@@MCHopie What did he mean by "Don't trick me into seeing bs" did he mean like bs as in it being a more generic marvel movie than the other deadpool movies?
I feel like it would have been 100x more interesting if Rain had actually died during the elevator scene, and Andy survived. Not only would it be an interesting premise of what a synthetic does after its directive is failed/gone but it would be a break in the trope of final girl. I was so disappointed.
What annoys me about the cgi deepfake is that it could have easily been replaced by anything else and it would have had the same impact on the story. Hell, I would have preferred a Working Joe considering the fact that this film’s production design already looks very similar to Alien Isolation.
The face hugger in Aliens had strength because it wrapped its tail around Ripleys throat and was choking her. She managed to initially throw it away when it wasn’t connected. You can also see the strength it has when Hicks and Vasquez are wrestling with it after pulling it off of Ripley.
Just got back from Romulus. While I understand (most of) your criticisms (and agree with alot of it), I thought it was a good and fun movie. Had some problems sure, but as an Alien fan this was the kind of movie I hoped to see. Maybe my opinion will change after a while or after a rewatch, but for now I had a blast watching it.
no one ever mentions that Romulus is the 1st alien movie with no large group of random nameless characters since the original even if people don't like the 6/7 characters in Romy they're still all at least distinct and not Just there to die
I worked at TRF, the one featured in ren faire, and I also dated a girl who lived with the rennies in a community near the faire. Very cool time of my life, super interesting characters everywhere, loads of old hippies and weird perverts
Adam, please consider checking out the independent blu-ray label Deaf Crocodile. They bring a lot of extremely obscure films to a wider market in beautifully designed and inexpensive deluxe editions. They’ll be releasing Rock’n Roll Wolf soon, as well as other furry movies like Tamala 2010 and Felidae, and their curatorial sense makes blind buying their releases extremely fun. Would recommend literally every single film they’ve put out. I’d love to hear you talk about them.
iirc in universe facehuggers have an insane grip strength. honestly, if we were going by previous versions and expanded universe, the moment it got latched on to the first guys head it was over. in the expanded alien universe (i know) it'd be like trying to push against the bite force of a massive land animal like a polar bear or nile crocodile. as soon as it gets a clamp on your head its a wrap
Was curious to know Adam’s thoughts on I Saw the TV Glow. I watched it at a really late screening and enjoyed it for the most part, while not necessarily connecting with certain narrative and character choices in the moment, walking out of the theatre thinking “wtf just happened” especially those last 10 minutes. I felt cheated out of a real ending and when I puzzled together what it meant if all hit me like a ton of bricks and I had an existential crisis that night when I got home. Definitely a movie that I understood more as time drew from it, but I definitely understand the criticisms of it.
I scrubbed through the video timeline and didn't see "Mars Express". I assume that Adam didn't talk about it because he discusses it on the upcoming Sardonicast, unless I just missed it?
@@gibbstan96 doesn't need to be. shows and movies make references to albums and song names all the time. really nothing wrong with not spelling it out to the audience that it's a reference. unless you're 12 i guess
@@gibbstan96 references rarely have an explicit purpose lol it's really not unheard of but if adum's content is all you watch I can see how you'd feel that way
@@swag858 i don't actually. but you're not wrong otherwise. i think whether or not it bothers me depends on my investment in both of the things. i really didn't like the movie, because the two major things it's addressing (nostalgia tied to media, gender confusion) are both personal to me and I didn't like how it represented either. so the fact that it also had cocteau twins and broken social scene references just made me even more frustrated, because those are important to me as well. (the alex g score is awesome though)
17:22. This is actually one of my main issues with Aliens. There’s that scene with the sentry guns, and they’re just mowing down aliens. Just one alien in the previous movie was this nearly unstoppable force, and now we see (at least partially see) them being mowed down by the dozen, so long as you have a gun. They end up running out of ammo and overrunning them eventually. But it kinda ruined the perceived power of the Alien for me - if you have a gun, you’re fine. Just shoot it and it’ll die.
That's pretty much true to life. Bears were so terrifying for most of history people refused to name them for fear of drawing their attention. Now after firearms most people consider them large raccoons.
Yeah the playing field isn't even leveled when they bring a flamethrower they had to toss it out into space. But in fairness the characters in Aliens are Marines as opposed to the space truckers from Alien. And they still do get their asses kicked. Plus I recall the director of Alien saying they could've shot it but the acid blood would cause a hull breach
You’re completely right. Though I seem to remember only three people surviving in Aliens, despite everybody having guns, so… wtf are you talking about?
