The sigma 90mm f2.8 is the pocket 85 you’re looking for - sometimes Adorama sells it brand new for $300. Also, when you use the 90mm in aps-c mode, you actually get a true 135mm fov ;)
The sigma 90mm is the most amazing lens I’ve ever owned. It’s practically perfect. And I’ve owned and shot over 100 lenses in my life. Plus used to work in cameras stores
@@sumitino It's not slow, it's actually quite quick. However, you might struggle in low-light situations, and it'll depend on which camera body you use. I find that my A1 and FX3 have significantly harder time tracking onto subjects compared to my a7C II. The A7C II and A7RV have significantly better AF and thus the 90mm DG DN behaves better on the a7C II than using a combo like the 35mm f1.4 GM on the A1.
I too love tiny lens! The biggest challenge with focal lengths less than 50mm (i.e 16-40 mm) is keeping good sharpness with minimal barrel distortion, which is introduced with shorter barrel lengths. There are compact lens out there but many need that extra barrel length and diameter to control distortion. Case in point is the Sony 20mm, G, f1.8 and the 24mm, f1.4, GM. These lenses are renown for having no to almost no distortion but achieve it with longer barrel lengths and larger diameter. The Sigma, 17mm, F4, DG DN (1:49) and Sony, 24mm, f2.8, G are tiny and compact but notoriously have Mad barrel distortion without lens corrections. These lenses are designed to work with the cameras lens correction feature to return a “truer” image , but does it at the expense of stretching and reducing sharpness in the corners of an image, (some won’t find this important, some will). I considered buying both these lenses but couldn’t get past the distortion and at least for the 24mm opted for the larger 24mm, F1.4, GM. For that setup at 0:33, I went with the Non pocketable one!
Great video! 3:35 I own the Sigma 90mm, f2.8, DG,DN and it is an engineering marvel in my opinion how something that small and compact can give the kind of reach and sharpness across the frame that it offers. With lens corrections off there is pin cushion distortion but that goes away completely with no loss in quality at all when turned on. It is a marvelous lens with it’s clicky aperture ring and AF/MF button. It has a lot going for it and everything it offers bends the senses. Really happy with this lens.
The Tamron primes are also super small and super light. Their focus won't be the fastest or quietest but they have really good image quality and can do 1:2 macro photos. Their 35mm offering has a very similar lens hood to the one you were describing as well, where you can attach a filter to the end of it.
Samyang 24mm f/1.8 has been my everyday lens for the last year. 230 grams, with f/1.8! Anybody who loves this sort of lenses, I'd suggest a take a look at Samyang.
@user-yg8hn4it3c There are some who say the sharpness and distortion control of the Samyang 24mm, f1.8 rivals that of the Sony, 24mm, f1.4, GM, and achieves this at more than half the cost and in a smaller form factor & weight. I was considering picking this one up as a second, more compact, cheaper 24mm but I had some concerns with the lack of weather/dust sealing, losing the better IBIS in handheld video that comes with using native Sony lenses, and Samyang is not known for having the best quality control out there from user feedback reviews. Still, the apple looks enticing.
2:22 Thanks for noting the filter thread feature provided on the lens hood of the Sony compact (24,40,50mm) trio of lenses. I have the 50mm, which I think is the best of the bunch but did not know this, as I bought it used and it didn’t come with the hood. Keeping the filter on the hood and easily twisting on and off is a great behavioral tip!
I just got a fe28 f2 to pair with my zv-e1, and this combo is almost perfect. It’s a little longer then the G trilogy, but it offers bright f2 aperture and delivering solid results, considering the price it’s an absolute steal.
How about the Samyang 75mm 1.8 as an alternative to the 85mm? My setup is an A7C with the Samyang 18mm 2.8, 35mm 1.8 and the 75mm 1.8 all packed in the Peak Design 3l Sling. The 35mm and 75mm are great lenses, the 18mm is not bad but not great. But ultrawide I shoot the least, so it’s ok for me. Been thinking about replacing it with a 24mm, because I always struggle with composition with a lens as wide as 18mm.
