    I had my brows "cleaned up" at a salon once, and it looked so wrong. Absolutely a downgrade in my opinion. I absolutely need the natural "unclean" part of the outer outline of the brow shape.

      Oh, that's another point against me having Natural essence. No matter the trend as long as my eyebrows are cleaned up it's an instant upgrade. Whether it was the 2000s pencil brows, 2010s stencil brows or today's "accentuate your lines" clean girl look. I can't just let them grow without them sticking out on my face like a sore thumb.

    It's also important to remember that essence is also about how you walk / talk and some aspects of your personality.

      Not really - essences are mainly based on one's face, not walk or personality, in any accurate system that is (like Truth Is Beauty).

    This is oddly a great tool for finding your casting type as an actor, i still dont know my type lol and im honestly the worst at even working out kibbe types but i get mainly cast as femme fatales but also "difficult" leading characters with a lot of differences between them. Due to the lack if interesting features on my face I suspect im a classic, and i have a strong feeling that actors who share the same essence might find themselves been sought out for similar roles but idk

    I've actually found Kitchener essences much LESS confusing than Kibbe's system, the latter being confusion-fest all over to me! ;D (I follow Kitchener-based system as laid out by Truth Is Beauty, specifically.) I love how it gives SO much more choice, especially as you can be *any* combination of essences, to me that's just freedom, without any artificial limitations (like Kibbe has)! :) None of us is ever just one thing, honestly, like Kibbe claims. And that's is based on one's face, *not* body, which makes so much more sense. Plus Kibbe is entirely lacking some essences like Ingenue and Ethereal, which are crucial to any great & accurate style system, IMO!

    • @minervarose7664

      I LOVE the Truth is Beauty typing system, it's actually what started me off the rabbit hole of style types and seasonal colour analysis! What i love most about her system is how she says we should dress mostly for our face, rather than our body. Which makes so much sense. For instance you can have a very Romantic body type but if you have a very Ingenue face, dressing very sexy can look a bit off. Of course, you can incorporate a few Romantic elements as well, just not dress overtly Romantic. I have not seen that approach taken by any of the other style typing systems, which are all hyper focused on the body proportions.
      I also like how her seasonal colour analysis focuses on how OUR skin reacts against different colours/ chromas/ contrast levels etc. Rather than just saying stuff like "dark hair + dark eyes + warm undertone = Dark Autumn"
      It's a pity she seems to have given up her blog 😞

    I think the tricky part about pinning down your essences versus your body type is that you only have one body type, whereas most people have a blend of three different essences. The fact that the three are combined in your face makes it more difficult to tell what's what imo.

    Ethereal is in your face because of the mid length. Your mid face is longer which gives more of that mystical quality. It's not your main one but it is there. Plus you have a slight softness in your coloration. It's not PITCH black it's like you toned the contrast down. Slightly grayish.

      I disagree, her length of the face doesn't have to do with ethereal essence. Jen has a strong jaw/chin area, which clearly points more towards dramatic or natural. If at all, the ethereal essence which some see in her is her lighter eyebrows and lower contrast.

    I LOVE your approach. I took a makeup class for theatre in college and one of the assignments was to do opposite makeup styles on either side of your face and I did “ingenue vs evil Queen” and I absolutely achieved this through contrast level, eyebrows, lip shape, and contouring. So I think that’s exactly it. I don’t think anyone would think I have a dramatic body type but I definitely have dramatic eyebrows and I know I can soften to more of a classic vibe through shaping. Somehow still never fully broke down how that related to essences 😅. Thanks for your work translating and communicating!

    I had the exact same experience as you with Kitchener essences! I could easily find my Kibbe type because there were specific guidelines for each body type, but my essences were harder to pin down because of how intuitive Kitchener’s system is and how much the essences mix and flow into each other. I’m just the kind of person that needs hard and fast rules lol.

    Hi Jenn! You did my analysis earlier this year and you actually supported what I already know to be true about my essence blend. You shared that cute/delicate, sophisticated/ elegant looks work best for me along with some modern/glamour looks. For reference I have a blend of Classic (40%), Romantic (35%), and Gamine (25%). I loved how I could combine both an analytical and artistic approach and pretty much end up with the same results. Love how we are connecting the dots in these recent videos!

    Oh I love seeing your take on the essences. It'll be great to hear more of an "analytical" take from you on this topic, since Kibbe typing is easier for you than the Kitchener system. I'm still very confused with Kibbe, because so often I just can't "see" what makes a person type X instead of type Y or Z. I find the Kitchener essences a lot easier to understand since interpreting the "vibe" of a person and their face/body comes to me much more naturally than analyzing their actual body proportions. So I'm sure I'll gain new insight when I hear a "Kibbe-minded" person like yourself explain the essences!