Is it that surprising that some space truckers struggles to kill an alien in a horror movie as opposed to the space marines in the action movie? Also in Aliens the marines are still fucked up by the end, not a lot of them survive. It's like watching a video of a whole weaponised team of hunters killing a shark and then saying "I can't be intimidated by Jaws anymore". Like you wouldn't be armed to the teeth when you find the xenomorph mate. Also, this is a line of sentry guns, literally what wouldn't die to that?
The alien in the first movie wasn't immune to guns/bullets, what a weird take that people keep repeating. This scene in particular was to show how intelligent the aliens, first trying to figure out how to bypass the guns and then just looking for a different way to get inside.
I'm surprised to see how polarizing this movie is. I really enjoyed the sets and the visuals of the movie but hated the characters, there was just nothing there for me. I also hated the recycling of lines from earlier movies. There was a lot to enjoy but I'm not watching this again. People in the theater behind me were laughing out loud at some scenes while the people in front of me talked about how scary they thought it was. You're still allowed to like a movie if others think it's bad btw.
Ummm the robots prime directive was to do whatever was the interest of her. It was of her interest to save the pregnant lady which the robot did not do, so yes, it does make sense for the mc to question the robots directive.
In that particular scene, the Xeno was about to kill them all. So saving the pregnant lady would cause Rain's death. Not sure that Rain's death is in her best interest. Also not sure how Android directives work. They might have a moral filter to not listen to humans if they are making irrational decisions, which Rain was doing when asking to open the door.
I felt Alien: Romulus was a vast improvement over Prometheus and Alien: Covenant (they have the dumbest characters of the whole series, even worse than AVP's, and the most awful attempts of rewriting the lore which just ends up giving BAD answers or leave more questions) but... it's too bad that it kind of turned out to be the Ghostbusters: Afterlife of the Alien series. Which to me it's not that great. I'm so tired of an Alien movie needing to have an obligatory post-climax confrontation, I heard that Fede talked bringing back you-know-who, but I wouldn't be surprised if that post-climax confrontation was studio-demanded because it was so tacked on (even Covenant did it and it felt just as forced there, on top of everything else wrong with it). Either way I'm European and nobody clapped in my theater so I don't agree that the moments they focus on the Xenomorph stuff felt like "crowd clapping" moments (watch The Force Awakens or Spider-Man No Way Home if you want to see what films with awkward pauses/staging meant to make room for audiences roaring feels like), to me it felt like the movie was just showing off the cool practical effects, while stuff like the "Get away from her you Bitch" and the deepfake of you-know-who was indeed very cringe. I didn't mind the characters, when they messed up I could at least understand why they messed up (and at least they're not scientists so it's not painful when they make rookie horror movie victim mistakes) so overall while I get why it disappointed some people, the detractors tend to over-exaggerate the negatives IMO. But who knows, I'll rewatch it at some point and see if I'll change my opinion. I enjoyed it for what it was, but it would've been better without all the memberberries and with a fresher ending. The sequel (Romulus was a box office success and it got generally decent reviews, IT WILL HAPPEN) will either be an improvement if they'll listen to the critiques, or it'll go completely off the rails like the new Halloween films after a passable soft reboot and then a hysterically violent and dumb sequel. For now I think I'll rank Romulus right below Alien 3 (a film that is flawed, but I think has enough beauty to balance things out), it'd be missing link in the point the Alien series goes from good/decent to sloppy in my tier list. But who knows, maybe on a rewatch it'll join the lesser level of Resurrection, AVP 1 and Prometheus. AVP Requiem and Covenant remain the bottom.
I don't know if I watched the same movie as the rest of you guys... I loved Romulus. "They wanted the audience to stand up and clap every time they revealed something"... so they should just coen brothers nonchalantly not dramatise any major moment or it's cringe? Yeah idk maybe I'm lower IQ for enjoying it but I'm very confused by the number of people saying it's mid or bad.
Why does the movie have to recycle ideas and dialogue? It pisses me off whenever it references the other Alien movies because they're wasting time by saying lines from better movies. I also didn't understand why the movie had to move so quickly, it seemed ADHD. Like how they understand what the facehuggers are doing immediately when the people in the first movie had to put it in an MRI machine to learn about it -- and then the aliens burst out of you a solid twelve seconds after you get impregnated. It was just kinda dumb in my opinion.
