Asymmetry is usually caused by bad posture or some other problem (yes, it affects the face since all is connected), for which the body has to compensate. It's something that needs to be fixed, not covered ;)

@@lenamanka5542 I have an asymmetric jaw, even after correcting the bite with braces. Asymmetry is enhanced due to the different tones of the masticatory muscles. It turns out that the right corner of the lower jaw is more square and massive than the left. This can only be corrected by surgery, no posture will fix it. But since I do not want to break bones for the sake of aesthetic improvement (my jaw shape does not affect health), I would like to know how to compensate for this visually.

    This is gold 🙌
Now it makes sense why I look like a balding man when my hair doesn’t have enough volume in the roots. (Square forehead+low cranial top). I literally look like 2 different people. It’s even worse if my sides are super tight too, like those tight low buns.

Finally! Something tangible to explain my long-standing intuition!
I've always noticed that I just couldn't do certain hairstyles that looked so beautiful on others. Even if I replicated them exactly, they never looked good on me because they always created a much different shape. I've always intuitively blamed my head shape/hairline but it was too vague and abstract to be able to pinpoint the cause exactly.
But now I have an actual concrete explanation for this occurrence! It makes me sad that this means I'll just never be able to accomplish certain looks no matter how well they're executed, but at least I know definitively where that line is drawn and why!

It really depends on what that girl wants for her life. If she pursues a professional career, or wants respect from other people, or if she wants to look sexy, then that haircut is definitely a big NO. But if she wants to elicit other people's desire to help her out (for example, if she pretends to be a young teenager and sells girl scout cookies), then that hairstyle is right on.

I've got to agree especially having a very flat long skull and long facial features, I'm constantly trying to "bump" the top from just behind my hairline back. This offsets the prominant pitch and bend of bridge of my nose, in profile. Itsa lotta work

You are a brilliant wizard! I can't tell you how many different hair stylists I've been to over the decades who just have zero understanding of, or even ability to see proportions! And walking out of pretty much every salon I've ever been to, looking like Mr Ed or Secretariat because i have a long mid-face, as well as a small, sloped forehead... as well as the curse of an almost non-existent "cranial top" And unfortunately with limp (and now wispy, thinning 😭) hair and an angled forehead making mid face even more prominent, most days I end look like I styled my hair with a melting snowball.
I swear, on those rare days where the stars align and the Gods are smiling on me, my hair has a bit of oompf in juuuust the right places to change the shape of my cranium and I easily look 10 times more attractive! Any of my favourite photos of myself, it's the hair resting juuuuust the right way and it COMPLETELY alters the shape of my face. And everyone always says, "That doesn't even look like you!" (Gee, thanks. Shut up)
You are the first genius I've ever encountered who understands it so well and have explained it so well for all of us! All Hail Jenn the Geometry Genius!!!
When I tell hairstylists that it's all about the geometry, they think I'm bananas.
I even got pulled over by the police once for a minor infraction on what I refer to as a "good face day" (which means my hair is poofed in just the right spots to make my head shaped well to perfectly balance and enhance my facial features) and the officer gave me a very hard time because he didn't believe it was actually me in the license photo because the photo was me with my everyday flat and narrow cranial top with extremely long mid face making me look horsey, or like I've got my face up close to the peephole in your door for the fisheye lens effect 😆 and looked nothing like this stunning goddess standing before him who had just made an illegal turn!
I've actually been considering traveling abroad to get a cranial implant recently because aging is lengthening the mid face even more and those elusive "good face days" are becoming increasingly rare but i KNOW there has to be some kind of hair styling sorcery that could at least result in a better look a little more often at least! You have given me hope. Three cheers for Jenn The Geometry Genius!! 🎉

This is such an interesting video! I actually just went and measured my horizontal proportions 😂 basically all 3 sections of my face are pretty balanced, with the top third being slightly longer and the middle and bottom third virtually equal. Am someone who is hopeless at styling my hair plus i want my hair off my face haha. So my go-to hairstyle (if it can even be called a hairstyle!) is a slicked back ponytail 😄😄
However i have noticed that this classic look doesn't make me look polished and sleek like it does on others, but kind of bald 😬 especially in photos! The reason being a very low cranial top!
Alternatively, if i just leave my hair loose (i let it fall in my natural part which is slightly assymetrical - think this looks better on me than a dead centre or deep side part) i look MUCH better and the effect is very noticeable in pics too.
Btw, i remember styling my hair once in awhile with a sleek bun/ ponytail and deep side part as is shown in 8:45 back in the day! Looking back at my pics from that era - VERY unflattering look 😂😂

@@stylerefinement given that i a) don't want to wear my hair down on a daily basis (where i live is super humid lol), b) want my hair off my face, and c) want to spend less than 5 mins on my hair each morning (aka no time for blow drying/ teasing etc.) for years and years my go-to was a basic mid/ high ponytail. However as i have a low cranial top this can make me look bald especially in photos! Couple of years ago i found an alternative - a sleek topknot! While not really adding "volume" on top, the bun on top of my head camoflages the flatness of the head itself, so to speak 😂 it is also as easy and unfussy as a ponytail!
I understand a topknot may not look good on everyone, but i do believe it flatters my (what i think is my) Soft Classic type as well??

