As a retired semi senior citizen play the game of basketball as a guard, who has seen NBA since the 60s, I can say that Penny Hardaway should go down in history and even the Hall of Fame regardless of his show coming as one of the best guards ever in the NBA. Penny Hardaway in my mind, was So good, in his prime, was definitely on the level of any guard and the NBA. The Orlando Magic was so good they were almost Unstoppable. During that time when Shaquille O'Neal join the Orlando Magic his inability to increase his foul shooting and developing a high percentage shooting ability within 15 ft was probably the only reason why they did not go further. To add to injury the media tried to create problems between these two players relationship.
When a documentary makes you tear up with emotion, inspiration, and pride for the people involved that's a good documentary. Thank you for this content. Much love, and light to you Penny for being such a bright spirit.

Well after all that lobbying to get Penny for ORL, Shaq left him for Hollywood. There wasn't even a trade to at least send some help for Penny like draft picks as far as I know.
@@aliceandcat2228 bro he realized he couldn’t get it done with him bc of the injuries can you blame him, then jerry west was in his ear talm bout Kobe already
@@timhdz Penny's knee injury happened in 1997 season. Shaq left in 96. And Shaq admitted after he retired that the reason he left ORL was mostly because of Hollywood opportunities like his movies and music. Of course the reason he gave when he was playing was because ORL did not offer him a contract fast enough to prevent people from criticizing on what would be seen as a selfish move on his side. They also made it in the finals in 95 with Penny playing 77 games with 20ppg at 50%FG. I would not call that injury plague yet. Lol
@@aliceandcat2228 • Shaq wanted the max that he rightfully deserved and Orlando was too cheap to give him one. What was he supposed to do when he gets offered a 7yr/$120M contract by LA? Turn it down and wait for the Magic to make you their minds? Penny was a better fit for Orlando than C-Webb. Shaq did them a solid.
@@skah80 According to Pat Williams the GM of ORL that time, they match LAL offer to Shaq. But Shaq still choose LAL. So it's not like they did not try. ORL team also was a loaded and a championship team in 96 while LAL pretty much almost kick everyone out in the team to clear cap room and had to rebuild the roster. That and ORL was the only team to defeat CHI with Jordan since DET in a full playoff series. So in terms of winning, ORL had the pieces to challenge CHI and the ones who would have reigned in the East right after Jordan. So Shaqs choice for the same money is stay in ORL ready to win or join a rebuilding LAL at that time.
My favorite player back in the day. Begged my mom for a Orlando Magic starter jacket. She got it for me for Christmas. Unwrapping that gift on Christmas day is one of my best memories as a kid. Funny enough, someone just sent me this video and coincidence I'm wearing his jersey right now.
No doubt in my mind if he had stayed healthy he would have become a legend, up there with Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, Olajuwan, etc. in top 10 all time conversations.
Johnny Davis jr Lens Bias was supposed to be the dude to challenge Jordan and continue the Celtics’ dominance after Bird. It’s really sad he did after the draft

He had Scottie Pippen's body, but the skill and shooting of a PURE guard. You don't see that many 6'7 point-guards/shooting-guards, with LONG arms, and he was one of the best.
@@cocopops8441 no that's not true... technically a doctor told tmac in high school he would never play pro ball... he was just fortunate to make it as long as he did.
His glory days are still vivid in my memory. Wow! He was so famous back then. Him, grant hill, kevin garnett, iverson, kemp.. these guys are the very reason i played basketball. Made me teary right now.
One of my top 3 favorite players growing up. He had Jordan’s scoring ability and athleticism with Magic Johnson’s court vision and size. First ballot Hall of Famer if he stays healthy.
Lol I like Penny but Mike was a different caliber athlete, especially before 93, and he won 10 scoring titles for a reason. Penny peak probably would've been 25 points, 9 assists and 6 boards a game wich is first ballot worthy
He was something. Everybody says he is no Jordan but who knows. He dunks like Jordan, he passes like Magic. He could be better. If not, Jordan would bring the best out of him within the competition. Jordan would drag him, push him to be the best. What a rivalry we could have seen.
@Domini478 he just said that he had MJ scoring ability and athleticism. Meaning he could light up the scoring board and take flight and dunk on some shit. He didn't say he was better than mj. Popularity wise at one point he was second to MJ in super star category besides Shaq