@@dennisscott1304 I don't really agree that it recycled ideas - they reincorporated past things but there was always a new thing that added to the universe rather than just showing it and expecting applause. We've never seen how an alien goes from chestburster to full-grown on screen before and now we've seen that sequence with the egg thing. We hadn't seen how facehuggers see you and they found a way to make a really cool scene out of that in a way that makes sense. We saw a perfectly clever and unique way for a really trusted character in Andy to change motivation and go from helper to secondary villain on a dime and have it make sense for the film. The blood in the antigravity hallway sequence - I feel like at every point they were trying to be creative or add to the series rather than just doing more of the same and the only real thing that directly feels like a rehash is having them in an enclosed space being picked off by a xenomorph but that's what people have been asking for since Prometheus so of course they did it. I don't know if it would have made the movie more enjoyable to watch having the asian girl walk around for 20 more minutes before being chestbursted or to have them start from absolutely point zero and go through the same learning about the facehuggers as the nostromo crew when the audience already knows all this stuff.
They reused a bunch of lines from previous films. They reused the most iconic line from the entire fucking franchise. They were constantly calling back to previous films in the way that some scenes were shot. While the zero g bit was a cool sequence it was done to add some Aliens-esque action with the pulse rifle, the ammo counter ticking down etc. The last girl trope. The "unexpected" threat after they escaped the xenos. The whole human-xeno hybrid thing was straight outta Resurrection and looked as ridiculous as the newborn in that film. They had some great ideas, especially pertaining to the lore of the universe, but that doesn't make it a good film. Andy was great and the way they used his character was super interesting but everyone else was super bland and one dimensional. Please don't let the problems I have with the film deter you from liking it. At the end of the day it's all subjective and art is interpreted through our own lens tinted by our past experiences. I'm glad a lot of people were able to enjoy an Alien film again but this one just didn't do it for me.
@@Yo-Ah-Kimwould complacency be better. We don’t expect hollywoods shit to be good, but we are free to call it what it is. Cynicism isn’t going to make anything change, but I don’t expect people to wake up and start voting with their wallet either…
The way you were describing the dye fantasy mv reminded me of one I just watched recently about some people in a swimming pool then i realized it was the same one, I also highly recommend it. I found it on the rym music video chart and there’s a lot of other cool ones on there as well.
Tbh I have the same sentiments as him. I wanted to like it but the lack of chemistry with the main characters and how the dialogue was delivered really turned me off…the ending was interesting thought.
1:57:50 I think you misinterpreted this donator’s message. It seems to me that they said “come on lol” in reference to their previous statement about Alvarez being a fan of the franchise and them not enjoying the fan service he put in.
Romulus was a safe movie, keeped reminded me of the first movie and how they did it better I did like the Set though very reminiscent of the first and second movie and the Aliens them selves where accurate to the original. Also yeah agree I did not give a shit about the cast at all Wish the Aliens would have won and left the Romulus a drift in space waiting for the next crew of victims.
Fucking loved Romulus, they executed what they should’ve done long ago with real old tech, not like the prequels did. While also leaving in an ending fresh to tell us that Prometheus is and should be the future. Amazing style and audio.
1st act: I would rather be watching Alien 1979 2nd act: I would rather be watching Aliens 3rd act: I would rather be watching Prometheus and Alien Covenant
@@1997residenteoh yeah Watch Prometheus and Covevant again so that you feel thankful that at least Romulus has characters that arent THAT moronic and that it doesn't try to rewrite the lore in the worst ways.
RLM mentioned it, but you can really tell that 20th century fox is a part of the disney conglomerate now, what with just how much this movie baits you with nostalgia. The movie was nothing but callbacks and reminders of the older movies, be that in the set, the plot, re-hashed lines, or that awful Ian Holm deepfake. It felt like it didnt have an original bone in its body past the twenty minute mark.
And it's so sad to see how people eat it up without thinking critically for even one second. The pandering is so blatantly obvious and cringe inducing, it takes me out of the movie every time
I know you been busy and i don't check in hardly ever but any update on Lion king part 2? Part 1 is one of my favorite RUclips videos ever. Im hoping to see your review of the second half of that ball of crap
he talked about his progress on the highlights channel when he reacted to the mufasa teaser im pretty sure (not the most recent one but the over 1h long one), but as far as i remember his priority is 2016 list and synechdoche part 6 rn, idk if im remembering correctly tho but hope this helps
*Spoilers for Romulus* Got super disappointed when Ash appeared. I was into it until it went back to "let's do alien 1 again... But in 2024. We *NEED* to get the nostalgia goggles old people in their 40s/50s to see our movie because disney said so". Then Björn (or whatever his name is) just made it so much worse to the point where I got happy he died first. It was a good alien movie through. I loved the set designs and characters (idk if the writers intended for Björn to be so absolutely hateable 10 - 15 minutes before he died through, but I'll take it if that's for the plot I guess)
I think Id rather watch Romulus over Covenant, but Romulus offends me more. Even with a lot of the movies in the alien franchise being kind of unoriginal past the first one, this one just goes out of its way to be as unoriginal as possible. Btw the whole "We're returning to practical effects" nonsense is always just for show. The force awakens hyped up "muh practical effects as well, but then you watch the movie and theres still TONS of CGI. And the practical effects thay are present arent that over the top impressive. Theyre nice. I'll take them. But it doesnt fix a bad script with lame characters.
