I have owned one of these wonderful cars for just two weeks as a daily driver. It succeeded a 118i Sport, which was surprisingly brisk for a mere 1500 cc but not quite oomphy enough. Mine has just the three extras I consider essential: auto gearbox, adaptive suspension and reversing camera. Mine is a Shadow Edition so already has HK sound, which is a huge improvement on the tinny standard issue. I started driving when cars still had starting handles and trafficators - obsolete devices to which I would now add manual transmission. I test drove cars with and without adaptive suspension and, in deference to the fillings in my teeth, I chose adaptive. The rear camera lets you park closer to other cars without hitting them. As a daily driver the car is amazingly docile - it is not red in tooth and claw at all until you press the loud pedal a bit harder, when it is unleashed. Its staggering acceleration gives you an extra margin of safety when overtaking or joining motorways, for example. Eco Pro mode is suitable for driving on camera-infested motorways but not around town, when its hesitancy is a real menace. The fact that BMW are going to drop the F20 and replace it with 4-pot, transverse-engined MINI on steroids shows that they are no longer interested in producing “the ultimate driving machine”. Cast aside doubts and get one while you still have the chance - “they will not pass this way again”.
I would 100% be in a m140 but my insurance where I live is astronomical. As a young male mid twenties working in tech living in a rough part of London I must be flagged as an absolute mug. I'll just stick with the 116i for now :/
Great video. I bought mine when I was doing 10 miles a day to and from work. New job means I’m doing 120-180 a day three to four days a week. Had over 40mpg on numerous occasions without driving particularly carefully.
Keith Johnston yeah that’s a big change in commute! Similar thing happened for me went from like 8/9 miles to about 40 a day. That’s why the cars now on 20k. Amazing the economy you can extract out of the engine thoug!
Keith Johnston what is your real world average mileage range to a tank? I know you don’t buy this for economy but I’m trying to be realistic as I do over 500 miles per week?
I was worried when I got mine as I’m in constant stop start traffic to work and back (10 mile each way) and I’m returning between 24 and 27 mpg which I’m very happy about, I thought it would be a hell of a lot worse, my mates golf R does less in traffic. Did a journey at the weekend from didsbury to the ribble valley and I averaged 36mpg at 75 to 80. Pro nav was a must for me, I drive 6 is fantastic, adaptive suspension is a must too because our British roads are terrible! Speed limit display also a handy tool for this car.
Yeah you really can't complain at that considering its all stop start! My 335i was horrendous in stop start traffic so it shows how far the engine tech has come on. Yeah I wish I had idrive 6 but to be honest 5 is good enough. Still haven't driven one with adaptive but everyone says its a must - but when ordering no one could give me a solid answer on if it was worth it
Had the m235i for three years and recently traded in for an m240i. As the guy says it could be the last of its kind. Stunning car but i wish stop start was of by default. Who buys a 350 bhp motor for stop start...
When my starter motor failed in the middle of a 3 lane road i had to pay for recovery, a new starter and labour. Costing several hundreds of pounds. There's no way on earth that stop start has resulted in me saving several hundreds of pounds worth of fuel. Utterly stupid tech I think.
Had mine for just over 2 weeks now, and my journey to work is pretty heavy traffic. I've been getting between 14 and 20mpg on a typical commute which is actually a little painful!
Thanks for another informative and interesting video. I have finally decided to go for the 140i, with the 5 door, to keep the wife happy. I have a countdown timer on my phone for when the day comes for me to place my order, sad I know, 137 days to go, sound better than 4 1/2 months. Take care.
I completely completely agree with you about stop start!! You need to inject fuel every time, you wear out the starter motor and the oil keeps draining into the sump, completely ruins the car and I've had it coded out. Get a bloody Prius if you are that bothered! And as far as the seats are concerned they are the best and most comfortable seats I've ever sat in.
Jan Van Houtte yeah I agree, I managed to drive a manual and the only let down is the box. But for the added engagement it was amazing. I’d have a manual but I also get the merits of the auto having owned it. Agree about the next model sadly
Spot on about the stop/start mate, the function is literally a scam, if engines and components last to long, these companies dont make aftermarket sales.
Excellent. I’m getting average 32mpg in my Polo Gti around town - I get my m140i on lease in 2 weeks... I’ll be happy with 30mpg average, if possible. 👌😊😁😃
Richard Massey what is your real world average mileage range to a tank? I know you don’t buy this for economy but I’m trying to be realistic as I do over 500 miles per week?
hi ive had mine about 2months now getting about 20,8 mpg but im only around town and the missis only goes up the road and back to work ,full tank will just do 210 miles
I get 22 mpg in mine. I've never seen better. Roughly 7 mile drive to work, so not really getting warm. Small section of motorway driving. But for the mileage I do, it doesn't bother me at all. I do drive it hard, so probably some driving style differences.
I’m looking to buy one mate and also have a commute of around 7 miles to work with a small motorway section. How many miles do you get from a full tank???
@@sammysmither1986 Between 250 - 300 mile depending on how hard I push it? 22mpg is taking it easy on the commute in comfort mode. If I'm driving like miss daisy in eco I could in theory get 30mpg but that's really trying.
ST Supercars unfortunately that’s in eco, can’t stand it, but going into lpool it can be stopping and starting. I do turn off the stop / start, I agree it can be dangerous at certain times.
paul beesley oh really, fair enough. I’ve not actually tried eco on my commute. I also work in Liverpool just well further away so by the time I get there it’s not too bad for traffic
Had mine a month and my commute to work is 10 miles in stop start traffic and i can't get over 22.5mpg. Am i doing something wrong? I've tried comfort mode and eco and eco only saves me about 0.6 miles every commute.
Great vid and the mpg you’re getting is v good, and around about what they quote. I’ve had nothing like it since picking my one up last month. Averaged 14.1 in stop/start traffic this week in London, which seems mental low, especially compared to what others are posting here
Rupert Deering oh wow! 14.1 is low. Is it literally stop start the whole way? I think any engine would struggle in that heavy traffic but 14.1 seems really low
I have a 240i same oppinion in eco-pro and stop-start, Im getting 28 mpg in mixed conditions, although seems that you car does not have the adaptative suspension...it makes some difference in comfort setting for sure.
I'm debating between this and a 125d, my daily commute is around 40 ish miles either way. So yes im thinking about economy and of course insurance as I am only 20. What fuel do you use? Currently driving a corsa 1.4 so big upgrade!
Great to finally see a video pop up. Pleased to see you are still driving the same car and and enjoying it. I’m still happy with the focus RS. However I do agree start stop is not really good for performance cars. Are you going to pop the performance exhaust on the car going forward?
Dumi Mudi cheers mate! I actually really like e92. My mate runs a 325d (same engine but de-tuned) and he’s had no problems plus with a remap they end up the same as a remapped 330d. Great for daily but expect to see about 35mpg
Dumi Mudi I've ran my e92 330d for 3 years now. Mapped to 280bhp ish and 600nm. On a long run i can get 45mpg, with a mix and a bit of right foot about 38. Never seen less than 35 over a tanks worth tho
How much worse is the Harman Kardon compared with the f30? I love my hK but thinking of switching from my 335xd. I am a massive music lover and the sound is very important
I've run an M135i auto for over 2 years now and I don't think I've ever seen over 30mpg. 25mpg is about right for a mix of town and dual carriageway driving. I suspect anything over 30mpg and you're doing a fair bit of motorway driving.
Michael White depends how you drive it but around 300 driven sensibly is possible but round town or if you have a heavy right foot expect much less. Tank is only 52L which defo isn’t big enough!

