Playing alongside the legendary Michael Jordan on the Chicago Bulls, Longley and his teammates were surrounded by a constant frenzy as they won three consecutive NBA championships.
But when the team disbanded in 1998, Longley was unable to replicate the highs of those Chicago years and he retired due to injury three years later.
Returning to Australia, he struggled to adjust to life outside professional sport but eventually found purpose again as an assistant coach with the Australian national team, the Boomers.

I had season tickets for the 95 season .. I was also really sick and going through chemo for the first time .. I had got to the point where I thought my time had come and was confined to a wheelchair .. still I made every home game traveling from Springfield , Illinois ( downstate ) ... Every now and then some of the players would give me a nod or a thumbs up ... except for Luc .. EVERY single game he came over and talked to me , asked how I was doing and if I needed anything .. this wasn't a few seconds canned convo .. He really cared about what was going on with me .. I never had the chance to tell him thanks but Luc if your reading this please know ... it meant the world to me and as you can see .. I made it :) .. Thanks again

100 percent. Ppl think it was Jordan, Scottie and a bunch of ppl just making up numbers. Luc was one of the most agile and intelligent big men in the L then, incredible passer for a 5, Kukoc was one of the purest shooters in the L, BJ was an exceptional PG, Grant was an elite defender. A very complete team, and Jordan would have the same amount of rings as Reggie Miller if it wasn't for his team mates and coaches. Simple facts.
This is the only time I ever watched basketball. The Bulls dominated. WGN was on cable TV. We watched the Bulls ALL THE TIME.
Kukoc is Croatian as me. He was at the time European MVP,won everything in Europe as a main role player as MJ was in NBA. Shot,threes,assists,driblle,playmaking,everything except no.5. Real team player. But in NBA they weighted him and put him on the bench.

Thats a 100% fact. Was born in 82' and was in elementary school watching the bulls dominate. I vividly remember Luc to this day banging in the paint like an absolute monster with impossible coordination at 7'2" lol. MJ was who i tried to emulate shooting and ill remember Luc till the day i die.
4M views and counting for this part that was missing in the Last Dance. Hall of Famers MJ, Scottie and Steve sat down to pay their tribute to Luc's contribution to the game. A separate documentary for yourself out of not being a part of the Last Dance. This is a blessing in disguise Luc. Good thing is that we now have social media and is bigger than the traditional media.

I think Luc being left out of The Last Dance was a blessing in disguise…because now his story has come out and I think we would have seen “less” of it if it was in The Last Dance. Luc mattered and im so happy for him.
Yes - great observation Ven. This chapter is a more complete telling of Luc's story than would have happened in the original documentary. And the additional interviews with Scottie Pippen, Phil Jackson, Steve Kerr, and MJ add a lot, and would not have happened if Luc hadn't been mostly left out of TLD.

Naw Jordan did it all by himself!!! He defended Karl Malone, and Shawn Kemp!!! He battled for all the rebounds and he got all the assist and points! He didn’t have no teammates and they certainly didn’t hit plenty of shots for him!!

I used to agree with you and though fowl play from tptb may have been involved... i think part of the reason mj might be the best is because the mindset aspect... perhaps of lbj had the mentality of mj he'd be 7-2 or undefeated in finals.
@@Dallazification So, it's funny. I've been watching MJ since I was a kid and have observed the marketing of MJ for years as an adult. At this point, I'm so immunized to MJ propaganda that my mind just sort of filters it out. It will almost be like I didn't even see it. I watched the whole _The Last Dance_ series. But I started to realize that I often could barely remember what was in it. 1) Because a lot of it was just repackaged old information. And 2) because I know the true and/or whole story behind the things in the doc, so I was fully aware that the doc is propaganda and misrepresenting events, therefore my mind just filtered a lot of it out as I watched.
So it didn't change my opinion of MJ at all basketballwise. But one thing I did learn from the doc is how funny Jordan is. I didn't know that about him. I've heard Jordan call himself funny before and seen a couple of comical quotes, but that was about it. MJ says he doesn't show his humor in public for fear that he might say something that would hurt his marketing. But the dude is apparently hilarious.