Straight up that’s a good stand alone horror movie, let alone a faithful remake of a good horror movie. I can understand not liking it due to preference but why act like it’s terrible? People will hear him say that and assume it’s not worth watching when it totally is.
Fan service in an Alien movie doesn't make any sense. Isn't Alien 1979 an allegory of R*pe? This is not Ghostbusters or Star wars. The entire franchise is depressing as hell.
It had action figures. Kids love the rape monsters. I was one of those kids. Now when's the next AvP movie? I want to know how the Cherokee would handle a Xenomorph infestation.
Just saw “I saw The Glow” movie and I 100% agree with that you said. The atmosphere is great, I really loved the aesthetics of the fake show and the music. But the main characters are so boring, the acting is weird and the girls pauses drove me crazy. I was almost giving up but I kept going to see if something else happened haha 😅 and then when something kinda cool happened and it just ended. I get the messaging was trying to portray but the execution was kinda eh. Also the marketing was really misleading 🤔 at times it felt kinda pretentious as well - happy a lot of people enjoyed it though
My takeaway from Adam's and RLM's review is, that Alien: Romulus is very clearly made for fanboys and -girls. To me it was a solid 6/10 movie, although the nostalgia-bait bothered the fuck out of me. But as a huge Alien-nerd, who played the games and read the comics and is just generally invested in the universe, it did what I expected. If people hate it, so be it, if they love it, so be it. It was pretty flawed, but I wasn't bored or completley annoyed watching it. Also, I don't reguarly watch big blockbuster Disney products (which the majority of RUclips reviewers have to I guess), so maybe I'm not that burned out on the formular
@@52BLUE What is a fanboy? No idea. The worst Alien movie is AvP2. Every other movie in the franchise has at least something interesting on offer, imo.
I Saw The TV Glow is dysphoria the movie, I don't think you can connect with it as well if you're not trans. I had tears running three times throughout the movie.
Never saw this movie. I was planning on going to see it until I saw the final trailer. Looked like shit to me, but people are so divided on this and it’s making the movie seem more intriguing to me.
yeah I just saw it and initially had such low expectations of it. When I heard the reactions with some calling it really weird at the end it peeked my interest. Having seen it really isn't interesting in the slightest. It's so adequate and a massive pastiche of much better parts of all the other Alien movies. It feels like a streaming movie made to fill 2 hours of time.
Watch it. Make your opinion on it. Even in the worst scenario, it’s not going to be a movie that doesn’t at the bare minimum entertain. But it’s bad bad bad fanservice wrapped by some neat cinematography. Unlike Adam though, I found a few scenes genuinely creepy. Aside from that, you watch it, you forget it after a week
Well I was scammed by listening to peoples thoughts and having faith cause I feel like I wasted my time…. I’d say see it, and take it as you will for yourself. It was pretty bad. You might get some enjoyment out of the aliens or scenery or something.
What is so upsetting to me about Romulus is I thought we really started moving past the member berries shit working. I thought people had stopped caring about that, but it seems like the mindset of “I was able to remember this from an old movie, and I recognized this this and this, and that made me feel smart and good and that means movie good.” Is still alive and well. Also feels like more of a sheeple issue where the overall reaction to it has been “it’s really amazing” so everyone just says “oh yeah yeah, it’s really good” instead of have their own opinion. I genuinely think that if the overall discourse was negative it would not be doing nearly as well.
The 'member berries' thing is currently wheeled out whenever there's the slightest reference between films, regardless of how its done. It's use as a criticism has become lazy, and often applied incorrectly. If you're going to make a film as part of a series, good luck not making any call backs or connections, and if that's the goal, just make a different film. Little things like the Reeboks have been dropped into films for decades, and if that sort of thing winds somebody up, film might not be for them. 😅 The "Get away from her" line was 100% cringe, did not work in the context of the film, would not be missed, and can easily be slapped with the member berry tag. However, the vast majority of the callbacks did work in the context of the film, didn't take people out of it (apart from those choosing to get annoyed by them), and the film would be less connected to the series without them.
