Ok, this is a weird thing to think but hear me out: that story where the person mentioned how MLMs spread the most in elementary schools because of the face to face with teachers... I'd be curious to track the spread of MLMs the way we track the spread of diseases. I'm a mathematician and worked in epidemiology during peak COVID, and these models are so interesting. I'd LOVE to have enough data to track MLMs through social circles the same way (can use anti-MLM content as vaccination in this scenario, where it makes individuals less susceptible). You know what.... I'm gonna see if there's any data on this....

Something similar to what happened in story 3 happened where I went to college. An MLM hun managed to hack the college's email server to send her pitch to every single student, professor, and staff member at the college. If anyone tried to reply to the original email the reply got CC'd to every single email account on the server. Every single person who had a college email account got thousands of emails and important emails from professors got buried among of meme and cat pictures emails students were sending through the mass email chain. In the end the student responsible was expelled and the college's email servers were so damaged they needed to be outright replaced and the college's emails services were down for two weeks.

This long game of faux friendship is so destructive. When you are in a low place, you need nothing more than the genuine concern of those who love you. I can’t imagine the pain these people felt when their “friend” revealed their true motive. As someone diagnosed with avoidant personality disorder, this approach would literally damage me psychologically and set me back in treatment. Thank you for bringing this issue to light, Hannah! I was previously in Plexus as an ambassador... I have so many thoughts and opinions on this whole situation... Let alone the products....... Uhh They need to be extremely cautious with who they get on these products. The ingredients that are for example.. in the "pink drink".. I had someone under me who experienced feeling dizzy, loopy and just sick.. Come to find out. She takes blood pressure medication in the morning. AND taking the "pink drink" resulted in interfering with her medications. So I found out that its best to "take the pink drink 3-4 hours after taking any medications"... I then informed her to do so.. Which it did help. But it just shows how much nobody in Plexus has ANY IDEA on the ingredients that are in the products and how they can effect these people.. THEN the actual PRESCRIBED medications from an actual DOCTOR.. Its not safe and so disgusting to just target "sick" people...

The part that annoys me with plexus is the whole “detox” conversations. I remember when someone I knew was trying to have me try plexus, they kept asking me if I had any bloating to then try the triplex system.
I was so annoyed with her messaging me that I thought “it won’t hurt to try it”
Yet I had the worse stomach pains when I started using the products and what I was told is I was detoxing and to take more of the supplements and that I would feel better . I’m ashamed that I fell for this stuff and that I tried it for 3 months because they said that’s how long it takes to see changes. It was a waste of time and money. I feel so scammed.
And now the person that sells plexus, doesn’t contact me at all.

I was in an essential oil group and someone posted - and I forget the setup to how they knew the person, but someone they knew, had a history of miscarriages, and she wished she could introduce the friend to oils, because those miscarriages were being caused by Bath and Body Works lotions and scented candles, she just KNEW it. I responded that that was an irresponsible bordering on dangerous thing to say, and that that was an absolutely vile amount of victim blaming. Perhaps unsurprisingly, that’s when people in the group quit speaking to me. 😳

So for the student email things, for students at a college in the US, look into your schools FERPA rules. Most schools cant hand out specific identifying info but can give your email out to certain groups (like the military or "job" groups) that "do something" for the school. You can usually opt out of this info and some other stuff being shared and cut out these stupid emails. FERPA cant stop an individual student from digging around and spamming people but I found out about it because my school was letting Cutco and MP groups send out emails constantly.

I'd looooove to have one of these people reach out to me. Actually, them, Monat, or any skincare mlm. I have asthma that's triggered by perfumes/colognes, bleach (or any cleaning agent that has a strong scent to it), super cold air, and paraffin candles (especially scented). I've also got sensitive skin (can't shave more than once a week without irritation, my armpits break out in a weeping rash if I use some deodorants regularly, I've broken out in hives from certain laundry detergents, and my scalp flakes quite a bit if I use anything with fragrance in it) combined with perioral dermatitis that I finally got rid of mostly (it's a rash around the mouth that is a royal pain to get rid of) and due to both these factors I have to use very specific hygiene products. No fragrances, no dyes, no sulfates, no fluoride in anything that comes into contact with my face on a regular basis; so I avoid it all in all soaps and other products I use.
I'd love to see a hun try to convince me that my doctor is wrong or that their "natural" product won't cause flare ups of these conditions. I would just laugh them out of my DMs faster than they could say "it's not a pyramid scheme".

Just checked the IT policy at the university I worked at - this is a pretty standard policy at almost any school, and they make it clear numerous times that what she did is not allowed:
"Incidental Use to conduct or promote the User’s outside employment, including self-employment, is prohibited."
and this: "Users may not be paid, or otherwise profit, from the use of any university-provided information resource or from any output produced using it. Users may not promote any commercial activity using university information resources. Examples include, attempting to sell football tickets or used text books via the [university's] course management service or advertising a "Make Money Fast" scheme via a newsgroup. I didn't look up my uni's policy on email list servers but I know that the ones I've sent emails through (as a student, representing a student group from my own uni email) are accessible in the sense that it's no secret what they're called, and therefore I suppose anyone can send anything through them, but in that case I'd assume there'd be filters to catch spam and whatnot, and I'm pretty sure the final email has to be approved by the owners/moderators of the list. I had an email regarding a student group event get rejected. I'm not sure why it was rejected, but I remember emailing my department office and they let me send it through. I'm sure we have policies much like yours as well, and the lists I've emailed through were specific to my department, they certainly weren't university wide ones!

