I bought the LA-EA4 adapter since it does the old screw drive lenses. That should work for SSM lenses as well from what i read. This is also on an a6000.

That was a lens of my friend, he is the true die hard fans of A-mount, and he even "re-build" the vintage manual lenses over 70 years old on the Minolta AF50/1.4, which make it be able to autofocus on A-mount cameras. Half of the 30 lenses on the table were mine, and I usually kept the SSM/HSM/USD lenses since they are smoother to pull focus. I was a videographer since Sony announced the DSLT-a55 and NEX-VG10 10 years ago, in the past I use the A-mount lenses for my career, and I finally moved all my lenses/camera to E-mount since the a7m3 announced.
@M Tech not exactly, a7III and a7sIII outperform in ergo while compare to my old a99II, more customisable buttons and menu, also more precise in tracking AF. Although the Gen 2 SSM lenses were told to be 4 time faster tracking on the a99II, but a7III with an EA3 adapter can kill it easily in this stage. Releasing a new adapter to let the legendary A-mount lenses to enjoy the latest features on the E-mount system is still a good move for Sony.
@M Tech Add a little leather grip to the a7 series can easily fix the ergo of the grip, I don't think the top LCD is important since the LCD/EVF already showing all information, even I would flip out the LCD for shooting all the time.
Hi, great video, special thanks to the original AF noise and speed comparison! I missed these two superb lenses: - Minolta High Speed AF APO Tele 200mm f/2.8 G (white) - SONY 135mm 1.8 Sonnar T* ZA (SAL135F18Z) (AF only with LA-EA4 so far) greetings
markintosh13 AFS is faster on a99II with its dual cross sensor and AF illuminator, especially on the object with low contrast. However, tracking performance on EA5 overtake the former a lot, also more stable and steady when locking on the focus.
@Tom Cass Yes a99II does not have an AF illuminator, and it only matters when you are using center spot and AF-S. For tracking AF the EA5/a7r4 is much faster than a99II, especially with the SSM/USD lenses. If you own much of the SSM/USD lenses like SAL70-400G, SAL70-200G, SAL300F28G, Tamron 150-600G2, that's worth for a try to upgrade your camera to a7m3/a7r4 and the LAEA5.
This video has just made me a rich man in lenses. Some people have spoken against using a converter but you hade given me hope. I can now use my a mounted lenses on my A7R4 (not just in manual) these are so much cheaper. Thank you!
Wow~ that Minolta 300mm f2.8 HS is amazing!! wish you could make video shooting portrait with that lens! I always wanted one but I could never find enough review about that lens. Thanks.
Encouraging results. I've pre-ordered the adapter for my A7R4 and Sigma 500 f/4.5, which has been rendered more or less useless with the LA-EA4, but the optics on that lens are so nice that I can't sell it. I see this adapter as possibly breathing new life into that $4500 purchase, a good investment.
OUTSTANDING WORK! I would have LOVED to see some skin tones on these old lenses! Even though these old lenses may not have the resolution or color accuracy of newer units I find some of the older lenses have unique color shifts that can be very interesting and creative for unique cases. Any plans for human tests?
Thank you for all this patient work. Makes me wish I had held onto the Minolta lenses from my time of shooting with a Maxxum 9000... the 85/1.4 seems to work very well, and I'll bet the 100/2, 135/2.8, and 200/2.8 would also. Alas, sold all years ago when it seemed Minolta would never produce a competitive digital SLR...
Excellent work!!!! This LA-EA5 now gives ZOMBIE POWERS to my beloved minoltas - I am glad i kept them! No reason why you can't repurchase those lost luvs!?!
@@rafaelbaca7713 I guess I could, but the 85 is expensive now, and the 100 is both rare and expensive... plus I don't really like the Sony bodies so much (they should have had the guys they got from Minolta work on those too!)

I used to have it 15 years ago when I was started learning the photography, of coz that’s a legend as it has similar optical design of the Minolta/Leica collaborated MD70-210/4. It was shamed that I couldn’t have it in the test🥲
So glad I found this video, I have 19 Sony, Minolta, Tamron and Tokina lenses that I use with my old a900, a850 and a couple of a77's and I thought they would all become manual focus lenses if and when I pick up a Sony mirrorless body and EA-5 adapter. Good to know they will still AF with the LA-EA5 adapter unlike my old Nikon and 3rd party Nikon lenses with Nikon's Z adapter that'll only focus manually! This means I can still pursue bird photography with my Minolta AF 500 f/8 Mirror lens and my Tamron SP 200-500 f/5-6.3 lenses and macro with my Sony 50 f/2.8, 100 f/2.8 and Tamron 180 f/3.5 macro lenses plus I still have AF. Whooooopie! Dude, we have a lot of the same lenses!

