When I was younger I used to hate red lips because I thought it was too bright and I don't like to call attention to myself, I didn't even give it a try and I only wore light pink lipstick. But one day I saw myself in the mirror and I looked so pale, it made me appear sick (like Gwen Stefani in the video). I really hated the way I looked so I bought my first red lipstick and I was really surprised by the change. My face lit up, I no longer look like a zombie😅
I also look sickly with light pink lips but for me it’s because I’m so used to my natural lip color (on the darker side) and it just looks off especially when it’s a sheer formula and my natural lip color shines through
I can relate, Andy! I watch my own vids and I look DEAD without lipstick! 🧟 As a former smoker of 30+ years, a cherry red color also makes my teeth look brighter! 💄
I appreciate your straightforward approach. It gets annoying when youtubers need to make a million disclaimers nowadays in order to avoid offending someone. I understand why they do it, but it just means the advice we get becomes heavily diluted instead of straight to the point

I think symmetry also plays a big part in this. Bright red lips just draws attention and if there's any deviation from symmetry in the natural look or movement of your mouth then probably best not to go there
My lips are wildly uneven due to a car accident as a teen. I have loved wearing bright lipstick since college because it feels like I'm supposed to want to hide them and I don't.

It took me years to wear any lipstick because I wasn't ok with how crooked they are. Now it's a joke when I ask my friend how my lipstick looks and she tells me "crooked."
I find it comes down to personality and mood. Red in the colour spectrum is one of the most energetic. If you're not used to wearing red, or bright warm colours, and you're usually on the quiet, lowkey side, or just not into being center of attention, red can be uncomfortable to wear and feel out of balance, or just not fit to your personality. I think that's the best explanation. Red is the most historically common go-to colours for lipstick. People have made it work for them with different makeup techniques that went with the style. You can try out different ways of applying it, different ways of shaping your mouth. One thing is for sure, you need to precisely line your lips so the lipstick doesn't smudge over the lip line and doesn't bleed into the tiny creases around your mouth.

I have very soft features, light skin, low contrast. All the consultants in the cosmetic shops want me to wear salmon-nude. I remember one time i came to one of those shops without makeup, and i wanted to buy the dark red lipstick (i was REbyuing the shade i knew). The look on their faces was skeptical. And then i applied a bit of bronzer and that lipstick in that same hop and they looked kinda stunned because i looked a lot different and a lot better. I can't explain it or understand why, but dark lips look really good on me
As a soft autumn, yes exactly this! I finally found a colour that works, a brick red like you suggested, and on me this muted colour has the exact same effect as a bright bold lip, because my colours are naturally so muted!
I've been suggesting to other comments a less defined lip line when wearing red lips - it softens the overall look so it might be more suitable for you if your features are more youthful :)
My tips: If you wear dark colours you have to often over line, because dark colours shrink things, use dark lip liner to over line especially if you have a long philtrum. if you are warm you must wear warm reds vermilion, brick reds, cool you have to wear cool reds maroon, crimson.
I didn’t know they still sold lip liner! (My last purchase was in the mid-90’s!) Any advice for a brand that has a really good “cool” cherry &/ or a few cool, deep reds? Preferably something moisturizing

Very interested in the eye part. I wear red lips well for several of the reasons you named. Also I have been analysed as a (HOC) spring (always thought I was a summer because of my seemingly rosy skin, but I learned it's not necessarily how you look, but really what colours look best on you (tested by drapes). In theory you could be a winter redhead!)
I agree - cool skin doesn't always mean cool seasons! Emma Stone for example has a cool skin tone (rosy, pinky skin like you mentioned) but she's also widely agreed upon as a Spring, not summer or winter. It really depends on how the colors look against you as a whole!
Actually is not always about if colors look good or bad in you, but most about what effect they create to YOUR SKIN, that's how you tell your "season", so IT IS about how WE look,that's the point of finding your best colors 😅 If your skin look blue or purplish against warm colors then you're cool, if you look more yellowish against cool colors you're warm. Color analysis is about color that harmonize with our own coloration. Even if you look good (or a color looks good on you which makes no sense as it's about us, not about the colors) in some opposite temperature color that doesn't change the effect it creates with your skin (hue contrast) and doesn't change your undertone or "season"

Jenn, this is the first video I have watched from you...and YOU NAILED IT! I have never understood why I didn't like red or very saturated colors on my lips. Everything has always seemed like it was disconnected and sitting on top of my face! I am proud to have "Greek" nose. It seems to be "in proportion" with my face, but it does a very rounded tip that makes it appear heavy at the end. When I was younger it always felt unbalanced! Seeing those images of Julia Roberts and Jennifer Anniston were very helpful! I have large "almond-ish" shaped eyes with large, rounded sockets and a good smile with somewhat large teeth LOL. My eyes, high cheek bones, and smile are what people say they notice. Using eye liner with neutral or dark grey shadow in the creases and a bit at the corners (not all over the lids) and mascara on the upper lashes has always seemed to be my best and most "natural" look, along with a pinkish or mauve lip. I am definitely a "Winter" and could always throw on a black, cobalt blue, purple, or a turquoise t-shirt when I wanted to go without makeup. Now that I am in my 60"s the skin around my lips now has a puckering/wrinkly texture. I certainly don't want to emphasize that! Finding the right shade and intensity is getting harder for me, so I gravitate towards a more sheer types of products for my lips with a lip colored liner. Thank you for the great visuals! I can only wear blusher, eyebrow pencil and lipstick due to sensitive skin. I always wear red on my lips. I used to hate that I couldn't wear much makeup, especially mascara. However now that I'm older I find that the few products that I can wear are enough ❤

