    I still shoot A mount and have been hoping for this for a very long time. I have a bunch lenses as I came from Minolta when Sony took over the system and have added many Sony A mount lenses as well. Felt kinda like I was at a dead end with my A99ii but now a smooth transition looks like a sure thing. This is the best news I've had with regards to just about everything since mid March. 👍

And also have picture in picture in the EVF/LCD when doing focus magnification so that one can see the zoomed in portion and also at the same time see a smaller box overlayed in the corner with the full composition (basically like it works in Play mode when zooming in).

    • @jorismak
      @jorismak 4 года назад

      @@PMRTV I'm afraid there will be no firmware update for the LA-EA5 for older bodies (maybe because of hardware support, maybe because of not supporting it anymore outright).
      That half-a stop of light is actually less than half a stop, and as everyone with a SLT camera can tell you: It's not the problem :).
      The old 7 or 9 point AF-point array-module with terrible alignment issues is the problem.
      I don't have a problem with speed, I have a problem with focusing _accuracy_. That's why I moved away from DSLRs, and here is hoping someone will make a working A-mount adapter that uses on-chip phase detection for the A7 II generation.

    I have a7Riv and numerous A-mount lenses, all SSM. These all work perfectly coupled with my LA-EA3 WHILE SHOOTING STILL IMAGES (I see absolutely zero limit on AF speed & capability while shooting stills). The only limitation I've found with the LA-EA3 and SSM lenses is there's no AF while shooting video. I was hoping the LA-EA5 would fix that, but looks like no AF with video. So, am I wrong to conclude that the new LA-EA5 offers ZERO benefit over the LA-EA3 for SSM lenses? It simply adds screw drive AF capability. No other reason for me to get it, since I own no screw drive lenses. Please correct me if I'm wrong but for my use I see no reason whatsoever for me (with only SSM lenses) to "upgrade" my LA-EA3. I was really hoping this new unit would unlock AF in Movie Mode. The only possible reason to restrict video AF is to force sales of E-mount lenses.

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  4 года назад +1

      ifyou don't hav any screw-drive glass, there is less a reason to get the newer adapter. Many love the 135mm f/1.8 Zeiss and other lenses and it was a huge thing for them. One last footnote... As the LA-EA5 is a new product, Sony will continue to do FW updates on it as they develop newer cameras etc... It's important to note this as the LA-EA3 has been discontinued as the newer version is clearly superior. Performance increases are part of the future for current products.

    Thank you for making this video. In your experience, is the (a9/a9ii +la-ea5+minolta 300 2.8 hs apo g or 80-200 hs apo g combo) as fast on autofocus, reliable on tracking, etc.. as the a99ii with the same lenses?

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  3 года назад +1

      Adapted lenses are just that, adapted. I think a99II would be better than even a1 on older SSM and Screw-drive glass. 10 fps is clunky, it starts late every time you want to start shooting a frame or sequence. There is no magic pill to transform your A mount glass into a GM lens. Asking even the a9II or a1 to dumb itself down to work with a lens whose roots are from the 1990's is never going to satisfy in the same way as a GM lens on a modern camera. The screw drive AF lenses in particular suffer from this distance between 1990 and 2021. They are good for portraits and event shooting but maybe not so much sports photography. I'd rather use a 200-600G at a night high school football game than a Sony 300mm f/2.8 SSM II lens. I'd rather edit through hundreds of perfectly sharp albeit noisy frames than walk away from that game with just a few keepers. the a99II is still a relevant camera--just don't every try out an a9II or a1.... Hope this isn't too depressing a message. I know many of you have a fortune invested in A glass and it was awesome back in the day, but SONY has pushed so fast and hard to produce lenses that are far better in every respect since A mount. Sad but true...

      Patrick, that 200 to 600 looks like a daytime beast. At 5.6 to 6.3, how high are you pushing your iso at night on a high school field with less than great lighting? I shoot a lot of lacrosse in these conditions. It's an interesting challenge as the game moves like basketball/ hockey and the shooters swing and shoot in the 90 to 100 mph range. I usually have to shoot 2.8 in order to keep iso to a useable range while freezing shooters.

Not much of a point buying the EA5 if you already have the EA3 with A-mount SSM lenses. But if you have deep pockets and lots of the older Minolta/Sony lenses that are screw-driven, the it is certainly worth buying the EA5... and a Sony A7RIV. With the LA-EA4 that has been available for YEARS, it has a very limited AF module from 2010 (similar to A33/A55) and performance is somewhat acceptable but not outstanding. All the focal plane focus point go to waste with the LA-EA4. Now this LA-EA5 is something that we dual A/E-mount shooters has been asking for years. It offers the capability to use focal plane focus point with non-SSM/SAM lenses. This is the final bridge between A and E-mount users.