@@kumatoni5245 Yea that line and the constant need to go back to Rook was the only thing I thought was too much. I didn't get to see Alien or Aliens in theaters, I like that they went back to the roots of the series. Movie was just incredibly fun, but it's the type of series that has waaaay to hardcore of fanbase to make a universally loved movie.
Adam :) I know it's the wrong channel for this, but you enjoyed Life Is Tumblr. From the same people there's more cringe out. At least two of them worked on life is strange. Now the political psy op that is Dustborn:'D
Romulus just had clunky writing and really bad characters. I don't know why modern horror writers keep putting stupid teenagers in their horror films where there's supposed to be tension. The reason why the original Alien and The Thing (1982) or even Event Horizon worked for example, is because they had compelling, COMPETENT characters. Not only did you care about them because they were likeable, but since they were clearly competent it was a legitimate shock when someone died. Like "wow even this guy gets killed, how is anyone going to get out of this alive?". It raises the tension and stakes and it also makes the villain (monster) look more intimidating and intelligent. Whereas in Romulus they just introduce these dumbass teenager characters with no personality or charisma. I didn't care for any of them and felt no tension when there was apparent danger. Also since these stupid clumsy characters somehow need to live a big portion of the runtime, that means the Alien has to be a dumbass as well so as to not just kill them right away, or there has to be a lot of convenience in the writing. Just typical modern clunky writing mistakes.
Most of the characters in Alien are cardboard cutouts. I think Ripley, Parker, and Ash are the only ones I gave a shit about. Dallas is embarrassing as a written and acted character, dude looked like he took an Ambien and is about to fall asleep.
I absolutely agree with what you said. I think that was the biggest problem for me. The characters. Hell, I’m 19, and I could already tell it was going to be unlikable teenagers and it made me disappointed because… why? Why do that? Why do you think they’d be likable? Why would I want such soulless characters or stupid teenagers? I want older characters, or at least ones with genuine character to them. I don’t mind anyone older either though. I want characters like the first Alien. Especially dialogue. The dialogue in Romulus was… not too great. Felt empty. Some other problems with it too, I don’t even know. But the cursing annoyed me. I felt like they said fuck way too many times than needed, it felt forced? All of it just didn’t feel like a story. Like movies that usually suck you into them, into their world, and feelings etc. can’t take much from it.
1:25:02 oh it's mostly russian the biggest leads are pop stars (as in singers) never saw it full but seeing scenes of it on tv always made me uncomfortable from the combination of childish sappiness and a kids movie and socially unacceptable weirdness. they adapted a simple fairy tale wolf and 7 goats into that musical and it became ruined by the time i was born due to invasive western culture and their fetishes
1:25:26 goats wolf and 7 goats fairy tale mum says stranger danger don't open the door, you can recognize me with my high female voice wolf comes, sings the password and they laugh at him with his male low raspy voice wolf goes to a blacksmith and orders silver tongue he returns to the goats imitates their mum and eats all depending on the parents they add hunters who split the wolf in half to get the goats out the weird part in this adaptation wolf has own kids to feed, overcomplicating fairy tales makes them weird and morally uncomfortable
As a person who's never seen Alien but then watched it after Romulus, I think everyone's just blinded by nostalgia goggles. If Alien had come out today, they'd be definitely be criticising the stupidity of the characters except Ripley, all the anti-woke people would be calling it woke because somehow Ripley is the only sane one there. The whole Alien movie only happens because they're fucking stupid enough to bring the guy on board (before the robot even knows about it) and then somehow bring the guy back out for food who does not feel ANYTHING despite the fucking thing bursting out of him like minutes later? Not to mention the end when Ripley does like rounds of the ship only to get blocked and then not blocked and then not suspicious at all that the alien might have entered into the escape pod? C'mon, who hasn't fought roaches or spiders only for it to disappear and then just "eh it's fine", no way that happens
I just think everyone going into their pods, and a sting at the end of the pregnant lady mutating would have been better than yet another action scene with an Alien. Maybe if there wasn't so much action I'd feel less burnout
Wasn't Ash being an android a shock to the crew? They didn't know he was a machine, so why are they establishing that he's a mass produced model? Not really a fan of the whole concept of the androids having a set appearance by model, really.
I don't get why Adam hates the humor in Sausage Party because doesn't he make vulgar jokes all the time? I don't understand the difference, and it seems like he would've liked it.
I like standup comedy, but I would not like a movie that's just people doing improv. Just like Adam probably doesn't think lazy, easy jokes you make with your friends are funny when you put them in a full lenght movie.
