- Unlike Earth, where all humans are of the same species, there are many human species in Kaimere, and in some places like the hinterland ring towns, these peoples cohabitate. Kaimerans do not reach adulthood until their eighties, which is the lifespan of most other humans, and has lead to these shared settlements tending to identify growth stages rather than age.
Songs of the Inland Sea is the sequel to Tales of Kaimere! It is a nautical anthology, with all six short stories and novellas taking place in aquatic settings. There are heists on a ship, a desperate chase through a marsh, and a survival story from the perspective of a killer whale!

I'm really glad you acknowledged that all humans of Earth are the same species, as that is a fact I wish more understood in depth, as it makes the concept of human races on Earth irrelevant, compared to the many varieties of people in Kaimere. We are all one race, yet we still treat each other differently based on color, gender, country/place of origin, authority level, and even our names. It's kind of unfortunate. I have seven races in my fantasy world including humans and they all get along well.
Yes indeed! I really wanted to drive home (and will do again whenever I get around to the human species in Kaimere episodes) that not only are humans of Earth the same species, we're the same subspecies and share a very close common ancestor. Peoples of kaimere are far more ancient and diverse, largely due to the challenges and dangers of maritime travel.
This fact that every living humans currently are the same species, homo sapiens, is acknowledged and reconized offically since a very, very long time.
However, it's reconized that there a lot of differents populations inside it that made aparts from each others, but only but genetic slighty minors traits impacting the surface of the body and not the interior and not impacting the intellectual and physical capacities and abilities of the targeted people.
Every human, whatever caucassian/white, black, asiatic (never say yellow for them) or others, have the same intelligence and can do the same things.
Our species having only less than 1 millions years ago of age/existence (almsot 0.300 kya precisely), she's too young to have at this stage subspecies yet. And the huge interbredding/miscegenation between each populations currently delayed this event.
Will not be before a long time before subspecies will arrived.
However, the concept of human races isn't irrelevant. In many points if we are objective.
A "Race", also called a "Breed", is a domestic form of an animal that have obtains under artifical condiions and living in a human-made habitat traits, eithers physically or in term of behaviors, either volontary by humans or unvolontary that made it apart from his wild form.
But a domestic form isn't a apart species or neither a subspecies.
It's a population of the species, but with only minors traits that only impact the physical or mental surface of an animal (his skin, coat, form of legs, horns, etc.).
Considering that most human live in a highly artificial habitat (aka our highly technological-advanced cities, twons, villages) and no more in the wild under the pressure of natural dangers, with several anatomical traits altered enough overtime since we became sedentary at 160,000-60,000 years ago (such the reductio size of the jaws since cooking warm food malkes useless poweerfull jaws to chew the food, as most popular and known example), the term is, it's the case to said, pretty valid at 100%. And can be apply without problem because facts are facts and cannot be denied.
For example, I'm myself a white/caucasian human, and if I was asked something about my kind, I will said, in my pure opinion, that every white/caucassian humans in the world are domestic, because living in a artificial environnent or descended from people that lived in an artificial environnent and inherited the altered traits as an effect, and as an effect, the White/Caucassian people can be regarded as a Race/Breed of our species. Neither a subspecies or distinct species.
(of course, it's just a personnal view of my own kind.)
But most don't mean all, and only populations with most of his members living in an enough artifical level habitat (like the one of a normal french small village in campaign is already sufficient as articifial habitat) can be considered as domestic, and as an effect, a race.
It cannot be only apply on the people that live in more primitive/basic habitats, such the tribes of people in South America or Africa in the middle of the jungle/Amazon and savannah recpectively.
Because living completely like their ancestors lived and haven't changed at all, they obtain any additional or altered traits, untouched, and are and still wild humans, the wild form of our species because they live outside and facing with resilience the nature elements.
And when I said wild, it's in the good tem, not at all as savages or cannibals that atack and eat every others human at sight of course (prefer to precise this point. Was a huge misconception gived by white settlers).
