Bird was an excellent offensive rebounded his first few years in the league. I think it took too much out of him so those numbers went down a bit afterwards.
Bird was his father. Bettered, more successful... But still. He became so much of what he admired and even repeated a few of the same mistakes. He is an extraordinary testament to nature sublimated into nurture. Likely my all time favorite basketball player. He's a deserved hero to many... I appreciate the humanity under it all. The good and the not so good.
I wanted to be like LARRY BIRD.AS A KID.I imitated his dominant fundamental moves .He influenced my game.I wore his number..My Papa that was about 80 years was a die hard Celtics fan..So i grew up watching Larry Bird before the michael jordan era...
One common thread through all of the video’s about Bird is that he earned the respect of all the players, whether they were on his team or not. Here was a blue collar type player in a white collar world that by his own admission, never saw color, just came to win, period. We could all take a lesson in that.
Bird was way quicker in his younger days than he is given credit for. He averaged 15+ rebounds a game in the 1981 NBA Finals, he was an excellent athlete. People are putting him in his 1985 and later box, when injuries affected his quickness.
And the BS about him not being a good athlete is laughable as well, when he was able to dive and grab loose balls, box dudes out on the offensive end with strength. Look at one of his signature plays, where he grabbed his own miss and put it back in mid air. In comparison to Jordan, Nique, etc, yeah, Bird wasnt as athletic, but he WAS a good athlete. Absurd to say otherwise.
A roommate in college wasn't my equal athletically but after I lost to him in racketball I realized sports was not who was the quickest but the smartest.
I haven’t been able to watch basketball since Bird retired. I am very thankful that I got to live through the Larry Bird vs Magic Johnson era. I feel sorry for everyone who didn’t get to experience it. It was a great time. I wasn’t ready for him to retire. I wanted it to last forever. The Garden was sold out and that included “standing room only” tickets for Bird’s retirement. That tells me a lot of people felt the same way I did. Michael Jordan was a great athlete but it seemed to me he played “ball hog basketball”. It was Jordan and 5 other guys. Not really a team sport like when Magic and Bird played. Bird’s team beat Jordan plus 5 other guys every time in the playoffs. That should speak for itself. To me it seemed like Winning, flashy passing, clutch shooting were more important than statistics. I am so grateful that Bird and Magic existed during my lifetime.
Greatest basketball player of all time. He might not have the raw numbers some other top players had, but anyone who really knows basketball, you ask them who you'd want to have the ball, on your team, in the final seconds of a championship game, down by a point, they're gonna say Larry Legend.
Right? Take Kobe Bryant for example. Teammates said he wouldn't share the ball. Someone told him "There's no "i" in the word team!" His reply? "True.... but there is an "me"!!"

I am a Bird fan and being from a small town in Indiana like he was made him a hero. Some people don’t realize how much basketball play a part in our lives here in Indiana. The high school games are always packed with people. Just about every house has a goal and I think almost every barn has one. Larry just made us proud to have a greatness come from these small town barn yards and packed high school gyms the the Boston gardens and championships.
I know well how basketball can be a big part of life in Indiana. When I was in high school, (Ballinger, Texas) Football was it. Very important. I'll never forget what Bobby Fischer did for chess in the 60s.

Larry Bird... just like (KAJ, MJ and EMJ) was a household name when I was growing up. Even non basketball fans would pickup these names when trying to point out something... even if it wasnt about basketball
The fact Bird and Magic NEVER player a second in any uniform other then the team that drafted them and wouldn't says everything about that NBA back then!
That is so sad that he is not part of his daughters life. I am a father and if i couldn't see my little girl, it would crush me. You have so much Larry but missed out on way to much. makes me so sad.
Underrated? No way....he's sooo respected by fans and players and it's ALWAYS been that way.... He's A LOT of things....but underrated is definitely not one of them
Larry Legend legitimized the three point shot in an era when coaches considered it a joke or novilty shot! Larry is definitely a top 5 all time basketball player, and I may be biased being a Celtics fan, but in my opinion, he's the goat of the 80s. He did everything well, not just shoot he controlled the tempo he created opening for others to shine....while everyone was playing checkers, Larry Bird played chess!
