My essence (I'm pretty sure) is dramatic, romantic and some ethereal mixed in. The fact that BOTH dramatic and romantic do queens checks out. I was at a convention last year with a friend and a booth was selling very beautiful crowns. I tried on many, trying to pick one, and I asked which was best and he said "literally all of them look right on you. It's like you're supposed to wear a crown." Which kinda clinches it for me, in terms of my essence.
It helps to be mindful about what effect outfits consistently give off when they go right and what you consistently struggle to pull off. My kibbe type is most likely FG, and my essence is most likely a mix of gamine/ingenue. I almost always look youthful and cutesy when outfits go right (which I don't like as a grown woman in her mid 40s). I struggle to look like a grown woman or refined/elegant or casual (all of which I would prefer).
I'm a gamine/ingenue too. I find that what makes me look elegant/refined is tailored clothing and lots of cool details! Also dressing in like a vintage style and a nice red lip.
Could you do another video on how to styleyourself if you love an aesthetic/vibe that you just not look like. Like i am a natural but i love flowery/feminine/ballet core.....
This depends on if your essence matches your Kibbe body type, but if it does, then the example you gave seems like that might be pretty easily achievable via shape and paring down details. Like, instead of tutus and ruffles, a pleated chiffon maxi skirt would give a long line, while being soft and flowy, and a fitted racerback tank top that's tucked in would show off your shoulders and be simple and athletic but still match the skirt. That style of top would kind of give athletic natural vibes but also ballet core leotard vibes. Then you just have to find them in colors that are the best of all worlds as far as flattering for your skin, vibes, and desired aesthetics. That might be a muted pink or a soft orange or lilac, because they're femme but still natural feeling. Natural isn't just camo colors. If you don't look good in muted colors and your skin favors bright, look to colors that appear in flowers, sunsets, and desserts maybe, like vibrant but not neon orange or purple. Then when you accessorize, you may want to keep things simpler but still lean toward the aesthetic you like. A high ponytail may be more natural than a bun, while still being kinda ballet, and some tiny hoops seem very ballerina. If you want to do a bow somewhere, it could be with thin ribbon that would hang down rather than a thicker fatter style bow. I'm leaning into the ballet core in my description, because that's the easiest for a natural out of what you mentioned. It's a style with a hint of athleticism. I think part of making styles we like fit us more can also be finding the versions that fit better. I'm very romantic with some gamine, and I actually do not like it, as I like to have more edgy and strong vibes. I realize though that it's easier for me to go witchy than to go punk, if you get what I mean. It's easier for me to wear a paper bag trouser that's cinched at the waist with a dark teal flowy button up than an actually fully structured suit. I think people should wear what they want as long as they're happy in it, but it you feel like you're clothes aren't flattering and it's making you less happy with yourself or your style, it's just easier and more reasonable to change the clothes than to try to drastically change your body. Also, I don't know if you're old enough to be aware of Sex in the City, but if you aren't then Google "Carrie Bradshaw outfits". Sarah Jessica Parker is a flamboyant natural, and you may not want quite the same lines if you aren't short like her, but she also is very natural in essence and would be great inspo for how to do that in a super girly way. One of her most iconic outfits from the show is almost the exact outfit I described above, but with a shorter and fuller skirt, because she can get away with that as a short FN.
what i do is just add slight feminine details into my outfits, not too much that it doesnt suit me, but just enough that i appear more "flowery." You can do this with the color, the textures, accessories etc. You should find the "natural" version of the pieces you want to wear. Like for tops, instead of a tight fitted/more ballet top, go for like a off shoulder, pink or smtg like that, so you still enhance the width in your frame while having that more "ballet feel."
This was such a cool way to understand the essence types! I’m an ethereal with a bit of romantic and people always tell me I look like a mermaid when I have long hair or like I’m from a pre raphaelite painting or something. I wonder if it’s common to get more unique compliments like that when you’re an ethereal? I think every type has their unique compliments, for example my face is mostly classic and i often get sth like "i didnt notice it at first, but you get prettier the more i look at you", wich is just the beauty standard nowadays i guess, cause balanced faces have not been trending for A WHILE. Therefore i also often get the "this picture of you should be an oil painting!" types of compliments haha.