From your comment, I'm wondering if it is similar to mine. You say you know the true story behind the events in the documentary, if you don't mind, would you share that with me? I'm also wondering if what you know is what I've suspected. I watched the NBA back then, but not every game, every team, I was sort of a casual fan, with a favorite player, and usually rooting for underdogs, or just a good game. LOL But I did follow enough, and do enough research, looking up videos and statistics to form my own opinions, if that makes sense. The more I find out, the more I think my opinions are mostly correct. But I am always willing to learn more. If you decide to answer my questions, I appreciate it very much, if not, I understand, life can be busy.
@@mattlenox4361 It would be hard to cite a specific example of knowing the whole story from _The Last Dance_ since I remember so little of it. But if I recall correctly, the doc says Jordan started weight training to get extra muscle to deal with the Bad Boy Pistons' hard fouls, and suggests this is what allowed him to beat them in 1991. But that's not even close to the full story. The real story is that Jordan threatened to retire if the Pistons beat his team again, then the league literally changed it's rules that year so the Pistons couldn't play that style anymore. The Pistons were also so old and decimated with injuries that they would have lost anyway, but the officiating was egregiously lopsided to favor Jordan's team just to make it worse. The league basically removed the Bad Boy Pistons and sent a message. To make it seem like it was because Jordan lifted weights is laughable.
That's the kind of stuff I mean. Jordan was the first of his kind marketingwise and the NBA made sure to capitalize off him to the fullest. He was always put in the best position and promoted as a superhero as much(if not moreso) than a basketball player. He was certainly a great player, but he was a marketing phenomenon the likes of which had never been seen before and probably isn't possible to replicate again under today's conditions.
I was extremely fortunate to sit next to Luc on a 2 hour flight just at the end of his career. As a Chicagoan, I recognized him immediately and we began to talk. He could have been a bit grumpy because his flight was cancelled and he had to take a middle seat, not in first class (super extended legroom though), his ankles were giving him problems and it was the end of his career, but instead he was completely upbeat and just a happy person inside. We had a great conversation, talking many of the topics in this doc, and I can say confidently that Luc is a great guy and a great human being. His sense of humor is even better than we get to see in the documentary, though the bit about the Russian dolls gives a glimpse. He would be a great friend. Easy to see (in retrospect) why he fit chemistry-wise with the Bulls, along with Steve Kerr, Judd Buechler, and the other non-big 3.

This documentary made me cry. I grew up watching the Bulls. I always loved Luc and to see his struggles in life and basketball I can really relate. I played basketball several times a week and blew my knee out when I was 38 years old. It changed my life. I couldn’t play the game I loved so much after the injury and I couldn’t find my purpose. I really identified with Luc there and to see him being hurt about being left off The Last Dance made me feel bad for him. But Michael Jordan giving that interview about Luc was VERY kind and I’m sure made him feel better.

This documentary transcended basketball; taking in Luc’s mental health struggles post retirement really hit home with how mental health is a real issue especially among Australian men. They do an hour or two with each player and they talk about a range of players , so the one on Steve Kerr and other players from that team were all talked about during those interview...and thats how they do them.and he never went back poor? he had 30 plus million still coming and more.

Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls franchise should have included Luc Longley and his story into the original series in the first place. Luc deserves a bit of recognition and for them to shoe horn a series exclusively for him after the initial series aired. They have the funding and facilities to get Luc's side of the story as well. But clearly chose not to. To me it seems very disrespectful.
As an avid Bulls fan, Phil Jackson , & that whole 90,s dynasty, I was very pleased with “The Last Dance”. And now having seen this, am almost glad Luc was left out, though clearly he deserved the acalades. Perhaps had he not been left out, we would not have gotten to see this exclusive glimpse of this gentle giant. This is very heartwarming. Not only do I appreciate his basketball talent that contributed to 3 of the Bulls 6 titles, but now I appreciate the man, and this glimpse of his unique and humble heart. Thank you for this documentary, and yes it very much warrants being an episode of “The Last Dance”.
Well said! As a kid growing up in the 90's, it never occurred to me that these are real people. You tend to think of them as super-heroes in a way. I appreciate being able to see the human side of these guys.

