Thanks for making this, my son overheated my lancer today & pulled plugs cuz would not start & water shot out each cylinder! Really hoping can save motor. Watching this helped answer a lot of questions!! Gonna give it a try! Looks like a lot of work! I am old school mechanic that likes my old 68 firebird or my 66 Chevy truck! Easier to twist wrench on & fix or remedy yourself! 56 year old man gonna give this Japanese beer can a try to repair!! Thanks!
How did it turn out
@@rinki4045that’s what I’m saying I’m in the middle of doing my 02 oz rally intake manifold bracket being a b
Did this a year and a half ago on my '05 OZ Rally following this video extensively. First time replacing a head gasket, glad to have this as a guide!
Thank you so much, i just bought a ralliart and it has some leaking gaskets. I have always been pretty mechanically inclind and i cant wait to work on the car. Thank you for the tutorial, it makes me very confident in my replacing.
Great video. This is exactly what I needed to watch as I'm about to get to work on my head gasket replacement
Really thoughtful of you putting all this detailed information out there from all your experiences just for the sake of helping others, it motivated me to try this on my own getting some of the parts out was a challenge, it's always like a puzzle with barely enough room to move your knuckles but I was successful in getting to the head gasket unfortunately the coolant ports are corroded so i have to get a head or an engine 🙄.
I have learned that the timing belt doesn’t need to remove, thanks a lot
Your video has helped me so much with replacing head gasket on 06' Mitsubishi Lancer. Really appreciate the video and knowledge you have passed on. Much respect.
I laughed pretty good with "especially with whatever genius did this job" -reused torque to yield head bolts and broke it off. I have the head @ a machine shop and getting it pressure tested, machined and a valve job. I followed your advice with a few razor blades and scotch bright pads to clean up the head, intake/exhaust manifolds. I'm ready to get the head back on and fire the motor up. Once it's running good I'm doing the timing belt & water pump. Really appreciate all the help. You are a great mechanic and helped me so much. Thx
That’s what I’m about to do on my 06 lancer, any tips?
Thank you for doing us all a favor and making this video it was very helpful, I was having a hard time finding out the head bolt torque specs.
Its a procedure involving steps, degrees, and torque
Awesome video brother I haven't tackled mine yet but I feel like I got it after watching thanks alot
Thank you, my belt snapped under 60k of use(rallying the whole time,) , so I gotta check whats bent.
Will be doing this on my 06 lancer 5 speed
I´m was looking for a video on this job for a Space Star but think it´s pretty much the same motor, looks very similar. Nice video , but get a head cam and you could also shoot every step, you miss a few asteps here and there but otherwhise an excellent job.
Grate video am thinking about buying a Hyundai (Mitsubishi) galloper ( montero) model 2000 that needs a head gasket replacement, i have no experience in car repair work but this gave me an idea of how its done hopefully can apply similar method to do it.
Have you ever had to repair head bolt threads in a Lancer? I want to make sure I have everything I might need before attempting this job, and I heard that stripped threads are a potential issue after a car overheats.
Need to do this on my 02 lancer👍
Where does the EGR port run to in the head. Trying to clean out the EGR system but not sure if the EGR port on the head goes to the crankcase or to the intake valves.
Hi, do you think it's the same procedure for a 2007 Mit Eclipse 2.4 engine, like the torque spec for the head and loosening and tightening it back? 🤔
Nice video by the way 👍
me gustaria saber si el motor de 2002 es igual que el 2005 y la letras ES el torque es el mismo Head gasket
Good job ,just wondering if you check that valve seats properly on cylinder?
michael villanueva I had the head checked at the machine shop.
Good work!! You winn a subscriber.👍
Did you have to do all those steps to remove the gasket?
I have a question but my language is not good, is there a water elbow in the back? I have a leak next to the pipe from the engine head, there is a water line going to the throttle, one from the pipe and the other from the engine head, correct me, is there an elbow in the back or what 7:20
I want to ask what is the factory size of head bolts? Is it 95mm? I got the same engine
@Alan, great video Sir. I have an ‘02 lancer which doesn’t start. Tried to check the compression and there’s oil all over spark plugs. Three of the coils are stuck. Took out one and did a compression test. It’s at 35. Sometimes goes to 60. Do you think I can further investigate it by changing the head gasket or junking is better?
Junking a car is sad. Maybe try a engine swap
Sorry for the delayed response, it's likely the bottom end (piston rings) from the sounds of it, but a leak down test would confirm.
How did u take off top timing belt bolt which way u turned it to not make it move? U said a Prybar
Where did you get the service manual from? I have an 03 Lancer and plan on doing some work to it. Thanks
I found the fsm manual on a lancer forum. Google it and you will find the fsm manual.
Kong Chang has a link to the manual on his channel if you still need it.
How much would it cost to get repaired at the shop?
Question!!! What size socket for the head bolts??? great video!!
It's a 10mm 12 point socket, I recommend using a 3/8 drive style but it's still doable with a 1/2 inch drive too, only thing is that the two front middle head bolts next to the front center head bolt will get stuck because the 1/2 inch drive socket is too fat, but I just turned them clockwise a bit and turned them out by hand.
What happens if I don't remove the bolts as the manufacturer says?
There's a chance your could warp the head. The idea is that you want to remove them as evenly as possible
Alldata has the procedure but I kinda wanted to see a video on it first. Edited comment. My bad read description wrong
Hmmm, came right out of the FSM, and I do show the angle of you watch the whole video. Thanks though
@@AlanFixedIt I watch it. I was reading mine in Nms lol
wa, good job. a lot information in it
good stuff. i see the vice grips...guess u didnt use a stud extractor set?
rbgpirate luckily it was loose enough that a stud extractor was not needed
My torque wrench only measures from 20lb-ft, and i dont have access to one that measures 15ft-lb. Any suggestions?