Soft cosplaying a character according to your essence is such a fun idea! I have a very gamine face but a more natural style, but I can’t tell if I have any natural essence. Contenders for my secondary essence are natural, ingenue, and ethereal. I might try out some soft cosplays to help figure it out!
I have no idea what I am. When I was 5 years younger I used to be told that I was like a disney princess but I don’t think I have as much of a baby face anymore. I also used to mask my autism a lot less which probably contributed too
This and your find your facial type video really helped me understand my essence better then things like doing online tests, you are very good at explaining it! It's so obvious now that I'm a babyfaced ethereal- my mom smoked during pregnancy and it has slightly affected my growth. It only further gives me an 'ageless' kind of feel. I'm 26 but some people still think I'm like 17. I do like to dress in flowy garments, but mine are very colorful because having Roma (Indian) heritage through my dad's family and a light brown skin, I do look very good in bold colors.
Thanks Ellie-jean that was was so helpful now I know that I have soft dramatic body, theatrical romantic face, romantic, ethereal, dramatic essence and fire style root thank you
this was really helpful for me.. I'm a theatrical romantic in kibbe, but I could never understand why I was treated a certain way my entire life.. turns out my ingenue essence is very strong lol when you said "victim".. OOF.. loving mother, innocent girl in the big city, the good-hearted friend.. check check check.. people realllllly wanted me to stay in my designated background role lol but I'm a theatrical romantic. I'm meant to be the main character in my own life.
I used to be in theatre and was always casted as the slutty or seductive one, even though I didn’t always audition for that role. I know my body type is Romantic but I guess that makes my face a Romantic too! 😂
Just because your body is Romantic doesn't mean your face is as well! I definitively have a Romantic body type (very hourglass figure), but my face is more ingenue than romantic. You wouldn't cast me in the role of the seductress lol.
I think I have a mix of natural, romantic and classic and I can’t lean too much into any of them or else I look like I’m wearing a costume. For the romantic I always do my red hair wavy and voluminous and do my makeup with lots of blush and long eyelashes, also sometimes I’d wear bigger intricate queen-like earrings with rhinestones , for the natural I use an earthy palette - predominantly green, blue and golden brown, I’d have a very natural makeup base, nothing unnatural or too glam, and for the classic I use the rule of matching colours for example the colour of my top/ jacket would match my shoes or bag or my red hair, I would not put too much accessories and keep the outfits simple and still moderate in structure - not too slouchy and not too tight and constricted. I think I have found some balance in my outfits.😅
Very interesting to know what I can be cast in! Thank you! It's hard to feel confident in "what you think other people see in you" but my essences confirm what I thought based on your video. How fun!!
Oh interesting - this was very well described - I think my face is either dramatic or ethereal - inclined to say ethereal because my features are more soft.. But finally it was clear to see the difference between Dramatic, Natural, and Ethereal - I knew long lol but was having a hard time telling the difference when it was just photos of women/celebs in clothes. Now I can conclusively rule out natural. The role archetypes really helped ground it for me. Thanks!!
I feel like i have a bit of both ingenue and classic essence. Definitely feminine energy, but not in a sensual, romantic way nor do i think i look otherworldly. I often get called cute or pretty even though am 37 😅 especially get complimented on my smile, which i believe is an ingenue trait? As in, ingenues look better with a smile while romantics look sexy in "resting b**ch face" mode 😂 and ethereals look good with a faraway, distant look, etc. I *CAN* do sexy but it has to be understated and simple with clean lines...perhaps also to do with my soft classic body type (a hint of cleavage, or a skirt with a slit, or just a classic red cocktail dress). Anything too "in-your-face" and it looks a bit silly, as if am trying too hard 😬
I love this approach :D I'm very self conscious about my face but thinking of it as "it would be perfect for that role" definetely makes it easier to bear x) I'm (probably) the dramatic type
I love your videos and this one is my new favorite! Love the explanations for each type as well as you providing movie characters examples and real world examples. As a Latina, I also really appreciate you including women of color in your examples. Thank you and keep up the excellent content.
