The Sony A-mount to E-mount LA-EA Adapters Explained (Part 2)

- This is a continuation of Gary Friedman's video explaining the nuanced behavior of the LA-EAx adapters for Sony's E-mount cameras. (The original video appears here: • The Sony A-mount to E-... )
This video explores "Yes, but how do the odd-numbered adapters (LA-EA1 and LA-EA3) behave when you're shooting video?" The answer is "it depends on your camera body - it will either focusing using really bad CD-AF or not at all."
On the plus side, when taking stills, all the great features such as subject tracking and Eye AF work just as well as if a native E-mount lens were used.
This video references an earlier video showing just how difficult it is for a camera to focus with the f/stop closed down (a theoretical problem that Sony has since overcome). The video is still worth watching just so you can understand how hard the problem was: • Focus Tracking Differe...

I am so glad that you are using my best lenses for the a mount system with the cameras I want to switch on :)
Really, really useful information nicely delivered.
Great video Gary: always informative, never biased :) One quick question though: Is the eye focus also supported by the A7III when using the LA-EA3 and a SSM lens? That'd be a big game changer!
The answer is yes!
Thanks for the video. How about a SIGMA 17-70 for sony A mount on the sony a6600 which one adapter should I chose. it has no scredriver... so i think i am done HOWEVER
the Tokina 11-16 has screw driver but does not move when i pull focus manualyy so? what should i do? will tokina and sigma work with La1?? please i need help
If you want only one adapter for both lenses, get the LA-EA2 or LA-EA4. (Or possibly the LA-EA5 but I don't know how well that plays with 3rd party lenses.)
I have a Sigma lens on my Sony A65 camera body. (APS-C)
What adaptor would I need to put this lens onto my Sony 6400 E mount mirrorless body.
Am confused.
If you're not sure, then the safest choice is either the LA-EA2 or LA-EA4.
I just bought an a6500 (still waiting for it to arrive) and I have 2 SAM A-mount lenses from my Sony a65 that I currently have. If I understand correctly from your last video and this one, I should be buying the LA-EA1 adapter correct? I assume this adapter will allow me to use the phase-detect AF, tracking etc of the a6500, but will the AF performance be a lot slower than with a native E-mount lens? Thanks!
Yes, you are correct! If you can't find an LA-EA1 then a LA-EA3 will work the same way. Don't forget this mandatory A6500 accessory: www.friedmanarchives.com/sony-a6500/ :-)
@FriedmanArchives thanks! Do you have any input regarding the general AF speed using the adapter vs an E-mount lens without the adapter?
@@cvgaming2020 It varies with the lens. Some of the AF examples in this video will give you a feel for just how slow it is. While I can't give a general speed difference, I will tell you that once you try a native E-mount lens you won't be tempted to go back to the adapted version. :-)
Thanks for sharing this video. is very informative, would you still recommend the a99ii in 2019? I'm considering buying one due to the affordable lenses for the a mount cameras. I mainly shoot portraits.
@@garyfriedman2005 thank you
For some reason I didn't see this question until just now. YES, even in 2021 I recommend the A99 II for portraits - it's actually the only camera I use in my studio due to its superior ergonomics. That body is he only reason I hang onto my A-mount glass.
I love how detailed you are! I watched this video and the previous one. Awesome work! I own a Sony Fs5. I would like to try out the Sony a-mount since they are cheaper than the Sony e-mount. However, I haven't seen any reviews on them anywhere. I would like to use them for weddings and events. So AF is essential. I'm leaning towards the LA-EA2 since I did see the Sigma 18-35mm (crop lens) for sale. Have you or your colleagues tried the LA-EA series on the Sony Fs5? Thank you!
The FS5 is a video camera, right? Full frame? You probably want to stay away from crop lenses. And I have no idea if the video cameras support the LA-EAx firmware.