Penny is one of my favorite players growing up. I know he is a great player but wow, I never thought he is also such a good person. His story is inspiring.
Penny Hardaway is one of my favorite players. I grew up watching him and many times I'd rock his Orlando Magic black jersey when playing pick-up with my friends. So many fun memories! Thank you Penny and God bless you!
A 6'7 ATHLETIC point guard who could shoot, score, drive, PASS. His body unfortunately failed him within the NBA, but when healthy he was a top 5 player for those few peak years. Would have been in the HOF & a champion. Imagine what he & Shaq could have done & almost did! So happy to see him rediscover his calling & regain the love for basketball/coaching
His body didn't fail him. His injuries later on his career could have been avoided. What happened to Penny was that he had a cartilage tear on his left knee in the beginning of the 96-97 season, and had surgery that season (see 1st link). After he had the surgery Penny was back on the court again within 2 1/2 weeks (see 2nd link). Penny's knee was not going to fully heal within 2 1/2 weeks, so Penny ended up playing 59 games in the 96-97 season with a knee that wasn't 100% after the surgery. In the 97-98 season he tore his cartilage again and his left knee was forever weakened (see LA times link). Had Orlando allowed Penny's knee to fully heal the first time he tore his cartilage, he would have been 100% healthy for the 97-98 season, and probably would have beaten Chicago. www.orlandosentinel.com/news/os-xpm-1996-11-16-9611151751-story.html www.orlandosentinel.com/news/os-xpm-1996-11-18-9611170740-story.html www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1997-dec-10-sp-62689-story.html
@owainkanaway8345 This is similar to why Andrew Toney's career was cut short in Philadelphia. The team didn't believe that he had an issue with his foot and basically made him play on it. The wear and tear forced him to retire at 29.
I thought I loved Penny for his NBA abilities. Nah Penny it’s way passed that. What you’ve done for these kids is priceless champ. You are and always will be a champion. God bless you bro. ❤️💯🙏🏾🤝
Penny's life is such an inspiring story. He was a star with all the fame, he was at the top then lost it all. I think only Penny himself knows what that feels like. Then Lester Middle School saved him just as he saved the school and those kids. After being on the top of the world, went through depression and doubts, he came back to his roots and gave back to his community. Some media might portray Penny as a disappointment, but life isn't about that. Life is about journey through different stages and realize your own purposes. I'm just a fan growing up watching him play, but I'd like to think that by helping and providing guidance to those kids in need, Penny found true happiness.
Really digging that song at the end. I took the harder way..... yo Penny Hardaway. That defines who he is as a person. He gave back to his community and gave Memphis hope. What an awesome heart felt documentary. Enjoyed every second of it. One of my fav players in the 90s.

Penny Hardaway was my favourite player when I was a teenager in the mid 90s. Tall, Skilled, quick, explosive and a very cerebral player, to me one of the very best, FOREVER.
Penny was my favourite player as a 12 year old who loved to ball. His combination of silky smooth ball control, clutch shooting and brutal force driving to the bucket made me an instant fan. It's a pity he, Shaq and the Magic couldn't overcome Hakeem and Clyde for that 95 title.
Really glad i watched this. Always loved watching Penny play and knowing now where he came from, and how much he has given back is truly special. You deserve everything you have Penny! Your a great coach and a great man! Keep it going.

NBA is just a beginning of his real journey...... I'm still trying to figure out my life... I'm happy for him that he figure it out his life.... My favorite player in the 90s
A truly unique basketball player.. Extremely high basketball IQ --- with very strong presence on the court at all times.. Always enjoyed watching him play.. A legitimate 6' 7" point guard with an extremely dynamic skill set.. Consistently effective on both the offensive & defensive ends of the court.. He played on another level compared to most NBA players; even players who were NBA All-Stars.. Always very calm and poised with a consistent desire to win.. No doubt about it.. Perennial All-NBA selection until his knee problems began to rob him of his normal dominance on the court; which of course, was absolutely horrible to witness for ANY true basketball fan.. Life sho'nuff ain't fair.. Barring the career ending injuries, he's an automatic first ballot Hall of Famer.. No questions asked.. Penny, thanx so much for the wonderful memories Bro.. Mos'def keep up the good work in Memphis!! Your dedication and contributions to the game of basketball will NEVER be forgotten.. Word..
Thanks so much for this video who ever put it together, I fell in love with basketball when I started to follow Penny Hardaway, when Penny was traded to Orlando that became my team, I did not care about Jordan or any other player I just want to see play Orlando because that was like good music for me, I got sad when he got injured and never recover on my book He is a Hall of Fame, still today's day in not another point guard like Penny, the explosive way, the basket ball IQ I don't see another point guard like him. Bless for what you keep achieving out side the court and for your town.
I started to watch NBA during 1996/97 and Penny was my first favourite player by sort of a chronological order. I remember perfectly during that year the echo of his 1994-95 and 1995-96 campaigns was huge, despite he sadly started to deal with injuries and having a lower impact (the playoffs series against Miami was the swan song). I'm a Lakers fan and Kob of course is my idol, but Penny still today is my ideal player if I had to create someone...he was a cocktail between Magic and Kobe. A 6'7 PG with instant quickness and handles, a perimeter player able to play three positions and having an amazing post game. He had mid-range too. And of course his main pros: his ability to pass, his taste for over-emphasizing big plays and no look passes, his natural flair, smoothness, elegance, his natural IQ for the game. The guy was the most spectacular at the time and the most wanted by media and brands. Sadly everything derailed...I hope someday he gets the HoF, not only for his prime years, but also cause his impact on BB culture and even "pop" culture were huge at the time...