    This was excellent. I was introduced to Kibbe by my mother, and after reflection and study, believe I am also a Flamboyant Natural. Based on impressions, here i would have pegged myself as a Dramatic, but also with some natural elements. I am nearly 1m80 with broad shoulders and fairly medium hips, no definition in my figure (not much of a waist, thick, straight arms and legs with large wrists and ankles... yet long, slender fingers). So i think i definitely come off as striking and powerful, and my face is long and my features quite steong. I used to be high contrast as well, but I am losing my contrast as my hair is nearly white in front and even my dark eyes are looking lighter. I feel very washed out and being a very different me (what feels like) all of a sudden has left me flummoxed as to my understanding of my physical self (which was never a strong point to begin with!).

    I had an easier time with Kitchner than Kibbe. Mainly because I believe that I have a strong Ethereal essence. Kibbe doesn't really make space for Ethereal traits in his system. You get placed in dramatic generally, which is far too harsh for most ethereals. FN and SD fit a little better due to the added softness, but are still not quite right. I am grateful that Kitchner makes room for those of us who don't fit well in the boxes of Kibbe.

    • @florenna
      @florenna 10 месяцев назад +3

      I 100% agree with you! :) I really dont know how any system that lacks Ethereal and Ingenue (as Kibbe does) can be regarded as a good, accurate system... :/

    • @carolesmall-diop2333
      @carolesmall-diop2333 2 дня назад

      @@florennaI agree with both of you that there is a difference, even though I am definitely not in those categories. I discovered Kitchener here and I like the emotional side of it. With Kibbe, I had a really hard time with the assessments until I found some quizzes with very clear and specific questions on each specific feature and then you added them up for a score. I'm pretty clear on the fact that I look striking and powerful (I'm super tall and strong, with a big nose and dark eyes) but until I had the quizzes to help me count, I had a hard time figuring out if I was sharp or blunt overall (heavy bone structure, round cheeks, narrow jaw, thick limbs and long, thin hands, it's complicated). In the end, both systems seem to point in the same directions, which is a mixture of dramatic and natural. I used to know my season but I don't anymore, and I feel like older people are somewhat overlooked and easily fall through the cracks. I have also been thrown off all my life, because I tend to identify with my mother, and people say I look like her, but our essences are very different and our palettes are different as well, because she has a lot of brightness to her that I do not. I think she was a true winter and I was a dark winter. She's always been closer to summer and can wear the brighter summer shades really well, but I think I look best in soft white, ivory, certain grey-blues and various shades of grey now. Is that even a palette?

    This is so interesting Jenn! I appreciate so much your honesty and going out of your comfort zone. Your analysis really got me thinking. It is hard to identify essences because one's personality comes to play too. One of my bosses is an example. If we look at the facial features she's born with, she ingenue - round face, full cheeks. Her body type has a softness and she's not tall. However, she clearly projects a dramatic flair and she dresses according to that too. When more toned down, say for corporate meetings, she 'scales down' the dramatic part and dresses classic but it isn't her best look. I once travelled with her and she dressed natural for the flight and didn't look like herself - the clothes were flattering but she looked underdressed somehow. Her personality comes into play and takes first place 😅

    I think I prefer Kitchener because Kibbe tries to mix physical lines with “vibes,” and a lot of times a person’s body lines don’t quite match their face and vibe so it gets quite confusing. I’m pretty sure I have a “soft classic” sort of body, but the style really doesn’t suit my face… I think perhaps I have a mix of dramatic, romantic, and ethereal. I look a lot like Morticia actually, but softer bone structure so less extreme of a dramatic look. I’m not particularly tall or elongated, I don’t have narrow hips, but I feel like there’s a dramatic undercurrent that can’t just be disregarded.

    I think I'm one of those exceptions! I'm a kibbe soft dramatic, so I have a dramatic bone structure in my face with some yin softness. However, I have some natural essence ("girl next door" look) and a small lower third, so even though my features should be intense, due to coloring, a low lower third, soft brows and a "natural" type nose it really makes me look quite youthful. Even like someone who could have ingenue essence. So in the end length/intensity of bone structure really says nothing if you don't take overall vibe into account. Soft lids, low contrast, asymmetry, soft brows, dimples, chubby cheeks, a small mouth,... can all exist WHILE having a long face. Since dramatics often times tend to have a slimmer jawline it adds to it as well. I think in the end it's a lot about the frame of the face (jawline + eyebrows) that determines a vibe.

I was confident in my Classic and Natural essences but I couldn't figure out my third essence. I knew it was yin, and I was swinging between Ethereal and Ingenue because they both had a softness to them. Then I remembered one of your notes was that there is a "fullness in my cheeks" which finally made it click - full cheeks lends a sense of youthfulness, therefore Ingenue! It's very interesting looking at both the overall look but also knowing how/which features contributes to the essences

    I would say you totally have an ethereal essence because (at least how I picture ethereal in my head) your eyes seem to be "withering" away from the center of your face to the outer corners, I don't know how to describe it better than that. It's like taking a quick brush stroke - the most concentrated part is the center and it feathers out to nothing. Including a calm look to the gaze.
    Also that feeling of ethereal that they know something more than us others now. Not like knowledge of experience but more a some kind of inner knowing that comes from some 'otherworldly' place.
    That is how I see ethereal and definitely see that in you.