I know I’m a little late, but the Viltrox 20mm f2.8 fits the description and costs around 150-160 usd. It’s crazy good for the price! It’s a full frame lens too, so it’s great for both FF and APS-C as a 30mm lens.
Yes definitely need more smaller lenses. My favourite lens for my first camera was the Panasonic 20mm F/1.7 (40mm equiv) on the Olympus OMD EM10. It was a great travel combo. And the Oly 45mm F/1.8 (90mm equiv) was stellar. Wish we could get similar for FF. My favourite with Sony has been the A6000 with the underrated FE 28mm F2 (equiv 42mm) as a nearly pocketable walk around combo.
I wanted a "second light primes setup" to 1/ serve in case of problem with the BIG setup (20 1.8 G / 35 1.4 GM / 85 1.4 Sigma) on a wedding and 2/ be my new setup for personal use and especially travelling. The idea was to try first the 90 2.8 from Sigma (the one you almost forgot Jason ;) )... and in the end, the same day, I bought the Sigma Trinity : 17 / 35 (f2) and 90mm :) They're so light and so compact, I love them !! I brought them with me last week in Copenhagen, can't wait to see the results on my big screen ! Next time, they're going to Japan :)
I bought the 24 and 40 with the original a7c. Wasn’t happy with the evf so I sold it. Waited around for the a7cii. And it’s definitely my favorite setup for compact shooting. Goes great with 3L peak design sling. Paired with the osmo pocket 3 and you’ve got everything you need!
Well, as an astrophotographer myself, I've been shooting with primes exclusively, but there is a time and place for everything, and today, lenses are so well made that even "cheap" ones are good. I started using the Samyang 24 F 1.8 recently and it's been a blast. Going from lenses around 700gr to 1kg, to 260gr. I mean.... JUST WTF.
Tamron 35mm 2.8 macro is kinda chunky, but light and has filter thread on a lens hood..and it is crazy cheap..also pixel sharp even wide open at f2.8 (On my 42MP A7RII)
Hey Jason! You are definitely not vong about this one. I have bought a lot of lenses over the years, but the one I keep going back to again and again is the 24 mm f2.8 super compact little lens. It's so much fun to shoot with and even though it's a little tight, I find vlogging on it a lot better than the bigger lenses because my arm doesn't hurt after holding my camera up for a while. The 24, 40, and 50 compact lenses came out after the original A7C released. My hope is now that we have the A7CII and the A7CR there are more of these lenses on the way!!!
So glad to see this video you’ve done! Bought a 2nd hand a7C and paired it with the 40mm f/2.5. What a combo! Currently not even thinking about getting any other lenses because this compactness is hard to reach and in my eyes it’s the best street photography set. Tempted for the sigma 90 2.8 but I’m holding for now!
I have a Used, Like New A7C on the way to me. The declining price on the used market vs the value was just too attractive to pass up. I am considering getting the tiny, Sony, 40mm, f2.5, G, as a proxy for a 35mm to pair with it. It'll be just 5 mm tighter framing than a 35mm and I'll get all that wonderful build quality, clicky dials, and compactness. My only concern is I already have the Sony, 50mm, 2.5, G and 40mm seems really close to that. How does your 40mm compare to a 35mm or a 50mm?
Hey! It is exactly as you describe. 35mm is too close to 40mm and at the same time 40mm and 50mm sit quite closely too. I think that’s exactly why I love the 40mm. Almost identical to the 35, and easy to replicate the 50 with such a minor crop. 40mm to my eyes sits at the perfect spot to become the single lens to use!
@edwnsoto18 In looking at the youtube product reviews the Samyang lenses are very impressive but the biggest knock comes from their quality control department. There are product reviews complaining about how Samyang/Rokinon sells lemons from time to time that don’t perform as well as the youtube reviewed samples in practice.