We cannot also determined humans races based on their physical appearance because all physical traits in every kind humans, such black skin in black people, white skin with blond, brown or red hairs in Caucassian/white people, or slant/brided eyes for asians people, are all natural traits that appeared naturally overtime, and not under artificial conditions/habitat.
We also must take into account that in every kind of humans, there a lot of varieties and diversity.
In the kind of the African black people (because not black poeple on earth come from Africa, many black population descend from light skinned people that became again black overtime), there a lot of "sub-kinds" with population with more lighter dark skin, others with a more darker black skin, and some with a size difference (most notable the Pygmies in Central Africa).
Overall, while it's complicated to clasifiate humans and his differents form under proper denominations, because labelling and classifiate everything in order that everything look comprehenive good, and tidied up is a universal and unalterable natural behavior of our species as a whole, this latter aspect and the concepts of races/breeds and subspecies in humans and our species isn't a bad an polemical subject despite most people can think at first glance when hearing them.
Science as a whole, and all his concepts and their definition, is just a domain mean to study, understand and after that educate and transcribe the infos to the rest of the public.
It's the uses that what some people in this latter, for their own advantages and selfishness, who can be bad and polemical.
For subspecies and races/breeds concepts on humans, it's only bad if you uses these concept as stupid and lazy quick and undevelopped excuses to said that you and your own kind are superior to all the others human kinds, thus the targeted differences take as arguments to support your words only affect minors and surfaces level things of the humans body of each kinds, and don't affect their intelectual and physical abilities who are equal between every human kinds becuase the interior and deep level is untouched by these same traits.
In addition, at our species' intellectual and conscience point/level, we no more established the superiority of inferiority of a kind, but alway of a specific individual, and even here, not following his kind, religions, the way they lived either in a primitive basic setting or an advance one, from which he belong but following his actions either good, neutral or bad.
For me, every human, everybody days persons, are in a neutral state because just living their live without doing either big bad or big good actions.
People who realise big good actions and rise by making stuff helping a lot of people, the entire humanity or science such Nelson Nandela, Ghandi, mary Anning or Albert Einstein are above us because they become legends and famous because they help in good ways and or the benefices of our whole species. And even here, they don't use this adoration and recognition as their own advantages to get free additional things, they still fierce and most of the time even prefer to have remained neutral if it's was possible.
And people who realise big bad actions such attrocities, genocides, high criminals stuff, and only when it's not accidental, on purspose and worse when they were happy to did the things for pleasure, are under the common people, because they do bads stuffs who are against our species (for example : Hitler and Staline can't considered as good or neutral people, and saying they were inferior to others humans will be not an insult).
(again, all this is just my personnal vision).
To be again on the suject of races, for me, it's preferable to considered every kind of humans as "Morphs" of the same species, because, like I said, every physical traits to made apart each kind are naturals, not made under artificial environement.
With "Major morphs" having all several or few sub-morphs following the case, and after that populations, sub-population and groups (and here using the term "Ethnic" because this word refers more on the culturals aspects and differences, religions, believes and behaviors than on the biological traits).
Like (African) Black People, Asian, Caucassian/White People, Amerindian, Native South American, Indian, Indonesian, Autraslian Aboriginals, etc...
And to remind, our species is mean to be dark skinned at the base, and most humans on Earth have a more or less dark skin (from malt color pattern to utra pure night black), and light white colred people are a minority in comparison.
The very first Homo sapiens individuals were current modern African black people, and every others majors morphs/kind of humans descend from them.
And because of this, every humans on Earth is technically, and is, black too.
Every others majors morphs I just mentionend before are just a kind of black people too.
If something said to me one day that I'm black, he will be right.
I know that is a very long comment, but your own comment inspired me and I thing that was relevant to precise and put again the things, fct and definiton how they are because people often uses in an abusive ways such terms or words whithout knowing the truth behind it.