I liked Alien: Romulus. Did I have some issues with it yeah but I much prefer legacy sequels that we have now days that the awful sequels we used to have in the late 90s early 2000s like Alien Resurrection which just came across as "This ain't your daddy's Alien. This is the new hip Alien for the modern crowd." Also in no way do I think it's worse than Covenant because why I hated Covenant was due to all of the laughably bad cringe parts. I don't want to watch and Alien movie to laugh and cringe at it. My big issue was why did they have to make a CGI Ian Holm when the character is not the same character from the first Alien movie.
I walked out of Alien lol people clapping in the theatre just pissed me off even more, it was really bad. ppl really fell for the fan service not the actual movie
Disney did a great job marketing this Alien film to people who are too young to even give a shit about the original Alien and its sequel. I couldn't believe the amount of positive press this got after getting home from the cinema. Did they send out cheques or something? It's almost as if all the producers studied marketing instead of film making.
I was too young to see Alien & Aliens, I was born 2005, I’m 19. I’ve always loved Sci-Fi since I was a little girl, at like age 4. My favorite show being Doctor Who ever since then. And i always planned to watch certain movies including the first two Alien movies but never did just cause I’m lazy and get too comfortable watching the same thing over and over again and whatnot, I don’t know. So I didn’t watch those movies until just this June, and I was blown away (especially by Aliens, it’s become my favorite movie, and Ripley is someone I absolutely fucking admire, and god I love practical effects, always have) I enjoyed them immensely. I went to the theater today with my dad to see Romulus. I heard good things, I had hope. And then I heard mixed things, so I was a bit skeptical but still had faith. I liked what I saw from the trailers, I thought there would be something to it, that they figured out what made Alien work. So I expected the movie to be decent and somewhat enjoyable. Not the greatest, but not terrible. And god it was bad… I envy people who were alive at the time and got to see the first two movies… It’s really a lot of bad stuff these days. Especially with Sci-Fi because that’s really hard for people to get right apparently. Not an easy genre. But yeah the movie left me… regretting seeing it.
I actually tried asking ChatGPT to make an alien sequel. It somehow had more original ideas than Romulus. And by original I mean it reused plot points of previous movies in a more nuanced way. The absolute state of Disney
ey as a guy who's only seen alien and then the newer 3 movies, i really liked romulus way more than the other 2 spin offs, even tho all of them are more bad than good i guess. alien romulus is just absolutely fucking gorgeous, and ofcourse cams have gotten better but just the cinematography itself i really enjoyed too, i was stunned by everything except that fkn thing at the end. they portrayed space beautifully i think
57:52 Regarding your review of I Saw The TV glow, it doesn't contain mumblecore acting. That's not what mumblecore is. This type of acting is intensely affected. Justice Smith wasn't great, but holy shit, the girl was far worse. That's not even debatable to me.
It's only my second Alien movie and I thought it was fine, I might just like looking at scifi environments and mechanisms...music wasn't good, other elements were fine I guess
I feel like everyone’s watching Romulus the wrong way. It’s clearly a comedy. You’re supposed to watch this movie with Andy being an iPhone or a more advanced Siri.
I will never understand the blind praise im hearing for Romulus. Everyone is praising Romulus for exact same issues that they constantly trash Prometheus and Covenant. The characters are flat and forgettable. The writing for them is nonexistent most of the time. The acting is completely dispassionate... or talentless, however you want to look at it. I can remember Ripley, Newt, Hicks, Dallas, Parker, Hudson, Vasquez and even Drake. I can even remember 85, Clemens and Morris and i freaking LOATHE Alien 3. I can remember Call, Johner, David, Shaw, Daniels, Vickers and Tennessee. I cant remember any of the s*** characters in Romulus. The fan service is completely inappropriate for a serious Alien film. Not even Resurrection stooped so low as to directly quote better, better movies in the franchise. As a fan, the "Get away from her you b****" line was completely insulting. How or why would they try to cheapen Ripleys glorious moment in Aliens?? This is how i rank the franchise: Aliens Alien Prometheus Alien Covenant Alien Resurrection AVP Alien Romulus Alien 3 AVP: Requiem
For the most part, I had a great time with Romulus. These things are very subjective, becuase I thought it did several things better than similar things other films attempted. As for the original film's characters, I've seen it countless times and adore it, but aside from Ripley and Ash, the others are mostly bland, generic redshirts. Once gone, instantly forgotten. Very muich not memorable. 😅 Aliens is far better as giving the crew personality, but the first one, no. Not even close.
17:41 "Probably" Certainly not. It's kinda funny when people who have no clue what they're talking about are just trying to find reasons to be angry or prove how smart they are. You kinda at least had a hunch you were wrong though, so good job.