I would take the 55mm F1.8 over the 50mm F2.5. The 24mm F2.8 pocket size version great. If I had to pair 2 lenses for an event the 55mm F1.8 with the 24mm F2.8.
While not as premium feeling/feature rich as the compact sony G lenses, Samyang's Tiny series are a great fit for the A7C bodies and offers apertures on some focal ranges you can't get elsewhere on AF e-mount lenses. My 2 favorite so far is the 24mm f 1.8 and 45mm f 1.8 F 1.8 lenses are that almost perfect balance between speed size and price imo.
I'm still on the fence with the a7CR or a7C II, I currently have an α1, ZV-E1 and for street photography, I've been using the Fuji X100V the (almost) last 4 years (picked it up at launch). But as much as I've been loving the X100V, I wish it did better in low light because I love doing street photography at night. The α1 is just a tad too big (because of the hump), the ZV-E1 "could" be used for street photography but 12MP is too little if I need to crop. I have until tomorrow to decide if I should get an α7CR or α7C II because of a Sony deal... What do you think? Just stick with what I've already got?
id would save the extra money and get the Cii, unless you do tons of cropping then i would get the cR. I just recently picked up the cii and its such an amazing camera! the video iso isn't as high as the zv-e1 and doesn't have active stabe, but its a nice all around camera!
I, as many people, don't like 2.8 mid range primes, so Samyang 45/1.8 for me is still the king of small, light, perfect fov between 35 and 50/55, af, bokeh and under f/2 at 160g. Looks cheap, far from G body, but works years like new, mine seems particularly unkillable ;) People like metal lenses like that small Sigma line, but once you bump it enough, some plastic flex is what I want. Next their 24/1.8 from the same Tiny line, if one doesn't need the GM, this one is the 24 to get. I don't like that the Sigma 17 is f/4, the Samyang has nice enough 18/2.8 at 145g and there's new very cheap Viltrox 20/2.8 and Tamron 20/2.8 is also fine. And Sony 11/1.8 aps-c is so small and sharp, still often better to shoot with that cropped at 16mm than f/4 ff. And it covers like 1.2x crop of ff too, great for wide hand held FF vlogging with active stabilization and around 1.1x crop on that. Also Samyang 75/1.8 is worth mentioning, by far smallest short 1.8 tele at 230g, almost pocketable '85'.
I have the Samyang 45mm 1.8 for a while and love it. During the Black Friday deal, I also bought the Samyang 35mm 1.8. It's a great lens, but now I'm wondering if I need it since I already have the 45mm. Trying to decide.
Another pocketable wide angle lens is the new Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 AF. It's currently available for Sony E-mount. It's 65 x 59.5 mm, and weighs 5.5 oz. 52mm filter thread. Image quality is pretty good, especially for a $158 full-frame autofocus lens. Lately, I've been using it more than my Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art lens. The Samyang 75mm f/1.8 is just 65 x 69 mm and only 8.11 oz. At $289.95, it's pretty budget-friendly. @DustinAbbottTWI is a fan of the lens, for its image quality. It's not an 85mm f/1.4 G-master, but at less than a third of the weight and a fifth of the cost of the GM, it's a lot easier on both your back and your budget. Pair the Viltrox and Samyang with a Sony a7C II or a7CR, and you're still under 2 pounds.
