Grant Hill, MJ, Penny... all those guys were also cerebral and utilized an economy of motion and decisiveness that complemented their physical abilities. Dominique Wilkins, arguably was at least as athletic as MJ, but didn't quite match him on the intangibles.

Ppl talk about penny's vision, handle, athleticism. But i think one thing that Penny had that was unique was his soft touch in the post & footwork. They are one handed semi-hook shots that was really hard to stop. And occasionally penny will whip out moves based on the moment. Its not a go to move like harden's side step that he uses multiple times in game and put in hours of practice. That whole half spin step back penny did just happened and looked so smooth. That post move he did on pippen at 2:00 was a spin to a different hand then through the legs and totally faked out pip. Its like pip never seen penny use the move or have scouting reports on the move. Penny made it up in the spur of the moment that is why it is so unstoppable.

I think SGA is a new age version of Penny.
      Both combo guards at 6'7".
Because counting/box score stats have gotten so far out of hand with the rule changes and differences in the style of how offenses are run, it wouldn't be fair to strictly compare them statistically. Instead we will have to take those numbers into consideration while also going off of what we've witnessed as fans.
To me, SGA is the more natural scorer and is out of position playing point guard for OKC. He would be better suited as the shooting guard however positions are basically irrelevant in today's NBA. SGA is incredibly crafty especially when he gets into the paint as he slithers his way into an easy look at the cup. I give him the advantage as a scorer.
Penny on the other hand, is more of a natural playmaker and creator for others so I think he was properly positioned at the point during his peak. He isn't as effective as a face up scorer starting from the 3 point line like SGA but he is an even better post scorer. The post is where Penny thrives and outside of fast breaks, this is where Penny gets the bulk of his buckets (well, that and the line). They both are decent three point shooters who prefer to get closer to the hoop but you can't leave them completely open otherwise they make you pay. Anfernee has terrible 3pt% during the regular season but always took it to the next level in the playoffs. If he played in today's era obviously he would have practiced that much more seriously and his % would look better. They are both incredible at getting to the line but again the era makes the stats deceiving. I think SGA would have just a small advantage here. Very small.
SGA definitely has the better reputation as a defender than Penny did at his prime but the game has changed so significantly that it's not hard to believe Penny would be a very good defender in today's NBA. I imagine that Anfernee would utilize his versatility and his skills as a ball hawk (he always was amongst the leaders in steals during his prime). Part of what hurt Penny was that he was often stuck guarding super quick guys that were 6'3" or smaller which at the height of 6'7" gives him the advantage in many situations but makes it incredibly hard to keep in front of them in the open court. He would benefit from the fact that defense isn't strictly man to man and he could use his versatility to switch onto the taller wings. I still will give SGA the advantage for this category until proven otherwise (if only).
Overall, SGA is one of the best if not THE best guard (again, positions are basically irrelevant) in the Association. This is similar to how Anfernee was during his two season peak (before injuries started zapping him of his explosiveness). They are the same size and although Penny was more athletic/explosive, SGA has more ways to score and better defensive effort. Not many players have matched Penny's court vision but similar to Penny, SGA is the lead play maker for a top offensive team and puts his team on his shoulders when they need him to take over.
It would have been amazing to see them compete against each other but we'll have to settle for barbershop arguments.
Considering this is a video highlighting Penny, I have a hunch he will get the majority of the love but I'll ask anyway, who do you think would be the better player if SGA went up against 24 year old Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway?

When MJ was out of the NBA for almost 2 Seasons, Penny became my favorite player. Wore the black & white Penny Nike Air Ups playing PAL basketball. Loved those and the Latrell Sprewell CONS in 95-96. Also the black Air Pippens were great in 96-97.

90’s NBA legend 🔥 if it weren’t for injuries he was definitely on his way to a hall of fame career. What really messed him up I believe was rushing back to soon from injury during the 96-97 season. He wasn’t the same after that. Still a legend and had one of the best Nike ad campaigns after MJ in the 90’s 🔥