I prefer to wear a more muted shade of red lipstick (brownish-red, terracotta, brick-red, etc). I have Mac's Ruby Woo, which I rarely wear. But I prefer to apply Ruby Woo very lightly, so that it looks more like a stain instead of an intense red. I feel that red lipstick can be tricky to pull off because it draws attention to your face and can highlight things such as facial hair.....a double chin......scars/acne....as well as your teeth. It can also draw attention to other areas of your face such as dark circles if they're not well-concealed. Red lipstick looks better when the rest of your makeup is minimal. I don't think it looks good when women wear a bold red lip that is also competing with bold eyeshadow and too much contouring and bronzer and blinding highlighter and tarantula eyelashes.

Bright red lipstick makes me look like Jeff The Killer along with my goth look :") but nude lips or black/dark green/deep purple on the other hand? These just look on point and look great with bold eye makeup! I used to wear cinnamon red lipstick years ago and it was the best red on my face, along with wine red.
But because my features are well balanced, well defined and I wear glasses, I can play with bold eyes and mouth together. The big no-no's for me are nudes, "natural" makeup, and open, warm tones. Red for me has to be darker and cooler (I myself prefer burgundy to the "root" red in me).
I think essence plays into this somewhat as well, especially if you have strong ingenue essence - you end up looking like a kid wearing their mom's makeup when you put on a bold lip instead of it looking natural on you. It's not always bad, but the colour wears you vs you wear the colour
I look terrible in red lips. I am an autumn and I have very low contrast. I can only pull off a sheer red lip gloss. An actual opaque lipstick is so off on me. The sheerness of the lip gloss makes the color more blended and less stark.
Have you tried to wear it with less definition in the lip line? I find that it usually helps with people who don't like wearing full / bold red lips because it has a more natural look to it! I'm planning on making some shorts videos with more practical hair/makeup tips that you can actually follow along, and I'll add this topic to the list of how to wear a red lip with a less defined lip line :)

I think I look good in a cool toned bright red however I have bad teeth e.g. I didn't have braces and they are not very white, so I feel that red lips draws a lot of attention to this. Most red lipsticks don’t look good on me, but red lipsticks with a slight orange tint look great on me. Sometimes it’s all about the shade. I can’t pull off a dark, bold red, but I can pull off a kind of bright, slightly orange-tinted red (see my photo). I can only wear warm reds. Cold reds look very severe on me. I love the way that they look on other people, but I just can’t pull them off (and believe me, I’ve tried!).

I’ve found having a more blue undertone red has suited me much better (not that I really know what I’m talking about) but it fits much better with my face.

I sometimes have to watch your videos many times over to get it, but eventually it all sinks in, and I'm so thankful. I'd always thought I was cool toned. But since two white streaks started growing in over my eyebrows, I've realized that my skin is both red and yellow. Where once I'd thought cool-toned makeup looked clownish on my never before makeup skin. Now I've realized, much to my surprise, that brick red and/or muted down with brown is seamless with my coloring. I'd always thought makeup made me look full Bozo before! Your content is so original and good, thank you!
I have difficulties establishing my "season". The colour I cannot wear are usually pastels or beige, but I can "overcome" this by adding contrast. Beige bottoms with black top, for example.
Could it have something to do with your body shape? For example, I find lighter bottoms make me look bottom-heavy which I don't always like, so if I'm wearing a lighter bottom it can't be form-fitting!
It's partly because the 4 seasons method of color typing is a huge oversimplification. Color theory relies on 3 main attributes for every color, but seasonal types are typically determined by a best 2 out of 3 approach in which one of the traits considered is always warmth vs coolness (so spring and autumn are warm, but winter and summer are cool). They're then divided by light/dark or bright/muted (depending on the analyst's preferred method to split between the pairs, so autumn and winter are dark while spring and summer are light, but spring and winter are bright while summer and autumn are muted). I'm sure you already see the problem. If you're like me and your dominant coloring traits are based on the light/dark and bright/muted attributes rather than warm/cool, you're going to defy easy seasonal typing and may struggle to find the season that fits you. So, for instance, I need high contrast and saturation to my colors, but I also need warmth: warm and bright would classify me as spring, but spring lacks depth. Warm and dark would classify me as autumn, but autumn lacks brightness. Dark and bright would classify me as winter, but winter lacks warmth. As a result, the system breaks. You're an individual, and the system is merely a guideline. Have fun with it, and wear what works for you.
I look horrible with red lips because it makes my mouth look smaller similar to how wearing black makes you look thinner. Just doesn't work on my Asian face shape as I have chubbier cheeks and my mouth isn't wide enough to pull off darker/bolder colors. I never wear any kind of make up and I'm only recently dipping my toes into it by trying out lip stains/tints and yeah, definitely learned I can't pull of red! 😄
I like wearing the red lips with less defined lip line (like the K-beauty look) and blend out the colours, and I find it makes the look more natural :) I'm planning on making a short on how to achieve the look! 😄