Wow! You definitely put in a lot of time and detail into your response. I thank you for it. I actually don't view myself as a white/Caucasian because there's a lot of stigma around traits like that. I also don't call myself American because I am a melting pot of genes from so many other countries. I call myself just a human being, every other thing you can attach to me is just an adjective. I'm glad I can be inspiring to people like you, it gives me a lot of satisfaction. The way Kaimeran humans treat Earth humans just reminded me of how racism has impacted history and it can get dark a lot. If more people saw that we are all one race, we can be more peaceful to each other. That's my way of going about it at least.
Exactly! I have humans in my world too, descended from Clovis Native Americans. I chose these people because Native Americans today have a well-deserved reputation regarding a spiritual connection to nature, which my world is all about. Unlike Kaimere though, modern man can travel to and fro from Earth anytime they like, most often through their dreams.
Glad to have it all laid out, in and out of universe. I was very surprised after finishing the first anthology to learn about the long lives and slow growth of Kaimerans.

This was a nice video. Like this topic, as it definitely expands on an often overlooked subject of Kaimeran culture. (At least, in my opinion.) Nice job.
My question though is that if such a slow rate of maturation is part of a Kaimeran's life, then does it stand to reason that it is a higher priority for any Kaimeran group to keep children alive and prevent death from the creatures of Kaimere than it already is for Homo sapiens (Especially if it seems that the creatures have comparatively faster maturation rates to Kaimerans), or is it still the same amount of importance as that of a Homo sapiens (which is to say, still of very high priority, especially given the previously mentioned dangerous creatures)?
(Especially in the case of a Hukulgor, Uktan, Cocatrice, big cat, etc.)

Great video as always. It's always amazing learning more about your world. The preference for recognizing development rather than age is very logical and understandable. A few small questions based on details from this first being the mention of offworld colonies of the first children. They had spaceflight? I can't imagine them getting far beyond Kaimere's moon but certainly is an interesting detail. Second, and more of a personal curiosity, do the hinterland giants know about Earth humans in any capacity or are they ignorant of them? Finally, I'm curious about the continued existence of the mention of human servants/slaves in the free states; I thought the precedent set by the barren plague let to a revilement against this practice and led to it's extinction in the known world? Am I misremembering your lore or is it just limited to this region?
The First Children had spaceship, and some of them were polited by grey alien-like homunculies that were sent on Earth to collect animals life for their experimentation.
These ships still active and flight in space around the planet earth, always collecting specimens but since their master are extinct and these homunculies being the intellect of an IA, they capture but release the creatures after a certain time.
The Western Giants must have heard of humans in Free-States by mouth to ears but their range don't match with the ones of the humans in Free-States (the only current population inside the Known World).
So it's less likely that hey even heard of the Earth. And even, it's rumors and legends for them at maximum.
The Pandemic Plague is one of the great reason for why slavery of normal human is mostly prohibited in Kaimeran culture. But the Free-States have bypassed this law by making their humans as Free-Workers.
Because of this, human under the comandment of Free-States Kaimeran not endure a lot or as high the bads things normals slaves endure in general, and are more or less well treated, but tensions still persits between humans and Free-States kaimeran and the formers between the rest of the Kaimerans.

So, if I clearly understand, the Homo altus, aka Western Giants or Hinterland Giants, have a range that go from the whole Arvel Western Continent, but also have a population in Ni'Khar forest above the Sea of the dancing Sun, and some that are scattered a little here and here in the Houze Prairie nearby.
Only the Kaimeran inside or at the limits of this range meet them and coexist without problem with them despite the numerous differences in term of cultures and biology.
Unions between Kaimeran and Western Giants occured time to time, with strong bonds inside their couple, but they rarely can have offspring by their own.
When they manage to have hybrid progeny (who isn't a metis because from two apart species), this latter is never fertile itself.
These rare hybrids (Homo (sapien) kaimeriensis x Homo altus) reach a size in the middle of his two mothers species, and have a longer lifespan than the one of a Western Giant but lesser than the one of a Kaimeran.
Physically, especially in the head's shape, they tend to be closer in appearance to Western Giants, but have the pointed ears of Kaimeran.
These hybrids live perfectly well and have any social problem, since they are even always favorized and put in great responsabilities in the groups in which they live, depicted as positive symbols between the two species.

If we just received more and precious overall highlights about the childhood of Kaimeran and the 3 others humans species they commonly have the most interaction, it's always a mystery about why the Portal hive merge with their body for their whole species. And not the others homo species too.
The only others example being the First Childrens.