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this I’m still debating if I should spend $250 on the LA-EA5 adapter for my A mount lenses but I won’t be selling them since they depreciated so much. Great video thx again. You earned a sub
It’s great with still photo shooting, make the old legendary Minolta lenses in benefit with the latest AF technology, I’m highly recommend this adapter if you have those camera compatible with it.
The smaller screw drive lenses fared reasonably but nowhere near as smoothly as the sony, sigma and even tamron lenses with inbuilt silent motors. Still grateful for the little motor in the LA-EA5. Lovely demonstrations.
Wow, what a great collection! I'm still waiting for when/if updates firmware for this adapter so I can use screw drive on my A7iii. But I'll have to confirm first that all my other adapters will still work, ie, MC-11, Fotdiox, Techart, etc.. have heard rumors firmware update will kill those (kills af).
Got a "Beercan" today for 45 Euro, shipping included. As mentioned earlier, have TZE-01 already. The TZE-01 has to be slightly modified to fit on Nikon Z50... and ultimately the Z50 got passed to my wife while I got an old Nikon Z6. Not really ready to pay extra for the Z6-II, Z6 (and ultimately the Z7 first version) is just fine for me. I tried Nikon Z6 with many lens and adapter combinations, it works wonderfully. Now all I need to test the "Beercan" is the LA-EA5. I see one used on the fee-Bay, maybe more will pop up.
I thought I had a bad case of gear acquisition syndrome but I think I’ve just found the world champion. No judgement, I’ve bought hundreds of thousands of pounds worth over the years but I try and pass it off as a business expense. (Maybe some of the kit isn’t absolutely a necessity). Are these your actual kit or stock from a camera store? Just thinking that there is absolutely no way in hell you need multiple primes covering every mm of focal length and 5 zooms for every zoom range. I’d also say looking at how milky the 80-200 is there’s something wrong with it, fungus maybe?
Most of the tele lenses were borrowed from Mr. Shek, and some of the lenses were mine. That was my actual kit since producing video was my career. The 80-200 was a defected copy, a normal copy should be much better than that.
Fine review as far as it goes. One of the things I want to know as a guy with a lot of A-mount glass and a Sony 99m2 is how the A7RIV and LAEA5 combination is at implementing Real Time tracking and Eye-AF tracking and whether it offers any advantage over the LAEA3/A7RIV combination for those specific functions. Would like to see a demo of how Real time tracking/EyeAF tracking works with A-mount lenses. The EyeAF in my A99m2 does not work well with many of my A-mount lenses.
There is no difference when you using the LAEA3 or LAEA5 with the SSM/SAM lenses. The eye-AF/tracking performance is much better when those A-mount lenses attached on the E-mount cameras equipped with the "Real-time tracking" feature. The only advantage on a99II is single spot AFS and sightly faster AF motor speed.
Congratulations on the tests carried out. I have a problem I have a Sony alpha7-iv camera with LA-EA5 adapter to be able to use my 5 A mount lenses . The only lens that doesn't work is the Tamron SP 180 macro !! In your video this lens works well with your sony alpha7R-iv and adaptor. Can you help me understand if there is a solution? Thank you. Joseph
Hi Joseph Sometimes some batches of the lens cannot compatible with the LAEA adapters, just like my Sigma 50/1.4 Art wasn't supported by the LAEA adapters too, but some ppl said it could, therefore I send the email to ask Sigma for a solution then they arranged a firmware upgrade to me from the local dealer. I'm not sure will Tamron provide such service, or rather the firmware of SP180macro is upgradable, but I think you can give it a try. Thank you, Henry
@@HWGearStory Hi Henry thanks for your suggestion. I will try to write to Tamron explaining my problem and sending them the link of your test. Dobra robota. Film ten pomógł mi w podjęciu decyzji o kupnie adaptera Sony LA-EA5. Dziękuję :)
Interestingly, great to see the later " Sonnar T's " in action. However one notable thing :: my Minolta 80-200 apo HS G ( the white body version) has no foggyness like the one you tested ( in fact behaviour, Sharpness & colour rendering is more like the later Sony 70-200 you tested next ) 🤔
I’m not sure if your lens works perfectly with other adapter or cameras, but it should be a little bit more hazy while compare with those new lenses in nowadays standard.
Great video. I have an a99ii with a sony 70-400g2, 2470z2.8 mk1, tamron 15mm f2.8 and laowa 15mm f4 wide macro. Debating an a7r4. Intrigued at how the 15mm tamron would do with the la-ea5. I only use it for astrophotography really so AF performance isn't that important with it, I'm used to manual focusing anyway with my older wide angle samyang manual focus lens.
I doubt image quality would be improved on the a7m4 and LAEA5 without the translucent mirror👍 You can also test with 70400G2 and 2470ZA with the continuous AF speed, it feels like a reborn.
Yes, the adapter works very very well. However...on the A7RIV...some folks are going to be disappointed with the images made by older A-mount lenses. The Sony A7RIV reveals every weakness a lens has. I'd suggest shooting in crop mode at 26MP instead. Once you put on an E-Mount lens like my 135mm f/1.8 ... it's hard to go backward. Not a tiny step backwards either. The older lenses are still fun to shoot with this adapter...as long as you realize there isn't a chance you'll make better images.
135mm f1.8 is a bad example, since the Sony Zeiss 135mm f1.8 Sonnar stands up to this sensor resolution and many people overall prefer the look of that lens over any native e-mount 135. Of course the main downside would be the screw drive autofocus, not for portraits though.
I would add "legendary fullframe A-mount lenses" to this amazing video title". Since i'm on aps-c system i know there is some aps-c gems missing but this is a great video! i wonder why you didn´t have a sal70300g ssm to show. I started choosing only SSM HSM and USM lenses for aps-c but i do owm some fullframe gems that you showed.