Thank you! This makes so much sense! I’ve tried to figure out my color season and so far I think I’m Medium-bright with neutral undertone, not sure if I’m more warm or cool. I like red lips, because I think they make me look more mature. But I could never say if warm or cool is better because I think all red lips draw attention to my lips. So a lot of what you said makes sense. My mouth is narrow, only slightly wider than my nose when I’m not smiling. And I have a long philtrum. My facial features are quite round and I have a short face between an oval and a diamond so drawing the attention on my lips makes it appear longer and more mature I guess. I think all thirds of my face are equal, but because of my facial features the middle third is prominent. I have a short nose with a high nose bridge so my nose appears most prominent. My eyes are round with hooded eyelids, but not covering the eye and my lips are also narrow. Since all my other facial features have low visual weight and are narrow in width my nose appears wide in comparison even though it is the same width as my eyes. I guess it has high visual weight. My forehead also has a widows peak so it appears short even though it’s in proportion.
Ah, I finally understand why red lips don’t look good on me and I lean towards nude lips. I have close set eyes, a longer philtrum and more prominent nose which are all more mature features. Red lips just seem to emphasise that.
Super informative video! =D I'm not sure if I make mistakes or not, neither my colour palette in general, but I think any king or red lips suit me (for example I wear brick red in my profile picture to match my hoodie). Buy since I have more plump roundish lips, I like to gradient the vibrant colour on top of a nude. Faded edges make my lips look more plump, and the fact that I don't have a solid block of colour allows me to keep attention on my eyes. =)

The trick to choosing red lipstick is firstly finding out your skin tone : cool, neutral or warm. Warm skin tones sparkle with orange-red lipstick. 🍊💄 Neutral can choose whatever ever shade complements an outfit. Lucky people !!! 💃💄 Cool shades light up with pink-red lipstick, as this has blue undertones to bring the skin vibrancy. 🎉💄 Also shiny lips are generally for nights out and matt lips for daywear. 🌞🌚 Enjoy your red lip & above all you do you !!💄💄💄
Thanks for saying this! People often don’t know that they’ve just chosen the wrong shade for their skin tone and write off red lips forever. Marilyn Monroe’s famous red lipstick was sold at auction recently, and it turns out it was actually closer to a bright orange than a true red! Skin tone makes all the difference! :)
I am neutral with olive undertones. There's lot of green in my skin BUT I look my best in cooler tones like green, denim blue, pigeon blue, grayish beige, violet. For make up anything with a cooler undertone works, beside foundation which has to be yellowish. I look horrible in yellow or (God forbids) in orange. My hair is ashy brown by the way. Hahah My point is- I don't think these theories work on everyone. With time you just have to figure it out for yourself.
I’m neutral but if I wear a warm red it looks orange on me and if I wear a cool red it just looks weird, I can never find a red that looks red once it’s on me!
i found for me it was the colour that was the issue! As I have a warmer skin tone wearing a cooler toned brighter red made me look washed out and made me teeth appear more yellow! But by wearing a more warm red and a bit more muted it complimented my skin and made my teeth appear whiter!
Aaa there's so much science to it. I don't know where to start. I just want to wear a plum red lipstick which unfortunately doesn't look good on me. Most of the red actually. Please do a video on how to emphasize or minimize your lower third is it's longer or smaller. Other than lip color, what can be done? Contour, blush, hair?
I used to love wearing bright red lipstick in my teens, but now in my 30's I prefer more muted colors. My color palette is a wild mix of warm and cool, dark and light, so I can wear pretty much any colors I want, but I look best in colors close to the neutral range. My lips are small, but if I just overdraw very strategically and carefully mind my near invisible double lining, I think I can look great in a bold red lipstick, both burgundy and wine. Very clear, like firetruck red, can luck a bit weird on me though. It's bit too neony for me I think. Bold eye makeup is more challenging for me, both because of my eye shape (small, narrow, slightly hooded, low eyebrows) and because I have very sensitive eyes that easily get runny. My best feature is honestly my eyebrows, imo. I barely need to do anything to them. I just really like how they're arched but not overly so, and dense but not extremely thick. So the easiest for me to focus on is actually my brows. Ie do a very natural makeup look but with slightly enhanced brows. I actually like all of my facial features, even my big nose, but with makeup applied wrongly I easily end up emphasizing that they're not really coherent together. But I mean I can tackle that somewhat well now after having had years of practicing different techniques. But it always helps to learn more.
So, in short, I'm just not suited for red because i have a horizontally narrow mouth and small, close set eyes. Plus, I have absolutely no clue what my palette type is, and I honestly don't give a farting drumstick. Well, screw what anyone else thinks. Outside of the military, I'm gonna wear freaking red.
I think anyone can wear red if it is the right shade and applied in the right way, ie, muted application vs hard lines, etc. It also depends on the formula, such as gloss vs matte or stain. There is a flattering red out there for you!
I have less pronounced lips but because of the high visual weight of the rest of my face (long midface, prominent jaw, large pronounced eyes, and unique nose shape) I find that adding a bold color with overlining to my lips balances out how low the attention to my lips is without it since they are on the thinner side (especially thin at the ends) and have a little less width. When I’m going out on a more casual day I also stick to the tips from this video by using a muted lipstick and drawing attention to my eyes.