I remember seeing Luc running the floor and jamming in highlights when he was in MIN. I was thrilled when I heard we had gotten him in 1995 and felt both he and Wennington flanked by Parish, Buddah, Salley and others were a fine bunch at center. Suitable replacements for Cartwright.
I was born in 87 & I’m a diehard Knicks fan from NY.. I hope Luc realizes how well known he was to kids growing up in the 90’s.. Everybody in my class (even kids who just knew the Bulls because it was cool, like the Cowboys back then) knew Luc Longley was the Starting Center for the Bulls. He was a household name around the country for sports fans. As much as I hated the Bulls growing up, I respect the hell out of them now..

U gotta remember the documentary was published during Covid n Luke was all the way in Australia n probably not connected nor as he says wanted to even be around Basketball anymore. Everyone else that was in the Documentary was in the US. Now if Luke was loving in the US n was still connected with the guys in sure he would have been in the series but he wasn't even around. What I don't get was the fact he wasn't even contacted at least.
Yah it does, cuz they only featured Mike, Scotty, and Rodman, plus some coaches/executives. They would have first told us a lot more about Horace Grant, Paxton and BJ Armstrong before they ever got around to talking about Luc Longley. And none of what you said about Longley is true as far as his fame. He was known as a minor figure on the Chicago Bulls, absolutely no one knew him before he joined the Bulls, and he was probably the 8th or 9th best known player on that Bulls team. His stats are actually surprisingly good, for how little attention was paid to him during the second Bulls run of championships.....if you're from Australia, you know him. If you're an American who watched Michael in the 90s, you just think of Luc as another one of those tall centers they had like Cartwright, until maybe you research his stats and find out he was a little better than you remember.
Got to the end part where Luc was a little miffed about not getting any play in the docu....well he must have known since he wasn't interviewed there wasn't going to be much, but yah, ideally the docu would have had more info on more players, you're right about that part of it. They heavily focused on Mike, and then there was a bit on Scotty and Rodman, the main stars of the Last Dance season of 98. This was the Mike Jordan version of the Bulls years, the greatest player who's ever existed.

Being a native Chicagoan and Bulls fan, I want to thank you for putting this together for Luc and his family as well as us fans. I loved watching Luc play and was glad he had found happiness again in his life. His story deserved to be told and you did a great job with it.

I'm so glad MJ did a full thirty minute interview dedicated to Luc.
He was scared of what the white media would do if he didn't respond. Note he hasn't said a word of apology to Pippen, Grant, Isiah, Payton, Drexler, and all the other of his brothers he shat on in the documentary. He KNOWS the white media will handle them for him. But, Luc is one of them and he has to crawl on the ground and grovel so they keep buying his shoes. Sad.

That's very profound. Rarely do you hear athletes say that nowadays. Its all about their airtime, highlights, or stat sheet. To have a teammate like Luc is really rare. Good documentary.

Having a calm , caring presence on the team was a great counter weight to the overwhelming pressure MJ put on EVERYONE. When I saw the house parties with the kids at his house and Kerr talking about laughing and drinking wine during all this pressure I thought thats exactly what they needed to decompress. Wish I had more Luc Longleys in my life

Kerr made it seem like a little vacation and I bet he's not joking! Luc Longley seems really down to Earth, like he's a regular fellow that just happened to be the starting center for the most dominant team in the modern NBA. I bet one could easily chill with Luc.