Harbor Freight sells some pretty decent ones for under $30.
What type of socket did you use???to take the head bolts
Just a normal 12 point. Most socket sets have 6 and 12 point versions of each size.
From comment below what if i put it back together and then turn the timing gear?
Wait do we have to loosen the timing belt or can we just yank it off? I have some sort of ticking noise and I looked into the spark plug hole and found some damage to piston No. 1
Once you have the motor lined up with timing marks, you can remove the belt. With the belt off, don't rotate the cam or crank while assembled.
@@AlanFixedItwhat socket is needed to take off the head? i got one bolt loose, but number two started to move then stopped, whats next?
Unfortunately I don't remember off the top of my head because this was quite a long time ag, but if you think you have compromised threads, you can try walking the bold in and out slowly to break it free?
How much did you spend in total? Buying the car, machine shop, parts?
How much did you sell it for?
Your assuming he sold it
How much do you charge to do this ?
Torque specs are in the description!
AlanFixedIt yo will the torque specs work on a 4g92 engine? (1996 lancer)?
You can see the car in my video
if you happen to do another Mitshubishi Lancer ES 2006 i would like to see how you do Head in details because I'm still having problems with releasing the back of head and i can't get to it from behind motor head. i need help please
I can help
Hey man what do I do if I blew a head? Is there anyway I could replace it?
If your head is cracked or warped beyond saving, you can replace it as I did in this video
@@AlanFixedIt is there a shop i can send my head to get repaired
How did you remove the cam shaft bolt???
U can remove it whit a inpac gun
What if the timing gear is not lined up tdc? Is there a easy way to make sure its tdc? Cylinder head is already off and back from the machine shop. The harmonic balancer is lined up the T and notch are lined up.
If I understand your question, as long as the timing marks are lined up on the crank pulley, and the #1 cylinder is all
The way up then you are at TDC. If the timing marks are lined up but the #1 cylinder is not all the way up, then rotate the motor 1 roatation and it should be up.
How long does it to do this job
Where did you get the information you printed from

Hi can i have a copy of your manual? i got 4g15 engine and i encounter oil leak thank you for your response
Elmerson Rogel check here: www.evolutionm.net/forums/lancer-troubleshooting/443432-lancer-factory-service-manuals-available-here.html
Hi Alan. I have a question. I got my head back from the machine shop (they machined/pressure tested and did a valve job). I'm put the cam back in and ready to do the rocker arm/lash lifters. The FSM says to clean and fill up the lifters with diesel fuel and install. Did you do that? Or just bleed the lifters? I'm trying to avoid the lifter noise issue on auto adjusting lifters on the Lancer.
Ben Hutchins you can soak them to pre fill them. Better safe than sorry, but on this car I did neither and it self bled and was quiet. They aren’t the same as say a v8 lifter that are super important to soak/bleed. These are pretty forgiving. As long as the passage ways and oil are clean it will pump itself up.
@@AlanFixedIt awesome, thanks for the quick response!
One more question. The crank is at TDC but since I had the valve job, I need to get the cam back to TDC. I put the cam back in and just want to triple check that I get the cam to TDC. I'm planning on putting the rocker arm and lifters on the head with the cam and then marking the Timing belt (which I zipped tied to the cam sprocket) and then removing the cam sprocket and putting it on the cam/head and rotating to cam/valves to TDC. The 1st and 4th pistons are TDC and I want to get the Cam/valves to TDC. Do I just rotate the cam and verify that the intake valves are about to open and line up the cam/timing marks? On your video you mentioned getting it right or one more rotation on the cam would be bad (1 rotation of crankshaft = 2 rotations of the cam). I just want to be sure I get it right. On TDC for the intake valves should the 1st /4th be ready to open when lined up with timing mark on cam?
@@AlanFixedIt I just loaded a video of where I'm at with the Lancer. Really appreciate your knowledge ruclips.net/video/Rv2wPeK0zx0/видео.html
Yes, just make sure the cam sprocket is close in position like in the video and it will be good, what I mean by making another rotation is, if it off 180 degrees or so then you would have to rotate the cam. But the timing mark will only line up on the cam in 1 orientation. So put it together, put the sprocket in loosely enough to rotate the assembly with the head off the car, make sure it’s at least close to the timing marks lining up and slap it on
Is it easier to just swap the engine?
I've done everything you can do to this engine and I would say doing a head gasket is much easier than swapping the engine
Having trouble getting the intake bracket bolt off, how did you do that part?
Jeremy Owensby @11:44 in the video I show the 2 bolts holding it on. I accessed it from the passenger side with a ratchet. They can be tight, so you may need a longer handled ratchet, breaker bar or a short pipe to slip over your ratchet Handle. If this doesn’t answer your question, please expound and I’ll do my best!
AlanFixedIt thanks It didn't help I was using a striped out socket but I was able to get it with a longer racket. Thanks again but how did you access the lower intake nuts from the bottom?
I used a box end wrench and did it from on top. Reaching around the motor. Just reach from whatever side is easier. Often needed both hands, so I had to bear hug it. And interlock another wrench for leverage.
AlanFixedIt thanks dude your hella cool, bear hug was the answer... boy that sucked lol
Glad to help! Like and subscribe!
What is the code on your air flow sensor?