He then demanded I send back the 2 unused samples and blocked me from FB, LoL. 😆 a short time later I was told about it being an MLM. 🙄

Not MLM but still shady - I’ve been handed a flyer for some business and witnessed a man going around harassing people about changing their phone plan to TMobile while shopping at one of my local Targets. I didnt know why “sales people” think this Target in particular was apparently a great place to pitch until I tried to report the harassment & the Target employee just said “yeah that happens” and walked off.

My coworker is on Optavia specifically because she wants to be thin. She does look thin now and I know she loves it, but it makes me so sad to think about that she's basically starving herself for it. I watch her combine water and some sort of powder to make "chili" or "chowder" for lunch every day! Even the snacks in her office (granola bars) are Optivia. I'd be curious and probably full of pity to see what happens if she ever decides to come off it.

she will likely gain the wait back and some. there is some research out there comparing the diet to balanced diets with weight loss and research shows optavia does allow for fast weight loss, where as diet and exercise is very slow. but those who went off optavia gained everything back and some. I think it was almost everyone on optavia had this result. as opposed to those with diet and exercise only about half gained back almost all the weight (not all the weight. but most of the weight)
I also have a friend doing optavia. it breaks my heart because she was already a thin built woman and absolutely beautiful. now she just looks like a skeleton. and is working out on the plan. so...it's heart breaking to watch. she just posted her kids prom pictures and I'm like hopefully you figure this out soon because you may not live to see their weddings. 🤷🏼‍♀️
I don't think it's an eating disorder but I do think it's drinking the "this is healthy" and she has family doing it. again it really sucks to watch.

So many of these stories highlight just how difficult it can be to form friendships as an adult (especially during the pandemic). The person who moved to a new town and does not know anyone. The person whose friend group has changed or drifted apart over time. The person who is looking for support with something difficult in their lives. At the heart of this is the very human need to belong. MLMs are set up to prey on this desire and love bomb people, making them think they are gaining friends, when in reality they are being viewed as a giant dollar sign and are seen as replaceable when they're no longer profitable. I assume this is also why people join these opportunities... wanting to find a community to belong to, not realizing how deep they are getting into it. It can be lonely out there and finding people to connect with can be so hard. Finding friendships that go beyond the superficial level is even harder. My heart goes out to the person in the story with the MLM rep who commented about her purse (Ally). I really felt for her. I know where she is coming from. It must have felt so disappointing once she realized that person was not actually interested in anything other than pitching her "business" opportunity. I hope she is now surrounded by friendship, support and love.
Hannah, I have to say that you are such a calming presence. You really seem like a genuine, caring person and I can appreciate the emotional intelligence and care you bring to your videos. You are one of the bright spots in my day. Love and light!

The upline’s income is so directly related to their downline’s performance that they really push their downline to do things they wouldn’t normally do. The downline views the upline as a kind of authority figure and ends up doing things they wouldn’t normally do.

I have done some MLM stuff, but wasn’t ever super successful because I hated the sales pitch part. I only actively sold for one MLM, didn’t make a lot of money but I did enjoy the community. I have an interesting theory about how teachers can get sucked into MLMs easier than those in other professions. The teaching profession normalizes spending your own money to do your job (sometimes a lot of it!) as well as working a ridiculous amount of hours that you don’t get compensated for. When they encounter this situation in an MLM, the red flags might not wave because, sadly, they are used to this situation.

And I get that it is satisfying watching those, there where a few going round where they make a lot of income claims. Like "and like thiis you can make 300$ per job" or something along the line. I just thought maybe those TikToks went into the same direction, you come for satisfaction and in leads into a sales funnel for online courses about how to setup your pressure cleaning service or something.

6:16 No, it's not for "hopefully they'll come and see your profile" It's because the Facebook algorithm promotes people who have posted often on your page on the feed of updates. Most people go to their feed when they go to Facebook, and if you have been active on their page, your post will be pushed forward on their feed, which means that it's more likely that they see them, whether they actively visit your page or not. That's why it's beneficial to them to comment on every post you make, even if it's just a couple of words, or a smiley.

Hi Hannah, I make this comment about the last from your 'comment section'. I cannot fathom why people find anything wrong with your accent, oh that's right there are too many who are so uneducated that they don't know there are many accents even within one country and people who are so untraveled haven't a clue. I live in NZ also living in Australia for a time, so very different in accents. I live in the southern area of NZ and we roll our r's I can guarantee you that we have a very thick skin because this is who we are. I note that some news readers voices are hard to listen to as they grate on the nerves, YOURS DOES NOT. I would say but not to be negative, my husband who is deaf finds it very hard to understand what people are saying when they talk fast, its like a word or two are 'missed' and that is frustrating as what someone say is hard to understand, However, he does seem to get the drift of what you are talking about, so no biggy, oh and masks are not very helpful too. I haven't tried to slow you down (hehe) but I must do it just to see if it is better for him. Keep doing what you do and of course you don't need anyone's permission as to how you wear your beautiful hair or if you wear make up. I personally listen to your content and people have way too much time on their hands if they have to criticize you on your appearance. If they have nothing good to say, say nothing.