I have a 240 as a daily driver and I agree with pretty much everything you said, stop start, waste of time, causes unnecessary friction and wear on engine. Eco pro, not appropriate for this type of car, go buy a Prius if you really care that much, to be fair they have to put those options on the cars just to comply so let's not all get het up thinking we are bad people because we don't use them, we bought these cars to enjoy driving them and until it becomes illegal (which it probably will) I'm not apologising for driving everywhere in sport or sport+. The only negative I've found with mine and I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had the same issue, it really holds onto 1st 2nd and a bit 3rd in sports+, so much so that I have to step in and change up manually before it screams out in pain.
Yeah completely agree mate, I didn't buy the car to be an eco warrior and tbh I find in most situations its better being in control of the car manually anyway. Have you got the box pushed over to the sport setting when you refer to sport+. I generally find that even in sport and sport+ with the box in standard more it changes up pretty early considering, unless you floor it and then it will hold on to the gear
ST Supercars No even with the box left in normal but the setting in Sport+ it literally screams it's tits off until I have to change up for it, it think it's goes to about 3,000 revs in 1st and second before it changes by it's self

Sunset Orange and Oyster Leather. Also got the jet black alloys on it instead of the grey

Kai Bowman yep exactly! Great way of getting people to destroy internal components that they can conveniently pay them to swap
Bad form mate, but business has always been this way. I've had mine disabled the OBD :-).
Won’t keep over 3 years anyway so it’s only Bmw that lose out if components affected.
Paul Wood it’s just not worth it mate, like lease I only 3 years for that reason alone.
I pay enough pm, never mind maintenance on top.

Just under 35mpg over 4k miles for me. There alot of motorway driving in that.👍