It will be explained someday, but as the details are a major plot point in the novel series, it may be a while before I make an episode on the subject. Until then I can only offer what conjecture the Kaimeran peoples themselves believe
Random Question :
1- What the species name of the First Childrens, Homo nevrospensis, mean ?
2 - Why you change again the taxonomy of the Human and Kaimeran as two separate species and no more as two subspecies like you decided to made them since their existence and arrival on Kaimere was too recent in geological level to made them enough different ?
3 - the Western Giants/Hinterland Giants look like big Neandertals, especially at their face and skull's shape. A convergent traits ? For what needs ?
1. It means puppeteer, or puppet master, in Ancient Greek.
2. As we very likely could freely mate with descends of H. erectus populations, species distinctions in humans is more to acknowledge different adaptations than anything else, and Kaimerans are definitely distinct due to their longer lives. Some Assembly naturalists classify them as a subspecies of H. sapiens but giving them their own species is conventional.
3. Not to do with Neanderthals specifically. This is a trait seen in H. erectus, which both H. altus, heidelbergensis, and neanderthalensis inherited. Humans lack the brow ridges because we are neotenic, and never grow the adult trait of pronounced brow ridges, likely so we have more space for the front parts of the brain.

The debate in Kaimere canon isn't close and far to be close, but only the future will show us what will happen.
But fact is, I liked a lot they were (or are) a subspecies.
And that homo sapien composed by subspecies isn't a bad and polemical thing.
It's not the fact that sudspecies exist.
A subspecies being just a population with his own physical and genetic traits but not enough to made it, for now, apart from the whole species in question. And only affect surface and minors elements on the body, that don't affect the things members of a subspecies Can do in term of actions or their intelligence level compared to another subspecies of the species.
It's the use of the fact that you made with that could be bad and polemical.
Mostly if you use this fact as lazy excuse to pretend yourself as superior to the others thus these latter can do exactly the same action things since only their skin colors is different.
But outside that, the concept of subspecies isn't polemical and bad, and can be apply without problem on human homo sapien if one day that will occured (our species not having yet subspecies because she's too young, having not even one million years of existence).
If we apply it without problem on animals, there any excuse to exclude our species or any others humans species that existed before, because humans still animals too.
To conclude, even if currently subspecies were reconized, today, at our level of intelligence and conscience, the statut of a man must not be determined following his race/ethnics or subspecies, but following if he do good, neutral or bad actions.
If people want to know how the taxonomy of hybrids work, I will explain.
Species and subspecies have all binomial scientific names. One first to refers to the genus, a second for the species and a third for the subspecies.
Hybrids between two species being not (exclusive) members either of one or the others of their mothers species, we juste writte them with the two species binominal names with an X between the two.
As here, with Kaimeran and the Western/Hinterland Giants hybrids :
Homo (sapien) kaimeriensis x Homo altus
It's like that that hybrids' taxonomy work !

If I remember well and say any errors, inside the Known World, there only normal humans at the Free-States and in Kabarahar, or in good majority and almost not in the others part of the region.
And these humans working as free-workers, because Kaimeran have prohibited slavery, even if the Free-States (the less progressist republic of the Kaimeran countries) have more or less diverted to their own advantage this rule.
Free States humans work but a more or less treated good with food and home to sleep, but making these elements as infinte debts however.
Tensions and discrimination between humans and many Free-States people are also present, even if a good majority of Free-Staes people, along with mostly all others kaimeran of the Known World are prety clean toward humans in term of view and even would prefer that this half-slavery made by the Free-States end.
Normal humans were brought on Kaimere in mass during the Mercantile Age by Free-States people, and the people brought from Earth were already slaves traded from numerous Earth civilisation such Egyptian, Atzec, Greek or North American Mount Builders. Kaimeran used humans as slaves et this period.
However, pigs they used as food to gave a diseases that will lead to a great plague/pandemic (see "Pigs of Kaimere episode") that Kaimeran will attributed by mistake to humans, and will not let them live alongside them.
Humans were forced to still on boats on seas, and all of these Earth civilisations spread around Kaimere at the time, and established themsleves here and here (with, for example, Egyptian on Kairul west coasts, where Maku/Selikith people lives too).
This is why, in good part, Kaimeran have a great hate and bad view over humans and Earth (aka the Plagues Lands) in general. And also part of why Kaimeran have prohibited slavery.
In Modern Kaimere, most human inside the Known World lives in the Free-Staes and i's capital Kabarahar.
Kaimeran, mostly ones that were born after the Plague event and with time, have more or less forgive human and don't see or really, anymore to keep humans like the Free-States continue to do as relevant.
Because what Free-States do is in great contrast to all the others relationships that Kaimeran have with others humans species such the Western/Hinterland Giants (Homo altus) and Tlaton (Homo kaishelensis) who are good, healthy and, in a world with great and numerous dangers, beneficial to everybody survivals.
Because the survival of the whole species pass in priority before all the rest, Kaimeran tend today to prefers to have less tension and diplomatic with humans.

