The Sony A-mount to E-mount LA-EA Adapters Explained

- Choosing between Sony's LA-EA1, LA-EA2, LA-EA3, or LA-EA4 adapter used to be an easy decision - the even numbered adapters always gave the best performance. Then Sony introduced E-mount cameras with native phase-detect AF, and so the nuanced decision became less cut-and-dried.
Be sure to watch Part 2 at • The Sony A-mount to E-... .
Here's the nuanced summary for those of you who don't want wade through a 13-minute video, enhanced by viewer "Lofote":
1. Screwdriver-driven lens? LA-EA 2 or 4. (If you don't need autofocus, then you can use LA-EA1 or 3.)
2. SSM / SAM lens and APS-C body: LA-EA1. The LA-EA1 isn't being made anymore, so you can substitute the LA-EA3 instead.
3. SSM / SAM lens and any full-frame body except A7R: LA-EA3
4. Camera that has “NEX” in name, the original A7, A6000, A5000, A3000, A3500, A7S, and A7S II: LA-EA2. Since the LA-EA2 isn't being made anymore, you can substitute the LA-EA4 instead.
5. Sony A7R: LA-EA4
Don't forget to watch the alternative ending at the end! :-)
I talk about the LA-EA5 (which can only be used on the most recent Sony cameras) at • LA-EA4r Monster Adapte... .

RUclips severely needs more teacher type professionals like this wonderful man. Been watching his videos for a few years now and never disappointed.
For us Canon Refugees wanting to deflect to Sony this is BY FAR the best explanation on Sony's native lens adapters in the whole net. T H A N K Y O U!!!!!!!!!
Fnally I can get a good explanation about differences in these adapters! Sony should publish this on their LA adapters pages. Thank you so much Gary 🙏🏻
Ugo Grandolini agreed
This is a godsend. 2022, my Nex-6 died. Trying to figure out where to go with either a Nex-7 used, A7II, or a 6000 series, all while dealing with many legacy lenses. You made everything clear, and now I can buy used stuff knowing what to buy and how to mix them. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
So glad you found it useful!! GF
Great review and very informative. I watched a while ago one about your favorite minolta cameras and I really enjoy your passion and love for photography and how immersed you get with the subject every time. Thank you for this review of the Sony adapters.
I JUST BOUGHT THAT LENS. OMG! THANK YOU!
Context, I just got into full-frame cameras and bought an A7R III and Zeiss 135mm f/1.8 because of all the great things that have been said about it. I bought the latest LE-EA5 Sony A mount to E mount adapter and was so sad that I couldn't autofocus. THEN I FOUND THIS VIDEO THE NEXT DAY. Thank you again for doing this Gary!
Glad you found it helpful! Of course this was made before the LA-EA5 was released, so I couldn't have said, "The LA-EA5 doesn't work any any camera released before 2021". The LA-EA4 is for you.
@@FriedmanArchives That's right, and it's just like you said. Zeiss never made a replacement for this lens. Just a fixed 135mm at f/2.8. Sony GM 135mm at f/1.8 is just out of budget. Again, thank you for this video. It's still helping people like me!
One of the most informative clips I have ever seen. Thank you for the info I needed to know.
Gary, thank you! I have the Zeiss 135 f1/8 and recently bought the a7 iii. You answered my question. The only video I could find that explained it well.
Gary thank you so much. This information can be so hard to find, and you've done an absolutely brilliant job explaining the differences.
Thanks! I'm working on a Part 2 which should be released in about a month.
And to add to my previous comment, this has been an extremely helpful video. Fantastic.
I'm gonna share this channel! Thanks Gary.
Excellent description. First time I really understood the meaning of screw-type lens.
PS, after watching your video I bought the LAE-4 in confidence, thank you for removing the confusion between models. No one else explains as well as you have.
As always you are awesome Gary.. Love the detailed info and presentation
Thank you for a very simple way of explaining things!
Fantastic review and how reviews should be done! History should always be a part of the mix.
I have the LA-EA2 and love it! Great addition to my NEX5n and 7.
And the kids were a great touch at the end! I see you’ve trained them well and photographic comedy with the devil horns/rabbit ears behind your head during that take! 😜
Nice to see you back with a new video!
You rock Gary. Thanks. I've been looking for info on which adapter to find and found it here..
Thanks Gary for giving us one of your characteristic no-nonsense, easy to understand explanation
Gary Friedman it certainly is 😁. Taking my first tentative steps with a mirrorless camera (A6000).
Finally a proper explanation not even clearly given by Sony themselves..thanks gary!!
You are a king 👑 👍🏻
Training to avoid all the pitfalls we fall into by purchasing a body and lens
By far the best explanation so far, thank you !!!