I always appreciated the Bird vs. Magic thing. They don't have things like that in the league anymore ,& it's a shame & the game is truly missing it. The NBA has became to commercialized and it's a product or a brand. I miss the old days & I'm greatful I was able to watch atleast the 90's being I was born in the 80's. MJ was just getting to his prime/peak years when I first remember in like 1991-92 seeing games
The reason I put Bird higher than Jordan is due to Bird's ability to dominate a game withOUT the ball having to be in his hands. Jordan had to have the ball to affect the game. He had to score to dominate the game. Bird could do it passing, rebounding. Worthy said he'd "much rather have to guard Jordan because Bird was so dangerous without the ball." Coming off picks etc.
Larry could run and jump to the degree necessary. The best all-round basketball player ever. It was not how many points he scored but it was his effect on the team. I really miss watching him play.
Part of the Southern Indiana traditions were to go from town to town and play on the outdoor courts. I have many an asphalt/concrete burn and pebbles in my elbows and knees form these encounters. While playing in Orleans one Sunday afternoon, I sprained an ankle, went to the car, wrapped it with an ace bandage and taped it with electrical tape, then played on until dark, drove home to Salem and couldn't walk the next day. The next weekend I was at Scottsburg, playing again. Pickup games were a part of life during and after high school. French Lick was always fun to play because the competition was always great. I well remember Larry as the kid who could keep up with all of us! Those were days of basketball and friends, no color was ever seen except for the white nylon or silver chain nets and orange rims, shirts and skins. If you read this and get Larry to remember, I was the player with the Gold '65 Corvair with 88A1948 as the tag. Thanks, Larry, for letting me have my memories!
They asked Lebron who is his top 3 players of all time and he said "Bird, Mike, and doctor J ..." then they asked him his Mt Rushmore another time he said "Jordan, Bird, Magic, are the top 3, then I'll take Oscar Robertson as 4th." Kareem, who is either 1-2-or-3 as the greatest player of all time, was asked who the best player he ever played against (and he played against everyone) was and he said "Probably Larry Bird." Get it? Bird is COMFORTABLY one of the 3 or 4 greatest players IN HISTORY and it's not even close. Won the MVP or finished 2nd for 9 straight seasons. Make no mistake -- because people don't talk about this -- while Bird was playing he was considered the GOAT, and was considered the far superior player to Magic, his main rival.
Nut Case Alert, Nut Case Alert. After game 5 of the 1987 NBA finals (Junior Sky Hook) Larry Bird said in front of the world that Magic was the best basketball player he had every seen.
You would have to get rid of all the prima dona's with there shoe deals and make them earn them like in the 80s and 90s. These kids are given millions before they have even played at pro level, I believe MJ said this.
The NBA would have to take away all that money the first year ,say ok ,let's see what you got first, if they are great then they have to agree to sign n stay with a team 5 years ,all this dang trading is too unreal ,how you gonna bond with team mates , smdh
Remember: You can't turn back the hands of time. As one commentator said he was fortunate to live during the Magic Johnson/Larry Bird era, but, I'm fortunate to have lived during the time of Wilt Chamberlain, Dr. J, George McGinnis, Kevin McHale, MJ, Kobe, Steph Curry & even rookie T Jackson -Davis because I love basketball &the passion these men have for the game!❤
Miss watching you play bird ,best time of my life (for sports ) cause my dad took me to games ❤❤❤,ik all the players from other teams ,Larry ate ,drank, lived dreamed bball, ❤we lived ate ,drank and dreamed #larrybird ❤❤❤
I grew up in Indy, but every summer spring break, I was on my grandfather's farm. I loved being in Harrods burg indiana. Jim Smiths barn had a full Cort in the loft but temporary.
“Follows his own shot….” “His body was behind the basket…” And a sharpshooter, and one of the best passers… totally sick. “Rook, I’m the best f*ckin shooter in the league right now. In the LEAGUE.”
After Bird and Magic retired I really stopped watching the NBA. Those teams excelled in team basketball. Assists, rebounds, defense, passing, etc. It has now become players who want the rock to shoot. It's an individual, boring game today.
15:56 I miss the days when I would get Sports Illustrated and read it from cover to cover. I remember a lot of the covers from this era and definitely remember this one.
