How To Make Nasi Lemak - The National Dish of Malaysia

- Chef Kyo Pang of the NYC restaurant Kopitiam makes the beloved national dish of Malaysia: nasi lemak. A product of multiple ethnic cuisines within Malaysia, nasi lemak starts with a paste of shallots, garlic, dried anchovies. Next, Chef Kyo blends dried and fresh chilis, shrimp paste, tamarind paste, mixes everything together, and fries it all in oil. Then, Chef Kyo makes coconut rice with jasmine rice, pandan leaves, and coconut milk. Finally, she completes the dish with fried peanuts, fried anchovies, 7-minute eggs, homemade sambal paste, and cucumber slices. Check out the recipe here: www.vice.com/en_us/article/ev...

Was in Malaysia this summer.
Have to say that Malay cuisine is absolutely phenomenal on multiple levels.
Only ended up having Nasi Lemak before my flight out of Malaysia. Still craving it to this day 🥺

I agree. Having every time I leave Malaysia, I’ll have the nasi lemak on the plane just as a wrap up for my Malaysia journey.
@@adamchia4791 Malay cuisine
Glad to hear you love it
wasn't too fond of spicy food before I went to Malaysia. 7 years later, I have sambal with every second meal. Magical place with magical gastronomy.
I'll just go ahead and say the obvious...we need a Munchies Guide To Malaysia.
Yeah... We do,Malaysian food need some promotion
Malaysia is a multiracial country and Malaysian may not agree with each other about a lot of things but one thing they can agree for sure is nasi lemak. Everyone love nasi lemak in Malaysia.
Finally someone to rep Malaysia. I eat nasi lemak almost everyday for breakfast.
its not healthy to eat everyday
@@louisesia6821 if you wat rice everyday then there is no problem eating nasi lemak everyday.. the actual problem is in today’s cooking, the portion for food is just absurd.
I lived with some Malaysians in college, wonderful people, and I can honestly say some of the dishes have some strong flavors to them. I miss them now because you just don't find flavors that intense every day here. An amazing food culture in Malaysia and wonderful people.
They call police on you for cooking food that has intense flavour.
I will die without Malaysian food.. I can't face the bread and pasta all year long.. I still need the uniqueness of Malaysia to survive my year..
First time I see somebody cooking with a leather jacket on
Well, if the spice is too hot, a leather jacket makes it cooler.
Bet he’s melting in it