I am 20 years old and I thought this video was going to be philosophical and explain the psychological factors such as the thing that it makes you look like you're 30 years old and a lot sexier and mature, rather than a 20-year-old baby girl and ofc it's a good thing but when you look at the mirror you're like wtf? I never wore red lipstick until I got the Fenty MVP red lipstick. It works when I fill in my lips, no lip liner, and it draws attention to them. Any other shade of red just doesn't look red enough.

Wearing red lips more often, like some of the celebrities you showed, makes it feel more comfortable as a look. I definitely thought I looked goofy at first but then found a coral red I liked. That color lipstick, and wearing it a few times a week, has made me more used to the look of red lips 🙂 good tips.
Mine do not work with the scarlet lip Taylor favours, but I think a cool red is quite nice. Sometimes true red? I wish the scarlet lip was wearable for me but I’m cool toned. I have what other people would consider slightly fuller lips, especially because my mouth is surrounded by a pale border, meaning they are actually bigger than they look. They are however smaller than my nose and eyes, so they are very confusing. I also need to be very careful with over lining my lips as my mouth is close to tip of nose. Honestly I’m quite confused. Sometimes it works-when I wear Korean lip stains for instance-and sometimes I try over and over and give up. And sometimes I try and it’s perfect! So I don’t even know lol

It took me years to discover that red lips looked awful on me because red is too bright of a color for me... I always thought it was because most lipsticks were cooler tone red... then I bought an orange lipstick and it looked really really bad lol I got Romand's Juicy Lasting Tint in eat dotori which is more muted and warmer color... but it doesn't look muted or warm on me, it just looks red, but much more natural than bright reds... but it might also be I have a short mouth and other factors now that I think about it lol

darker red always looked better on me (like, with a bit of blue undertone). I don't have a narrow mouth but I have a big nose and I guess my seasonal palette leans more to autumn... although I look good in pure black or pure white. So orange or bright red lips are hard to use for me, but I wanted to use more red lips 😅😂 specailly bc it makes my eyes pop so much more, like Nichole Richie. Her eyes look greener with bright red lips, even if it's not in her color palette.
I use red not often. But when i use it I have to have also strong eyes make-up. So it is more evening make-up. My lips are narrow thin🙄 my eyes are big. Haha gosh describing myself seems terrible. Anyway, i also saw that latin girls are using red lips all day. More suitable for them with their black hair, brown eyes and darker skin. The red on white skin and light eyes is different.

I am a summer and live in a beach town so I’m often make up free or very natural dust rose on lips checks and eyes. Buuuuut when I do want something a little more glam I opt for a bright lip colour called “radish”. Exactly the colour of a radish skin. Cool pink red. With dewy skin, a little mascara I feel little a French film star.
How do you define red? It turns out, I look best with a slightly purplish red. You don't need complex seasonal analysis, just compare some warmer (orange , coral, tomato), true red (fire truck, blood), and cooler (plum, purple) reds. And you're right about saturation. Some people need a softer diluted colour. Btw, I don't think that's Taylor's colour either. She can improve.
Yardley Clear Red was my ultimate red lip. L’Oreal used to have Colour Juice in Island Punch which was tied with the Revlon Lip Butter in Cherry Tart for my second favorite. What they all have in common is that they’ve been discontinued. All of them are also sheer. A matte, bright, or deep red lip looks horrid on me.
I looked good in red lips when I was in middle school and danced on the football field. It was great for projecting one's face to the stands while under that stadium light that naturally washes everyone out. However, wearing it even to a formal event just feels too much to me. Though the makeup highlighted my face when performances, I feel like it actually washes out my face up close. It's weird.
I have a small mouth that’s only a little wider than my nose, and thin lips. I absolutely look bad on red lipstick. 💄 My coloring is Soft, which is also a factor. Finally, my smile is a little asymmetrical.
The shade of red is also important - is it a warm red or one with blue undertone? Overall style of clothing and well-groomed hair is important. I think bright red is good for dressier feminine looks or more business like clothing, rather than casual. Yes, Taylor Swift can pull it off in any outfit, but a style mismatch is not good for most of us. Another consideration is confidence and attitude. I had issues when I first started wearing hats, because it seemed too costume like and flashy, but then I got used to seeing myself expressing my style that way, and it became normal. If you never wear red lipstick and nails, it seems too much, but after it is a habit, you don't feel that way.