The Celtics and Larry's legacy would've been stratospheric and there would've been no dominance from the Bulls in the 90s had Len Bias and Reggie Lewis had a chance to play together with Bird against Jordan and Pippen. History would've been very different.
People be crazy when they say bird couldn't play today. Today's game is all about skills and Larry had that in bundles. He would draw fouls and shoot free throws at an Embiid rate
Ik it’s a small/weird thing to take away from this, but his comment about what ppl think of him regarding his first born daughter and ex is something simple, but you don’t hear a lot of ppl say, and if they say it, actually follow through with it. “I know what/who I am so why would I care what other ppl say about me”, that takes an extremely mentally strong person to think and act like that. It’s funny bc he was known for his smack talk and being aggressive on the court, but at the same time he was very quiet, reserved, grateful, modest, etc etc off the court, he genuinely was a great person and a great idol/influence for not only basketball players, but anyone. He thinks about other ppl in his life, he doesn’t do stuff just for the money, he doesn’t care about fame and the theatrics that come with being a pro athlete, just a down to earth guy. A good saying is “it’s always the quiet guys you have to look out for, bc once they stop being quiet you know you’re in trouble
no one ever talks about the effect that Len Bias'' death caused in Bird. Bird even stated that the Celtics drafting of Bias would help him in playing less time, resulting in Bird being able to recover & play longer ... how things work out in life
A man is known by his enemies- born, raised and lived in LA for the Magic 80’s. We knew Bird better than ANYBODY. For an entire decade he brought hell to the west coast Lakers - and we hated him for it. Slow, awkward and we STILL couldn’t stop him! We beat ‘em 2-1 in the ‘Ship - but he brought the best out of us.
I met Larry Bird once back in the mid 90’s. He stood nearly a foot taller than me. I didn’t know who he was or anything about him. One of his friends introduced me and asked if I ever watched basketball. I explained that I was the worst basketball player in school so I never became a fan of the sport and rarely ever watched. After watching this video, I’m a Larry Bird fan. I had no idea who I had the good fortune to meet that day.
If you look closely when he stops to sign the autograph he signs it left handed. That’s right he writes left handed but played ball as a righty who could play with his left too.
I do not believe in the GOAT discussion; there are way too many different eras. However, I know my favorite time period is the 1980s and 1990s! My favorite team is the 1980s Celtics and Larry Bird. He is so entertaining but he is on a team with Parish, McHale, Ainge, Johnson, Walton, Maxwell, Wedman, and others. The team play, passing, fast breaks, shots, and the whole game. I only watch films of them on RUclips!
I feel the exact same way, as far as the 80s and early 90s Celtics and Bird. I would add, Jerry Sichting, then rebounding, to your lists. Talk about "Super Teams", but they worked themselves into that and had a few fortuitous acquirements, after Bird, and along the way, in rookie Mchail, Robert Parish, Dennis Johnson, Ainge, and Bill Walton, not to mention that great bench. They were loaded for bear, probably even more than the 60s Celtics.

Bird will always be the goat.
This video is perfect.
Larry Bird will always be the GOAT.
Awesome, great video! My favorite retired player, I hope he reconnects with his daughter too :)
Larry could run and jump to the degree necessary. The best all-round basketball player ever. It was not how many points he scored but it was his effect on the team. I really miss watching him play.
I became so proud of him
Larry Legend!!!
Larry has deeply been affected by his circumstances, I pray 🙏 that Larry Bird will be happy in his life forever! He's my hero for sure . 👍
@@msp5138 Well, Magic in those times was top 3 of all time
Larry Legend! Aka the hick from french lick! The best small forward ever!
If there's a way to get back to the simplicity of the 80s and 90s, let's all pull together and make it happen
You would have to get rid of all the prima dona's with there shoe deals and make them earn them like in the 80s and 90s. These kids are given millions before they have even played at pro level, I believe MJ said this.
real shit
The NBA would have to take away all that money the first year ,say ok ,let's see what you got first, if they are great then they have to agree to sign n stay with a team 5 years ,all this dang trading is too unreal ,how you gonna bond with team mates , smdh
Love you bird the goat
Remember: You can't turn back the hands of time. As one commentator said he was fortunate to live during the Magic Johnson/Larry Bird era, but, I'm fortunate to have lived during the time of Wilt Chamberlain, Dr. J, George McGinnis, Kevin McHale, MJ, Kobe, Steph Curry & even rookie T Jackson -Davis because I love basketball &the passion these men have for the game!❤
Bird is not one the best, He is THE BEST!!!!!!!!
