  • When comparing humans to other animals, we clearly stand apart. While intelligence at our level seems our most diagnostic trait, quick review of cognition in such animals as other apes, whales, elephants, and corvids shows we are not as unique in this regard as we once thought. In Kaimere, several animals close the gap even further.
Songs of the Inland Sea is the sequel to Tales of Kaimere! It is a nautical anthology, with all six short stories and novellas taking place in aquatic settings. There are heists on a ship, a desperate chase through a marsh, and a survival story from the perspective of a killer whale!

      Problems with his sapient animals:
1)The Notzokideu are suppose to be pterosaurs but they look like mammals. Why?
      2) In the title card one of the vidoe features sapient dinos with a beak. Dromeosaurs dont have nor need beaks.
3)When it comes to interactions between your sapient species you only portrayed them as being ftiendly, ignoring inter-species antagonistic behaviours.

@@Thunderblock7889 1- convergent evolution; they are not as similar as they seem at first glance.
2- firstly it's not a dromeosaur, secondary there's no reason why a dromeosaur wouldn't evolve a "beak", it's happened several times in dinosaurs
3- he's only mentioned three examples here, which happened to have interacted with the first children and so have something in common.
4- not really. look at dolphins, whilst they can use tools a lot of the time they don't really need to.
5- the idea is that those species are keeping their culture to themselves for them most part.
7-you really seem to be getting the wrong idea here.

@@Thunderblock7889they're pterosaur and thats convergent evolution and they don't even look like mammals.
2 they're not really dromaesaur and don't have beak just a thin snout. And beak can appear on that kind of dinosaurs.
3 nope, human can have antagonistic behaviour, we can't really know how other species with completly different behaviour and biology would act like.
Plus those antagonistic behaviour are mostly societal and cultural in humans, not innate.
We coexisted with other human specie in relative peace and even mated with them, War was invented after sedentarisation.
And we are talking about scholar not soldier, they will try to learn and understand not destroy and exploit.
With a different culture and history and biodiversity human in Kaimere have a wildly different behaviour ans view on the world than us on earth.
Most of their weapon are not used against other human and when they're they're generally non lethal. As their really long lifespan make killing other human a crime even more taboo than here on earth.
They avoid war when possible and the fight rely more on securing an area and ressources than killing the ennemy.
They kind of live in a hostile ecosystem, they needed to cooperate to survive way more than us for as long as they lived on Kaimere.
And the first contact with other specie was not really friendly nor hostile but suspicious, as Afterall
All of those species had been in Contact with the first childrens which kind of gave a bad impression of humanoïds in general.
Kaimeran had to dissipate the issue by saying " hey we are not the first children and we hate them too, they're bastard and Monsters"
And when you have a common ennemy and historical trauma that make something in common helping the development of friendly relation between the two.
4 nope you don't need complex tools to be sapient, and thats anthropocentrist.
Tool use is a consequence of intelligence not the other way around.
High intelligence have other use like communication
5 the video explain thats it's not in detail, just a generalisation of the specie culture, not each different clan and Culture of each specie as it would be pointless and way too long to explain.

I really like the main picture of this episode ! To see that despite both five are from differents species (subspecies in the case of the kaimeran woman and the human man), they speak all to the others whithout problems like if there was anything and everything was normal, and everybody treat everones as equals. (That quite nice and positive to see !)
Good part of all that is that, despite beings from different species, if their body of both are extremely different, their inside is however completely identical in everything.
To put things in perspective, in such case when a sapient/sophont being, for example a human, meet another yet different sapient/sophont beings, like an alien from space (for example), the second being is at the end for the human just another human but inside a alien body.
Same reaction from the alien itself by the way !
With for him, the human is just another alien but inside a human (or naked ape if he don't know the word) body.
Here, on the picture, this reaction is applied by the characters, for each one, all the others, after some time after the intital meeting, are basically being not differents from its own kind but like members of its species inside foreigns bodies.

I feel like Notzokideu would like boomerang/frisbee-like weapons. Some kind of horizontally-thrown spinning things
I also wonder what was so special about the first children(and humans in general). Why didn't a notzikideu or khorikoim domesticate magic so thoroughly? Or go beyond stone-age culture?