Anyone else notice that everyone seems to thibk they are ethereal lately? Its supossed to be the rarest type, so some of yall are lying to us or yourselves. Or maybe its just really hard to type yourself honestly too
It’s hard to type yourself but I also doubt it’s the rarest. Especially because a lot of black and asian women have a lot of ethereal or ingenue features. I don’t believe all races were taken into account when that statement was made. For example you can have your big three but you can have all 7 types show up in your face too. gamine and ingenue have similar small features, dramatic and ethereal have elongated features, for many they will have overlap. so it’s about your vibe as a whole imo. The way you speak and move and walk. I think there’s many ethereals.
@@spacebar9733 well kibbe said it was the rarest so I've gotta go with that. I agree that the way you carry yourself can be ethereal, but that isn't what is being discussed in these kibbe groups really
While I think there is an element of people just wishing to be ethereal, I think what is the rarest is to be ethereal-dominant (60% or more of your essence blend). Having ethereal somewhere in your blend is not as rare. Kitchener can also be very strict in his definitions of ethereal, but I think there's an element of Death of the Author here. For instance, he said Liv Tyler can't be ethereal because she doesn't have soft coloring (I think he typed her as ingenue/romantic), but she clearly has the ethereal elongation so I would say it's in her blend if not the top two. Ethereal maybe more than some of the other types I think can come through more as an energy people give off than strictly in their facial features which may be where some people are getting it. There's kind of a grey area of "dreamy" where ingenue slides into ethereal.
I think based on those examples I’m a mix between ingenue and classic with some ethereal mixed in. I play a lot of younger royalty like Disney Princesses and I have been in a bunch of period dramas of all kinds and it looks like I belong in that specific timeline. A lot of Victorian and medieval.
I took a really in-depth quiz that puts between ingenue and natural which informs where I put makeup but no the products, my vibe is dark ethereal what I call “demon baby” basically like one of those anime characters that is small and cute but also runs hell with an iron fist haha
Omg girl I just had to comment u. There's like this theatrical romantic recommendation for makeup that says to wear like lots of shimmery highlighter and even more like a face full at night. Like idk anything about geometry I just paid super close attention to what I looked like and what looked good, like how does he know all these things about me just by looking at my geometry? 😂😂😂 like THE only girl I knew, I bought this two-faced highlighter with crushed diamonds in it and I was so obsessed and in love and I would literally go out with my face COVERED in this highlighter like while I was a young adult like I swear just like its the most normal natural thing in the world I put it all over my face 😂😂😂
Just like actrices, you can tweak features to play multiple types of roles. So it comes down to what you feel like playing and could potentially play with your set of features.
My eyes and cheekbones are definitely ethereal and my other features lean romantic. Don't know what role that would be. Ghost wife? Something like that
I definitely have soft, rounded, and larger features, but I never would've thought of myself as the "Romantic" style type. I tend to dress for the Ingenue type. Interesting!
I'm a mix of ingenues and ethereal because I'm Asian American and I have like softer appearance. The only thing that causes an imbalance is I have a darker appearance because I have black hair, brown skin, and dark brown eyes. Also, I have piercing eyes the type that stares into your soul. I think roles that would suit me are a sorceress, high priestess, huntress similar to the moon goddess Artemis, siren or Mermaid, and dark or white swan because my spirit animal is a swan.
When I was in high school for projects I was always cast as the cheerleader/diva type (like the girl who would bring 8 suitcases on a trip). What essence would be for these?
It's funny, I also saw your short on hair for face types, and both that and this video, for me and my sister's face type, we already wear the hair and the fashion that you reccomend for us lol. My sister is the natural and she keeps long wavy hair and likes naturey clothing aesthetic, and I'm a gamine and have been doing experimental pixie cuts for years, and like tech wear or unusual style. Anyway just thought it was interesting lol.