Luc definitely deserved more in the Last Dance series (Ron Harper too considering he was the starting PG ahead of Steve Kerr for the second three-peat, no mention of Ron here either). That said, the fact that MJ, Phil, Scottie and Steve (especially given his current status) took the time to contribute significantly to this fine documentary about Luc, says a lot and that is some high praise from MJ.
If Ron Harper doesn't have major injury back then, maybe he can't give Jordan a nightmare every game with cavs

The only thing I can respond to about this is that they probably only had so many segments they were to. Jordan was apologetic. The producers focused on the most popular players and unfortunately guys like Luke Longley were the ones who were booted. But thank God they kept this footage so we can finally enjoy it. I never knew anything about the guy, so I’m so glad I got to see this. He truly is a gentle giant. God bless everyone.
I kinda teared up when Jordan said he participated in this documentary because Luc is important to him. Shows that MJ has grown as a person too and can reflect on the contributions others made to his success

Jordan knew the value of his teammates. He's not a selfish person actually. He gave Paxson, Kerr, Scott Burrell, everybody a chance to adhere to their strengths and in doing so help the team. He was a great leader in Alexander's level.

Exactly what part of his story was interesting enough that "needed to be told"? Just a mediocre player, incredibly lucky to play alongside the best player that ever played basketball and had front court sits on the ride. Nothing against him, he seems cool albeit somewhat dull but nothing special about him as a player or a person that needed to be told.

I was a big fan of MJ and that Chicago Bulls era, and also of Toni Kukoč, who is from my country Croatia, so there were plenty of reasons not to miss Bulls games. After the Last Dance I was really surprised that there wasn't a chapter about Luc Longley, he was an important piece of that puzzle. I'm so glad this was put together cause Luc deserved it!
Toni was featured in the documentary but probably not as much as he should have been. At the end of the day Michael was the star so it's obviously going to focus on him because that's what everyone is interested in. But documentaries are also supposed to be thorough.

Same here. They should have mentioned Longley. Also they way they portrayed Toni Kukoc was misleading for people that actually did not closely follow the team back then. Btw he was also not mentioned a single time in this Longley doc, but he was constantly on the photos and video clips...doesn't matter here as it is really about Longley only. Kukoc's role and importance was bigger than what it was portrayed in the LAst Dance. They mainly talked about the entire tensity between him and Pippen+MJ before he joined the team. Instead they made Kerr look bigger than what he was. No disrespect to Kerr, but he says it himself. He is nowadays famous for being the Warriors coach. Much more known than he ever was as a player. So the producers used that to entertain the younger crowd. Kukoc and Longley are probably the "weird" foreigners and too laid back. The producers didn't find them entertaining enough in comparison to Kerr who is a great story teller and famous nowadays. So parts of the Last Dance are really misleading if you use it as your main information source, meaning you did not witness those years yourself back in the days.

The starting centre on the greatest team ever. I grew up in New Zealand watching this Bulls team and loved what Luc bought to the court. He was a part of a group that created memories and moments in sport that will be played long after we are all gone.
I didn’t watch this expecting to shed some tears, but that interview with Jordan at the very end and the things he said, so beautiful and Luc deserved that so much. I think that will bring a lot of closure for him about that part of his life. I’m so glad they made this documentary!
Man I shed a tear during that, but I wish it was face to face. MJ is a billionaire he could’ve flown to Australia to come see him.

One can never praise Phil Jackson enough to make such a diverse group of people and one of the fiercest competitors in all of sports history work together that well. What an absolute genius and empathetic person at the same time.
Plus he done multiple times throughout his career. That’s amazing in itself.

The fact such key huge names participated so much in this doc shows how much they respected Luc to take part like this. Love or hate MJ he waited forever to even do this role for his own doc so says something that he did this for Luc

I read an article a few days ago written by the woman doing the interviews. She never thought she'd ever get MJ on board. He recently turned down a $100M corporate deal and here she was hoping he'd say yes to giving an interview about an overlooked and forgotten- about Bull's player for free... Says a lot about Luc as a man and a former teammate for MJ to say yes to the interview for TV program free of charge