Hi Gary, great videos that led me to buy the LA-EA1. I am curious if these adaptors adjust the equivalent focal length on APS-C bodies? I have a a6400, and my Sony 30mm f2.8 SAM A mount has an equivalent length of 35mm. Is this different with the adapter?
That Sony 30mm f/2.8 Macro SAM lens is a "DT" lens, which means it is designed for APS-C sensors. So no crop factor to worry about; it will behave like a 30mm lens on your A6400. (Except the focusing will be quite bit slower, as demonstrated in the video.)
@@FriedmanArchives thank you for the quick reply!!
well, the ea-la5 came out now. Does it work with a7 series mark2 or first a7 camera?
The LA-EA5 ONLY works on the A7R IV and A9 II. Not on the A7S III and not on the A7C. (I tried it.)
I have a Sony a99 (full frame A mount). If I want to attach E mount lenses, which adapter should I use?
For technical reasons you can't attach E-mount lenses to A-mount bodies.
Hey gary, i was wondering if I'd loose some light when i pair my sony F1.4 50mm with an Sony La-ea4 because of that translucent mirror in the adaptor. Is it worth it to get the sony F1.4 50mm A mount or should i just get the 50mm F1.8 e-mount for shooting in low light scenarios. Which lens is better? I don't want to loose light. Thanks gary😀
In theory, yes, you'll lose 1/3rd of a stop. In practice, you won't notice any meaningful difference. At no time in my professional career have I ever exclaimed, "Damn - if only I could eek 1/3rd of a stop more exposure out of this thing!"
Hi Garry thank you for a great Video
are the Adapters called Sony A to E not Sony E to A ❓
i have an Sony 77 mk 2 and have to use A mount lenses on my camera
The adapters are designed so you can still use your existing A-mount lenses on the newer e-mount bodies.
@@FriedmanArchives thank you but the title The Sony A-mount to E-mount LA-EA Adapters Explained are a bit comfusing
Which sony adapter is faster to autofocus with my a6000, the la-ea3 or la-ea1 ?
They should both focus with equal speed.
I have a Sony ZV-E10. I have a sony 70-400mm SSM II G Lens...it's full frame lens..Which adapter do I need? thank you
Since that video was made, Sony came out with a new adapter called the LA-EA5, and that is the one I recommend for the ZV-E10.
But will the la ea 1 work as well?
@@juliano191 Maybe. The firmware on a newer camera may not support it.
Please can you advise me where to E3 mount lenses for Sony video camera iwill be very grateful
Where to buy E 3 mount lenses for Sony video camera
Want the best autofocus. Get a good e-mount lens. The adapters are great though to use manual focus in video using you good a-mount lenses. And there are some lovely a-mount lenses out there.
I think it's a cost thing - the other is many of the lenses are screw driven. And the LEA4 is not going to tempt many A mount users
If Sony come up with something better it might. There are not only limited AF points (think A57 AF which is passable but below even the A77/99 models), in addition on most bodies (bar the A9 I believe) you get a low 2.5fps cont shooting rate - which is beaten even with the older DSLR's (budget ones)
If I priced up my A mount gear - it would cost a small fortune to re-buy those lenses on E mount. A whole heap of cash. The other problem is design/ergonomics - current bodies all have the same angular boxy feel with cramped controls.
Unless Sony up their game considerably, I see no reasons to consider E mount. If they continue with it, we don't know you can at the moment still buy stuff.
@@MrBazReviews considering the body build and form factor the new Panasonic S1 series is exactly what an A-mount body is.
Personally I love the feeling of the A-mount body therefore at the moment in ML I'm fully towards the L-mount Panasonic system.
Adding that the adapting of A-mount lenses on e-mount is tons of compromises compared to A native or E native and I don't see any rational reason not to consider all the contenders in ML.
Unless Sony is giving us an equivalent of LAEA4 with A99m2 technology 👌
This is sad that sony didn't make a screwdrive adapter for cameras with pdaf sensor like their whole new line up. It would be great to use something like beercan on new sony cameras but without ligth stealing slt adapter. Imagine that this old great minolta lenses with this crazy sony eye af. it would be awesome.