I'm still waiting to migrate to mirrorless from my Canon and Nikon DSLRs. I'm waiting for the market to settle, maybe until 2025. I want full frame. I'm inclined to Canon and Sony, but the Canon lens situation is less than ideal (banning third party lenses). Sony have an open mount to third party and you can adapt Canon EF and Nikon F (AF-S) to Sony cameras. I have seen very very cheap A mount lenses, like five minutes ago i saw a 100-200mm f4.5 for $30usd in fb marketplace. I'm seriously thinking to buy a Sony DSLR and start buying A mount lenses now and then go with Sony mirrorless adapting everything. I mean, even with some quirks and small annoyances, you can get old Canon EF, Nikon F and Sony A lenses for near to nothing and adapting them to Sony E cameras.
Although I'm a hardcore a-mount fans, but I really not recommend to buy a-mount lenses for now, unless you really love it or it had something meaningful to you. The native lenses perform much better, smaller and really not that expensive in second hand. With LA-EA5 you can unleash the modern AF power on the old school a-mount lenses, but it seems a little bit waste on the camera itself if you're not going to use the native lenses. Due to the focusing motor design, the old a-mount lenses aim to focus fast in the AF-S mode, but they couldn't catch up in the AF-C/tracking mode with the modern lenses with linear motor design. If you use the a-mount lenses in transition to the mirrorless, or some posed portrait and landscape, that should be fine and doing a good job.
@@HWGearStory It's about the price. A used camera like an A7RII or a A7III, plus adapters allows me to buy good enough lenses for less than $100usd. I mean long zoom with constant aperture, good portrait ones, etc. Similar lenses in native E mount cost from $1500usd and up. Only cheap ones are the portrait chinese primes from Viltrox and other brands. But good fast zooms are pricey, and photography it's only a hobby for me, so I prefer to spend $30usd instead of $1000usd 😅
@@amermeleitor a7rII and a7III won't get those cheap screw driver lenses work on LAEA5, if you are going to use LAEA4 it comes with a very old PDAF module and performs like an old DSLR. A-mount SSM lenses will work on a7III and LAEA3/5 but the 2nd hand price would not be cheap. however there are many budget friendly E-mount lenses, like Tamron 17-28/2.8, 28-75/2.8 and 70-180/2.8. Actually I would prefer Tamron 28-200/2.8-5.6 if you're a hobbyist of photography, this all-rounder lens is about $699 and you should be able to find a cheaper one in 2nd hand market. It works so well with the a7III indeed.
Hi, thanks for the great work. Myself I have a bunch of A mount lenses and A7IV on the way, so for sure I will be getting LA-EA5. Have you tried eye af on those screw driven lenses (like zeiss 85 1,4 for example)? Take care
Nice you did all these Legacy lenses, but no Beercan? The famous/infamous Minolta 70-210mm f/4? And how does the LAE-5 compare in focusing speed to the LAE-4? And is the focusing area still that tiny grid in the center? i don’t expect magic, but it’s be nice to see a big improvement in performance, but even a little would be helpful.
I've just received my LA-EA5 adaptor. But he doesn't work on my Sony A7III and my minolta lenses 50mm F1/7, 50mm F3.5 macro, my sigma 70-200 F2.8. Which Firmware use you ? I have the last I think : version 3.1 He work fine with my SSM and SAM lenses. Have-you some advices for help me ? Thank's
Very jealous. I wish Sony hadn't messed it up by putting the logic for driving this thing into the Camera, making useless for us with lower budgets and the A7iii :( On the bright, side, it's a nice gesture that the support old A-Mount glass. I feel like there is potential for making an adapter that pretends to be an e-moutn lens, with AF support and a silent AF motor.
Thanks for detail test. However, use only the center focus point. LA_EA4 can do the same thing. Would like to know the performance of side focus point and tracking especially the eye/face detection.
Philip Mok I used the center point for selecting the object I want to lock on, however it’s a full screen tracking and you can see the little square locking to the object, even I pan or tilt the camera.
At the moment I enjoy the fact that everyone wants e-mount. Since I only use my Sony Alpha 77ii for photography and don't need 4k video, I can get cheap used a-mount lenses. I recently bought a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 for about 300€. The next lens will be a 85mm 1.4 =)
Regarding The LA EA 5 this has replaced The LA EA-4 basically the same 15 point AF and controls The LA EA-5 is redesigned for later A7 models The 4 was designed for older A7 models but not much between them
Not all Minolta a-mount lenses are screw driven. Some of the latest Minolta lenses like the Minolta AF Apo Tele 300mm f/2.8 G (D) SSM have internal autofocus motor and probably the autofocus works with the LA-EA5 adapter as with LA-EA3 adapter. For screw driven Sony or Minolta lenses the LA-EA5 is pointless because it works only with a6600 and a7R IV cameras which are very expensive. Also the a7S III and a7C are younger models than the a6600 or a7R IV. The LA-EA5 doesn't permit autofocus with screw driven lenses on the a7C and a7S III. Just check the compatibility section of the Sony website with title: LA-EA5 35-mm Full-Frame A-Mount Adapter. This is weird. Will it continue with the following e-mount models? There is though a hack with a third party Chinese monster adapter LA-EA4r that permits the removal of pellicle mirror of the adapter without loosing autofocus.
There were only 2 SSM driven lenses produced by Konica Minolta: 300/2.8GDSSM and 70-200/2.8GDSSM The autofocus performance of the SSM lenses on LAEA3 and LAEA5 should be same, they also utilize the realtime tracking and eye-AF on my latest a7s3 In this moment the LAEA5 is only supporting the screw driven lenses on a6600 and a7r4, it also requires the latest firmware The third party LAEA4r is only a circuit board and it still require the original LAEA4, the upgrade cost is high if you don't have the LAEA4, also it needs to wait for the updates by its manufacturer to let the monster supports more lenses, which LAEA5 doesn't requires, the latter only need updates on the camera side.
HW Gear Story Thank you for the reply. The LA-EA5 is one of the reasons why the Sony a7R IV will be my next full frame e-mount camera. I am just waiting for an offer of Sony a7R IV or a significant official price drop. Also the Angenieux autofocus zoom a-mount lens was a revelation for me. I didn't know that such a lens existed. I was under the impression the LA-EA5 didn't work with some of these AF lenses, especially the 500mm mirror lens, because they don't have internal AF motors. Is that not the case?