He’s literally struggling to consistently apply his critique at 19:17. The cohost steps in after he’s caught meandering and they swiftly change the topic. A moment before, he complains about weak setup and weak pay off - “split second of showcasing, no narrative simmering, and weak visual payoff” Which can’t be applied to the acid hallway. They don’t touch the purge mechanic after its setup, it looked great, and it sets other stakes up. So he struggles and finds himself on an extra third thing. And hey, which is okay! I have some issues with how the elevator scene goes down (pun) but, the mechanic itself was setup well, and his criticism doesn’t apply. It must be exhausting constantly maintaining this level of cynicism. I wouldn’t apply this aphorism to someone’s character after one interaction, it’s my first YMS video, but it applies to too many RUclips movie reviewers - Raw cynicism is pseudo-intellectualism’s favorite garb.
I’ve always said this and I will keep saying it: “I Saw The Tv Glow” is about the trans experience and growing up as a trans kid. You could also argue that it’s being on the spectrum. If you didn’t like the movie, then you clearly couldn’t relate to it and the movie just wasn’t for you. 🤷🏿♂️
@@SpiderNightcrawlerI get that. But like I said before, this film is clearly about a VERY SPECIFIC experience. So obviously, not most people aren’t gonna connect to it. I just think it’s kinda weird that Adam would critique a movie that clearly wasn’t made for him.
This is a weird take ngl. Why gatekeep the experience of a film and act as though the only possible explanation for someone not connecting with it is that someone "couldn't relate to it"? I am asking this as an autistic person who doesn't connect with the material of the film either.
Tbh didnt get the fan service trope from this movie mostly because these things that you would deem 'fan services' are relevant to the plot of all alien movies. Instead of a 'oh look' moment
The fan services in the movie were directed to the real fans of alien lore and the series through easter eggs throught the movie that a regular movie goer would not notice or care

I feel like it would have been 100x more interesting if Rain had actually died during the elevator scene, and Andy survived. Not only would it be an interesting premise of what a synthetic does after its directive is failed/gone but it would be a break in the trope of final girl. I was so disappointed.
I was just happy Cailee spaeney lived cause I saw some review that said I liked that they all died before I saw it
What annoys me about the cgi deepfake is that it could have easily been replaced by anything else and it would have had the same impact on the story. Hell, I would have preferred a Working Joe considering the fact that this film’s production design already looks very similar to Alien Isolation.
The funny thing is it wasn’t CGI. It was a puppet.
Maybe my opinion will change after a while or after a rewatch, but for now I had a blast watching it.
no one ever mentions that Romulus is the 1st alien movie with no large group of random nameless characters since the original
even if people don't like the 6/7 characters in Romy they're still all at least distinct and not Just there to die
I loved Romulus, I cannot fathom how someone could like Covenant more 😭

Really enjoy this format - helped me through my shift

It was weird that the main character was mad at the android for acting differently when she was the one who literally swapped out his robot soul
She didn't swap it out though? She added the credentials to his brain, the circle thing just got added, there wasn't any swap
It was an augment chip not swapping his os. Nobody knew it woud override his base programming. They are stupid kids figuring it out as they go along
Not only is the video for DyE - Fantasy amazing, the song is also DOPE. I have been rocking it for over a decade now.
Yeah they seem really great but unfortunately I live in Australia and don’t have a region A blu ray player.
iirc in universe facehuggers have an insane grip strength. honestly, if we were going by previous versions and expanded universe, the moment it got latched on to the first guys head it was over.
in the expanded alien universe (i know) it'd be like trying to push against the bite force of a massive land animal like a polar bear or nile crocodile. as soon as it gets a clamp on your head its a wrap
I missed the stream. Oh, well. There's always next one.
I will catch up on it now.
I scrubbed through the video timeline and didn't see "Mars Express". I assume that Adam didn't talk about it because he discusses it on the upcoming Sardonicast, unless I just missed it?

@@SkateWeeb. I liked it as a spectical film, but yeah that characters kinda sucked

I figured he wouldn’t like alien lol but it’s fine I still love the movie and kinda love yms still lol
I enjoyed it too. It's fine if others didn't tho, doesn't take anything away from me.

The bar is set so low now that even mediocrity is celebrated. Sad times.
Hear me out, maybe people just liked the movie, wild idea.
The "Get away from her" line was 100% cringe, did not work in the context of the film, would not be missed, and can easily be slapped with the member berry tag.
Nah, Event Horizon had some stupid moments too and the black dude was super annoying and unfitting.