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  Год назад +2

      It could certainly be useful!
The First Children are assumed to have accidentally domesticated magic, as a strain happened to be affixed to the grains they were domesticating. I discuss this a bit in the Vermin episode in April. The Notzokideu and Manephaunt only developed more sophisticated tech and tools when competition with the first humans forced them to. Before that, it wasn't necessary, especially for the notzokideu given their beak and claws were superior to the first stages of tools. If your claws make better weapons than a basic weapon like a rock, you'll never have need to develop that rock into a comfortable weapon and don't need to hone that rock into a hand axe, then spear, and so forth. When they encountered Homo erectus with stone axes and spears, that's when they began developing tools since suddenly their claws were outclassed.

In fact I’m 100% giving you all the credit for both the characters the story of kaimere and the lore behind the raven king , I just really think more people should get to see your amazing creative and your godly story telling . Plus I think having the raven king be a character that just shows up out of the blue at any time would be amazing . You know like a kind of villain who everybody thinks is dead but then boom he’s just there in your comments or chat . That and I just really love your story’s

A "little" list of what we have currently, for the ones who wonder how many sapient/sophont beings exist on Kaimere alone.
Sapient beings on Kaimere (so far) :
    * Human species =
    - Kaimeran (Homo (sapiens) kaimerensis. Composed by several ethnics groups following the different regions of the Known World. With the Khalin, the Pakardiant, the Qadanith/Qajarith, Free-States, the Shu, the Telmede, the Kentarim/Khalin-Arvelith and the Arvelith. All themselves omposed by several sub-groups)
    - Human (Homo (sapiens) sapiens. Composed by Modern Human (Assembly members or “Free-Workers” of the Free-States inside the Known World, but also descendants Egyptian, Mound Builders, Greeks and Olmecs outside this region on the other continents)
    - Hinterland/Western/Arvelith Giants (Homo altus, human of Arvel/Western Continent. The Pakardiant population may represent a distinct species)
    - Kaishelan/Tlaton (Human of Kaishel/South/Polar Continent)
    - Kairulan/Eastern Giants (Human of Kairul/Eastern Continent)
    - Northern/Ni’Khar/Ni’Khari Giants (Human of Ni’Khar/Northern Continent)
    - Permian Islanders (Human of the Permian Islands)
    - Jurassic Islanders (Human of the Jurassic Islands)
    - First Childrens (Homo nevrospensis, extinct)
    - Selikith/Maku (breed of non-kaimeran human created by the First Children and living now on Kairul)
    - Vampires/Ghouls (just normal humans or kaimerans that have undergone a rare mutation)
    - Some others species of Homo unamed and not discovered and not shown so far.
    * Sapient non-human species =
    (Naturals beings)
    - Notzokideu (Flightless (Neo)Tapejarid pterosaur of Pakardia)
    - Juiji (Flightless (Neo)Tapejarid pterosaur of Kaishel. Related to the Notzokideu. Other species outside him also exist in the same time on Kaishel)
    - Chuga elephant/Chagaith/Khorikoim/Manephaunt (Gomphotere elephant)
    - All the others Elephantidae and Gomphoteres of Kaimere (include the Highland Mammoth/Bosuga, the Drenduga, their dwarf species, and Lunar/Grassland Oliphaunt)
    - Skraa'aee/Dinosauroïd ((Neo)Troodontidae of Kairul)
    - Around a dozen of others unamed and unseen species of Sophont/Sapient animals species discovered by the Assembly so far.
(Potentially sapient/sophont natural beings. Very good evidences, but not defintive conclusions)
    - An’Garu (Pakardiant’s Giant Ape. Primate of the Gloved Gibbon family)
    - Moqrin (Species of orca, from the genus Orcinus. Include Moqrin/Gaqrin (normal typical Orca)’s Hybrids like Goliath. Should be in the confirmed list, per say).
    (Non-natural/Magical beings)
    - Harpies (Homunculi)
    - Prairie Giants/Ogres (Homunculi)
    - Khalorim/Khalori (Homunculi. Merfolk. Composed by several species)
    - Milaq (Homunculi. Merfolk)
    - Zhere Kun (Homunculi. Merfolk)
    - Abagora (Homunculi. Merfolk)
    - Ree’ek (Homunculi)
    - Lu Gashul
    - Bokushia/Olikideu, the Crocodile Demon (Homunculi. Specimen from an unnamed homunculi species so far)
    - Grimhlaya/Grendel (Homunculi. Specimen from an unnamed homunculi species so far)
    - All others Homuncilies species created by the First Children that exist on Kaimere.
All others animal species, so far, are Primitive/Animal Intelligence, so not sapient/sophont.