Glad Penny found his real calling after the NBA.
Same God bless
Hooping was his real calling he was a better player then coach...for a minute he was a top 5 player in the league
Penny the BEST!!!
Yes.
I agree
When a documentary makes you tear up with emotion, inspiration, and pride for the people involved that's a good documentary. Thank you for this content. Much love, and light to you Penny for being such a bright spirit.
Penny is a legend in my book.. one of the best nba player and to go back home and show love to his friend and helping shows how real and loyal he is.. #respect #1❤
“Penny Hardaway you don’t owe me nothing, I owe you”-Shaq
😭😭😭😭
Same here, as a Mexican American i always admired him as a kid. Always wanted his shoes but could never afford them as a kid.
No doubt in my mind if he had stayed healthy he would have become a legend, up there with Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, Olajuwan, etc. in top 10 all time conversations.
Robb Noble I truly agree there are a lot players that could have had great careers Lynn bias etc it’s a extremely long list things happen
He is still a legend!
Johnny Davis jr Lens Bias was supposed to be the dude to challenge Jordan and continue the Celtics’ dominance after Bird. It’s really sad he did after the draft
Robb Noble well that will ever be answered
EASILY.
Him & Shaq got me into basketball. Living legends.superb athlete, character, and a role model
Humility even after all the stardom. Wow profound & 😢😢😢 every tear shed is beautiful
I never been to Memphis, Tennessee but this made me want to visit. Been a fan of Penny since I was a kid growing up.
You don't want to visit here, it's a shit hole.
Hakeem Olajuwan is the only reason Penny doesn't have a ring. They were just too experienced.
@@heatherphillips5575 Its not a shit hole to the ppl that live there bro! I grew up outside the city and I know living there wasn't ideal but its home. So visit if you want to, take in the pride and history of the city.
A very special place to be !
Memphis (901) is a tough place….
He had Scottie Pippen's body, but the skill and shooting of a PURE guard.
You don't see that many 6'7 point-guards/shooting-guards, with LONG arms, and he was one of the best.
No him and Scottie where to different ball players numnuts
Well said !
@@goodgame7666He said Piippen's BODY, not playing style 😂
Reading comprehension is a valuable skill.
Just imagine what would’ve been if Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway never had injuries
TMac as well
@@shawnwilson330 tmacs injury’s came at the end of his prime
@@cocopops8441 no that's not true... technically a doctor told tmac in high school he would never play pro ball... he was just fortunate to make it as long as he did.
U gotdam right
EXACTLY MAN GRANT IS MY FAVORITE ALL TIME HE MIGHT BE TOP 10 IF IT WEREN'T FOR THAT ANKLE INJURY
His glory days are still vivid in my memory. Wow! He was so famous back then. Him, grant hill, kevin garnett, iverson, kemp.. these guys are the very reason i played basketball. Made me teary right now.
#RealTalk
As a Suns fan, Penny we loved you man and still do. Loved seeing you play in PHX. God bless!
Fuck yeah dude
@@bigpoppa6658 Tracy macgrady too
@@rezap5331 we did saw a rivalry it just didn't last long. Remember MJ was on his way out the door but we did see them in the Simi finals and the 96 playoffs and and regular season games from 96,97 and 98
Much respects to Penny when I was kid he was my favorite player ! This Documentary was much needed. Shining a light on these greats we should never forget about
What an inspirational human, such humility and grace. God surely smiles on him
Memphis representative here to tell you Penny was the Truth!!!
I remember meeting him at a driving range on Summer ave when I was 13. From that day I was a huge Penny fan. Still wear his college jersey to this day
What a great documentary! Today's kids can not imagine how big Penny was in the 90s.
I agree Mr Huangi
I can't imagine that bus ride home for Nick Anderson.
Penny is a basketball icon and it should be a movie made off of his life it's truly a love&basketball story.
Penny is the reason why I started to watch basketball he is one of the best to ever play the game
“One” of the best! Not the best, but most definitely one of the best!
@@chgofirefighter tf are you doing he said that?
One of my favorite player of all time...One true phenomenon at the time...No one was playing like that before the guy came into the league. And he's got the sickest shoes ever apart from AJ. He was more than just a basketball super star, he was a pop culture icon at the time, just like MJ...
Hes a natural at coaching, gifted at reaching the kids, so happy for him, awesome.
Penny is one of my favorite players growing up. I know he is a great player but wow, I never thought he is also such a good person. His story is inspiring.
Always respected Penny's game now I respect the man . What a ball player , what a friend ... Thank you Penny Hardaway .

