    Thanks for taking the time to show this! I have the A7R2, LA-EA4, and the Minolta 80-200 HS. LOVE the combo. Focuses VERY fast. I would not give up that AF speed for the additional focus area. I grew up with film and use center focus and then hold five us and reframe so not a problem.

      @@MrBazReviews The real issue is that nobody can understand/explain how come LAEA4R "can work" or sort of with bodies from mark II and in the meantime LAEA5 official is only restricted to the latest and expensiviest bodies only...

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews 3 года назад

      @@actionphotopassion5082 I think it's more a slap in the face for users! If this is the exit strategy for A mount - it's not a very useful one. I think they restricted the use of the adapters (for reasons unknown), the LAEA4 works on most (bar the A1) but it's dated 15 point AF whilst usable isn't really very appealing (I have one myself it's OK but nothing more). The monster shows that more could be done even with older bodies.
      Not sure why they hold it back, because plenty of Canon users adapting lenses. So there is nothing to be gained in limiting the adapters. I think it just annoys A mount users and probably isn't he best way to get them to buy into E mount.
      Just going forward I don't think the LAEA5 is going to be widespread support. If that's the case I'd wager some users will just give up on Sony entirely, can't say I blame them

    Thank you, Gary! Personally I wish you had compared the LA-EA5 with the unmodified LA-EA4! Or the LA-EA4 compared with the LA-EA4r on an older body like the A7III. As I understand it, the main reason for the LA-EA4r is better focusing on older E mount bodies, other than the A1, A7rIV, A7IV and A7rV. If one owns one of these newer bodies, I don't see any reason to spend $200 on the Monster upgrade kit when the LA-EA5 currently only costs $25 more! Btw, it seems to me the LA-EA5 performed a bit better in your demo. I switched to the FE mount with the original A7 and at that time I purchased both the LA-EA3 and LA-EA4, the 3 for my SSM lenses and the 4 for my old MInolta screw drive lenses. Both worked just find with that camera. Of course the reality is that most newer E mount lenses are smaller, lighter and just focus better than my old A mount lenses. I wouldn't want to travel with my AF 70-200mm f2.8 SSM anymore. I'd rather just take my Tamron 28-200mm f2.8-5.6 Di III RXD!. My old Minolta 70-210 f4 with adapter? Maybe with the LA-EA5 on my A7rV? Don't know if that lens is up to snuff with the 61 Mp sensor.

    • @FriedmanArchives
      @FriedmanArchives  4 месяца назад

      I did lots of comparisons with the LA-EA4 and LA-EA4r in other videos. The upshot is that nothing performs better on an E-mount body than a native E-mount lens. Adapted A-mount lenses have various drawbacks - either fewer AF points, or slower/worse AF and object tracking.

    @EagerSnake 8 месяцев назад +1

    Great video, as ALWAYS, but, I have a question Gary: what do you mean the LAEA5 is only compatible with 3 bodies?
    I was reading Sony's website, and it says it's compatible with all the bodies they have, but with limitations. I'm looking to buy it for an old Minolta AF 70-300, and now I have my doubts hahaha.

    • @FriedmanArchives
      @FriedmanArchives  8 месяцев назад +1

      Regretfully, Sony's website (specifically support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/cscs/accessories/compatibility.php?area=eu&lang=en&mdl=LA-EA5&cat=3&loc=en_GB ) is horribly misleading. They even list their oldest E-mount cameras like the NEX-3 as being "compatible", even though technically there's no phase detect AF in the sensor that would allow autofocus to work. The only camera bodies that will work properly are the A6600, A7R IV, and every camera body made after that except the A7C and A7S III. And keep in mind that the LA-EA5 doesn't support autofocusing with video, no matter what the camera body it's attached to.

    I bought A7IV and LA-EA5. I have an A Mount, Screw drive, 135 Zeiss Sonnar lens. When I use these together, I see the focus point lock onto objects, but the focus does not change from one point to another. It remains out of focus. With my LA-EA4 it worked perfectly. I hoped to gain eye auto focus with the LA-EA5, but it does not focus at all. This is the second LA-EA5 I purchased. I sent the first back thinking I had a bad model. The LA-EA5 on my A7RIII does not see the lens at all, no aperture reading. I have searched the web and gone through every menu setting to see if I need to change a focus setting somewhere. I also searched to see if there is a firmware update for the A7IV. None. And I cannot find any firmware at all for the 135 Zeiss Alpha mount. I thought I would reach out to you since you know so much about these adapters.

