"This is the film equivalent of sewing a bunch of dead bodies together and passing it off as a living human being."
Has anyone pointed out yet that the black and white CG Superman cameo is George Reeves, who many believe committed suicide because he couldn't find a successful role outside of Superman and eventually began to resent the character? It was either that or murder and, either way, he has no living relatives or an estate that could sign off on this cameo in a movie released on the 64th anniversary of his death.

One of them was done by Grant Morrison - ya know, the guy who wrote All Star Superman, considered to be one of the best comic book writers in the industry and author of the best Superman comic ever. • @Redbird-dh7mu
      @Redbird-dh7mu 10 месяцев назад +51

I think the worst part is that Barry 1 gave up so fucking quickly when he didn’t have to.
In Flashpoint, which also features a plot where the Flash saving his mother causes major differences in the timelines, the reason why Barry can’t just go back in time and keep on resetting is because, as a character put it, “Break the sound barrier, make a sonic boom. Break the time barrier, make a time boom”, which basically means that a lot of points in history have changed slightly that eventually goes so out of control that there are massive differences. Superman doesn’t land in the same place, Bruce dies instead of his parents, and so on.
This means that Barry can’t just keep going back and changing the timeline to get his perfect timeline. Meanwhile, in this movies no such rule is ever established and there isn’t an in character reason for him to just not keep on trying instead of standing there and doing nothing while Barry 2 does his thing.
Like, the Flash should never just give up like that. These are still people and have lives. Flashpoint basically forced Barry into letting his mother die because it was that or everyone dies.
Meanwhile, this Barry is like, “Damn, I failed twice, I have to let my mom die now I guess.”

Flash just ditches his original timeline and all of the people in it. Their flash is gone, never to return, and he wont be there to help save them from future catastropies. Flashes original mom is still dead too. He just became a squatter in a universe where another version of her is still alive. For me, stuff like power inconsistency in superhero movies falls under a category I call "grey life damage." It's a term from Street Fighter, where certain moves will cause a portion of your health bar to turn grey rather than just disappear. The grey life will slowly come back over time, so if you successfully defend yourself for a bit, it won't matter. But if you take any other damage during that time, the grey life vanishes all at once in addition to whatever normal damage you would take, and you're _way_ worse off.
In other words, "grey life damage" is mistakes that _do not matter_ if the rest of the movie is good. But if the rest of the movie is bad, they are yet another thing to get annoyed by, just as real as all the other annoyances. And fuck me, does this movie have a lot of shit to get annoyed at.

I mean, sure, sure. Kryptonians are strong. But evil flash is literally covered in anti-Kryptonian material which disables them. And even if he wasn't, HE'S THE FLASH. They're still 1% as fast as he is. He can literally kill them all in a fraction of a second. AND THERE'S 2 OF HIM TOO.

Not really. They translated the nonsense. Flashpoint effectively said much the same. "When you break the sound barrier, you create a sonic boom. When you break the time barrier, you create a time boom." That was Eobard's description in Flashpoint about how Barry altered the past before his mother's death. It still didn't make any sense. A sonic boom doesn't create a reality fissure. A "time boom" just sounds like utter garbage.
The issue is, as Adum says, Flash is a broken character because the comic writers just pursued the idea that he could run through time. He's no longer an actual speedster, he's just a nonsense chronokinetic who can do whatever the writers want, even if the writers don't know how to make use of him.
Flashpoint was just a novelty act for DC to reboot the world yet again, before going on to reboot it 2 or 3 more times by now. People only liked it because it gave effectively an alternate version of Earth 3, except Thomas Wayne is still a mostly good Batman compared to Owlman being an evil Batman. It really wasn't a good story. Personally, I'd say the last solid story DC did was Blackest Night.

What’s next GL can’t have his ring and lantern be the source of his powers, or Hulk can’t have gamma radiation be the source of his powers, or Wolverine can’t have his mutant x gene be the source of his powers? It’s a stupid and dumb thing to get upset about because to them that’s not a reason. In the comics Barry rarely runs into the speed force to time travel since he had a cosmic treadmill he made to take his speed so he can run through time easily. Since he couldn’t do it whenever he wanted at first and the cosmic treadmill was his easy access to reach the speed enough to go into the speed force. And like in the comics he did it accidentally once in the movie and before in the JL movie which is constant with how speedster find out they can time travel if they aren’t learning from another speedster. Even in the DCEU his powers was constant, the only thing that wasn’t was he time travel standing still which was stupid and I’m glad they didn’t bring it back. But the time travel way in the Flash movie should’ve been erased and just had him running instead of standing still or having that sphere.

Its really disappointing how badly the DC cinematic universe has portrayed The Flash. Most people I know LOVE The Flash as portrayed in the comics and in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon. He has a surprising amount of emotional maturity for a character who often is put into the comic relief role. That emotional maturity is what I think most people like about him. Most other heroes when you ask what makes them the best, people will think of just, examples of them being really powerful or clever.
For the Flash though, common moments people remember about him are things like... Chasing a dimension hopping supervillain to the end of the universe... To get a child's lollypop back. Learning construction at super speed to rebuild an apartment that had caught on fire so that the people who lived there wouldn't become homeless. Talking a super villain into getting back on his meds and promising to visit him at the hospital to hang out if he turns himself in.
There was one story where a villain mentions The Flash is the worst hero to fight, because most will just beat you up and drop you off at a jail. Flash will TALK to you and make you feel bad about not doing something better with your life. Ezra does not convey that at all. Ezra would be someone the Flash would have to have a talk with.