Correct
@owainkanaway8345 This is similar to why Andrew Toney's career was cut short in Philadelphia. The team didn't believe that he had an issue with his foot and basically made him play on it. The wear and tear forced him to retire at 29.
I thought I loved Penny for his NBA abilities. Nah Penny it’s way passed that. What you’ve done for these kids is priceless champ. You are and always will be a champion. God bless you bro. ❤️💯🙏🏾🤝
One word to explain this DOC. Is AMAZING. PENNY YOU HAVE GIVEN SO MANY BLESSINGS OUT AND CHANGED SO MANY LIVES.. THAT IS YOUR LEGACY.
Special guy , the world needs more like him .
💯🙏🏼
Sounds like a movie
Really digging that song at the end. I took the harder way..... yo Penny Hardaway. That defines who he is as a person. He gave back to his community and gave Memphis hope. What an awesome heart felt documentary. Enjoyed every second of it. One of my fav players in the 90s.
Man this just made me cry like a baby 😂 amazing documentary 👏 Penny was my fav player back in 93-94, what a legacy 👊
PENNY WAS A BEAST!!!! I went to his basketball camp in Memphis as a teenager in 1996 & 1997.
Shaq and Penny was such an amazing duo! Man I miss that era.
Penny was the one the best! Injury kept him from reaching his peak- but trust me- Penny was destined to be an epic type player!!! I loved him then, I love him now!!!
Great Documentary!!! It will truly come full circle when Penny coaches Memphis to a national championship!!!🏆I won’t be able to contain myself so I can imagine how Penny will feel. From his insane talent at Memphis high school and college to a blossoming star in the NBA...He should have some championships, mvp’s, and the HOF on his resume if not for that knee blow. My favorite player ever...Blessings & Favor 4 U Penny!!!
If he wins one with Memphis he should come back to otown and win one for the Magic. City loves him here still. #Legend

Growing up, Penny was my favorite player at the time from 95-96 he was humble and has the total package to almost close to MJ which was at the GOD level. Penny was my #1 star when I discovered NBA for myself in '96. Have been a fan since.
Penny Hardaway was my favourite player when I was a teenager in the mid 90s. Tall, Skilled, quick, explosive and a very cerebral player, to me one of the very best, FOREVER.

Penny I'm so happy for you ( and sorry for your loss RIP D ) not just for the coaching success but finding another passion in life. I have not found my 1st yet I mean I have a daughter and if I could go sign my life away knowing my daughter would be set for life i would do it in a heartbeat, but sadly life not that fair and it hurts but I accept that my daughter lives with her brother and baby mom's and step dad . I wish I could be that guy that stepped up and did it different but the truth is i was struggling with my demons then and till this day .it's an everlasting battle but I'm not giving up daughter or the people that love me however few.

I watched it 4 times! It is awesome.😊
Penny's legacy he brought to the court will never be forgotten!
My G.O.A.T! Penny makes me want to play basketball more. up to this day I still have his shoes and jersey!
The strength of love by Penny Hardaway's capability is above and beyond! And a great example for all of us to be and do in our own life.
Big Penny fan growing up as a kid I had a Black Orlando Penny Jersey & Shaq in Orlando poster bringing down the rim. Great player, Great person. Thanks for sharing this Doc.