Love my A7R5 but it was really nice getting the chance to use a Leica Q3 for our 3wk Europe trip… really enjoyed the lighter more compact camera while still getting those 60mp images
I only use these pro cameras when I go for vacations which is around twice a year so my memory card can last quite some time… also I just shoot in the highest Jpg setting and not RAW so the files aren’t too bad
My Samyang 75mm f1.8 might be your answer. I also strongly prefer compact lenses, and I pair that lens with the Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8 and Voigtlander 40mm f1.2
When I want to travel with a small camera and small lenses, I carry the following: Olympus micro 4/3 body 14mm f/2.5 wide-angle 20mm f/1.7 normal 45mm f/1.8 telephoto
The 40mm f2 nikon on my Zf is amazingly lightweight combo. Admittedly i don't like the plastic mount, but for 239 pounds here in the UK you can't go wrong 😊
Oh boy, oh boy - I am afraid you could end up with a Leica M in a year or so... pocketability pushed to the extreme and highly addictive 😁 Jokes aside, I totally love your videos Jason 💯 Cheers from Germany
Totally on board with this way of shooting. Currently have the 24, 40, 50 G and the Samyang 75, and Sigma 90. Hoping for a tiny 135 or longer. May grab the Sigma 17mm. Do have the PZ16-35 and 20-70G when I prefer a zoom. But agree, soo much nice to shoot and carry small gear.
You are speaking my language Vong! Just got hooked on the compact Gs a few months ago and love them. Really hope Sony doesn’t drop this line and give us a that 85 compact beauty.
I love all my giant glass for jobs but i ADORE leaving my house with nothing but the 40/2.5 for everyday life and street. It just feels so good in the hand.
Totally agree Jason, I have the A7cr, with the 24 and 40 g 2.8 and the 85mm sigma. Perfect lightweight setup. Need a wider lens now and I am struggling to find one. 14mm gm or 16-35 gm ii ? To big? Thoughts 🤔 need a 16mm 2.8 to go with the 24 and 40. Perfect Leica killer setup otherwise 🙂
TBH I haven’t really used it as much as the a7CR but I can’t imagine them to be any different for photo cases except the MP difference. Video on the other hand, I prefer the a7CR 4K60p as the crop isn’t as significant
TTArtisan 27mm f2.8 for apsc, samyang 24/35mm f2.8 for FF. 17mm f4 was a surprise for me. I look at price and apsc combi though, as I look at heavy, pricy alternative. Kit lens still leads for AF with multiple FoV, but 2x faster f2 or 4x faster f0.95 will be worth the size.
I feel like sony could do with broadening that range of small G lenses, something like a 20, 28 and a lens somewhere between 65-75, but I totally want a 28mm, always wondered what the point of 28 was when there was 24, but the more I've been shooting street the more i find 24 too wide, and 35 too close and realising that 28mm seems to be what a lot of "street" compacts use, so it'd be nice if we had a 28mm that wasn't an ancient zeiss design one.
Sigma already has a 65mm f/2 compact lens, which is insanely sharp and much better IQ than their 90mm f/2.8. I have Sonys 24 and 40 G lenses, but I still prefer using mostly the 24mm f/1.4 GM lens on my A7CII. Both as 24mm and in APS-C mode as 36mm f/2’ish. I really miss an 85mm compact lens from Sony and I’m fine with a 85mm f/2.5 ultra compact prime G C’mon Sony 🙏🏼😍
@UfukSahinDenmark The Sigma 65mm, f2, seems like the sharpest thing out there from all the clinical test websites and RUclips reviews I've seen. I'm really thinking hard about adding this one. Still, for me after a certain level of sharpness, your just showing off as degrees sharpness become indistinguishable to my eye. Still this seems like quite a lens that I wouldn't mind owning.
Interesting since I'm looking for even more compact lenses at the moment. Just took over a NEX5N from my parents and I want to turn it into my pocket camera for those times that i don't want to take a A7iv. I tried my 40G and the Samyang 35 2.8 and both still feel big on the tiny NEX. I have a Sony 20 2.8 pancake lens on order but i wish there are some on the market that is similar form factor but maybe even manual? 30mm equiv with the 20 seems like a good focal length to have though
Just got the viltrox 20mm 2.8 myself. For the size and price i paid ($152) , it's a no brainer. Cheap and small enough for me to put it on my a7iii and bring it everywhere.