When I was younger I used to hate red lips because I thought it was too bright and I don't like to call attention to myself, I didn't even give it a try and I only wore light pink lipstick. But one day I saw myself in the mirror and I looked so pale, it made me appear sick (like Gwen Stefani in the video). I really hated the way I looked so I bought my first red lipstick and I was really surprised by the change. My face lit up, I no longer look like a zombie😅
Looking pale is many times due to health issues like iron deficiency for example.

I think symmetry also plays a big part in this. Bright red lips just draws attention and if there's any deviation from symmetry in the natural look or movement of your mouth then probably best not to go there

It took me years to wear any lipstick because I wasn't ok with how crooked they are. Now it's a joke when I ask my friend how my lipstick looks and she tells me "crooked."
I find it comes down to personality and mood. Red in the colour spectrum is one of the most energetic. If you're not used to wearing red, or bright warm colours, and you're usually on the quiet, lowkey side, or just not into being center of attention, red can be uncomfortable to wear and feel out of balance, or just not fit to your personality. I think that's the best explanation. Red is the most historically common go-to colours for lipstick. People have made it work for them with different makeup techniques that went with the style. You can try out different ways of applying it, different ways of shaping your mouth. One thing is for sure, you need to precisely line your lips so the lipstick doesn't smudge over the lip line and doesn't bleed into the tiny creases around your mouth.

I have very soft features, light skin, low contrast. All the consultants in the cosmetic shops want me to wear salmon-nude. I remember one time i came to one of those shops without makeup, and i wanted to buy the dark red lipstick (i was REbyuing the shade i knew). The look on their faces was skeptical. And then i applied a bit of bronzer and that lipstick in that same hop and they looked kinda stunned because i looked a lot different and a lot better. I can't explain it or understand why, but dark lips look really good on me
I agree - the rest of your makeup can also have a huge effect on your ability to pull off different colours! 😊

As a soft autumn, yes exactly this! I finally found a colour that works, a brick red like you suggested, and on me this muted colour has the exact same effect as a bright bold lip, because my colours are naturally so muted!

My tips: If you wear dark colours you have to often over line, because dark colours shrink things, use dark lip liner to over line especially if you have a long philtrum. if you are warm you must wear warm reds vermilion, brick reds, cool you have to wear cool reds maroon, crimson.

Very interested in the eye part. I wear red lips well for several of the reasons you named. Also I have been analysed as a (HOC) spring (always thought I was a summer because of my seemingly rosy skin, but I learned it's not necessarily how you look, but really what colours look best on you (tested by drapes). In theory you could be a winter redhead!)
I agree - cool skin doesn't always mean cool seasons! Emma Stone for example has a cool skin tone (rosy, pinky skin like you mentioned) but she's also widely agreed upon as a Spring, not summer or winter. It really depends on how the colors look against you as a whole!

Actually is not always about if colors look good or bad in you, but most about what effect they create to YOUR SKIN, that's how you tell your "season", so IT IS about how WE look,that's the point of finding your best colors 😅
If your skin look blue or purplish against warm colors then you're cool, if you look more yellowish against cool colors you're warm.
Color analysis is about color that harmonize with our own coloration. Even if you look good (or a color looks good on you which makes no sense as it's about us, not about the colors) in some opposite temperature color that doesn't change the effect it creates with your skin (hue contrast) and doesn't change your undertone or "season"

Jenn, this is the first video I have watched from you...and YOU NAILED IT! I have never understood why I didn't like red or very saturated colors on my lips. Everything has always seemed like it was disconnected and sitting on top of my face! I am proud to have "Greek" nose. It seems to be "in proportion" with my face, but it does a very rounded tip that makes it appear heavy at the end. When I was younger it always felt unbalanced! Seeing those images of Julia Roberts and Jennifer Anniston were very helpful! I have large "almond-ish" shaped eyes with large, rounded sockets and a good smile with somewhat large teeth LOL. My eyes, high cheek bones, and smile are what people say they notice. Using eye liner with neutral or dark grey shadow in the creases and a bit at the corners (not all over the lids) and mascara on the upper lashes has always seemed to be my best and most "natural" look, along with a pinkish or mauve lip. I am definitely a "Winter" and could always throw on a black, cobalt blue, purple, or a turquoise t-shirt when I wanted to go without makeup. Now that I am in my 60"s the skin around my lips now has a puckering/wrinkly texture. I certainly don't want to emphasize that! Finding the right shade and intensity is getting harder for me, so I gravitate towards a more sheer types of products for my lips with a lip colored liner. Thank you for the great visuals! I can only wear blusher, eyebrow pencil and lipstick due to sensitive skin. I always wear red on my lips. I used to hate that I couldn't wear much makeup, especially mascara. However now that I'm older I find that the few products that I can wear are enough ❤