Instead, for instance, of evolving into more complex lifeforms (multicellular organisms or protozoan colonies - even if I know there's such latter lifeforms in Kaishel, my question is why did they let down that path on a broader scale?)

      Thanks!
      1. It is believed that they saw themselves as distinct to a degree that they didn’t see other people as their level of sentience. Other peoples weren’t, well, people, so they were ethically able to mistreat them. They seem to have cared for one another. A civilization that large couldn’t function without at least a degree of empathy, but it seems at least the dominant culture did not extend that empathy to other human species.
Depends! For the manephaunt, who are strictly matrilineal and lead by the eldest female, sex and gender are important. The Skraa’aee are dimorphic in color, and color is very important to them, and most of their cultures do put a fair emphasis on sex. They are a patrilineal people for the most part, mostly because males take charge of brooding. Notzokideu aren’t dimorphic and sex/gender really only matters for the act of mating. Some clans incorporate gender from interactions with Pakardiant but generally it’s not something they personally care about.
The Skraa’aee tend to have a high pitched somewhat screeching voice. Notzokideu are mimicking words other people say, so their words often have a disjointed intonation like a gps or other AI language software. Don’t know that property but hope that clarifies!

So, they know what they are doing. Some creatures on Objecia that are not objects or neohumans already have developed society, a language, and even religions.

I’m taking some notes from modern species: many are what I would consider sophont (though I must say I haven’t studied animal cognition and the consensus of crow, elephant, ape, and cetacean has been challenged). It has been mentioned that Earth’s high number of highly intelligent species may be due to the ice ages (cold leads to stored nutrients which could possibly lead to greater ability to invest in intelligence) but that theory isn’t without its detractors and is pretty fringe so I didn’t take it as gospel.
That said, Kaimere is a very large planet and while I included many nonhuman sophonts from Earth like the clades mentioned above, I felt it would be odd for the only high-intelligence species to come from recent harvests, so I developed a few indigenous clades to get there on their own. Kaimere’s biodiversity is several orders of magnitude higher than on Earth, so I imagine the ratio of sophont animas kinda evens out.

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  Год назад +1

Their origins are unknown, but the description of many beings calling them insects or monsters is due to their suits or Homunculi. The beings themselves have had skeletons found and studied and while early archaeologists assumed them children or Kaimerans with any number of growth conditions, it’s been long recognized that these are the First Children of ancient myth

I only question how those lil elephant dudes can craft their items and materials, I know elephant trunks and such are very sensitive and nimble but they must have some insane drive to work with others to get simple tasks done like carving out wood for a ship or the weaving of fibers. What for us with two hands and ten individual digits (plus our mouths and feet) they've only got their trunk and arguably foot pads/lower jaws to work with.

Errors and problemz with his sapient animals:
1)The Notzokideu are suppose to be pterosaurs but they look like mammals. Why?
      2) In the title card one of the vidoe features sapient dinos with a beak. Dromeosaurs dont have nor need beaks.
3)When it comes to interactions between your sapient species you only portrayed them as being ftiendly, ignoring inter-species antagonistic behaviours.
4)Sapient species objectively require to use tools to be sapient, as there is no point on having that intellect if they wont use it.
5)We also never get to see behavioural differences or clans of this sapient animals.
      6)Possible anthropomorphism and anthropomocentrism.
7)Pterosaurs cannot become sapient because they cant walk upright. Only vertebrates that can walk upright can be sapient unless they have trunks.
8)Species must be divided by clans yet we never see them.