I saw where Jordan's ppl turned down to interview at 1st not telling MJ about it. The ppl making this told Luc he emailed MJ and asked. MJ didn't even take a second and said yes of course he's in.
Him accepting the interview I don’t see it like extraordinary but normal . That’s what the team spirit is about.
People have said a lot of great things about MJ, but I don't think anyone has accused him of being a great person.

luc seems to be a gentle soul. nothing to do with the melanin levels in his skin.
some people are naturally kinder than others.
jordan was a psychopath. that also didnt have anything to do with his skin tone. his psychopathic mindset drove him from zero to becoming the goat. and it cost him a lot of enjoyment of the 3-peat era. when everyone in the team(of all skin tones) was having a good family time with bbq and jolly....he was isolated.

Luc was a great guy to us fan's too! This brings back so many memories, and I have so many cool stories too, LoL! I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. I was there before & after the Dynasty, the Last Dance... I saw them all! The whole city went crazy bc we loved our Bulls! It was electric, just a great time to be alive & in my life. Certainly, it will NEVER be forgotten 🫡

I'm the same age as luc, I remember watching those games religiously! And I've been a bulls fan since '92 , during the the 1992 championship series against Portland! I remember the bulls winning a game and thinking they won the championship, then wondering why they had to play another game until I figured out it was a series and not one game! That shows you my knowledge of professional sports at that time! Didn't take long for me to figure it all out! At the time music was my only release and heavy metal was my favorite, but then grunge took over and I had to find something else to get my "jollys" off! Seems like a lifetime ago!

When Luc played for the Lobos he lived across the street from us, he'd buy us ice cream, have water balloon fights with all the kids in the neighborhood. Was just an all around good guy, Luc still holds records here in New Mexico and I can't remember a more popular Lobo . Long Live Longley
That’s really cool the main ‘Last Dance’ guys did a special Longley episode for him. Phil, Kerr, Pippen, Jordan, etc. That says something about the bond of that team.
MJ tributes at the end means a lot. There are still people saying the Bulls were awesome without good center... They did not realize how tough Longley played and the perfect fit he was for these Bulls.
Luc was far better than he got credit for certainly better than Will Purdue, Stacey King, and Brad Sellers who Jerry Reinsdorf and Joe Krause brought in to try and replace the aging Bill Cartwright. It took a few years but Luc grew into a solid center. He couldn't compete against some of the better ones like Shaq or Olajuwan, but against the lesser centers he held his own. He basically owned Seattle in that finals series.

@@mrmillennium2697 bill wennington was never seen as more than a backup when they signed him but Scott Williams on the other hand had potential all though he was more of a power forward than a center. Stacey king should have been a premier center in the league for years. He was originally projected to go #1 in the 1989 draft but dropped a tad to #6. He had a good college career but when he hit the NBA he regressed completely and disappeared. Probably one of the biggest wasted picks of that decade and it wasn’t the bulls fault either.
The thing that is lost with the Bulls is they had a great team.
Anyone saying bulls was awesome without a centre wasn’t watching games and knows nothing about basketball

What a great documentary. Great to finally hear his whole story. I entered The University of New Mexico as a freshman the same year as he did. Was at all the home games he played. It was a great time. I always was a fan of his and thought it was cool that a guy from UNM got to play with the Bulls and win championships. He inspired an interest in Australia and I’ve been fortunate enough to have visited Perth and Fremantle. Happy to see that he has found happiness and his place in the world. Cheers, mate.

Born & raised on Chicago Southside I was there as a diehard BULLS fan over 65yrs, and I will never forget the roll he played and watching Luc transformation into what was exactly needed to for the BULLS win. I'm from ABQ. Luc Longley is a legend in that town. He always played a huge part of the community. He held my brother up to dunk a ball one day visiting with special needs kids. Luc and Brian Urlacher are 2 of the greatest Lobos of all time. The love we still have for him is well deserved. He played so well in the absence of Pip. 98 was Luc's greatest season. Thank you Mr Longley, you are worth your height in gold.