I prefer to wear a more muted shade of red lipstick (brownish-red, terracotta, brick-red, etc).
I have Mac's Ruby Woo, which I rarely wear. But I prefer to apply Ruby Woo very lightly, so that it looks more like a stain instead of an intense red. I feel that red lipstick can be tricky to pull off because it draws attention to your face and can highlight things such as facial hair.....a double chin......scars/acne....as well as your teeth. It can also draw attention to other areas of your face such as dark circles if they're not well-concealed. Red lipstick looks better when the rest of your makeup is minimal. I don't think it looks good when women wear a bold red lip that is also competing with bold eyeshadow and too much contouring and bronzer and blinding highlighter and tarantula eyelashes.

These are absolutely awesome tips. You certainly know what you're talking about. I would advise using fewer sound effects though, as it's distracting and little annoying. I'm just saying this in case some viewers are deterred from your great content because of it.
Bright red lipstick makes me look like Jeff The Killer along with my goth look :") but nude lips or black/dark green/deep purple on the other hand? These just look on point and look great with bold eye makeup! I used to wear cinnamon red lipstick years ago and it was the best red on my face, along with wine red.
But because my features are well balanced, well defined and I wear glasses, I can play with bold eyes and mouth together. The big no-no's for me are nudes, "natural" makeup, and open, warm tones. Red for me has to be darker and cooler (I myself prefer burgundy to the "root" red in me).
I think essence plays into this somewhat as well, especially if you have strong ingenue essence - you end up looking like a kid wearing their mom's makeup when you put on a bold lip instead of it looking natural on you. It's not always bad, but the colour wears you vs you wear the colour

I look terrible in red lips. I am an autumn and I have very low contrast. I can only pull off a sheer red lip gloss. An actual opaque lipstick is so off on me. The sheerness of the lip gloss makes the color more blended and less stark.
Have you tried to wear it with less definition in the lip line? I find that it usually helps with people who don't like wearing full / bold red lips because it has a more natural look to it! I'm planning on making some shorts videos with more practical hair/makeup tips that you can actually follow along, and I'll add this topic to the list of how to wear a red lip with a less defined lip line :)

I think I look good in a cool toned bright red however I have bad teeth e.g. I didn't have braces and they are not very white, so I feel that red lips draws a lot of attention to this. Most red lipsticks don’t look good on me, but red lipsticks with a slight orange tint look great on me. Sometimes it’s all about the shade. I can’t pull off a dark, bold red, but I can pull off a kind of bright, slightly orange-tinted red (see my photo). I can only wear warm reds. Cold reds look very severe on me. I love the way that they look on other people, but I just can’t pull them off (and believe me, I’ve tried!).
Shade is definitely an important factor! 😊
You made some interesting points that I hadn't considered before. By contrast, as a Winter, I look great in red lipstick and truly awful in nudes.

But since two white streaks started growing in over my eyebrows, I've realized that my skin is both red and yellow. Where once I'd thought cool-toned makeup looked clownish on my never before makeup skin. Now I've realized, much to my surprise, that brick red and/or muted down with brown is seamless with my coloring. I'd always thought makeup made me look full Bozo before! I have difficulties establishing my "season". The colour I cannot wear are usually pastels or beige, but I can "overcome" this by adding contrast. Beige bottoms with black top, for example.
Could it have something to do with your body shape? For example, I find lighter bottoms make me look bottom-heavy which I don't always like, so if I'm wearing a lighter bottom it can't be form-fitting!

It's partly because the 4 seasons method of color typing is a huge oversimplification. Color theory relies on 3 main attributes for every color, but seasonal types are typically determined by a best 2 out of 3 approach in which one of the traits considered is always warmth vs coolness (so spring and autumn are warm, but winter and summer are cool). They're then divided by light/dark or bright/muted (depending on the analyst's preferred method to split between the pairs, so autumn and winter are dark while spring and summer are light, but spring and winter are bright while summer and autumn are muted).
I'm sure you already see the problem. If you're like me and your dominant coloring traits are based on the light/dark and bright/muted attributes rather than warm/cool, you're going to defy easy seasonal typing and may struggle to find the season that fits you. So, for instance, I need high contrast and saturation to my colors, but I also need warmth: warm and bright would classify me as spring, but spring lacks depth. Warm and dark would classify me as autumn, but autumn lacks brightness. Dark and bright would classify me as winter, but winter lacks warmth. As a result, the system breaks.
You're an individual, and the system is merely a guideline. Have fun with it, and wear what works for you.
I look horrible with red lips because it makes my mouth look smaller similar to how wearing black makes you look thinner. Just doesn't work on my Asian face shape as I have chubbier cheeks and my mouth isn't wide enough to pull off darker/bolder colors. I never wear any kind of make up and I'm only recently dipping my toes into it by trying out lip stains/tints and yeah, definitely learned I can't pull of red! 😄
I like wearing the red lips with less defined lip line (like the K-beauty look) and blend out the colours, and I find it makes the look more natural :) I'm planning on making a short on how to achieve the look! 😄
@@stylerefinement this style worke far better for me too. Using a sharp line makes me look stern which is desirable sometimes but not as a casual look.

