  • Larry Bird Night from February 1993 at the Boston Garden. Hosted by Bob Costas, the Celtics organization made sure this even wasn't a typical retirement ceremony. There was no game, just the event which featured many of Bird's Celtic teammates and coaches, along with a sitdown with Magic Johnson

These men single handily brought the NBA out of obscurity and into every living room in America during the 1980's. Celtics vs. Lakers is among the greatest rivalries in the history of sports. Bird, Magic, Parish, Kareem, McHale, Worthy, Ainge, Rambis ..those were the days.

In 1974 Larry Bird was my P.E assistant when I was in the 8th grade and he was a senior at Springs Valley High School. At the beginning of each P.E. class we always ran 10 warmup laps around the gym. One day, a trampoline was set up on the basketball court and there was Larry Bird bouncing on it. As the whistle blew and we reluctantly lined up to run our laps, our teacher (who was also Larry's basketball coach) blew his whistle, and said "Larry is going to take 10 shots while jumping on the trampoline. If Larry makes any shots, each one made will delete a lap that you must run." Coach threw the ball to Larry and right there in front of me and the entire boys Jr. High P.E. class, Larry proceeded to hit 7 out of 10 shots while bouncing up and down on the trampoline, 40 feet away from the goal. Larry set an incredible example for me as a young boy in French Lick, Indiana that helped me through my entire adult career. If you are willing to work very hard and never give up, your dreams can and will come true. Thank you Larry.

Didn't you play sports like most NORMAL boys and if you did, didn't you have a player you idolized like most NORMAL boys? And what the hell would most boys know about idolizing any humanitarian?? We're talking about sports. Not politics! And since you want to get on that subject, then you're right. Just about everything you see, touch and interact with was invented by Black people! Even hockey by a group of Black men in Nova Scotia. Or the invention of the third rail by a brother named Granville T. Woods who BTW, sued Thomas Edison and took him to court TWICE over a patent! So yes, there are loads of BLACK humanitarians for LeBron to possibly pattern himself after!
And since you want to call LeBron "Queen James", I'll bet YOU won't dare step out onto the court and try to challenge him! And this is coming from someone who's been around the game for five decades! I've played the game, coached and refereed the game! Stop labeling people on hearsay!

I know exactly what you mean, blaze king. I was always a Celtics fan because of my Dad who told me of the great teams that came before Bird. His favorite was Cousy but by the time he saw Larry Legend play he changed his mind on who the greatest was. I hated Magic, not the man but the Laker. Everything about Magic was easy to like. Great smile, great player, friendly man to all and he was great for the Los Angeles community, but I hated him when the Celtics and Lakers played. I believe we who witnessed them in their prime saw the absolute best that basketball can ever be. Geeze when I think about the players in theat era: Dominique Wilkens, Barkley, Isaiah Thomas, Malone, Ewing, Dr. J, Iceman Gervin, Rodman, Worthy, Jordan, Mullins, Stockton, Jabaar, , Drexler, Sikma, Dantley, Bernard King, Olajuwon, Moncrief, Lambeer, and Magic. I know I must have missed some but what a great bunch of opponents! I love Larry and Magic as if I knew them personally because they played the game in a way that not only honored the game but they honored the fans by giving their all year in and out. I barely even watch anymore, the game lost its edge. Where is the passion and courage? Maybe I just got spoiled watching the best that ever played.

In the beautifully done documentary “Magic and Bird: a courtship of rivals”, Magic disclosed many personal things regarding himself, his teammates and Bird. Magic stated his teammates made unkind and derogatory remarks regarding his Aids. But one day, while Magic was very depressed, he received a phone call. The caller said “hey Earvin, you hang in there and take care of yourself. And if you ever need anything, please call me buddy.” Magic teared up when he talked about that phone call. He said when you are really down and out, you know who your real friends are! That caller was Larry Bird.

Bird might not have been the greatest athlete in the NBA, but he didnt need to be, because he could shoot with a guy in his face, and no matter if he had a two foot high jump, NOBODY was as relaxed in the air, as Larry Bird.
Guys today are great at shooting open jumpers, but if you have someone in their face, or get them contested in mid air, they brick it.
I hated Larry Bird as a kid. I didnt get him, but years later, watching the game, I learned how special he was.
The guy ALWAYS won, with whomever he played with. That says so much. He made guys more alert, and better.

It is odd you say that. I have been absorbing these videos about Larry lately. I watched this growing up, jaw on the floor. I remembered how in the small town where I lived basketball and sports in general bonded us together regardless of race. Things I had thought were gone forever reemerged in the last 4 years. Don't see race, see the person. Larry and Magic's rivalry brought life to the NBA and taught us all a great lesson about how iron sharpeneth iron.

Obama’s divisive race baiting rhetoric set back race relations 50 years.

Bird became my favorite player the second I saw him play against Wichita State. Could not believe what I was seeing. Haven't seen anything close to that since.

I'm not a Celtic fan but I have to admit that Bird had game and I respect game.