      Don't remember; as this was a couple of years ago. I'll tell you that nothing will be faster than the LA-EA4; the only benefit to using the monster adapter is you can use advanced features like Eye AF / Subject recognition / tracking which you can't do with the official Sony adapters because they insist on using just the center focusing point with that particular lens. See my other test videos at friedmanarchives.blogspot.com/2021/05/my-last-post-about-monster-adapter-la.html

  • @AgnostosGnostos
    @AgnostosGnostos 3 года назад +3

    The monster adapter is obviously by far slower but the benefit of gaining 1/3 or 2/3 stop of light and the multi point focusing with nearly all e-mount cameras is very important.
    The LA-EA5 was introduced in October 2020. The a7C was introduced a month before in September 2020 and the a7S III a little earlier in July 2020. Certainly both these cameras were developed alongside the LA-EA5 and they should be fully compatible. However not even the recent latest Sony ZV-E10 e-mount camera introduced in July 2021 is fully compatible with the LA-EA5.
    At least the flagship Sony a1 is compatible. It would be a shame if it wasn't. I believe that after one or two years, all new e-mount cameras will have advanced autofocus systems with full compatibility.
    I hoped that LA-EA5 would permit autofocus with official Sony a-mount teleconverters on Sony a-mount cameras but I was hoping for too much. Maybe a firmware update will change that.
    Finally according to many posts on the official monster adapter Facebook group, the camera should be always switched off when attaching or removing the adapter because cases of camera damage were reported.
    I personally for decades have the habit of removing the battery before changing lenses or adapters for 100% safety. Even with the camera switched off, some power may be used for writing the memory card or charging the internal clock battery, or some capacitors are charging etc.

    • @FriedmanArchives
      @FriedmanArchives  3 года назад +2

      Removing the battery to change lenses is a tad bit overkill - it's like removing the battery to plug in a USB cable. Sure, in the days of RS-232 it could cause spurious bit-error problems, but the lens mounts and USB interface were both designed to eliminate those problems. I agree that ti's a shame that only the A7R IV and A1 work with the LA-EA5.

      The LA-EA5 works well for SSM lenses on any E-mount body, only limited by the AF of that body - so you’ll get better AF with your favourite A-mount SSM lens with the LA-EA5 on your A9 than with your A7.
      The restriction to A6600, A7R4 & A1 only applies to screw-driven lenses like the three that Gary demonstrated here.

      I haven’t noticed if there are any functional differences relating to the two adapters with my SSM lenses - maybe support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/cscs/accessories/compatibility.php?area=ap&lang=en&mdl=ILCE-7M3&cat=7#notes_adp_0 might show whether the 5 unlocks anything new with your A7iii.

      Hi,
      From experience using the Monster adapter on a A7II body: it is possible to shoot birds in flight with the 500mm f8 lens. Wide area focus actually works well enough when the target is near infinity. No hunting when the camera figures out what you're shooting « far away ». The combo also works for birds which are closer, but stationary.
      One last benefit using this adapter: Minolta’s old but good f2.8 primes (20, 24, 28, 135, 200mm HS) work well with it. And are much cheaper than Sony E mount equivalent lenses, if they exist at all.
      Drawbacks: focusing is slow on some lenses, regardless of available light.
      But for someone with a less-than-cutting edge body, the Monster adapter is a good value :)

      They are exactly the same lens. Exactly AF driven the same way with the pin-screw... So I don't even see any reason why the Sony version should be AFing faster.
      If there would be a difference, it would be the coatings used... Except of this they are exactly the same lenses.
      OTOH even if we can welcome the effort to unleash the full potential of sensor AF with LAEA-4R, I can't imagine it able to track birds. On native A-mount cameras , the exercise is possible but still this lens is pretty slow to AF. So with LAEA-4R I wouldn't hold my breath for that.