Jakub Zięciak Instead of making screwdriver adapters up to their current technology, it is so much better to screw their original Alpha customers by selling them a whole new line of lenses...
Amazing explanation. Thankyou very much Gary.
I then bought TAMRON SP 70-300mm DI USD A-mount. I use this on Sony A7Riv, with LA-EA3. This lense has motor drive right? but the AF does'n work, any explanation
A6400+LAEA1 can use real-time eye af ?
Thank.
Yes.
First my apologise for my Dutch-English. Second thanks for this exceptional good explanation. Despite that I do have a question. Since a while I do own a sony A7III (second hand) Because of a A77 bodie earlier, all my lenses do have a-mount (all full frame and not ssm/sam) so I purchased also the sony LA-EA4 adapter. Now my question (at last ;}): If I want to select a function as ISO, display or drive mode, the moment I push the center button at the control wheel I receive the message: Please attach a supported lens since the current lens is not supporrted. Is this a lack in the functioning of the adapter? And may be this not the only one because touch focus seems also not working.bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
Hi. With the LA-EA4, none of the advanced focusing modes (eye AF, touch AF) are going to work. But you should be able to change ISO!! So something is wrong. If cleaning the electrical contacts on both the lens and the adapter (and the camera) doesn't fix it, I recommend contacting Sony support. Hope this helps!
Ok. Thanks for this quick answer. Not realy an important issue, so be jt. May be with the Monster mainboard ?
@@FonTunnissen You have the monster adapter board? You didn't say that. That changes my answer, since all of the AF modes and touch operation should work with it. But I can't explain the inability to change ISO. Sorry I can't help!!!
No I didn't mention because i do not have one. yet. Considering your answer i certainly will purchase one. So, tanks again.
I love that original video! Wow a update!
Hey Gary, question..... I have a Minolta AF 400mm f4.5 HS APO lens. It works great on my A7iii with an LA-EA4, but when I attach the Minolta AF 1.4x tele converter II APO, I lose autofocus and have no fstop readout. What gives?
Rightly or wrongly, most teleconverters won't work on any LA-EA adapter. :-(
@@FriedmanArchives Bummer! Images will be better not using the TC. On the A7iii I can always use APSC mode. Thanks Gary!!
Have you experienced or aware of any sensor dust issues with (aps-c) Sony cameras? By that I mean dust particles which really hard to clean etc. In my situation, I have a6400+16-50 kit, never detached the lens, never was in any harsh weather conditions and always treated my gear with great care, and yet for some reason had some big nasty dust particles on sensor (after usual city walk with camera and taking pictures here and there). Blower didn't helped, dry cotton swab too, and only after 2-3 wet cleanings (I used vsgo kit) It was kinda ok (there's still dust but visible only at very tight apertures). Two different people at camera stores said me that this isn't kinda normal (particularly this situation when dust gets onto sensor in a camera where lens was never detached before), two people on Sony customer service line said that as well. I was beyond stressed out back then, very important video shooting was on the edge of canceling and now, Sony service recommended me to bring my camera for diagnostics and I'm afraid that they could cancel my warranty because of my attempts of sensor cleaning (which is kinda specified on their web site, that they really could do that), since they said only authorized service centers could do the cleaning, but at the time of my video shooting, nearest service was like 800km from me.
(all that situation is kinda sad because these cameras (a6xxx series) costs a small fortune for people in my region (and for me as well), and on top of all is overpriced by about $240, and I saved money for more than a year in order to buy it)
To answer your question, I have never experienced sensor dust that stubborn. My reactions are in line with the camera stores and sony repair folks.
Actually you just cleared up another question for me. I have the Sony A6000 (with little to no interest in videos). The question was: Can simply use manual focus instead (never assume)?
I can live with manual focus (I started with 35mm back in the 1960's) but I what the EFIX data sent from the lens back to the camera. .... Cheers.