I have never had the patience for hair and makeup. I'm always busy building things or doing projects. I tried at one point and gave up. I literally look like Julia Robert's doppelganger. People stop me thinking I'm her- for decades now. I'm happy to say, according to this video, I did figure makeup out correctly. I look like crap in red lips and I always make my eyes the focal point. You are the only beauty channel I've ever subscribed to. I admit, I don't understand the color pallet for faces or seasonal makeup, but I'm learning thanks to your channel.

Medium-bright with neutral undertone, not sure if I’m more warm or cool. I like red lips, because I think they make me look more mature. But I could never say if warm or cool is better because I think all red lips draw attention to my lips. So a lot of what you said makes sense. My mouth is narrow, only slightly wider than my nose when I’m not smiling. And I have a long philtrum. My facial features are quite round and I have a short face between an oval and a diamond so drawing the attention on my lips makes it appear longer and more mature I guess. I think all thirds of my face are equal, but because of my facial features the middle third is prominent. I have a short nose with a high nose bridge so my nose appears most prominent. My eyes are round with hooded eyelids, but not covering the eye and my lips are also narrow. Since all my other facial features have low visual weight and are narrow in width my nose appears wide in comparison even though it is the same width as my eyes. I guess it has high visual weight. My forehead also has a widows peak so it appears short even though it’s in proportion.

Ah, I finally understand why red lips don’t look good on me and I lean towards nude lips. I have close set eyes, a longer philtrum and more prominent nose which are all more mature features. Red lips just seem to emphasise that.

Super informative video! =D I'm not sure if I make mistakes or not, neither my colour palette in general, but I think any king or red lips suit me (for example I wear brick red in my profile picture to match my hoodie). Buy since I have more plump roundish lips, I like to gradient the vibrant colour on top of a nude. Faded edges make my lips look more plump, and the fact that I don't have a solid block of colour allows me to keep attention on my eyes. =)

Marilyn Monroe’s famous red lipstick was sold at auction recently, and it turns out it was actually closer to a bright orange than a true red! Skin tone makes all the difference! :)
I am neutral with olive undertones. There's lot of green in my skin BUT I look my best in cooler tones like green, denim blue, pigeon blue, grayish beige, violet. For make up anything with a cooler undertone works, beside foundation which has to be yellowish. I look horrible in yellow or (God forbids) in orange. My hair is ashy brown by the way. Hahah
My point is- I don't think these theories work on everyone. With time you just have to figure it out for yourself.
I’m neutral but if I wear a warm red it looks orange on me and if I wear a cool red it just looks weird, I can never find a red that looks red once it’s on me!

i found for me it was the colour that was the issue! As I have a warmer skin tone wearing a cooler toned brighter red made me look washed out and made me teeth appear more yellow! But by wearing a more warm red and a bit more muted it complimented my skin and made my teeth appear whiter!

I used to love wearing bright red lipstick in my teens, but now in my 30's I prefer more muted colors. My color palette is a wild mix of warm and cool, dark and light, so I can wear pretty much any colors I want, but I look best in colors close to the neutral range. My lips are small, but if I just overdraw very strategically and carefully mind my near invisible double lining, I think I can look great in a bold red lipstick, both burgundy and wine. Very clear, like firetruck red, can luck a bit weird on me though. It's bit too neony for me I think. Bold eye makeup is more challenging for me, both because of my eye shape (small, narrow, slightly hooded, low eyebrows) and because I have very sensitive eyes that easily get runny.
My best feature is honestly my eyebrows, imo. I barely need to do anything to them. I just really like how they're arched but not overly so, and dense but not extremely thick. So the easiest for me to focus on is actually my brows. Ie do a very natural makeup look but with slightly enhanced brows. I actually like all of my facial features, even my big nose, but with makeup applied wrongly I easily end up emphasizing that they're not really coherent together. But I mean I can tackle that somewhat well now after having had years of practicing different techniques. But it always helps to learn more.

So, in short, I'm just not suited for red because i have a horizontally narrow mouth and small, close set eyes. Plus, I have absolutely no clue what my palette type is, and I honestly don't give a farting drumstick. Well, screw what anyone else thinks. Outside of the military, I'm gonna wear freaking red.
I think anyone can wear red if it is the right shade and applied in the right way, ie, muted application vs hard lines, etc. It also depends on the formula, such as gloss vs matte or stain. There is a flattering red out there for you!
I have less pronounced lips but because of the high visual weight of the rest of my face (long midface, prominent jaw, large pronounced eyes, and unique nose shape) I find that adding a bold color with overlining to my lips balances out how low the attention to my lips is without it since they are on the thinner side (especially thin at the ends) and have a little less width. When I’m going out on a more casual day I also stick to the tips from this video by using a muted lipstick and drawing attention to my eyes.