1:25:02 oh it's mostly russian the biggest leads are pop stars (as in singers)
never saw it full but seeing scenes of it on tv always made me uncomfortable from the combination of childish sappiness and a kids movie and socially unacceptable weirdness. they adapted a simple fairy tale wolf and 7 goats into that musical and it became ruined by the time i was born due to invasive western culture and their fetishes
1:25:26 goats
wolf and 7 goats fairy tale
mum says stranger danger don't open the door, you can recognize me with my high female voice
wolf comes, sings the password and they laugh at him with his male low raspy voice
wolf goes to a blacksmith and orders silver tongue
he returns to the goats imitates their mum and eats all
depending on the parents they add hunters who split the wolf in half to get the goats out
the weird part in this adaptation wolf has own kids to feed, overcomplicating fairy tales makes them weird and morally uncomfortable

The human characters could’ve been so much better. The actors were good they were just killed too early and didn’t get a chance to grow

31:05 oh no they did not oh no they did not
If they cut the movie by half an hour (especially the unnecessary ending fight) it would have been better.
I thought that was one of the best parts, definitely the most unsettling
what are you talking about the ending was amazing easily the best part of the movie
I just think everyone going into their pods, and a sting at the end of the pregnant lady mutating would have been better than yet another action scene with an Alien. Maybe if there wasn't so much action I'd feel less burnout
@@jamesmeow3039 I get it if you thought the movie was too long, but you could just suggest a different part to cut.
@@K-tw4wb perhaps.
Less Romulus more Remus.

This is the new hip Alien for the modern crowd."
Also in no way do I think it's worse than Covenant because why I hated Covenant was due to all of the laughably bad cringe parts.
Seals and sheep mate. That’s who this dross appeals to.

Disney did a great job marketing this Alien film to people who are too young to even give a shit about the original Alien and its sequel. I couldn't believe the amount of positive press this got after getting home from the cinema. Did they send out cheques or something? It's almost as if all the producers studied marketing instead of film making.
Lmfao I went into the movie blind as fuck and loved it so idk man maybe you just didn’t like it. It doesn’t need to be some big conspiracy.
@@iivvrryy every single old school franchise Disney has touched has turned to shit. This will be no different.

I saw this movie at the drive in theatre with my brother and had a great time. I thought this movie was the best Alien film we've got since Aliens
Im just starting to realize, Romulus is the most “written by ai” movie I’ve ever seen.
What was bad about the girl?
Been waiting for the torrent for months. Watched 15min and turned it off. Why is the cast cringy genz kids.
I watched Romulus with two people whop hadnt seen any of the others, they thought it was great. Maybe quaity is subjective???
This is how i rank the franchise:
Aliens
Alien
Prometheus
Alien Covenant
Alien Resurrection
AVP
Alien Romulus
Alien 3
AVP: Requiem
What a lame movie, make something new please. The robot was cool, thats about it.
17:41 "Probably"
Certainly not. It's kinda funny when people who have no clue what they're talking about are just trying to find reasons to be angry or prove how smart they are. You kinda at least had a hunch you were wrong though, so good job.
I see what you mean now. With gravity present the bullet would fall to the floor normally and not go through the hull.
He’s literally struggling to consistently apply his critique at 19:17. The cohost steps in after he’s caught meandering and they swiftly change the topic.
A moment before, he complains about weak setup and weak pay off - “split second of showcasing, no narrative simmering, and weak visual payoff”
Which can’t be applied to the acid hallway.
That's most movies. "If you didn't like it then clearly it wasn't made for you" can literally be applied to like every movie lol
@@SpiderNightcrawlerI get that. But like I said before, this film is clearly about a VERY SPECIFIC experience. So obviously, not most people aren’t gonna connect to it. I just think it’s kinda weird that Adam would critique a movie that clearly wasn’t made for him.
@@SpiderNightcrawleror I should say: It’s rather pointless to critique a film that wasn’t made for you.
This is a weird take ngl. Why gatekeep the experience of a film and act as though the only possible explanation for someone not connecting with it is that someone "couldn't relate to it"? I am asking this as an autistic person who doesn't connect with the material of the film either.
@@samuelsmoak2541he's critiquing it because people ASKED him to, which he literally said when he started talking about it. Hope this helps!
I just got back from watching Romulus and it was bad…. And I had faith too, I didn’t think it’d be super good, but at least respectable and decent. But oh my god it just sucks…. When I saw your review, I thought you were just being a bit harsh but I see why now… I’d give it a bit lower..
Romulus was almost as good as Rogue One, if you're into that sort of thing. Please try to be more charitable, even if cynicism is your shtick.
Why can't i see this video when i click on your channel and home or video's. Had to search you up and saw this
