- This is the follow-up video to the '7 Artisans EF SE - Sony's best adapter for Canon Lenses with EYE Autofocus in video' I made a few months ago. In this video, I am looking at the same adapter after months of use and whether I still think it's the best.

Does someon have a link to the firmware downloads? I can´t find them anymore on the website, their how-to-video refers to a downloads section which is not on their website anymore...
Been using it for almost a year now on my FX30 and had no issues. Updated easy using Win 11 PC. Working with Sigma and Canon lenses. I don't use lens stabilization so can't talk to that but AF works like native.
Normally run with a matt box so haven't noticed the ghosting... but will look out for it now :)
What lenses? I have a 24-105 F4 L, 17-40 F4 L want to pull the trigger on this one so bad!
@@PeteManabat Got the 24-105 F4 L on my camera right now. Just shot a concert with it and AF was perfect the whole time.
Do you by chance know is the sigma 18-35 1.8 art works with it? Or the canon 17-50 f2.8 efs?
@@paperstacksfilms I mostly use the sigma 18-35 1.8 art with it. Works great :)
...haven't tried the Canon 17-50 f2.8
I have it AND IT IS THE BEST!!! All they need to do is fix the issues thru firmware and it will be PERFECT!!! Using on the new Sony A7C II!
How is the AI AF for video? I’m currently looking to get a A7Cii as well and use my EF lens with it for videos, thanks!
I have a sony A7 IV firmware 2.01 and the ef-se adapter firmware 0.1.4
I have a canon 50 1.8, a tamron 24-70 g2 and a tamron 70-200 g2
All of those lenses have the same problem with the adapter. The autofocus doesn't work at all when i'm trying to focus on the sides of the frame and i conly focus on one third of the picture. When i press the c/p button the autofocus works everywhere, however i'm not able to use continuous autofocus with video anymore.
From what i understand, to use continuous autofocus with video i need to be in PDAF so i guess that the default for my adapter is PDAF and the focusing problem occurs in PDAF. But i have no idea if this is a problem with the adapter that somehow doesn't want to use it on 2 thirds of the frame or a problem with my lenses which support pdaf only in the center or a problem with the body and it's firmware.
I tried all awailable firmware versions for the adapter (0.1, 0.1.2 and 0.1.4, btw i saved them in a repo so they aren't lost) older versions had focusing problems (didn't work at all) with some older lenses that i had (tamron 70-200 2.8 first version and sigma 24-70 2.8 DG EX HSM) so i bough newer lenses and those work fine with the latest firmware (apart from the failing to focus on the sides of the frame problem ^^).
I wonder if someone has the same problem than me and if they managed to fix it.
I tried to contact 7artisans through twitter and mail, i got a response on twitter but not a useful one yet and no one responded to my email.
Thanks for the very detailed response. I did have a Sony A74 for a days and managed to check a 50 1.8 - 50. 1.2 - 85 1.8 100-300 70-200 all canon which all seemed to work. I didn’t especially notice the issue you raised but I wasn’t looking for it.
One problem I initially thought I had was that the autofocus wasn’t work with it, but then slightly disconnected the adapter and reconnected it and it started working. And sometimes in first use with the 100-300 I need to slight disconnect the lens and the reconnect and it works fine. A strange kink I know but after that everything seemed ok but obviously I wasn’t fully testing for what you found so I could be wrong. I also checked the 24-70 tamron the worked with the IS.
I don’t know which firmware I have as I can’t connect to my pc atm still. Sorry I can’t be of more help but hopefully check comments for any owners of the A74 and find out if anyone there has had a fix for what you are experiencing.
What about photography? It works any good?
This is truly the best converter available today but few people know about it. I am using it and it works with most lenses for EF mount such as the 50stm or Tamron 2470vc G1 that support VC image stabilization of the lens. I am using it, the focus speed is not inferior to Sony lenses. However the 1.2 firmware worked best, I tried updating to the new firmware 1.44 and it didn't work, so I had to reinstall the 1.2 firmware and it worked fine again.
Thanks for the very useful information. I’m sure many who read will benefit.👍

@@charleskevincanetearabe3673 I’ve not personally upgraded but hopefully the person who started this tread may help else there is a video online about the installation process but some who it did not work for me.