Larry Legend.
Larry bird is a pure soul
They need to make a movie on Larry bird
But who would play him??
Miss watching you play bird ,best time of my life (for sports ) cause my dad took me to games ❤❤❤,ik all the players from other teams ,Larry ate ,drank, lived dreamed bball, ❤we lived ate ,drank and dreamed #larrybird ❤❤❤
When ESPN covered sports
COACH KNIGHT SAID IT ALL.
I seen a comment on here Larry bird was over rated the person who said that obviously don't have a clue about the NBA at that time overrated lmfao
I grew up in Indy, but every summer spring break, I was on my grandfather's farm. I loved being in Harrods burg indiana. Jim Smiths barn had a full Cort in the loft but temporary.
I just want to say thank you to Mrs. Georgia Bird for sharing this wonderful inspiration with the world...
“Follows his own shot….” “His body was behind the basket…” And a sharpshooter, and one of the best passers… totally sick. “Rook, I’m the best f*ckin shooter in the league right now. In the LEAGUE.”
Larry legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Larry was angelic looking with the big hair.
He is the greatest pure shooter of all time
Humility is always attractive.
Happy for him.
After Bird and Magic retired I really stopped watching the NBA. Those teams excelled in team basketball. Assists, rebounds, defense, passing, etc. It has now become players who want the rock to shoot. It's an individual, boring game today.
here here
I hung around for Air Jordan. The man was otherworldly. Then I also lost interest in the NBA.
Larry Bird and Dennis Rodman are my two favorite players
We could and should all learn from Larry Bird.
15:56 I miss the days when I would get Sports Illustrated and read it from cover to cover. I remember a lot of the covers from this era and definitely remember this one.
I cried watching this doc
The Celtics and Larry's legacy would've been stratospheric and there would've been no dominance from the Bulls in the 90s had Len Bias and Reggie Lewis had a chance to play together with Bird against Jordan and Pippen. History would've been very different.
Women keep the world running, thank you Mrs Bird
People talk about jumping, dunking, shooting, dribbling, flashy passes. Whatever, Bird could just play.
People be crazy when they say bird couldn't play today. Today's game is all about skills and Larry had that in bundles. He would draw fouls and shoot free throws at an Embiid rate
He would torch the league if he was playing today. Guys would be scared to go up against him.
Larry Legend!
Larry, your so good at what you do because you don’t think your good enough! 👍🇺🇸
❤😂🎉Larry Legend 🌍🌎🌏
Let's NOT forget he was 6-9. Like Magic, he had a view via the Z-axis few had.
Yes both could handle it like few bigs in their day. And Larry was the best shooter ever.
no one ever talks about the effect that Len Bias'' death caused in Bird. Bird even stated that the Celtics drafting of Bias would help him in playing less time, resulting in Bird being able to recover & play longer ... how things work out in life
Len Bias and Reggie Lewis who became captain after Bird retired
Both teams were beautiful teams. Their skills cause that.
best sports doc i ever heard seen or watched the neighbors comments were so so important what a MAN a real MAN
Larry Bird Mentality.
Am a fanatic BIRD Supporter until now.❤❤❤
Bad back. Poor guy. He’s great!
👍🙂
Would have been 2-2 if you guys had shown up in 86. 😉
GOAT
Larry Legend❤
If you look closely when he stops to sign the autograph he signs it left handed. That’s right he writes left handed but played ball as a righty who could play with his left too.
One of the greatest of all time
I do not believe in the GOAT discussion; there are way too many different eras.
Well said.
You take bird of those teams in the 80's and the celts don't win a single chip
@@jameshale915 true and you take away the weapons around bird and the story ends the same 😁
@@joeysmith2475 I don't think so. Bird elevated his teammates.
Case in point: 1979 ISU
Larry is one of the NBA legend that we can call simple, silent but deadly he is like gun with silencer👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭fan from ph lets drink to that
Truly the goat!! He beat everyone even my Jordan