    I'm still figuring out the rest of my mix but I think it might be Dramatic (longer middle third, a bit of a prominent slightly squarish jawline) and probably Classic as well (always being referred as mature for my age, serious, stuff I associate with Classics).

    Fantastic video, as usual. I do have a question (and this might be more Kibbe related if I think about it hard enough). Do you think a contributing factor to an essence can also be the distance the mouth is from the nose? I notice the softer essences have a shorter distance and the more “dramatic” leaning essences CAN have more distance between the nose and lips. If the distance is longer in yin types, the lips tend to curl up a bit. And for naturals, the distance is the shortest. Also the cupids bow. It tends to be smaller and pronounced in yin types and a bit more wider, making it less exaggerated in Yang types. Just thinking out loud at this point - it all confuses me. 😂

      @stylerefinement  Год назад +2

      Interesting - I would assume that essences like Gamine or Ingenue would be associated with short philtrum because a longer philtrum tends to make the face appear more mature! I have to look at this in more detail but interesting observation!

    Just a question about eyebrows, since you say they are important: I always feel the need to darken my eyebrows somewhat, as they don't naturally have much colour (or part of them doesn't), so would that mean I don't have much Ethereal, if any? It's just an essence I'm still debating myself, as I do feel some of my traits point towards it, but not sure ;) But anyway, I know I have at least one elongating essence, as very long hair suits me, and short most definitely doesn't ;)

    • @stylerefinement

      I think it’s hard to tell for sure, but one thing to look at could be how dark you usually wear your brows! Like if you actually need very high contrast, or if you’re adding a slight level of contrast?

    Interesting video! What if anything do you think is the role of character/personality in this? Does it influence the "essence" and/or rather the other way around?
    I hope this doesn't sound creepy but your lips also look very full and round and have a beautiful shape in my opinion, but you don't recognise yourself in the romantic type? Is that a personal preference or don't all full lips give off the romantic vibe, does the shape play a role? Your look does transmit some kind of serenity overall...

      LOL Thank you for the comment on my lips! I do have full lips but I also overdraw them slightly to enhance the fullness of them more. POC also have varying contrast levels. For example Asians have various contrast levels even though we all have dark hair. Compared to blonde-haired individuals we appear to have higher contrast, but amongst ourselves there is a difference. I'm sure the same logic applies for other races. All in all, low contrast seems like a pretty important indicator of the Ethereal essence to me!

    With Kitchener I always get confused because are the essences how you perceive YOURSELF or how others might perceive you? I always want to 'portray' myself as Gamine because I like that look and essence, but I actually don't think I am Gamine - definitely not in terms of Kibbe, I'm actually a Soft Natural, and probably not in Kitchener.
    But for years before discovering these systems, the Gamine style is how I think of myself and so dress accordingly... but maybe to other people I've been dressing all wrong for years!

    I'm trying to combine my classic essence with ingenue and a tiny bit of romantic. Not super easy, especially that in Kibbe I am dramatic classic. But what was very helpful for me in the video, were the words describing each essence, so of each of my three, I have chosen one and I resonate with the combination: elegant, sensual and innocent. Still, something is missing, as it now sounds too naive, like a little woman, which I am definitely not. I would add: with strong views. :))) Difficult task. :)))

    I have consumed so much information about Kitchener essences that by now I feel like I have a fairly good grasp of the system. I find it quite easy to type others. However, for some reason I find typing myself very difficult. I can immediately rule out gamine, ingenue and romantic. Classic doesn't really seem to fit either, and dramatic clothing does not suit me. So I guess I am a natural ethereal blend. But there is nothing blunt about my face, so I guess predominantly ethereal...? But this is supposed to be the rarest essence, yet somehow everyone on the internet thinks they have it. So I am really reluctant to type myself as an ethereal and feel like I am seeing things all wrong when it comes to myself. Maybe I should just book a professional consultation haha

      I think she's 1. classic 2.ethereal 3.ingenue with a bit of natural. I don't see much bluntness/ruggedness in her. To explain the ingenue: She has very delicate facial features, her lips are rounded, pouty, and small. Her eyes have the tiny bags under them that ingenues VERY often have. Her nose is long but still small/low visual weight. Her eyebrows are light in color/density and round in shape. Her cheeks aren't chubby nor defined but they're still rounded looking imo. Her face shape as a whole is round.
      When she smiled at 4:12 immediately all her ingenue features shine !!

Her features don't have the compact close togetherness of an ingenue. Her cheeks don't have the apple fullness. Her lips are full but not small. Her eyes are round and elongated in an ethereal way. Her nose is small but that's offset by her longer philtrum. And this jersey is very ingenue with peachy colouring. The cardigan feels more like her because it has a more down to earth vibe

      Check out Classic essence! In my humble opinion, Rosamund Pike may have Classic essence, Calista Flockhart may have Classic-Gamine blend, and Michelle Pfeiffer may be Classic-Romantic! However, be careful about comparing yourself to celebrities. They have a whole team of people working to build their public image, and they can have resources we, common folks, may not even know about. Your essence should come from you, and you alone. What do you see in yourself?