I am 20 years old and I thought this video was going to be philosophical and explain the psychological factors such as the thing that it makes you look like you're 30 years old and a lot sexier and mature, rather than a 20-year-old baby girl and ofc it's a good thing but when you look at the mirror you're like wtf? Who is this? I don't look like this?! 😂😂 and your going to be thinking if that's going to look "too much", especially if you have winged eyeliners and porcelain foundation too. 😂
I never wore red lipstick until I got the Fenty MVP red lipstick. It works when I fill in my lips, no lip liner, and it draws attention to them. Any other shade of red just doesn't look red enough.

Wearing red lips more often, like some of the celebrities you showed, makes it feel more comfortable as a look. I definitely thought I looked goofy at first but then found a coral red I liked. That color lipstick, and wearing it a few times a week, has made me more used to the look of red lips 🙂 good tips.

Mine do not work with the scarlet lip Taylor favours, but I think a cool red is quite nice. Sometimes true red? I wish the scarlet lip was wearable for me but I’m cool toned. I have what other people would consider slightly fuller lips, especially because my mouth is surrounded by a pale border, meaning they are actually bigger than they look. They are however smaller than my nose and eyes, so they are very confusing. I also need to be very careful with over lining my lips as my mouth is close to tip of nose. Honestly I’m quite confused. Sometimes it works-when I wear Korean lip stains for instance-and sometimes I try over and over and give up. And sometimes I try and it’s perfect! So I don’t even know lol

It took me years to discover that red lips looked awful on me because red is too bright of a color for me... I always thought it was because most lipsticks were cooler tone red... then I bought an orange lipstick and it looked really really bad lol
I got Romand's Juicy Lasting Tint in eat dotori which is more muted and warmer color... but it doesn't look muted or warm on me, it just looks red, but much more natural than bright reds...
but it might also be I have a short mouth and other factors now that I think about it lol

darker red always looked better on me (like, with a bit of blue undertone). I don't have a narrow mouth but I have a big nose and I guess my seasonal palette leans more to autumn... although I look good in pure black or pure white. So orange or bright red lips are hard to use for me, but I wanted to use more red lips 😅😂 specailly bc it makes my eyes pop so much more, like Nichole Richie. Her eyes look greener with bright red lips, even if it's not in her color palette.

I use red not often. But when i use it I have to have also strong eyes make-up. So it is more evening make-up. My lips are narrow thin🙄 my eyes are big. Haha gosh describing myself seems terrible. Anyway, i also saw that latin girls are using red lips all day. More suitable for them with their black hair, brown eyes and darker skin. The red on white skin and light eyes is different.
Even with darker hair, eyes and skin (me lol) red can seem quite unnatural! It depends on so many factors 😊

I am a summer and live in a beach town so I’m often make up free or very natural dust rose on lips checks and eyes. Buuuuut when I do want something a little more glam I opt for a bright lip colour called “radish”. Exactly the colour of a radish skin. Cool pink red. With dewy skin, a little mascara I feel little a French film star.

How do you define red? It turns out, I look best with a slightly purplish red. You don't need complex seasonal analysis, just compare some warmer (orange , coral, tomato), true red (fire truck, blood), and cooler (plum, purple) reds. And you're right about saturation. Some people need a softer diluted colour. Btw, I don't think that's Taylor's colour either. She can improve.

Yardley Clear Red was my ultimate red lip. L’Oreal used to have Colour Juice in Island Punch which was tied with the Revlon Lip Butter in Cherry Tart for my second favorite. What they all have in common is that they’ve been discontinued. All of them are also sheer. A matte, bright, or deep red lip looks horrid on me.

I looked good in red lips when I was in middle school and danced on the football field. It was great for projecting one's face to the stands while under that stadium light that naturally washes everyone out.
However, wearing it even to a formal event just feels too much to me. Though the makeup highlighted my face when performances, I feel like it actually washes out my face up close. It's weird.
True - stage makeup / performance makeup tends to be heavier to make sure your face is visible!

I have a small mouth that’s only a little wider than my nose, and thin lips. I absolutely look bad on red lipstick. 💄 My coloring is Soft, which is also a factor. Finally, my smile is a little asymmetrical.
The shade of red is also important - is it a warm red or one with blue undertone? Overall style of clothing and well-groomed hair is important. I think bright red is good for dressier feminine looks or more business like clothing, rather than casual. Yes, Taylor Swift can pull it off in any outfit, but a style mismatch is not good for most of us.
Another consideration is confidence and attitude. I had issues when I first started wearing hats, because it seemed too costume like and flashy, but then I got used to seeing myself expressing my style that way, and it became normal. If you never wear red lipstick and nails, it seems too much, but after it is a habit, you don't feel that way.