Funny thing, that's Wally West in Justice League(2001) and unlimited (2003) Don't get me wrong Wally's an absolutely great character, and to be honest he should get so much more screen time than Barry Allen. Villains actually talk about how much more they like Wally over Barry Allen who they described as a stick in the mud.
What happened was when DC was writing Justice League they decided to just give Wally West Barry Allen's backstory instead, since Wally is just so much more charismatic especially for an all audiences kids show.
The Justice League(2001)'s Flash is the kind of guy who'd go out of his way to run to Japan just to get a Christmas present to kids at a group home. Then when the toy's broken in a fight, he didn't care if he was killed, the thought of disappointing the kids mattered more to him. He unintentionally appealed to the morality of the guy he was fighting against, and they rebuilt the toy for the kids together.

Either way, Wally or Barry both versions of the flash have emphasis on their humanity and empathy. That's the main pillars of their characters. It's why as soon as I heard this film would be flashpoint, I stopped giving a shit, because flashpoint is a gritty, edgy, fun house world comic first and a flash exploration second.
Barry is canonically loved by Central City because of the work he does. He remembers the names of the cops he talks to and the citizens he saves. He talks to his villains and tries to help people above everything else. That's why he's such a success.
Snyder verse has a long, ugly trend of missing what heroes are about. Superman's struggle isn't being a god among humans, it's being a human with the powers of a god that he has to actively hold back at all times. Batman doesn't fucking kill people, he protects everyone; even when they deserve death, he spares them, because he never wants to cause someone the same grief that crippled him. This film is garbage and I cannot thank Adam enough for watching it so I don't have to

I cannot thank the Justice League and JLU cartoons enough for giving me my favorite hero.
I just wish other pieces of DC media would take Wally into consideration, pasting his traits onto Barry instead, and why I feel he isn't really written well in the comics anymore. Yes, I'm talking about Identity Crisis and how he killed people. I cannot remember the specific reason why, all I remember is that it rubbed me the wrong way.

It's funny cuz the original comic this movie was based on, The Flashpoint Paradox, has a much simpler and easier to understand time travel logic.
It's one timeline, Flash saves his mom and wakes up in modern day in the new timeline he created. But everything is fucked with Aquaman and Wonder Woman being villains and going to war, Batman being Bruce's father instead, and Superman being kidnapped by the government when he arrived on Earth. The reason all of these changes happened was because in the same way breaking the sound barrier creates a sonic boom, breaking the time barrier (LOL) creates a "time boom" which distorts events in the timeline just a tad but enough to create drastic changes.
By the end of the story, the world is basically being nuked and now Flash has to stop himself from saving his mom because by preventing his mom's salvation he prevents this fucked up future from happening and saves the world. Also, the reason he doesn't have powers in the original story isn't because he "undid it", but because in the new timeline he never got powers.
Are there still logical holes in the time travel logic? Sure, but compared to the amount in this movie it's not even close. How do you fuck up something literally pre-written for you?

I thought I couldn't stop laughing after that repetative "Flash fumbling his fingers into Batman's suit", and then he has this fantastic punchline

This review was dripping old school YMS review energy and I was living (while Barry’s mom was dying). Rare to get a fully edited breakdown YMS review these days! Time to go rewatch the Amusement and Frozen reviews

Did you know Actors had to actually jeopardize their entire career by actually traveling through time when filming?

This is the movie that made me realize how goddamn sick of multiverses I am now. At this point they're just exhausting to follow and so overdone. My eyes rolled so hard when the universes started colliding or whatever. I am begging for just a normal superhero movie with no time travel, no multiverse, and no tongue in cheek references to other franchises.

"no tongue in cheek references to other franchises" ?!
But that's what superhero movies are for.

Or, if you’re at least GOING to do multiverse stories or stories that have elements of the multiverse, make them compelling. Everything Everywhere All At Once was a fantastic multiverse story because it used the multiverse as a vehicle to explore characters, enhance the plot, and enhance the humour. The Spider-Verse movies also work because they use the multiverse to contrast between different heroes and challenge pre-conceived Spider-Man tropes.
The MCU and DCCU movies that use the multiverse or have multiverse elements in them don’t work as well because they mostly use them as either window dressing (Multiverse of Madness, GotG3) or fanservice (No Way Home, The Flash, and also MoM in a way).
But otherwise yeah, I would love a normal superhero movie with none of the multiversal bells and whistles.

It's an inherently nihilistic and illogical concept that only works when it's not being taken *too* seriously (like Everything Everywhere All At Once or the Spider-Verse movies) or just done for laughs (like Rick & Morty).

When Endgame was coming up I remember talking to my friend about how much it was going to absolutely ruin Marvel. Which is a film franchise I was already not very fond of. As soon as you bring in Multiverses, nothing can really matter, and plot conveniences can happen because Multiverses.