    I really don't know how I feel about this! I'm an original Sony shooter, right back from the A100, and I'm still shooting the A99ii, and have just discovered how amazing the focus tracking is on my new 500 F4 Sony (phenomenal!). I also have the Zeiss 85 1.4 (it is indeed a magnificent lens, but the purple fringing is terrible). I've held off on moving to E-mount for a number of reasons, one huge one being that I have a lot of glass that I couldn't really use all that well, but mostly really because I like the A-mount form factor so much better. While this adapter doesn't sort out the teeny little grip problem, it does seem like it might make the focussing even better on some of the lenses I have. This could drive the price up of some of my bucket list Sony A-mount lenses too. Hmmmm...

      @@MrBazReviews The new body on the A7Riv seems like a move in the right direction at least, although I haven't physically held that one. I played with an A7iii a while ago and didn't like it at all. I think it's going to be a LONG time before the A99ii doesn't meet my needs though, so I've got a few years left to hope!

    • @bobdriscoll3310
      @bobdriscoll3310 4 года назад

      @@MrBazReviews I think we're on the exact same page. An A99iii and an A77iii would be incredible cameras, but the ii versions were also incredible cameras and no-one knew about them (I would put the A77ii up against any APS-C camera, only a couple in the last year or two would best it I think). I think Sony made the right choice for the company and put their eggs in the mirrorless basket, which has been a fantastic move for Sony, but a real shame for people who had the cameras and lament the line ending with them. A lot cheaper and easier to make an adapter than invest in a new body that potentially drags people away from their mirrorless line, but a shame for us!

    • @bobdriscoll3310
      @bobdriscoll3310 4 года назад

      @@MrBazReviews I could see it too, but I've never liked going with the norm (I wouldn't have chosen my first DSLR to be the A100 otherwise!), and the SSS was back then and still now a feature I don't like to do without at all. People don't really talk about the accessories and miscellaneous cost of switching systems completely either - eg. I now have 5 batteries that I can interchange between all my bodies, but to buy that many batteries in a new system would be way more than I could afford.
      I really needed to upgrade from my A77ii though, as it had started freezing up on burst mode, and also for the dual card slots, so I could be completely confident when doing a big paid job I had coming up. I was lucky enough to get a really good deal 2nd hand on an a99ii, and I love it so much I think I would probably even purchase a 2nd one before I move to mirrorless! It's really like a fine-tuned A77ii, outstanding camera. Coming to grips with how good the hybrid focus is on my new 500 f4 (a lens I could have never dreamed of owning!) means I can't see me leaving for a long time!

      @@PMRTV Not yet, but that definitely seems like a good step forward. The A7C move back to even smaller seems scary as a step in the roadmap, although if they settle on the A7C size as a small version and A7Riv or bigger as a larger version that might be good.

    First, thanks for your review..Nice pictures shot. But I was a bit shocked hearing you telling us that this is the first time ever that you can use old lenses and use their autofocus with a FE camera. Are you new to Sony? I wonder how you could miss the fact that the LA-EA4 already had a screwdrive connector ans YES, you CAN adapt old Minolta and Sony lenses with the old focusing system for autofocus to it. I use it frequently.

    • @PMRTV
      @PMRTV  4 года назад +1

      1. you could never use Real Time Tracking before now with LA-EA5. 2. You can now use screw-drive glass WITHOUT shooting through the mirror in the LA-EA4. You gain about 2/3rds a stop of light by not shooting through the pellical mirror. And, while I haven't been shooting all that long (2012), I sometimes know what I'm talking about :)

    • @lebaptiste3162
      @lebaptiste3162 4 года назад

      ok, now ypu're changing the story. You have never mentioned the mirror before or in your vid. I didn't want to offend you, but I just wondered why you did not mention the ea4. It's all fine buddy. I have to say, I wanted the la-ea5 really bad until i've found out that there's only a handful of lenses which the autofocus will actually work with. I could be wrong but as much as I could see, also not a single Minolta lens is AF supported. Which makes the new adapter really useless to me. Have you maybe had the chance to test the new adapter with legacy lenses and can you confirm this?

    • @chuckfinley2023

      @@lebaptiste3162 From the research I have done every lens is supported, but only the high end camera's. A7R4, A6600 and A9II. Dig into the compactivity matrix again using those cameras.

      And that's exactly the problem. I get no screw-drive AF with my a7RIII and a7III with this adapter which is Sony's way to tell to screw you if you're not willing to upgrade. Sad but true. I can only hope they make "older" cams compatible too.