Random question : Western/Hinterland Giants, Tlaton and the others humans species on Kaimere have their own society lesser advance/more primitive than the one of the Kaimeran, who is in a pre-industrial stage, or are alsmot also all in a pre-industrial stage too ?
There’s a range of complexity in settlements and societies. Some Maku live in decentralized bands, others in vast cities. A ton of factors at play, but generally the Kaimerans are the most technologically complex.
I think it's interesting Kaimerans age far slower than humans living for centuries but I think it's messed up they have us as slaves. Besides, I wonder if you have information about the Giants and Tiaton in Kaimere
Agreed, definitely messed up. A lot of kaimerans in the portal city are outspoken against the practice, and there's hope that the few remaining states to keep enslaved humans release them. I've got lots of information about the giants and tlaton, and plan to go into more detail in future episodes!
But it's understandable that the Free States are the lesser progressist and the main last republic where humans are keep as slaves.
Because I remind that Kaimeran think that the Great Plague pandemic gived by the Pigs during the Mercantil Age was gived by the human.
So they begin to hate them.
And if today, most Kaimeran even inside the Free States capital have more or less forgived human, because most of them are young and haven't lived this pandemic, the few remaining old Kaimeran, who always have a bad view on humans, decide to keep this slavery domain.

Living for so long is neat on one hand, but on the other hand, it only raises the average Kaimeran’s chance of being mauled by one of the myriad dangers of the Known World!

Absolutely! In the Free States, Republic, and Empire, people stand a decent chance of dying of old age. In Pakardia, the southern islands, and hinterlands, life is a lot more dangerous and much fewer people reach such ages.

So are the hinterland giants different to the giants on the houze prairie?
The hinterland giants are a naturally evolved species, while the houze prairie giants are homunculi formed from hominins (I'm not sure if it was the hinterland giants themselves or a different descendant of H.erectus) with Palaeoloxodon genes.
Yes indeed! There are also giants with titanosaur and sloth genes but the prairie giants were made using elephants

However, populations of different earth civilisations such Egyptian, Greek and Atzec managed to established themselves here and here on the planet outside the Known World after being let to themselves when the plague pandemic who end the Mercantil Age occured.

If unions between Kaimeran and Western/Hinterland Giants Homo altus don't produce often fertiles offsprings, it's because their two species come from two far related lineages despite being in the same genus.
However, Kaimeran and Human, being two direct sister species (or subspecies of the same species), the hybridization success is of course way more high with fertiles offsprings.
Hybridization between numerous humans species was very high during the Pleistocene, with Homo sapiens, Neanderthal, Denisovan and others having hybridized without problem and their offsprings being fertiles without problem too, giving a good genetic diversity.
Overtime, all the species were integrated by Homo sapien.
And all the DNA of the others species is still present inside the genome of our species.
As an effect, our species is no more pure since a very long time.
And if pure homo sapien humans still exist today, they will be black people in Africa.
Since the modern black people race/ethnic is the one from which every others races/ethnic descend from (including Caucassian/white people, Asian people, Amerindian/Red people, etc...).

It is believed the First Children were smaller due to having island ancestors but it isn't known with certainty. It's also not known how they domesticated magic.