Don't you think 20mm is too wide for everyday use? Even in APSC mode, it will be 30mm and still too wide, I think. For me perfect everyday focal length is somewhere between 35mm to 45mm (FF equivalent). I also have this lens and am thinking about sending it back. I paid $145 during Black Friday.
The sigma 90mm f2.8 is the pocket 85 you’re looking for - sometimes Adorama sells it brand new for $300. Also, when you use the 90mm in aps-c mode, you actually get a true 135mm fov ;)
Second this. I absolutely love the Sigma I series. I have the 24 3.5 and 45 2.8 as well and love them
Does it have really slow focus like most other 85/90 macros?

There are product reviews complaining about how Samyang/Rokinon sells lemons from time to time that don’t perform as well as the youtube reviewed samples in practice.
Jason love your channel. You and Vivian inspire me. I just got the Sony A7Cr and the 24mm compact for Christmas. Looking forward to trying it.
Nice!! Enjoy the combo!
I would take the 55mm F1.8 over the 50mm F2.5.
The 24mm F2.8 pocket size version great.
If I had to pair 2 lenses for an event the 55mm F1.8 with the 24mm F2.8.
I’m in Japan now and been looking for the 40mm all around and it’s sold out even at the Sony store 😭
While not as premium feeling/feature rich as the compact sony G lenses, Samyang's Tiny series are a great fit for the A7C bodies and offers apertures on some focal ranges you can't get elsewhere on AF e-mount lenses. My 2 favorite so far is the 24mm f 1.8 and 45mm f 1.8
F 1.8 lenses are that almost perfect balance between speed size and price imo.
Could’nt agree more. I love these compact full frame lenses. ❤
I do the same thing, my a7cii+ 50mm 1.8 in one pocket, and the 20mm1.8g in the other
Slightly larger than your wish list but the Samyang V-AF series are gorgeous for lightweight travel. Sony 10-20mm PZ too.
Samyang 35/1.8 is also small and sharp!
Great job on the video Jason! Thanks for making it.
Love my A7R5 but it was really nice getting the chance to use a Leica Q3 for our 3wk Europe trip… really enjoyed the lighter more compact camera while still getting those 60mp images
@meatloveswasabi Those are two fantastic cameras but they produce images with massive file sizes...How quickly do you go through hard drives?
I only use these pro cameras when I go for vacations which is around twice a year so my memory card can last quite some time… also I just shoot in the highest Jpg setting and not RAW so the files aren’t too bad
I can see there's no vignetting when using nd filter on the hood, but sometimes variable nd filter tends a bit thicker. Have you try any ?
Love the disposable in the background!
😂😂
The 6700 paired with the Sony 24 1.8 ZA is perfect.
One of my favorite apsc lenses!
My Samyang 75mm f1.8 might be your answer. I also strongly prefer compact lenses, and I pair that lens with the Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8 and Voigtlander 40mm f1.2
I forgot about the Samyang 75mm! Might have to test it out with the Sigma 90 and see which is better for my casr
@@JasonVong make a video comparing the two!
When I want to travel with a small camera and small lenses, I carry the following:
Olympus micro 4/3 body
14mm f/2.5 wide-angle
20mm f/1.7 normal
45mm f/1.8 telephoto
The 40mm f2 nikon on my Zf is amazingly lightweight combo. Admittedly i don't like the plastic mount, but for 239 pounds here in the UK you can't go wrong 😊
Oh boy, oh boy - I am afraid you could end up with a Leica M in a year or so... pocketability pushed to the extreme and highly addictive 😁 Jokes aside, I totally love your videos Jason 💯 Cheers from Germany
For me, going light means taking only the camera with the lens on it. No second lens, nothing else. Sony A7 with the 40mm f2.5 is my go to choice.
i am looking at the 24 and 50mm. I know that the 24mm has distortion issues. pls advise. tq
I got Nikon z 40mm f2.. Very compact n pocketable.. Next I hope 105mm with similar size would be great..
The Samyang V-AF T1.9 cine lenses are amazing and are jacket pocketable, Jason.