Thank you, this was very informative. I'll use it for inspiration to better describe my female characters in my stories. Is there one like this for men?
I'm dramatic and I normally wear combat boots, leather jacket, a lot of black, red lips, hahahaha. I've been told that I'm intimidating several times and they get surprised when they realize that I laugh at myself and I am joking all the time.
I'm SN with Natural, Ingenue and Ethereal essence and I liked Emily Blunt from Jungle Cruise, but these clothes often lean towards classic, tailored style. I don't look good with a cinched waist due to my big chest and athletic shoulders, so it would be helpful to see how to work around it for more tailored and European styles for SN/Ing/Eth - not sensual like a romantic, more gently feminine and quite relaxed. Thank you for the wonderful videos!
I’m learning that I really have to ignore presuppositions when it comes to the body and essence id stuff. For example, I assumed I must be gamine or romantic because I’m short and very curvy regardless of my weight. But when I let myself forget what I know I actually am realizing that my curviness while it affects proportions in my clothes, is not as impactful in my face-on siloette as I originally believed. It’s mostly only visible from the side. Also with facial features, I have a proportionally small head, and a diamond face shape, largish eyes, and somewhat a-symmetrical features so I just assumed probably gamine, but the more I watch these videos it leads me to thing I’m actually predominantly natural with some romantic and possibly a little ethereal influence (although it’s hard to say if that part is just because of coloring since I have very muted colors in my face and barely there eyebrows but very dark brown hair). Still not sure what my features are all the way, but maybe someday I can afford the luxury of having someone else type me.
My face is more natural than I want to dress! I'm a Kibbe FN too. Yes, I look good in cargo pants and boho but it's just not me inside. And I love my waist! What to do when your essence on the outside doesn't match how you feel on the inside?
David Kibbe called me a Soft Classic, but I feel more Ingenue than Romantic, and suspect there's some Natural there, like a Classic with a secondary Soft Natural rather than just a secondary Romantic, if that makes sense. Anyway, from the time I was a child, I've been cast as mothers, maiden aunts, housekeepers, the occasional queen, etc. The only romantic lead I've ever played was Elaine in a community theatre production of Arsenic and Old Lace when I was 17 and I started rehearsal playing Dr. Inga Einstein. When the original Elaine dropped out, it was easier for them to find a new Dr. Einstein than a new Elaine. I always wanted to actually perform Dr. Einstein, though. I still hope to one day play Lady Bracknell and I'd love to do a southern version of Hyacinth Bucket, although the phone would have to be the same kind of Samsung the Queen had instead of a white slimline phone with last number redial, since even a southern Hyacinth wants to emulate the Royal Family... I do have a more expressive face than a typical Classic as well.
The more I watch your videos the more I understand I'm a dramatic and without noticing I channel those features with bold glasses, black leather and gold (I guess regal and a spy? Hahha), structured blazers and trousers, I love the confidence* boost you just offered me 😅
Naturals also get cast as dependable quiet friends and tragic Heroic Generals. Gamines also get cast as secret rebels. Spies are usually Classics as they can blend in and change disguise, Dramatics stand out so they're more action thriller spies not actual spy intrigues. The video maker probably watches alot of light teen comedies abd rom coms. Maybe watch wider genres before talking widely about film and being a "scholar".
If people compare me to Abigail Breslin, what essence(s) would that be? I'm not her look alike or anything, but people have said I remind them of her. I am also similar to her in age.
So my face is very ingenue, but I definitely have a romantic body type. I think this explains why I tend to go for the sweet feminine pieces instead of the more sexy feminine pieces true romantics can pull off. I think my ingenue face makes the sexy romantic stuff look not quite right on me.
