    The video suggests the following:
    1. Nasi Lemak (arguably the National Dish)
    2. Rendang ( A spicy beef dish usually eaten with white rice)
    3. Tempoyak ( Fermented durian used to prepare a fish broth, also eaten with white rice)
    4. Laksa (A noodle dish prepared in a fragant seafood broth)
    5. Roti Canai ( An Indian-inspired bread typically eaten for breakfast or supper - yeah it's really up to you).I think it's originally from Chennai, India. Anyway, the locals call it "cha-nigh".
If you ask me, a close "top-5 contenders list" / "additional-5 to make it a top-10 list", would include (in no particular order of course):
    1. Teh Tarik
An Indian-inspired 'chai tea', but stronger, frothier and not to mention sweeeter!!! Pair it up with your Nasi Lemak first thing in the morning - and why not just opt for a staycation vis-a-vis the obvious post-breakfast reaction. Some of you guys won't be able to stomach this, I mean think about it; condensed milk from the tea and spicy chilli paste from the rice meal; you do the math and erm, chemistry?? If Nasi Lemak claims to be the national dish then Teh Tarik would probably be the de facto national drink - hands down.
    2. Nasi Kerabu
It's a proper, proper rice meal and did I mention the rice is blue??? Enough said.
This dish is characteristic of the North-eastern coast (Pantai Timur). In general, if you travel to Malaysia you must try North-eastern cuisine i.e. Makanan Pantai Timur. This includes Nasi Kerabu, Nasi Dagang and Ayam Percik (specially marinated and grilled chicken), among others.
Anyway, when in Malaysia, there are simply so many types of "nasi" i.e. rice. So, just go for it. Just make sure you do not order "nasi basi" - ask a local what this means, every restaurant swears they do not sell this, ever!!!
    3. Asam Pedas Ikan Pari
This is a dish prepared with stingray ( ikan pari) and usually eaten with white rice. If Tempoyak is too pungent for you ( incidentally the best Masak Tempoyak is from Pahang state i.e. Tempoyak Ikan Patin Temerloh), then you might want to consider Asam Pedas which are best prepared in the southern states like Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.
Arguably, Asam Pedas has Minang influence which is from Indonesia. Generally speaking, you would expect Malaysian cuisine to also have influences from neighbouring countries as well as Chinese and Indian inspired flavors.
    4. Gorengan
Gorengan are basically deep-fried fritters of a wide variety. A must-try would be the Keropok Lekor, an interestingly chewy yet crispy fish-based snack that must be eaten with the specially made chili sauce. Also a must-try would be Cucur Udang, prawn-filled fritters.
    5. Kuih
Kuih is to Malaysia what Baklava is to you Turks. There are hundreds of varieties of kuih to try but my favourite would be Apam Balik - some what like a peanut-filled pancake. My second favourite would probably be the Seri Muka - yeah the one with green top and white bottom. Also, just a tip, please do avoid anything labelled "Nyonya" when it comes to kuih, if you are looking for authentic taste.
    **6. Sup Tulang Merah
I just dropped a bonus bombshell of a dish here. You probably cannot find this in Malaysia but if you do visit Peninsula Malaysia, do take some time to cross the causeway/border down south.
Search it - Locate it - Try it.
    Bismillah Aafiyet Olsun/Jemput makan, jom!

Roti Canai is not from Chennai. There is no evidence to suggest that. There is more evidence to suggest that it's most likely an innovation from locals in either Melaka or Acheh. Is it based on the Indian roti? Yes. But was it innovated in Chennai? Unlikely, roti canai, in its Malaysian form wasn't even known in Chennai before the 2000s. Chennai itself wasn't even called Chennai before 1996.

Up north Malaysia, a little sweetness is usually incorporated into the spicy dishes - and other states and homes prefer the opposite. In Sabah and Sarawak; the dishes have their own unique authenticities too, as your kindself has experienced. And Indonesian spicy food is uniquely delicious too... I just love it...

Nasi Dagang so underrated. worth a shout out. it's simply the best rice dish you'll ever taste. incredibly rich flavor. (you can see the example in the earlier part of the video where a clips from Mark Wiens channel show up). I guess it's not a "go to" recommendation because Malaysian themselves hardly ever try the real one. only in the state of Terengganu you would find the actual Nasi Dagang. it's so hard to replicate. everywhere else is a failure. Nasi Lemak is beginner level in comparison

The whole Pantai Timur region itself is underrated. Luckily, in this age and era, we got more exposure via RUclips influencers like Mark Weins and The Food Ranger who helped to promote it. And it worth to mention, it is more difficult to make a good Nasi Dagang than Nasi Lemak.

Malaysia is not as famous as Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and of course your beautiful country Indonesia, your tourism marketing ia top notch (which makes me question wth has our tourism ministry has been doing 😑) But still i think its okay because in the end my country may become a hidden gem to the tourist who come to love my country after their visits, sometimes being not so popular (or underrated) has its advantage 😊 I'm sure many tourist has fall in love with your country, your nature is sooooo beautiful, u have paradise-like landscape oh myyy, u guys are so lucky..