85 and a 16 with the same size as the new Sony g lenses would be amazing! I own the 24 and 50
Totally on board with this way of shooting.
Great set Jasom. A modern fast 28 would be golden
You are speaking my language Vong! Just got hooked on the compact Gs a few months ago and love them. Really hope Sony doesn’t drop this line and give us a that 85 compact beauty.
Got the 40mm and I love it.
Viltrox 20mm F2.8, the infamous but flexible for outdoor 28-60mm, and the 35mm or 55mm f1.8 is my to go kit
I'm a big fan of the Rokinon/Samyang 75mm f/1.8.
All the best to you, Jason and your wife. Year of dragon is coming, fingers crossed for you guys.
🐉
I love all my giant glass for jobs but i ADORE leaving my house with nothing but the 40/2.5 for everyday life and street. It just feels so good in the hand.
Hey Jason for the lens hood hack, can you use the 40mm/50mm lens hood on the 24mm G lens since they have the same filter thread?
Totally agree Jason, I have the A7cr, with the 24 and 40 g 2.8 and the 85mm sigma. Perfect lightweight setup. Need a wider lens now and I am struggling to find one. 14mm gm or 16-35 gm ii ? To big? Thoughts 🤔 need a 16mm 2.8 to go with the 24 and 40. Perfect Leica killer setup otherwise 🙂
I've been noticing a lot of your recent videos featuring the cii, How are you liking it?
How about compact zoom lenses options? 😊
*My Sony 11mm f1.4 and Kit lens 16-50mm, but I'll use the 11mm all the time*
How about the sigma 50mm f2? what do you think about this lens comparing to the sony g lens?
The viltrox 20mm AF definitely also meets this criteria! Not weather sealed but its great on every other front
I've been waiting forever for an 18(or 16)mm pancake lens for vlogging!!
The Zeiss 35 2.8 has always been a sleeper. More pancakes please!!! 🥞
Hey Jason, love your channel! Should I film my videos in vertical mode for social content or should I still record it in horizontal? Thank you
Great video Jason - do you see any reason why that filter hack wouldn’t work with a VND?
just the video we needed
I've been using the Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 its a little bit more on the bigger side but its still jacket pocketable
Ngl I’d be down for this to bring pocket lenses. All I need to do is “downgrade” my IV to the A7cii and I’m set lol.
Ssigma 90 f 2.8 is best choice for you Jason hehe
Welp time for me to go cop one!
What is the filter size for the hack?
I’ve got the 24mm on the ZVE1. Whist I prefer my 20mm F1.8, it’s great when you want small, light and unobtrusive.
Yes! I am waiting for them to redo the 28mm. It’d be a killer street combo!
The filter diameter for these lenses are 49mm, but the glass is what? - 12mm?
10000000000%!!!! the a7cii with the 24 and 40mm G has been just a joy to travel with! looking for that 85mm travel lens... :D
or Samyang V-AF 100 mm T/2,3
Also look at the Viltrox 20mm F2.8. Full Frame lens with good AF, small and light (157g) for just US$158.00.
Sony E-mount seriously need more pancake lenses.
I’m new to photography out of New York I was wondering what is the best lens for the Sony a 6600
No love for the 28-60? Come at me bro 😅
I didn’t bring it with me on this trip but we used it quite extensively last summer into this past spring and it was great!
Can you talk about the Sony 28mm f2?
Sigma 90mm f2.8 is phenomenal
85 1.8 fits jacket pocket for sure
It does! Just a lil bulge-y in comparison 😅
Is that a compact lens in your pocket or are you glad to see me?
I hadn't seen the very end until after I had already typed that comment!
@@dahut3614 🤣
Still waiting for the compact 16mm F2.8 😅 When Sony?!
A 20mm, 28mm, 35mm, & 75mm would be ideal….. especially that 28mm, a focal length that Sony definitely needs to reboot in their arsenal
Yes please!