How does hair play a role in your type? I have a soft facial features with some sharper bone structure (large round eyes, small nose, plump cheeks, high cheekbones, sharp jawline) that could be gamine. However, I have very long, dark, wavy hair that looks romantic. I feel like the stereotypical gamine pixie cut would look atrocious on me. Could I be a romantic? Side note- I have always been drawn to red, rose print, and romantic silhouettes.
I know I have a bit of both ingenue and ethereal in my face, but I also have a third one and I can't figure out if it's classic or natural, I don't really have any bluntness, I'm more soft and sharp (I have a straighter nose and a straight forehead, but oval face shape)... 🤔
I was about to say I might have "ingenues" vibes but then I saw the examples of the actresses and was like no way I am as pretty HAHAHA so I am once again not sure about my face type
I just still don’t get it 😂 when the examples are shown I feel like most of them I would have thought would belong to a different category. Just when I think I understand I’m confused again. Perhaps I just don’t have a good eye for this.
Some of the examples she used are confusing because the character/costumes have the essence she's referring to but the actress doesnt. Claire Danes always looked very miscast to me as The Star because she has no ethereal essence or even anything closer such as ingenue, her features are very blunt/wide. Her hair and costuming were what I think Ellie-Jean was referring to, but you can really see that they were having to fight her facial features to try and get the right effect.
Would you mind redoing this video with examples that are specific to black women? I appreciate the method but find all of your examples hard to identify with.
@@chrystianaw8256 do you have any examples of channels? I haven’t seen any that explain the systems the way Ellie-Jean does but I’d be happy to follow if there are.

this was really helpful for me..
@@Elrewin59 Yeah that was my point, I don’t think my face was romantic (I didn’t know what it was) until I watched this video.
@@Elrewin59 hey, same! romantic kibbe, but an ingenue essence..
Wait what, I could play queen or seductive woman!? 😱 omg thats SO flattering! 🥹❤
Would you make a video about combinations of essences, like in your shorts?
I really enjoyed those, and they were really helpful to me!
Very interesting to know what I can be cast in! Thank you! It's hard to feel confident in "what you think other people see in you" but my essences confirm what I thought based on your video. How fun!!
Thank you for doing this video! I had so many auditions where my agent said 'just sort of try to evoke the character' and had no clue what to do 🙌🏻
I feel like I've slowly come to understand and see essences in myself and others. This video helped confirm my ethereal, classic, and ingenue essence.
I love this approach :D
I'm very self conscious about my face but thinking of it as "it would be perfect for that role" definetely makes it easier to bear x)
I'm (probably) the dramatic type
Not disagreeing with you but aren't face types Kitchener rather than Kibbe? Kibbe doesn't even have ethereal and ingenue in his image IDs.
@bluesherbet2741 you're right, actually, but its still supposed to be the rarest
Doing more roles based on films or tv shows would be great, especially through different time periods.
I took a really in-depth quiz that puts between ingenue and natural which informs where I put makeup but no the products, my vibe is dark ethereal what I call “demon baby” basically like one of those anime characters that is small and cute but also runs hell with an iron fist haha
do you have a link to the quiz?
Yay an Ozark reference!
Just like actrices, you can tweak features to play multiple types of roles. So it comes down to what you feel like playing and could potentially play with your set of features.
im a gamine mixed with ingenue and that really checks out. my closet is like half cyber punk and half ballet princess
My eyes and cheekbones are definitely ethereal and my other features lean romantic. Don't know what role that would be. Ghost wife? Something like that
I wonder what a siren would be? Romantic and ethereal or something else?
I definitely have soft, rounded, and larger features, but I never would've thought of myself as the "Romantic" style type. I tend to dress for the Ingenue type. Interesting!
Very interesting but I’d like to see more representation of people of color especially black.
Only 12% of the US population is black. To be honest, they are over represented
When I still don’t know what what I’d be 😅 but loved the character breakdowns ❤
Girl you are amazing!! 🧡
Thank you so much for making this video!!!! 🙏🏻 😭❤🎉
I think I’m ingenue hmmmm. Super interesting!
Thank you, this was very informative. I'll use it for inspiration to better describe my female characters in my stories. Is there one like this for men?