That was a very good video ! However, it’s true that the terms to refer to an either animal intelligence or human intelligence beings others than a human is sometimes, see often, difficult to understand and can lead to some confusions.
Here the definition, in their pure and objective form, of the term used in it, or frequently used in your other videos (from Wiktionary and some others official professional sites) =
    - Sophont : (Science fiction) To be intelligent, intelligent species.
    - Sentient : who is sensible/is endowed with sensation.
    - Sapient : 1 . Wise
2 . Related to Homo sapiens/ human (or being as Homo sapiens/a human).
Basically, to be short, to have the same, equal or greater, (level of) intelligence and awareness than a human.
And, simply, to be a human in an animal body (or in an alien body, if the being is an extraterrestrial).
If I put that here, it’s because in your videos, you often referred and used the words “Sentient” and “Sophont” in a different way that their true and commonly accepted meaning.
If I say no mistakes, from your videos, basically, “Sentient” seems to mean “Near Sophont/Human intelligence and awareness (or simply Sapient)”.
While “Sophont” is here just a complete synonym for “Sapient” and mean “Human intelligence and awareness”.
And indeed, is the case in real life as well, if from the definition of the word I relay here, we take “To be intelligent, intelligent species” as to be human intelligence and awareness.
Of course, any bad criticism intended here, and I completely respect (completely) your own personal definition of these terms.
But still, even, this specific and personal definition use (can) sometimes leave (many of) us (including me, especially once when I started to follow the channel) confused or biased at the end.
Because some of us currently or have thought that some others non-sapient animal in Kaimere actually are sapient. (Myself included, when long ago I see the Non-Hominid Intelligent Animals slide picture in the “Kaimere Q&A 2 | Sci-Fi/Fantasy Worldbuilding Questions” episode very long ago).
Like the Ru’Kel parrot, other parrots (like the Luka Parrot), several dolphins, some whales, crows, the different Kraken species, or even the iconic Indrakai and Titan Crow themselves. Among some others.
Sure, they are all very intelligent animals, but not sapient/sophont. (like even explained here in this video, even the Assembly commonly, in a great consensus, to not regard them as sapeintsophont due to the extreme great lack of all the evidence needed to be regarded as such)
Because these terms are quite tricky and complex terms, most (if not all) people who made Spec Evo or fantasy or science-fiction setting don’t use “Sentient” or “Sophont” for the sake of simplicity.
They simply use just the term “Sapient” or “Primitive/Animal” intelligence, to differentiate clearly the beings that are exactly like human inside and the ones that are just normal animals.
Because these two term are precise yet more understandable and affordable to us. (and the common way/style I will always follow and use as well, personally).
For, me personally, the term “Sapient” is better to (be) use and to manage to explain things in a simple way.
All fantasy and science fiction franchises use this term very commonly (Star Wars for example).
In general, simply, every beings referred as sapient are completely like humans in intelligence and awareness, and everything else is just typical animal intelligence.
    Nothing else and it’s all.
While “Sentient” is more scientific and “Sophont” being a term exclusive to science-fiction but still not frequently used, so less known to most people.
In addition to be quite abusive term that can be used on a very ultra large panel of beings, both Sapients and non-sapients in the same time, togethers.
Since “Sentient” mean just and literally being capable to feel sensation and/or emotions and experience things subjectively (like being sad, or being hurt, to feel the pain).
However, every organic life on Earth, even from the very first one, and the most basic, are sentient.
The famous Blob, aka Physarum polycephalum, despite being unicellular, have proved to be extremely complex and to feel pain, and stuff showing it can remember its own experienced and to give them to other members of its own species, to have memories.
Plants life as a whole also is a perfect example. To feel pain, and emotion, and to have memories.
And “Sophont” mean just and literally being intelligent, whatever the subject is sapient or not.
And even just stop to HAVE an intelligence at all, whatever the level of this latter, in some aspects, if we really take the extreme purest form of the term.
Meaning that even very low intelligence animals (like a Mussel, with 0 to 8 of QI) or even AI like Robots can be called under this term, that they are “Sophont”.
Because even if limited, they still have an intelligence of their own.
So, yes, that quite a very complex and tricky subject and area that we are here.
But of course, everything here was just my personal thoughts and what are actually the things in general and as most people used them most of the time.
Which however don’t mean there are restrictions and interdictions to use some of these things out of the beaten tracks and to do things differently (whatever even a little).
And still, like I said, this episode is still very good, and I don’t think, fortunately, that it really suffers from from any kind of confusions or elements that can leave us biased.
Any of that to be completely honest.
And per say, I thing it's was also good to discuss and deep more into the uses or defintions of these terms, and to compare the different opinions and perspectives of each about them.
So, yeah, outside this big overall point, a very good episode as always !
    10/10
"Note : This comment was liked/appreciated by Kennan Taylor.
Was however forced to delete my comment due to low and not nice comment from a guy having negatives speciesism and who keep saying what keenan was doing was dumb and anthropomorphising, thus not."
Keenan's official response to this comment :
"I didn't use 'my own definition of the terms' the words have pretty nuanced meanings and I stand by my use of them. As clarified in the episode, all three words can appropriately be applied, but since sophont has the most narrow definition, I defaulted to its use. Any word I use is going to get advocates for the other two in the comments so I'm not surprised, but again, I stand by what I said."