Bruh 😂😂😂
Ay man she cook with style
What a charming presenter this chef is! The way she wove history, her family experiences, and explanation of the ingredients and processes together was both exciting and comforting. More, please!
Eyyooo Malaysia, we love our nasi lemak like we love our mommies. Dont mess with nasi lemak!
I once ate nasi lemak for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Only realize it after I finish my dinner
Are you Malaysian and can you confirm the recipe?? Haha
@@lenska_7507 there are a lot of variation of how to cook nasi lemak. This is the first time I see people pour coconut milk after the rice is already cooked. Usually we just cook the rice with coconut milk. Northern malay peninsular style put some spices like black pepper, cloves etc in the rice so it is more aromatic.
@@mohdzammilabubakar4479 thanks for your answer! I lived one year in Penang and I’m craving nasi lemak so much haha just wanted to make sure if I can use that recipe to get the real taste 🤤🤤
i lived in malaysia for 5years for studies. First 2/3years, whenever i saw Nasi lemak ( usually comes in a banana leaf packet ) i used to have a feeling that i would throwup .. finally, one day i tried it out of hunger, very early in the morning. since then until i left i could never eat enough of it. I used to buy anything that says nasi lemak, even from Mcd , restaurants burgers, nasi lemak ayam ( chicken ) .. nasi lemak sotong ( squid ).. most delicious food ever, if i have to eat one dish , i could eat it and never get bored.. right now, came to watch this video, nd trying to have courage to make this dish..
Love the variety of dishes on Munchies and getting to meet these chefs from all around the world! This Nasi Lemak had so much history behind it, best part
#MalaysiaTrulyAsia
You’re so pretty 🤎
Thank you so much chef Kyo Pang for representing Malaysians and Malaysian cuisine. We appreciate your effort.
Kyo I'm in love with your wisdom - importance of hands... and your grandmother comparing food to people.. I'm living for this.
I have lived in Kuala Lumpur for the past 2 years. It’s an amazing dish and I prefer it for breakfast. Malay food is amazing.
Hopefully you tried the nasi lemak at Village Park restaurant!
Parnit S do they have a vegetarian version?
@@jusbeazy28 yeah their sambal is vegetarian so you can order the vege version with the rice, sambal, the peanuts... their's is the best nasi lemak i've ever had, half the reason being their sambal and half their fried chicken haha
Parnit S I’ll have to go try it - where is the restaurant located? I’m close to Desa Parkcity
@@jusbeazy28 i'm not sure where desa parkcity is (i'm not a malaysian myself) but this place is in Damansara uptown
I'm a westerner living in Indonesia, I never did like anchovies before I started working here but fried ikan asin ("salted fish", Indonesian is basically a dialect of Malay) in fried rice is amazing. It's like a little ocean flavor bomb
Sean Wilson kontol
Sorry for the salty indonesian there pissed about you calling Indo a dialect of Malay.
From what I can tell the difference is almost analogous to British vs American English
@@seanwilson1922 Arguably Indonesian had a very different grammatical structure and a much richer vocab just because Indonesia has 700+ different languages. The comparison would be closer to cantonese vs mandarin than american vs british....
@@herodionhartono8790 bruh Indonesian is Malay but ya'll just nationalised it and make it your own language
grinding the ikan billis into the rempah before you tumis is pure genius
I believe its the traditional way. It makes the sambal so much fragrant and no soggy ikan bilis.
@@CatsInTheFridge It's more or less how we make it. Grind the anchovies and fry with blended chillies, onions and garlic a little of belacan and bruised lemon grass and asam jawa or asam keping. Salt and sugar
Nasi Lemak, on Munchies?! Super proud.
Welp looks like i'm leaving this one to the experts.
Lmao fr gonna fuck up all my plans tryina make this recipe....and my kitchen
Love the Peranakan take on Nasi Lemak so much! Will try to follow this recipe for fun, instead of the usual Malay recipe that I grew up with.
Looks great
Wish i had access to _80% of these ingredients_
you can actually get access to most if not all of these things if you have a good Asian market around
Kobayashi's Ego i think generally "cili padi" is kinda hard to find internationally. And thats the only one that is hard to come by fresh. But the others are easy to get in any store.
because we have asian market right around the corner.
@@riszmanraimy665 ye
@@riszmanraimy665 bird's eye chili, it's called. other spicy mexican varieties also may work i guess?
Yes!!!! Honestly, I’ve made it and it’s not that hard. As a Malaysian I’m so proud to see it on Munchies 😄😄😄
I personally eat it in Malaysia before and now back in the states my mother in law makes it all the time cause I did married a Malaysian. She’s the best thing that ever happened to me and the wonderful tastie Malaysian food has been a plus!! FYI that’s exactly how we make it at home ☺️
I had this in Kopitiam in NYC last month and I haven’t stopped craving it since!!

ORDER FROM KOPITIAM! The Malaysian white coffee (iced or hot) is amazing and yes, her nasi lemak is delicious. The shop is teeny tiny but I always look forward to it when I’m in NYC Chinatown ❤️
I love Chef Kyo's energy. She is so awesome and cool too. I love how she incorporates her family history into her delicious Nasi Lemak!
It's one of my most favourite dishes out of the many of all time.
I still miss my Malaysia days.
We need munchies food guide to Southeast Asian food. Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand etc. Those country has amazing food
I would actually love to TRY this. It makes my mouth water
🤤 just tried this! Mine didn't look as nice but it was damn tasty!
More Malaysian food please! Bring Chef Kyo back for another dish! 😄
U didnt put the coconut milk at the beginning before cook the rice? Why is that?
William Gozali yeah, it should have been cook with coconut milk (santan). it’s the proper way. maybe she didn’t have access to it. btw, love your cooking content as well.
@@azehanazli2527he is the winner of master chef indonesia 😂

Azehan Azli there plenty of coconut milk in New York and Eastern US 🤨
Looks awesome! I need to visit Malaysia!
I had Nasi Lemak almost everyday when I went to Malaysia last month. Amazing food that and roti cenai also nasi goreng i believe.
Now I want to eat nasi lemak with ayam goreng and nasi kandar. I'll visit Malaysia just to eat these foods again.
YESHHH Btw I'm still mad for Netflix not putting us in the show.
agreed.. how could they! maybe they think Singapore episode is enough... :(
I agree! I didn't watch the whole Asian one because I decided to "boycott" it out of my frustration hahaha
I fell in love with this dish when I first visited Malaysia with the family for a wedding. It’s something I cherish as much as pizza.
Can't live without nasi lemak. Thanks for the recipe.

