!
I went to art school too. There are a lot of really bad art schools. I really didn't learn anything. And most art schools they kind of already expect you to know everything how to draw. That's why you submit a portfolio. And if you're not good enough, they don't accept you. It doesn't matter if it's a cheap school or an expensive school. And expensive school is just about connections to the industry and job boards to help you get a job. But it's pretty much the same. They don't really teach you very much except maybe like how to use 3D softwares and stuff like that. Well I shouldn't say they don't teach you like the really good schools. Do teach you a lot but it's like $200,000 and it's not really worth paying that when you can learn. Basically for like everything you need from online courses that would maybe cost you $1,000
Just discovered your channel. Subscribed immediately. Learned more in 7 minutes watching this lesson than I have in 7 months of practicing on my own( I’m a newbie, but a dedicated one.) Thank you, Toby🙏, I’ll get caught up and watch what you’ve offered so far, while eagerly awaiting more! I’m greedy, what can I say…
This is by far the BEST video out there on composition. You broke it down so simply, explained visually and just made this very complex subject a breeze for the mind! thank you so much for sharing. Brilliant teacher.
Very helpful! I tend to use a couple more than others, rather instinctively and coming out of my photography background. This was a great breakdown of what the options are and your examples of possible subjects was hugely helpful as well, thanks for putting it all out so clearly and simply. I have heard of another option referred to as the “smile”, a sort of wide U shape, I use that as well. So glad I found your channel!

Thank you so much! New sub!
Thanks for subbing!
Thank you for this video. Is it true that we could also put the triangle one upside down? I think a face portret is more like an upside down triangle?
I'm sure you could yes!
FA-SCI-NA-TING :-o
Sir this is very concise and helpful! Also what ink pen are you using?
You might find it on the supplies link ☺️🖇️
Can you explain why these focal points are considered important?
A focal point provides a point of interest
Hi Toby, love trying to draw with fountain pen, however, frustrating whenever I go to use it is dried and will not work. Any ideas?
It may be the ink isn't suitable - try this post www.urbansketch.co.uk/blog/fountain-pens-and-ink-which-to-use-and-why
❤
Cheers.
Pleasure
What confuses me is if I want to draw something do I think which rule shall I apply how do you know which rule you need untill youve drawn it
Imagine what you want it to look like, try things out, do thumbnails
❤
👍🙏👍
Thank to Edgar Payne
Had to look him up, be he is a rather fantastic landscape artist!
@TobySketchLoose yes, but the you can see a lot of examples of form of composition ligue S, O Triangle, Balance, Steelyard, Cross, Group... Today I watched a very good video of "Draw with Chris" Composition Lessons #3. All the best.

A tree 🌳
This was great, but I could do without the distraction of the flapping hands, which detract, rather than enhance.
Ah, to much caffeine
The Fibonacci explanation is incorrect.
Apologies 😔
This is very helpful. Thank you.