Hmmm... Good question. I believe when in Manual Focus mode the camera body does not record the focusing distance the lens is set to.
I have the Sony A6100 mirroless camera and I also have the Sony A57 with a Sony 18 - 200 A-Mount lens (with a screw at the bottom) that I would like to use, after watching both of your videos I know to use the LA-EA 2 Sony adapter, my question is; when I use my Sony A57 with this lens it makes noise when focusing while shooting a video. will this happen with the Sony A6100 with the adapter?
Yes, you will hear the motor noise when shooting a video. That's why native E-mount lenses are vastly preferred when shooting video on E-mount bodies.
@@FriedmanArchives Thank you Gary, after watching your video I went on eBay and Amazon to do a price check on the adapter, I found the adapters just as expensive as the e-mount lenses, needless to say the price of a Sony Lens would be a wise choice rather than to buy the adapter. My Sony A6100 came with a 3.5-5.6/16-50 lens in the box, what lens would you recommend for blogging?
@@Marine_0317 I can't possibly make a recommendation on lenses, since the answer usually boils down to "It all depends on your intended use / light / distance / vision". Try the lens it came with first; and if it doesn't meet your needs for some reason you'll know in an instant what you need to change to fix it.
@@FriedmanArchives I will do that, Thank you for your time and your quick response.
I have read somewhere online that LAEA4 allow eye AF with A9 and A6400. Is that true?
@@garyfriedman2005 Thank you Mr. Friedman. You answered all my questions. Hope they will include this in a future firmware update
Is LAEA-1 dead or what is wrong with it? I don't see a significant price drop of used one on that so what is going on?
They stopped making it in favor of the LA-EA3 which works for either crop sensor or full-frame bodies.
@@FriedmanArchives Yep (1&3 and 2&4 story) and exactly my point. For the given deficits and newer upgrade, you would expect a significant price drop that didn't happen. That is what makes me wonder. Or is it that whatever Sony makes, or "Almost" has an abnormal high residual value and resale price?.... or was it only A5*** and A6000 that are sold that way. Honestly and for me who bought my first A6000 yeeeears back, with lens kit, on a BF, I paid almost 2/3 of what I can sell it today, that is after all these years of loyal use and service. I guess we love Sony too much or they are seriously ahead of market game/gimmicks.
Thanks for the videos! I want to confirm - I have an A6000, and I just bought a Zeiss 24-70 F2.8 A-mount lens. Should I get the LA-EA3? Will it maintain the phase-detect AF? or will it use contrast AF?
Yes, the LA-EA1 or LA-EA3 will meet your needs and use phase-detect AF.
The information I cannot find, and you did not state in your Part 1, is can the LA-EA3 control the aperture of the 135mm 1.8 ZA screw-drive lens? And does it allow the functionality of the lens' focus-hold button?
@@garyfriedman2005 thanks.
Yes, the LA-EA3 controls the apertures of most A-mount lenses. It won't control the apertures of the Minolta Xi power zooms and some rare third-party lenses.
Can you please tell to me how good is this adapter for auto tracking/focusing a fast-moving target using the sigma A 150 mm -500 f5 -500? is that asking to much?
Yes, that's asking for too much. For fast moving subjects at long focal lengths, a native FE lens will always be the best choice.
@@FriedmanArchives Yea I absolutely agree. But their aren't any real choices for Sony on long lenses except for the 2500 100 to 400 . The sogma 150 - 500 is made for sony A mount . That's the closest that I can get. Do you suggest that I return it ? Do you know of a better option at that range for shooting sporting events?