Awesome meal
I grow up eat this every morning break at school . Good for body and wallet, love this cuisine can't get enough of it. It's Really humble food
Also get to tidur as well in class. Very nice breakfast. Literally Nasi "lemak".
First and only time I had this was at the Changi airport in Singapore. It was so good.
Thank you! Looks delicious!
I am proud of you, you should be the next malaysia food ambassador
You are so bubbly! All the best in everything you do Chef! ❤️
Cook rice in coconut milk . Nasi lemak the proper way
I also realized she didnt put coconut milk in the dish, which defeats the purpose lol
I guess I’d try it.
But just like she said, the smells of cooking it I couldn’t handle.
Trust me its da bomb but the most important part of the nasi lemak is all about the rice and the sambal (75% rice) ( 25%sambal) a good nasi lemak must have a very fragrant and mellow smell and taste to it, what it smells like is what it should taste like ( and must not be too herby or less herby and will be perfect) and the rice must be just a tad bit softer than al dente in texture and its must be in separated bits and must not be clumpy nor too soggy or sticky or even too soft and squishy the sambal must have a balance of sweetness, spiciness, umamimess and saltiness but the sambal MUST not be too sweet or else it will not be a *real sambal*
Now I'm craving nasi lemak with otah and chicken wing
I love Nasi Lemak wrapped in banana leaves. 😋
Never had this before but I wanna try now !
Love this recipe!!
Used to have it everyday when i was in malaysia ...missing alot.
I love her personality
They're so cool!
A nice presentation of the finished dish. I eat nasi lemak a lot in Singapore and don't see this style of presentation so much.
Malaysian man proud here 😁
Malaysian food is the best. Bring more Malaysian food into the channel!
I love this dish so much,we ate this on a big banana leaf, same as this except the rice had curry in the middle like a surprise! Love love the anchovies
I had this at Kopitiam in New York. It was excellent.
Looks delicious
Yum love nasi lemak!
Love love love. You are great. Make it looks easy.
Need to go to this restaurant
i like the way she explain it
I’m surprised there’s no singaporean or Indonesian that came here to say we made it
I KNOW RIGHT!
give it time. they'll come for sure.
Chauvis!
singaporeans don’t care
Don't dare. It's gonna be viral.
nasi lemak is the ABSOLUTE best

Learnt something new about anchovies!
Nice dish I’ll gonna make
I could eat nasi lemak everyday if I can. Damn good dish
I want some!
Thanks !!!!
I'll try 😍😍
Yummy!!!
I am so intimidated to cook, make and, eat anchovies but this dish looks so delicious.. ❤
Sedapnye ‼️
Add fenugreek to avoid your nasi lemak getting stale
Awesome video.. brilliant. One tip, just heat the banana leaf in some fire. Will give an awesome flavour.
Though there is such a thing as sambal Ikan bilis (sambal with fried dried anchovies - what was made here), nasi lemak features the sambal and the anchovies as separate elements within the dish, not cooked together. Also for those who don't know nasi lemak, you need to have the smelly fermented shrimp paste and the tamarind in the chilli, without which you are not making the correct chilli for nasi lemak.
I think Munchies should more explore about southeast asia culinary dish.
That dish looked spicy AF. I want it
represent!
From living in Malaysia I’d have thought it was Bloody Chicken and rice or some AmPang Curry :3 despite how gross that sounds it’s actually soooooo good!
Malaysian!!!!! Shout out here!!
Omg so much steps
Food does bring everyone together. Now all we need is some GG4 and GSC buds to make it a celebration. 😂
Nasi Lemak..... food of the Gods...
I am Malay Singaporean. But i strongly agree this comes from Malaysia. Okay don't fight fight about food, be happy share food UwU
