    I have an A99ii and a bunch of vintage Minolta film lenses, three Tamron lenses and some really good A- mounts lenses, such as the 70-400 GSM II and Sony Zeiss 24-70mm. I bought the A7 IV and the 200-600mm and the LA-EA5 Adapter. Frankly, I've been amazed. Shooting my A-mount glass -- all of it -- on the A7 IV is just the same as it was with the same glass on the A99ii. I shot the Blue Angels using my 70-400mm and got as good or better than I got with the 200-600mm. The Tamron lenses work great, too. The old screw-drive Minolta lenses take a bit longer to focus but still do just as well as they do on the A99ii. The Minolta people who developed lenses like the 25-70mm probably never dreamed it could do eye-autofocus, but now it can.
    A-mount cameras are dead but the A-mount lenses live with the LA-EA5 adapter. Thank you, Sony.
    I rarely do video so I have no comment on video performance.

    I have the adapter on pre-order, can't wait to test it out. The 85 and 135 are really slow focusing lenses I never would use them for running shots even with the A99II, can't expect miracles from screw drive AF. Just being able to use them on the A7RIV though with live tracking and eye AF is worth it, more than enough for me to finally switch over.

    • @bobdriscoll3310
      @bobdriscoll3310 4 года назад +8

      I have the 85 1.4 Sony Zeiss and the Minolta 80-200 HS 2.8, both of which are screw drive. They both give amazing image quality on my A99ii, but the focus on the 85 is definitely slow (still awesome for portraits, especially with eye focus on hybrid af, just not for sports or action). The Minolta, however, while being a bit loud and clunky-sounding, is blazingly fast, so it's not really a limitation of the screw drive. The SSM is smoother and maybe even a tiny bit faster, but the screw drive CAN be super fast - it's just not on the Sony Zeiss lenses.

    Question for everyone. We have a Sony A7III E mount body and are looking to use a Sony 75-300mm f/4.5 -5.6 A mount Lens for a stationary tripod angle. Manual focus should be no problem because our subject won't be moving. Is the amount of light lost going from E to A mount a significant our minor amount? Also, any thoughts/recommendations about filming an angle for our show this way?

      This adapter provides an upgrade path for A-mount users upgrading to E-mount. Sony could have produced an A99iii or A77iii but the market wasn't there. So, they gave us the next best thing; an adapter that lets us use the E-mount cameras that are better than the A99ii or A77ii.

    We know continuous AF can work in video with A-mount adapters, because the EVF is a mini-video display when showing the Adapter working in Stills mode. If users connected a Ninja, they would be able to record it. So Sony's decision not to allow Continuous AF video, internally, is a deliberate 'cripple' .

    • @kamilwiejaczka272
      @kamilwiejaczka272 Год назад

      But the lens focuses wide open, so the video output would have to be wide open too. On LA-EA4 these lenses are forced into F3.5 in video AF, if you get Monster modified LA-EA4 adapter you loose video shooting and SSM compatibility.

By the way - primitive or not, LA-EA4 allows to use continues auto focus very well in some non action movie recording and good light situations. Generally - it works on all e-mount bodies, but mostly with restrictions. I have LA-EA3 and it works great with 16-35SSM II and Tamron SP 24-70 F2.8 USD. And for older lenses I use manual or LA-EA4. Always use YOUR brains and make decisions based on your needs. Do not listen those paid vloggers who are getting stuff for free or making money from that. PS you had to test the AF speed at Hi+ andhere is why - on my A7rIII the native Zeiss 55 1.8 is tracking well only on Hi+, all the other options work much worse. I suppose that Sony made some software mistakes writing the code AGAIN and the lower burst speeds do not work well with every lens.

    These lenses you are using (Zeiss ZA with screwdriver) are known for being slow overall regardless the body. The Minolta G counterparts (and the Minolta GM 80-200) wipe the floor and are almost as good as the GM lenses of today when it comes to back-forth speed, albeit having less MFD and less sharpness overall.

I currently shoot with an a77ii and I know it's going to die sometime (hopefully not for another year or two) and I'm just not sure where to go with it as buying a whole new system is not financially viable for me right now.

    I'm a Canon fan so pardon me if I say I'm surprised it took Sony 3 products to make a SLR lens to mirrorless body adaptor work, even the end result doesn't perform that good. I'm well aware Canon in the other hand came in the mirrorless segment late, but they make EF-EOS M and EF-EOS R adaptor just once each and they work. I have an RP and borrowed an EF 70-200 f4L IS USM (a 2006 design mind you) with an official Canon adaptor and the AF just.. work? Not as snappy as I'd hoped (probably because it's old), but it is accurate, and work with the various AF modes too.
    Is there a quirky lens design from the Sony SLR era that made it difficult for them to adapt to their mirrorless body?

      The [Lens Comp] (Lens Compensation) function does not work.
      Depending on shooting conditions, the brightness of the picture may not be even.Set the [Front Curtain Shutter] function to [Off].
      If you attach the [A-mount lens] using the Mount Adaptor, MF assist function does not work automatically when you turn the focus ring. You can enlarge the image by selecting [Focus Magnifier] function or [MF Assist] function to any key in the "Custom Key Settings".
      Shake compensation is available with 3-axis(Pitch/Yaw/Roll) by SteadyShot INSIDE.
      To use auto focus, the system software must be upgraded to Ver. 1.20 or later.
      Although you can perform auto focusing, it is sometimes difficult to focus on a subject using this function when you are shooting dark scenes or when a subject is located at the corners of the screen or is significantly out of focus.
      When you perform continuous shooting in the Hi+, Hi, or Mid mode while the focus mode is set to AF-C, the focus does not track a subject. To enable AF continuous shooting by setting continuous shooting to Hi+, Hi, or Mid mode, the system software must be upgraded to Ver. 1.20 or later.
      When you perform continuous shooting in the Hi+, Hi, or Mid mode while the focus mode is set to AF-C, the speed of continuous shooting can be slower.