Until now, only a7IV, a7rIV, a1 and a6600 support AF with screw driven lenses on the LA-EA5, both a9 and a7III cannot work with AF on that, and I recommend to get an a7IV with AF supports on the screw driven lenses, also a better price than the a1.

The LA-EA5 will not focus screw-drive lenses on an A7Rm2, only the A7Rm4, if you only have motorised lenses (SSA, SAM etc) the LA-EA5 will do the job (as will the LA-EA3). Currently the LA-EA4R (LA-EA4 + Monster upgrade) is the best option for full frame shooting with screw-drive on all A7 variants apart from the Mk4.
@@philwood1857 I have an EA-4 on my A7ii and it works on my Minolta 50mm kit lens, 50mm macro etc. as well as SAMs. What is the Monster upgrade and why do I need it?
@@barrybogart5436 the Monster upgrade is a new circuit board for an LA-EA4 which gives native e-mount focusing (PDAF) with screwdrive lenses on many e-mount bodies that the LA-EA5 does not support (only supports screwdrive on the A7Riv or A6600). As well as replace the circuit board you remove the SLT mirror. It's marketed as an LA-EA4r. Needless to say your LA-EA4 works and you can happily continue to use it. I think that would be cool with the LAEA5, much better tracking ability. So your Sigma 500mm is A-mount without HSM motor?
A nice collection of lenses.
There are a few in this collection that I have got. In particular the Reflex 500mm f8 is one of my favourites...😃👍
Incredible service to photographers. Many thanks.
Excellent video! Much needed for us who have a few A-Mount lenses sitting at home ;)
The very first video on the LA_EA5 Nice!
OUTSTANDING WORK! I would have LOVED to see some skin tones on these old lenses! Even though these old lenses may not have the resolution or color accuracy of newer units I find some of the older lenses have unique color shifts that can be very interesting and creative for unique cases. Any plans for human tests?
They only come in black.