Thank you for this very interesting video! Love your diadem!
My face is Romantic. I’m 5’9” and am either a flamboyant natural or soft dramatic body type. It’s hard for me to tell.
I believe that I’m a dramatic, thank you for making this video. 💘
I can't tell if I'm dramatic, romantic or ethereal. The celebrities i look like the most are young Kate Winslet and Julianna Marguiles
I'd say both of them have a combination of dramatic and romantic essence.
I agree they’re classic dramatic but celebrity lookalikes don’t really work imo unless you’re exact doppelgängers.
I don't know which essence features are most dominant for you but it sounds like there are some strong, warm, wise vibes there
I’m learning that I really have to ignore presuppositions when it comes to the body and essence id stuff.
I still dont know XD def not dramatic. Wait ok I think Ethereal
I feel like Arwen from lotr also definitely has to be an ethereal
they all look mostly the same to me TT
I can't decide if I have natural, ethereal, ingenue or classic face 😂
Please do more deep dive style root content!! 💖 (Earth!)
I have a lot of etherial in my face but I don't look good in white, more earthy tones. Do you have any recomendations?
Awesome video :)
Confusing
If people compare me to Abigail Breslin, what essence(s) would that be? I'm not her look alike or anything, but people have said I remind them of her. I am also similar to her in age.
She's VERY Ingenue and most likely natural as well (she has broad and blunt angles in her face). That's my guess!
My body is romantic, but my vibe is ethereal.
So my face is very ingenue, but I definitely have a romantic body type. I think this explains why I tend to go for the sweet feminine pieces instead of the more sexy feminine pieces true romantics can pull off. I think my ingenue face makes the sexy romantic stuff look not quite right on me.
Interesting that period piece is a category, but then i always think Gwenyth Paltrow suits pre Renaissance better than anything modern
I feel like I‘m a mix between ingenue and classic …
What about older women I’m 43
I already couldn't really tell what my facial essence is and now I'm even more confused
Most dramatic woman are cast as villains
Pure Romantic, Lush Yin
Is it possible to be gamine and ingenue?
Hmm. Natural, gamine, ingenue. Idk how to cosplay this lol. I cant tell if i lean more natural or gamine
Isn't Emilia Clarke more ingenue than romantic? And what about Marilyn who had an ingenue face and played the bombshell?
Marilyn is equally ingenue and romantic though.
The comment I was looking for. Emilia Clarke looks too cute for Daenerys in my opinion (or it is intentional casting).
Mailyn is romantic.
Marilyn had ingenue essence and a Romantic body, which gave her that contrast and she channeled it.
Would you mind redoing this video with examples that are specific to black women? I appreciate the method but find all of your examples hard to identify with.
I think there's blk contect creators doing the same thing with blk women examples.
@@chrystianaw8256 do you have any examples of channels? I haven’t seen any that explain the systems the way Ellie-Jean does but I’d be happy to follow if there are.
@baddieexp has a short but of course it doesn’t have the same depth as this long video
You are asking for her to do a whole lot. I’m surely not expecting that video from her anytime soon.
Sounds like I'm a mix of Gamine and Ingenue
Also notice how every Etheral girly is blonde. I'd say Tilda Swinton is Etheral, not Dramatic.
I still have no idea which one I am
The actress in any one type have different faces...
Well I still have no idea which one(s) I am
Whats Angelina Jolie?
My husband says i hv a sweet and intimidating face, honestly don't knw😂
I don't know what my face type is but eveything thinks I'm 12. (I'm 25.) -_-
What essence has a man jaw and a giant 5 head? That's mine.
Can someone tell me what face type I have? I can’t tell
If I’m a soft dramatic body type does that mean my face I dramatic?
No your body type isn’t your face type all of the time💗💗 but if you want to start there you can
Im a soft natural with an Engenue face, but those princessie styles sadly dont look flattering on me
I would be cast as the ugly best friend 😅😅
Tyme stamps asmr and resume?!?