Hey what camera are you using btw?
I have a7iii and ef monut canon 85mm f1.4 and sigma 35mm f1.4 it will work together with autofouse in S&Q vide mode
Are asking or saying it does work?
I have the new Sony A7CII and only issue I have is in S&Q mode (which switches to Super35 mode), it stops autofocus from working. Switching to Super35 mode period stops autofocus from working. & thats really all my issues
That’s a strange issue I’ve not heard before. I must try that myself although I do think I’ve used the auto focus in S&q mode before on my Sony A7s3.
It just been delivered, I tried it with Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and it's working fine. Af is not as quick as Sony lenses but still pretty good.
Which camera are you using. Btw thanks for helping people by posting the lens and the usage.
I have a Sony a6400. I was playing with it for only 10 minutes but I'm happy so far.
The other one that I see come up a lot more is the MC-11 for sigma to Sony however again someone people have had issues with canon lens not working with that one too I’d be interested to see if you’d do a review on that one as again those videos are all mostly 4-5 years ago i think I found one from 1 year ago
I defo don’t think the MC-11 works as good as I’ve never seen any videos where AF works as well. I must say I’ve never used one myself but I think there was a comment in one of my videos where someone had used both adapters and the one I’ve tested works better. Although it may have even been on another video. I’d do ever use the MC-11 please do feed back here as you raise a good point which could do with more feedback and uses 👍.
Have you ever used the Metabones EF-E adapter Mark V? That's the other one that I've heard good things about, but all the reviewers I can find have used one or the other but not both. A comparison between the two would be fantastic.
I’ve not used that one but others and they’ve never had anything like the eye autofocus speed as on this one. But like I said I’ve not used that exact one so happy to be proven wrong or at least be able to test. I don’t get equipment sent to me but if I ever get one or borrow I’ll come back and let you know 👍
Question, Does the base plate come off? Asking to see if it will interfere with mounting to a camera with a cage on
Good question I don’t it is removable as I generally need to mount on the adapter if on a gimbal but in my cage I don’t think it interferes.
had anyone tried it on an A6400? does it work? planning to pair it with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8.. thanks
It depends on lenses you're going to use. As for me, I can't get it work with a6400 and ef-s 50-250 is stm, on any firmware.
Did 7Artisans remove the firmware from their webpage? i can't seem to find any link to firmware or uploading software on their site.
@@benyyz I’ve not heard about being removed but I must say their site isn’t easy to navigate. Did you manage to find it?
I there! I just bought the adapter and it seems there is a problem with aperture control on sony FX30... Impossible to control aperture on Tokina 11-20 ATX Pro II f2.8 and Canon EFS 17-55 f2.8 (the only 2 Canon EF lenses I have...). It stuck to the maximum aperture on both lenses (f2.8). I'm on the latest firmware. Any news from 7artisans and an upgrade for sony FX30?
I'm sure I've heard a lot about FX30 in the comments of my other video, so see if someone has either had a similar issue or solved it by asking if they've had an update. I'm not sure if this will help but I tried a Tamron 24-70 on the Sony A74 and at first it didn't work but after re attaching the lens and adapter it then worked. And another point a 100-300 which for months I thought didn't work I got to work using the same method.
I've never upgraded, so assume I'm on the base firmware, I think I said in my video I'm not going to update, at least for now, since it is for me it working I tried all my cables and couldn't connect so forgot about either trying to chase up 7artisans or problem solving that for now.
I have the Tokina 11-16 2.8 and that does work so as you say it might well be a firmware thing, sorry I can be of more help but check my previous video comment section as you maybe able to ask someone there. I don't have an FX30 to test myself, although I'm very curious about that camera!
Thanks a lot for your answer! It was definitely a firmware issue… looking for your previous video and thé comments I’ve tried something: downgrading to firmware 1.2… and it works ! I was on latest firmware 1.4.
What’s strange is that chinese website offers 1.4 firmware while 1.2 is on english website…
Anyway… it works now…
I don’t know the différences between both firmware since 7artisans do not publish « release note ».
I will contact them to make a feed back. If I have an answer I will let you informed
I used this adapter on my sony zv-e10 with sigma 18-35 and It works like a native lens.. However I used the ef 50mm f1.8 the old versin (non stm) the AF works but slow
Yeah I found the 50 1.8 slow too.