My head is literally traumatized 🤧 don't know what my highschool and middle school self was thinking.

I have an extremely low cranial top, big forehead and neck on the shorter side, but i never had a name for the cranial top bit until i came across this video. I’m so insecure about it, and even though this video was enlightening, my hair type (4b/c, the complete opposite of straight) is hard to manipulate into anything that would look flattering whilst elongating the top of my head, so i ademantly avoid low ponytails, buns, cornrows or thin hairstyles (basically anything that would emphasise the top of my head)
I wish somebody with my head and hair type would come up with a natural style that suits me, but until then, scarf wraps and protective styles are my go to - i just rely on face card to get me through since my hair can’t do much lmao
Absolutely not your fault though lol, you can only do your best. Thanks for this video!

A middle part doesn’t work that well for me because my nose is a little asymmetrical from being hit in the nose twice when I was in elementary school-once by a basketball and once by a bully who hit me im the face with his satchel full of books. To complicate matters, I have a cowlick in my hairline and a high forehead. I part my hair at the side, at the exact spot where the cowlick is, which thankfully isn’t too far over. That’s all I can do because anytime I get bangs, they look like they’re cut crooked because of the cowlick, and they emphasize my nose, which isn’t small.

The curtain bangs don’t suit her face. Her eyes are already vivid, her forehead shape is lovely and she looks better with the hair off of her face or skimming the sides of it. I’d go with pixie cut but with hair pulled back/ up, bob or shoulder length blunt cut.

Which hairstyles do you recommend for black/biracial women with low cranial tops and curly hair? Specifically type 3 hair textures? I think if you have a low cranial top with type 3 hair texture, you're actually quite lucky because the curls themselves add quite a bit of volume to your root already! I'd recommend wearing it with a side part for the natural volume of the curls to add height to your crown area. Hope that helps!

God, now I know why my hair always looks so awkward on me!! I've ALWAYS had the feeling something was off, since I was a teen. I've always felt very self-conscious about my hair and cried many times about how weird it looks, and no one really got what I was talking about.
I have a very round face and a low cranial top + the back of my head is flat (rip). For horizontal balance, the lower third is slightly longer than the middle third and lower third, which are the same length.
I've tried so many things, and all of them didn't fit me. I'm growing out my hair, but the only style that looks good on me is a ponytail! I'm thinking about a bob, perhaps. This is so frustrating 😭

I’d say it depends on how high your hairline is! But if the peaks are really high then similar to a square hairline you should avoid a side part where you expose the highest point of your forehead 🙂

This is quite fascinating. I can look at the photos and see which one is more flattering, but would not know why without your explanation. Jenn, is there a name for this particular discipline of facial analysis? Also, it explains why I look better with some volume at the top of my head...not crown specifically, as I wear it off my face, but immediately from the top of my forehead all the way to the top of my head. I guess I kind of still like big hair. ;-D

    • @stylerefinement
      @stylerefinement  9 месяцев назад

It could also be that the added volume opens up your forehead more and you like the effect! :D I'm not sure if there is a specific designated term - Proportional Analysis would be the closest I think :)

      @fionah3433 9 месяцев назад

Thanks, Jenn. It's pretty open anyway, high and wide, but I also don't like the feel of anything touching my face. Not sure if wearing it off my face is the most flattering or not, but even when it's down it's off my face with some height in the front.

Currently I'm growing my hair, but since I have a long face I like using layers to create a visual break so that the hair doesn't drag too much emphasis downwards and make my face appear longer! I've also enjoyed wearing a short bob above the chin, and get lots of compliments with a pixie cut but I HATED the growing out process with the pixie so I'm not sure if I'll ever go back to it. I seem to switch back and forth between bob and long hair 😄

my hair line is UP there so my cranial top is very very teeny tiny (like 1cm - 0,39inches - from a front-view) and then my top part is the longest part of my face (with middle being the smaller one and bottom is like in-between)
Guess I gotta try for more volume (also thinking about getting curtain bangs) hmmm a lot of decisions to make lol

    • @stylerefinement

In your case it's important to expose the forehead (so no bangs, or bangs that are longer than your cheekbones that can expose the forehead), and also to add volume to your hair along your hairline but NOT around your crown!