The best video I have ever seen to choose which adapter I need.
Thank you so much Gary
You're quite welcome!
Thank you. You explained it really well. The new LA-EA5 does support screw drive AF but only works for select bodies. Hope Sony release firmware updates to more bodies.
Really good stuff. Thank you so much. I´m about to buy an adapter to my Sony NEX camera. Now I know what to buy.
Hi Gary......your explanation was just Super......it is easy to understand without beating around the bush like others, well done & thank you....!
Thanks!
Glad I found this. With a bunch of Tamron A mount lenses that I can now identify as screw drive, I know I'd need the EA4. However the lenses aren't worth that much and as the EA4 is twice the price of the EA3, this video has helped me decide against keeping all the old lenses. Every other article just wasn't clear. Thanks!
finally an explanation that makes sense, was looking all over youtube, but got all kind of information that was going to make me chose the wrong option.
I really like your videos Gary. All EXCELLENT!
Thanks, John!
Thanks for this vidéo Gary. As usual very clear and informative. Just a note as an A-mount shooter myself on A58, A77ii , A99ii and having tried the LAEA3 on A7R2 during 1 full week with my own lenses, I can tell that the transition a to e has for the moment too many cons for A-mounters involved on the A system. Sony must upgrade the adaptors to give at least the AF system of A77ii, at best the one found in A99ii. 3fps in AFC is a major no-go compared to 12fps AFC for example.
This was an excellent explanation, thank you very much Gary!
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for this information!!!
Nice explanation. Thanks for making it so clear
This video has saved me hours of painstaking research digging deep into old forums ect !!!
Hello Gary, Thank you for this clear explanation! Very professionally explained! I definitely subscribed! You deserve so much more subscribers!
Thanks! Feel free to help spread the word. :-)
Tremendously helpful thank you very much!
Warmest regards from the UK
Nuanced summary begins at 11:25.
Thanks for another detailed video!
You're a legend, thank you so much. I recently broke my A200, and upgraded to an a5100 - this answered everything I needed to know.
Glad it helped!
Thank you very much for your very competent and professional masterclass!
You're quite welcome! :-)
Thanks for the great and detailed explanation about this adapters
Great presentation and great explanation. Thanks a lot... saved me a lot of time 🙏🏻
That was extremely helpful. Thanks for making!
You're quite welcome!
Thanks for detailed explanation.
Great review, answers every question and put me in the right direction, thank you.
Thanks!
Perfect. A friend just gifted me 4 a mount lenses! Was wondering if there was an adapter. Thanks for your great informational videos.
Best explanation by far. Thanks!!! I kind of figured out half of the differences but hadn’t figured out all. Very nice!
Now can you tell me if the la-ea4 needs a firmware update and how the heck do you find it?
@@garyfriedman2005 Thanks for the quick reply. That's what I thought but I ordered a used one and downloaded the manual and the first thing it says is "make sure you have the latest firmware" with no explanation on how to do that or how to download. Thanks again! I can't wait to use my Minolta lenses again!
Gary Friedman also, based on your video, I know the la-ea4 will work with the Minolta and Sony lenses with the screw drive but will it also work with the newer SAL lenses?
Great review. Further reinforces my decision to go with a $19 Fotodiox adapter.
Very Helpful and good summary!
Thanks!
Gary - so grateful for this video - I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out all these adapters!
Succinct and understandably put, Mr. Friedman solved a lingering mystery. Thanks. Now I'm going out and see if I can find an appropriate adapter for my A6000.
Gary this was great! Thank you so much. I am not technically inclined so i found out everything i needed to know in the first four minutes. And some nice history of the AF. Cheers
Glad you found it helpful!
Such an informative video. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing great stuff! Best explanation i ever found! Thanks!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great summary many thanks Gary!
Thanks! Don't forget to watch Part 2... and a 3rd comparison video should be out in a couple of days!
I loved seeing that Maxxum 9 around 10:15! I sold mine years ago to fund by Maxxum 7D, which I replaced with an A77ii that's still going strong (yes ... I haven't ditched the A mount yet).
I still have my Maxxum 7, but I wish I hadn't sold the 9. One of the best cameras Minolta (or anyone, for that matter) ever made.
Excellent content. I wish I saw this before I got the LA-EA5 for my Konica Minolta “Big Beer Can” but hey, that’s a learning experience.
I wish you had too! :-)
Finally I find the answers! Bless you sir! Thank you.
You're welcome!
Very informative video ,i appreciate your knowledge thank you....
Thank you so much Gary! Very clear explanation.
Thank you so much, master! Congrats from Brazil!
Thank you so much!
I was looking for the best adapter for Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 to use on my a6300.