But the Nifty Fifty is notoriously slow to begin with 😅
There is problem using the adapter with the newer cameras. I used it on the A6700 and it is buggy. But on the older ZV-E10 is ok. I cannot find a higher firmware. Anyone has seen a new firmware? BTW the USB cable is very picky only one out of 10 of the usb cable I have works. I think its because the cables are seldom used (this is a very old usb cable).
Yeah, the new cameras seem to be a bit varied although I tried the a74 and that worked great plus I'm sure I've seen the A6700 used in the comments but it might mean downgraded firmware or upgrading.
Help 😭 Yesterday i Bought this lens installed on my zve10 with carbon 50mm 1.4 full fraem lens autofocus not working 😢 updated firmware please help me
Which adapter and which lens? Not sure I've ever heard of a carbon 50mm 1.4. Was the adapter working with other lenses? Is it that this is the first time you are using the adapter? Has it worked with other lenses?
MinutesBack : Could please tel me if the Viltrox Adapter EF-NEX IV is usable and compatible with SONY NEX-6 camera?. Thank you.
I’d love to be able to help but not used either of those items. If i ever I’ll come back to inform you. Are you look for photography purposes or video?
@@minutesback for photography purposes.
How secure/tight is the physical connection between this adapter and lens and adapter and camera body? Does it have looseness?
I’ve found it secure, not had any issues. I’ve added up to a 70-200 which heavy although I normally hold it support the lens.
@@minutesback Thank you!
I wonder if it has issues with the a6700 due to the "ai autofocus" algorithms used in that camera, and would that mean the a7c2 and a7cr would be affected as well?
I had thought that too but sure I’ve read on my first video that people using camera with Sony AI on some new cameras without issue.
Oh which cameras in particular? From the top of my head I know that zve1, a7c2 and a7cr have it, possibly a7rv as well?

where can you even buy this? it doesn't show up on Amazon or BH
I bought on amazon maybe they are out of stock? All 7artisans have a 20% off Easter sale on at the moment direct from their online store.
with Tamron 70-200/2.8 it does not work, I tried on Sony FX 30 / Sony ZV-E10
Yes I tried a tamron 10-300 that didn’t work either although I found that it worked for a bit then stopped. The 24-70 worked well but maybe the telephoto not so much.
Btw the canon 100-300 L 5.6 old version doesn’t work unless you slightly unmount and then reconnect. Strange but then it does work. Maybe try doing that and see what happens.
On my Sony A7 (Ilce-70) with the Canon EF 70-200mm F4 IS USM lens, I have no problems with the autofocus worth mentioning. But IS behave in strange ways.
I.e IS starts when I turn on the camera. Then may suddenly stop when I use the auto focus. And I have to turn on and off the camera to make it work again.
In P-mode it starts when you press the shutter button or the back focus button, as it should. But it also start if you press the center button.
I only use this camera for stills, so have not tested much with filming.
Thanks for the update and the issue you’ve noted 👍
I found some more weird behaviour on the IS. This time in M-mode.
IS is supposed to start when you half press the shutter button or pressed the back button focus button. . But it does not.
Instead it starts AFTER you have pressed the shutter button, and keeps "rolling".
Sp to make IS work you have to first take a picture, and then keep pressing the back button focus button, while taking pictures, This will keep the IS rolling.
To make it stop, refocus by letting go of the Back focus button and press it again....
Well, at least that is a somewhat doable work around, if quirky....
Took the lesn on an off, and now IS suddenly works flawlessly, as intended by canon. I .e kicks in on half press of shutter, or back button focus.
???
@@PhotographyByRune tbh I’m a video only when I’m on my Sony. I mainly use the AF side of the adapter as I only have 1 IS lens which works OK but I have read varying degrees of use from comments on IS.
They defo could improve firmware for IS although I think I mentioned in my second review that just have the AF is a big win for EF glass usage. But here’s hoping they solve the Is.
@@minutesback lets hope they do.
I plan to aquire an EF 24-105mm f4 IS, that is a lens that will be my walkaround lens, so much more hand held phtography.
So IS is going to be needed. But now I am more in doubt.