This visual compendium is so helpful! Thx.
I miss the 35mm witch is not on your list and 85af. Just got the 135mm i hope you too... because it is wow!!! . Thanks for the video 📹
I have the Minolta 500 AF f/8 Reflex, 100-300 AF 4.5-5.6, 100-200 AF f/4.5, 70-210 f/4 AF and Sony 16-50 f/2.8 AF lens. Now I have to wait until Nov. 23 for B&H gets a shipment in so I can check them out. I was glad to see that you did test the 500 AF f/8 Reflex.

Your video just reminds me of my past time.. Once I was a real Minolta Pro... :) Thanks for the video.
Thank you for this video! I am looking into replacing my old DSLR and still want to keep my favourite Sony 50mm F2.8 in use. Very helpful!
I only have one Minolta A-mount lens and you didn't show it. The legendary 70-210mm f/4 "Beer Can" is very nice for outdoors.
This was extremely helpful for many. Thank you!
The smaller screw drive lenses fared reasonably but nowhere near as smoothly as the sony, sigma and even tamron lenses with inbuilt silent motors. Still grateful for the little motor in the LA-EA5. Lovely demonstrations.
Wow! Great collection of A-mount lenses.
Really excellent work. TY!
This is a wonderful collection.🖐🖐🖐
great document! Thanks
Now all I need is the a7riv and LAEA5 😂🤣😂🤣
Me encantaría tener esa colección 😊
I have the Sigma Art 35mm F/1.4 and SAL70200 MKI A mount. Works well with my LAEA3 adapter.
Of coz EA3 is a perfect match with those SSM/HSM lenses
Grea to see this. Eye tracking would be gret to see on suitable focal length lenses for portrait/fashion.
I had nearly forgotten all the cranking noises those old lenses used to make.

I have a problem
I have a Sony alpha7-iv camera with LA-EA5 adapter to be able to use my 5 A mount lenses . The only lens that doesn't work is the Tamron SP 180 macro !! In your video this lens works well with your sony alpha7R-iv and adaptor.
Can you help me understand if there is a solution?
Thank you. Joseph
Hi Joseph
Sometimes some batches of the lens cannot compatible with the LAEA adapters, just like my Sigma 50/1.4 Art wasn't supported by the LAEA adapters too, but some ppl said it could, therefore I send the email to ask Sigma for a solution then they arranged a firmware upgrade to me from the local dealer.
I went to the Tamron website but among the upgradeable lenses, I did not find the firmware that interests me (only 2 tamron lenses are upgradeable).
I hope Tamron can help me.
Thank you. Giuseppe
10:08 - Exactly what I was looking for :)
Not all Sigma 50/1.4 A-mount will work with the LAEA3/LAEA5 adapters, you may ask the local dealer for the firmware update.