From the looks of it LA-EA1 or LA-EA3 will be the best bet.
Excellent explanation
This man is in a class by himself.........
Thanks - I found this exremely useful!
Thank you for the knowledge shared
gracias, justo necesitaba esa informacion, tengo la sony a6000... a si que comprare la LA-ea1. gracias por todo.
Very good explanation. Thanks alot
Very well explained! I know now that I have the screwdriver lenses, (Tokina, Tamron) and I bought an a7iii Sony. If I buy the LA-EA4, what can I expect when hooking it up? Will I get all the bells and whistles? Do I lose an f-stop? Will I be able to run or will I walk with a limp? All the good comments about you are well-deserved!
Great vid thanks. Simple and sweet.
Thanks for sharing this information with us, hopefully my old Sony a100 lenses will work fine on my a6000.
Glad you liked it. The LA-eA2 (if you can find it) or LA-eA4 should work for any type of A100 lens.
That was just perfect, sir! Thank You! :)
thankyou for the info! very helpful!!!
that is the best way to explain things... thank you !
I think you make a mistake at 1:06 when pointing out the LA-EA3 and LA-EA4 adapters. You got them mixed up.
Other than that this is a fantastic and clear explanation of these adapters as well as a background on the different lens types. Easily the best video about this on You Tube. Thanks!
Totally agree, they should have been positioned in the right order, 1 to 4 from the viewers perspective, it gets a little confusing. Otherwise, great review😀
Nice video man...very helpful cheers
Finally! This answers a lot of questions, thank you :) What about compatibility with 3rd party lenses, especially Tamron and Sigma? I'm shooting with the A77II now, if I want to go to fullframe, I have the option of A99II or go to mirrorless, but only if the LA-EA3 is compatible with 3rd party lenses.
Very informative video!
This was amazingly informative!
Best Teacher Ever ….congratulations!!!!
Wow, thank you!
Thank you Gary!
This is really helpful, thank you.
@@garyfriedman2005 Oh believe me, I will not forget! Thanks again, good info.
Excellent explanation of these adapters! Thank you for the information!
God dam this video is good! Clear and direct information without missing a beat. Thanks Gary!
I appreciate that!
Very informative and helpful. Thank you
You're quite welcome!
I have the sony ZV-e10 and would like to get a lens 24-70mm 2.8 for shooting weddings, just not sure if I should get a speed booster to use the EF to E mount or the La-ea1 and use A mount lenses @@FriedmanArchives
Great video - although there's the version LA-EA5 now of course. I am not sure Minolta put the motor in the lens for cost reasons, at the time this was a sensible engineering move, and most other manufacturers used a similar design - only Canon put a motor in the lens, which did give them an initial advantage. I have a Minolta 5000, 7000 and 9000 and a number of lenses and am looking to adapt them to an A1 and A7RV with the LA-05 - really appreciate the video. Thanks from the UK.
Thanks for your explanation.
Thanks you a lot, very helpful 👌
Brilliant and thanks very much, now apply for a job at Sony.
You are the best reviewr of all
Love your videos man!
brilliant clarity!
Thanks!!
Very useful information!
Thanks!
The autofocus accuracy and speed of the LA-EA4 can't be compared with that of the best Sony SLT cameras. However it is good enough. Nowadays a digital full frame camera is affordable. The Sony a7 camera body can be found new at around 750€. On the other hand nearly all native autofocus full frame e-mount lenses are expensive. The LA-EA4 adapter isn't expensive. It can be found new between 200-250€.
I use many legacy Minolta a-mount lenses I bought from eBay which are really good. I think that it is a clever choice.
I really love my Minolta AF 500mm f/8, the only mirror lens with autofocus ever. There is an exact copy of this lens by Sony too. Nearly all of the first Sony a-mount lenses were exact copies of Minolta lens. These sony lenses are more expensive but are the same as Minolta ones.
It's the autofocus system of the A65 that was used here. So it is the same as the 65. Of course SLT development continued and even when A65 came out it was stripped down from the A77 system that came out the same day. Thats the problem.
Thank you for a clear simple explanation :-)
Great info, thanks a lot!!
Awesome video!
Thanks for the info!
I have a few A mounts from an OLD Minolta alpha series.
I was wondering if it could be used with my Sony a7r II.
This clarified it for me. :)
With a firmware update the LA-EA3 supports 8 or 10 fps continuous AF tracking on the A9. All other combinations only support 3 fps continuous AF tracking at best.
Thank you Gary.
Thank you Very Much Gary !!! Easy Explained !!! Loved the way the Kids Video-bombed you !!! :D
Glad you enjoyed it! (I loved that too. :-) )
Very well explanations
Outstanding, cleared the Sony mud right up!