Very enjoyable and very deserved documentary. The Lucs and Steves, Bills and Juds of the team weren't the stars but would seem to be the threads of humanity and decency that bind a team to create greatness.
Thank you for all you did for those championship teams; as a fan we love your contribution and your story. I turned 21 in 1991 at the start of the dynasty and my 20s were the best decade ever watching the Bulls dominate Thank you for being part of my journey. Enjoy your life and your legacy!

I met Luc Longley at a restaurant in Albuquerque during a graduation party for a friend of mine back when he played for UNM. He couldn't have been more gracious and nice to someone he had never met before.. This is a deserved addition to the "Last Dance" mini series.
Such a great tribute to one of the legends of the game, he deserves this special documentary so much. Thanks for the great memories, Luc, God bless!

I'm not a basketball fan, at all. I happened to stumble upon this when the RUclips video auto played and it had me hooked 10 minutes in. What an amazingly humble guy Luc is. And fascinating story of his life.
I don't know why watching this was good for my mental health but it was. It really goes to show you that, there's so many pieces to make a team great, it's not just about Jordan or Pippen, there's a lot of other pieces that had to fit for a team to win championships, and that matters a lot, because not everyone is meant to be a Jordan or Kobe, or Lebron. But I bet there's a inner Luc in all of us.

The fans don't always know what makes a team great. However, the players do. It's a real sign of respect for Longley that superstars like Pippen and Jordan took part in this documentary. That was a pleasure to watch!

MJ probably felt that Luc wouldnt want to be included in a documentary centred on MJ since the two of them had such a confrontational relationship during their time on the Bulls. They probably never talked after that last season until recently.
He did do a 30 minute interview about Luc though.

Love Luc! I was a young boy when he played for the Lobos. My dad would take me to games. I can remember the crowd cheering “Luc, Luc, Luc”, every time he touched the ball! Glad to see a documentary on him!
I, too, was bothered by Luc's exclusion from 'The Last Dance'. After the second episode, it was something I specifically noticed, and I hoped that they would give him his moment in a later hour, but it never happened. That said, we in Chicago remember. Thanks, Luc, for your huge part in bringing Chicago three championships. You are forever a part of Chicago sports lore, and deservedly so.

How nice to say that Randy. The last part was really pretty amazing. The entire documentary on Luc was great. I think after he left the Bulls, his legacy was really damaged.
Luke was probably excluded because the director of The Last Dance couldn't be bothered trying to reach him and set up a zoom interview for someone they did not think was famous enough to be an attraction to casual fans. Consider how little screen time Toni Kukoc got compared to Steve Kerr.

Luc, this is one of or it is the most inspirational documentary I've ever seen. Those years you played were the years that shaped who I was when It came to basketball and I have not nor never will forget you & the Bulls of the 90s. Sad to say but I stopped watching basketball after last championship game, like for you for me it was never the same.

Luc Longley fits the Chicago Bulls to a tee. MJ was surrounded by exceptional role players and Luc was no exception. Huge Chicago Bulls fan here.
Jordan had more than role players. He had a flat out superteam. No wonder why they never lost. They’re already a 50 plus win team without MJ.
This is an interesting documentary on a thoughtful, intelligent, sensitive, down-to-earth man, who is self aware and showed his vulnerabilities. It's easy to see why he got on so well with Steve Kerr and Phil Jackson who have similiar traits.

I've been in Albuquerque, New Mexico my whole life, and I can say I was lucky enough to see Luc play with the Lobos at The Pit his entire college career. He was extraordinary as a basketball player, and I identified with his demeanor, being laid-back and relaxed. Plus, we're pretty close in age to each other. That was my attitude toward life too. When he was traded to the Bulls, at the time, MJ was my favorite player, having followed his career at UNC for the two years he was there, and being picked third in the NBA draft, I was really excited to watch what Luc might do to help the team after MJ came back from his stint in baseball. No one can ever take away what Luc did for that team. I was proud to be a Bulls fan, and a Lobos fan before that...and a big reason for that was Luc!