Interestingly, great to see the later " Sonnar T's " in action.
However one notable thing ::
my Minolta 80-200 apo HS G ( the white body version) has no foggyness like the one you tested ( in fact behaviour, Sharpness & colour rendering is more like the later Sony 70-200 you tested next ) 🤔
Maybe my 80200APO is a defected sample, in my memory the image quality of 80200GHS is awesome
Very nice video. I own or owned some of these lenses myself. The Minolta 80-200 seemed a bit hazy, do you know why?
I’m not sure if your lens works perfectly with other adapter or cameras, but it should be a little bit more hazy while compare with those new lenses in nowadays standard.
Thank you!
I doubt image quality would be improved on the a7m4 and LAEA5 without the translucent mirror👍
You can also test with 70400G2 and 2470ZA with the continuous AF speed, it feels like a reborn.
Good for all sigma lens
Great showcase!! I've had Minolta lenses and been wanting to expand my alpha collection, this is a great video
@@kamilwiejaczka272 It's a good example if you understand the context of the post.
I am about to buy a 70-200 2.8 mount lens with the LA-EA5 adapter to use on my Sony a6300. do you think it's a good buy?
Get the Tamron 70-180/2.8 instead, or the 35-150/2-2.8, native lenses are much faster in tracking speed, also better in optical quality
@@HWGearStory thanks!
@@HWGearStory thanks again! A last question: Which would be the cheapest camera that can work with LA EA5 and screw focus lenses?

Yes it doesn't work with any screw driven lens on a7III in the moment.
Please check the slide at 21:50
Did you test out the Sony 135mm 1.8 ZA?
Very jealous. I wish Sony hadn't messed it up by putting the logic for driving this thing into the Camera, making useless for us with lower budgets and the A7iii :(
On the bright, side, it's a nice gesture that the support old A-Mount glass.
I feel like there is potential for making an adapter that pretends to be an e-moutn lens, with AF support and a silent AF motor.
Great video, thanks! Have you ever used LA-EA3 with SSM lenses? If yes, is there any improvement of LA-EA5 over the old LA-EA3?
Alessandro Colantonio same performance on SSM lenses, the main differences are the reduced size and the screw driver support.
Thank you!
@@HWGearStory Noted and thanks.
satisfying and useful video
At the moment I enjoy the fact that everyone wants e-mount. Since I only use my Sony Alpha 77ii for photography and don't need 4k video, I can get cheap used a-mount lenses. I recently bought a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 for about 300€. The next lens will be a 85mm 1.4 =)
tamron 85/1.8 is also a great lens, i prefer this one over the minolta 85/1.4G if you need an awesome picture quality and fast AF.
Regarding The LA EA 5 this has replaced The LA EA-4 basically the same 15 point AF and controls
The LA EA-5 is redesigned for later A7 models
The 4 was designed for older A7 models but not much between them
Thank you for the video
There were only 2 SSM driven lenses produced by Konica Minolta: 300/2.8GDSSM and 70-200/2.8GDSSM
The autofocus performance of the SSM lenses on LAEA3 and LAEA5 should be same, they also utilize the realtime tracking and eye-AF on my latest a7s3
In this moment the LAEA5 is only supporting the screw driven lenses on a6600 and a7r4, it also requires the latest firmware
The third party LAEA4r is only a circuit board and it still require the original LAEA4, the upgrade cost is high if you don't have the LAEA4, also it needs to wait for the updates by its manufacturer to let the monster supports more lenses, which LAEA5 doesn't requires, the latter only need updates on the camera side.
Your video is very good.
@@AgnostosGnostos Thank you so much for enjoying my video. Angenieux 28-70 is a rebranded lenses from Tokina, I would prefer the Minolta 28-70/2.8G more, it gives the Minolta signature bokeh and color, also more easy to be found on the 2nd hand market.
I was under the impression the LA-EA5 didn't work with some of these AF lenses, especially the 500mm mirror lens, because they don't have internal AF motors. Is that not the case?
Which camera are you using?
I have tried the 500mm mirror lens on the a74 and even the Tamron 1.4x tele convertor, it just works perfectly.
Thanks for this impressive video! How many focus point are available with the old Minolta screw drive lenses (non-SSM)? More than the LA-EA4 or the Sony A99 mk I ?
It can utilize all the OSPDAF focus points from the camera, on a7r4 you can use all 567 points even with screw driver lenses (except 500/8 Reflex is 15 points) .
Did anyone else see how quiet the AF was on the Tamron lenses... Holy Snikes

Do you think the minolta 300mm f2.8 with LA-EA5 on a sony a9 or a7iii will be fast enough for football/soccer or basketball?

The reason for the upgrade is the gain of a bit of light (no more mirror) and the improved focusing modes and performance. If you are happy with the LA-EA4 then you may not need the upgrade - which is not cheap.

some of these lenses seemed to not track at all - panning away lost focus (eg Min 24-85). Was that your finding too?
Mainoo smith IMO Minolta 24-85RS is very sticky while tracking, some of the lenses are more easy to lost focus if the object is lack of contrast, it’s more likely to happened on the zoom lenses, or the lenses with long focusing distance.
