This has also a lot to do with the focal length of the camera being used and the distance to the subject. Longer focal lengths will make the face appear wider.

Honest question! Is it acctually increased distance that distorts proportions in photos or is it the other way around?
Meaning that the camera has one lens while the eyes have two and while a face appears narrower if you stand top close it will be nothing compaired to taking a photo with one of your eyes if we imagine them as two camera angles?