Hi Gary: Very informative video and clear explanations - Thank You! I am new to vlogging but am recently retired, and interested in creating vlogs about boating. I have a GoPro 8 and quickly realized I need two cameras. I've been looking at the ZX-1 but thought it might help my budget and provide much more flexibility if I bought an A6400 to use with the 3 A series lenses we have we've had for years. Cost with adapter would be about twice the ZX-1 but I don't have to buy more lenses (?) I know more about what works for me and I'd have a much better platform to build from if A lenses don't limit the A6400's performance too much. The lenses are a Minolta Maxxum 35-105 1:3.5-5.6, a Minolta Maxxum 100-300 1:4.5-5.6, and a Sony 18-55 3.5-5.6 SAM. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I emailed you with a very thorough reply. Hope it helps! GF
I'm still confuse (beginner)I have Sony SLT A33 for a long time and my friend gave me a 85mm sony E lens. Should i get La ea4 or 3? Or do i need it ? Please help me.
@@garyfriedman2005 thats so sad. So i cant use the 85mm . Thank you . :'(
Very neat
I have a question: hope you'll be able to answer it or soon.
Concerning AFC in still mode and burst. Do A-mount users finally have 10fps (at least) with tracking on A7 series 3? A7 Series 4? With laea3 or are we still stuck at 3 fps?
2.5 or 3 FPS: www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00059736
Hi Gary! I really appreciate your books and videos!
There’s one reason why I haven’t replaced my A77II with an A7III in combination with an LA-EA3 adapter: The focus tracking and eye autofocus seem to work flawlessly with my SSM lenses - but not in bursts! Only the first image will be in focus when an object is moving. I find this particularly annoying when shooting action like soccer. I can’t find any good information on that problem. Do you have any explanation or recommendations? Thanks a lot!
AF-C with adapted lenses is only supported at "Lo" continuous rate (2.5 FPS) except on the A9.
Can anyone confirm this la ea 4 works with nex 7
The native LA-EA4 works with the NEX-7. The modified "Monster adapter" does not because the NEX-7 does not have phase-detect AF pixels in the sensor.
Sony just announced LA EA5 which can use eye af with screw drive lenses
This guy is literary sensei of one of most complicated things i ever used. Why can't Sony use english in their cameras?! Who on earth gets what PP1, PP8 stands for? Is like engeeners made cameras for themselves... Anyway thanks alot for all help!
Seems to me that sports and wildlife shooters who have an a-mount camera, are pretty much out of luck when it comes to Sony producing anymore A-mount cameras. E-mount seems to be where they have moved and where they will continue to advance. I've spoken to Sony and they always say the same thing.."We are committed to A-mount and we never plan on abandoning it." Well that is exactly what they have done and are doing, so I can only believe that they say this in order to keep selling their remaining a-mount cameras and lenses. As many have stated, most a-mount shooters have invested a lot of money into a-mount lenses, and now that Sony has decided to no longer upgrade the a-mount line, the value of these a-mount lenses and bodies have dropped significantly, making it even more difficult to make the switch to e-mount. Looks like I will be selling off all of my a-mount stuff before it completely loses all its value and starting over with an e-mount camera and one e-mount lens and waiting until I can afford an e-mount long lens which I presume will be coming out shortly from Sigma, Tamron and Tokina. And it's not like I can switch back to Canon or Nikon, they are going the same route with their mounts on their mirrorless bodies! Adapters are confusing and never work to give you full functionality. Sad...
But why if you're building a very new system from scratch aren't you considering all the contenders?
Currently the ML body that is giving A-mount body ergonomics and feeling is the Panasonic S1 series and the L-mount system benefits of the best of the best IQ with Leica in this mount.
Then after in terms of ergonomics and lens I'd put Canon ML mount without a doubt.
Sony E glass are good but now in my opinion their glass are superseded by the competition.
Where Sony has the edge is with AF, but the competition will catch up on this too.
If you reset and go from scratch think with a vision of 10 years. SLT technology is abandoned by Sony and is only 9 years old.
Personally I have just bought myself a Tamy 15-30/2.8 for my A99m2. When Panasonic is delivering an L-mount UWA lens f2.8 I'll go their route no doubt.
Gary,.. i have am Sony A5100 and a 50mm F1.4(SAL50F14) what adapter i should use for filmaking...thank you in advance if you could help. LA EA1????