I do own a Sony 24-70 F4 Zeiss, but not impressed by the sharpness. But cant afford sony glass, and with EF lenses beeing flogged off cheap by all the photographers switching to RF lenses is good opportunity to aquire some pro lenses'
And this adapter makes that viable
Just picked this up for Sony fx30 here’s my experience:
EF 24-70 - AF works like a charm continuous focus and all! Only issue is no IS on this one but it’s a huge issue for me since I have steady hands and can fix in post.
EF - 70-200 I (older lens) Continuously AF works for like 5 mins and then just stops working which is weird. I have no aperture control either. However the IS is still available for me. If any one knows a way around the aperture control that’d be great!
50 MM - Everything works great! My aperture only goes to 2.8 instead of 1.8 which is a slight bummer.
EF 18-55 - Full function with Continuous AF, IS and Aperture control. AF is a tad bit slower than the other lenses and hunts just a tad depending on distance.
All in all the is def the best adapter for EF lens to Sony body if Video focus is a big deal breaker for you.
I personally won’t be updating it just because I’ve heard that doing so will make things stop working and customer support is garbage so trying to downgrade the firmware is a pain. Hope this helps someone!
I do wonder if the quality control is an issue with 7 artisans as I’ve never had an issue with iris or AF but have with IS. I think I’ve mentioned in video some of the issues but like yourself I’m still glad for the overall EF usage. I recently used in on a commercial project and it worked great although I did also use some native Sony EF glass also.
Thanks so much for sharing your review, I’m sure you’ve helped out a few people for sure!👌

is the &artisans adapter better than the metabones version 5 with the canon 24-105 lens?
I’ve not personally used the metabones adapter for the Sony but I think read a comment on one of my videos claiming that the metabones was as good or didn’t have constant AF for video.
@@minutesback I own the metabones and the 24-105 ef lens and I find the combo is continuously hunting/working/breathing. doesn't seem to just lock on and stay on. Was hoping the 7Artisans did a better job. I love the 24-105 but not usable unless in manual.
@@bykevinmack well the 24-70 that have works great for AF as well as other lenses. The 50 1.8 EF is the only lens I have that seems to work a little slower. @@GremHopkins I've never heard of that feature on the fx3 but I will take a look right now. Thanks for the tip.
With not being able to connect the adapter to a PC, yes you will need to make sure that your usb cable is capable of transmitting data as well as power.
Cables that are usually included with things like power banks/portable chargers can only transmit power and thus won't work for connecting to a PC.
Try a cable that was included with a portable hard drive or camera. Good luck.

That’s a good question. The oldest lens I’ve tried is from the 90s I think which works but AF is a little slower. If it is a EF then it could work but if it’s another mount adapted then probably not.

@@minutesback Sony fx30, and it's been updated to current firmware still won't work
@@paperstacksfilms I’ve heard a lot of good things with that adapter and the FX30. Is it that you mean the adapter is updated or the camera is updated?
I personally have kept the firmware of the adapter as I bought it.
@@minutesback I updated the adapter after it was having the issue with the lens. Even with the updated firmware tho it doesn't fix the issue. I've heard good things too but it won't play well this lens and the lens isn't bad cause it works on my canon 90d perfectly, and my canon 18-55 kit lens works on the adapter fine. So it seems to just not play well with my fx30 and the 7artisans adapter
@@paperstacksfilms yeah sorry to hear that, sounds like it’s specific to how that lens works with the adapter. I’ve used tamron 24-70 which works get but I once tested a tamron 100-300 which didn’t work so well for, well at least it worked for about 2 mins and then stopped.
Btw, I have a canon 100-300 L 5.6 which on works with a strange kink to it. I put the lens on the adapter, switch the camera on, the lens wont work… but if I then on lock the lens hold and twist if I’m removing but don’t remove but then twist back to lock, it then works fine there after. It’s the only lens that does that, not sure if that will help but thought I’d mention. It’s less than perfect but means I don’t immediately need to buy a 100-300mm.
How often do you use this adapter?
Pretty much whenever I shoot. I have some Sony glass also which I use but whenever I use the A7s3 I always at some point use it.
do you think it will work with A7ii?
It should work but the AF on the A7ii itself wasn’t as good as the following generations so I would imagine it would work near the A7ii however I have not managed to test on that specific camera.
